This is my first time coming in, and I had a great experience! I came to the salon as I've come to Emily before, and had a great experience with her. I do a glass with some toning, and a trim and style. I love how my hair looks afterwards!! Emily does a great job with the gloss -- making it shiny, and the right amount of purple toned. The haircut is my favorite part, since I haven't found anyone else able to cut mine in a way that I like! She does a great job of not taking off too much length, but getting the split ends, and giving me the blunt style I'm looking for while maintaining some layers. I definitely plan to come back again! I also appreciate that this salon uses Aveda products which I've heard great things about, and had a great (limited) experience with so far. The salon itself is clean, and has a great aesthetic. I want to love Dark Horse so much but the quality of work is very hit or miss. Some of the middle to senior hair stylists are great but I've had lackluster experiences with every other service here. Just walked out of my $80 pedicure with polish that you can basically see my nail though (asked for three coats and they only did two) and the polish doesn't even cover my whole nail. There are bare parts of my nail but somehow also polish on the skin around my nail. The manicuring was off. Still parts of skin and cuticle around the nail. The worst part is that they don't use a bag in the basin or new nail tools for each customer which makes me not want to go back just for fear of getting an infection. Doesn't seem like they care at all about cleanliness when it comes to nail practices. Definitely looking elsewhere for pedicures in the future. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by this salon, before coming in, I looked at previous yelp reviews and scared myself. Jenna was my stylist, she went above and beyond with my haircut. I came in with quite a few pictures of what I want. And explained my concerns about past salon experience's. I really like the care and attention to detail shown. She first cut my hair dry, then washed it, cut it wet, dried it, and then cut it a final time. And made sure to check that the layers would lay beautifully when part from any side.. I asked for a layered cut with curtain bangs, but unfortunately, the result was very different from what I expected. More length was taken off than I was comfortable with, and instead of curtain bangs, I was given side-swept bangs. The layers feel very choppy and uneven--some strands stick out awkwardly no matter how much I try to style or straighten them, making my hair look messy and unpolished. I didn't ask for internal layers, but it feels like that's what I got, and it's made my hair fall in a way that I really don't like. Please save your time and money. I went in for a consultation to go from the deep chestnut box dye (see picture) back to my natural root color and blonde balayage. Spent 5hrs in the seat and said at the time of my coloring that I didn't like all the red that was still in my hair and wanted my natural root blended down. Called back because I could still see the red box dye and my ends were strawberry blonde (not what I asked for see picture of what I received). After sending in multiple pictures and explaining my issue with multiple people including the owner I went into get the color correction and was then gaslit and further questioned. I was told that they didn't understand my hair goals and was basically told they couldn't help me. They still have yet to explain why my roots look so horrible. They've wasted my time and treated me like a delusional person. All I wanted was the $400 service I paid for. See attached picture of roots that they looked at in the salon for the color correction and told me they were blended. Not only did they say my roots are blended, they said that I did get what I asked for and that putting me with a "new talent" was a bad move and some how my fault. I've been very polite and just wanted a fair resolution but have now wasted too much and $400 just to be absolutely humiliated. Apparently because I said I don't mind warm tones in my balayage I'm at fault. For starters I cannot say enough good things about this salon. For me, when moving to omaha, I wanted a salon that had good quality products (aveda) in addition to great service. From the start, dark horse met all my expectations. The environment of the salon is comfortable and welcoming in addition to the staff being so friendly. When spending a good deal of time getting your hair done (4 hours for me normally) I wanted to be in an environment that felt relaxing and not too overwhelming- this salon does it. I always look forward to my appointment with Courtney. Not only is she great company but she's an amazing hair stylist. From start to finish, my experience at Dark Horse was wonderful. They have a very convenient scheduling system where you can text back and forth to arrange your appointment. And you get helpful reminder texts as well. As soon as I walked in the door, a lovely receptionist greeted me, checked me in, and offered me a beverage from a wide selection including tea, coffee, and sparkling waters. NOT for curly hair After having them reschedule my appointment 3-4 separate times, I managed to get a secure appointment slot. I confirmed three separate times that I would be getting a dry curly cut in order to have the cut match my natural curl texture. I even confirmed this when they confirmed my appointment- that I would arrive with my curls freshly washed so the cut could be structured around that. They seem to have said yes without knowing what that meant. A quarter of the way through my cut, I look up from my phone to see that she had completely brushed my hair and was trimming the ends as you would with straight hair. I was in shock, and she has already started cutting so I froze, which is admittedly my mistake. I have had health issues, it has taken me years to get this length and thickness of hair back. I just washed it for the first time since my cut and it looks terrible, much more length gone that anticipated because I don't think she calculated for shrinkage when curls dry. My curls are a boxy frizzy mess, worst cut I have gotten in years. She was very nice, this could be an excellent salon for straight hair but I would never go here for curls regardless of the stylist, after having them confirm three separate times what a dry curly cut was and have this be the result. read more

Very nice salon in Dundee. Formerly Matt Wayne, they redid the space and it looks great. I hope you like horse motifs because there are horsies all over the place at Dark Horse. Being able to grab a complimentary coffee and sit on a comfy seat while you wait for your hairdresser is a nice touch, as is the relaxing aroma therapy they employ during hair washing. Staff were all fantastic. Erin gave me my haircut (used to go to her at Halo down the street) and have absolutely no complaints. I look a lot less like a dork every time she cuts my hair, so it's much appreciated, especially because that's no easy feat. Dark Horse is my new spot for haircutting from now on. read more

Pete is a godsend! I have very stereotypical thick, dark, Latina hair. I've been to many hairdressers throughout my life and none of them have really known how to deal with ALL MY HAIR! The first time I saw Pete we just did a trim, but even so, my hair maintained its shape for many months afterward. It says a lot about a hair dresser when a simple trim can withstand the test of time and still look good! I let my hair grow out (down to my waist) and it just became too long for me to want to deal with (also my 15 month old son loves to pull on it!). Pete cut it exactly how I wanted it, while also tweeking it to suit my hair texture. Can't thank him enough for getting my hair SO right! Also conversation is always great! We've always got loads to talk about. He's so easy to be yourself around. The new location is clean and spacious. They're all decorated for Christmas now so the whole salon is very festive. Loved my first visit so much! I had to go back for another one :) My friend referred me to Cameron at Dark Horse Salon and Spa for a deep conditioning treatment. I normally dislike salon experiences because of forced, awkward conversation. Or awkward dead silence. Seeing Cameron was the exact opposite! She was friendly, funny and related to my twisted sense of humor. She was personable and made me feel extremely comfortable, we talked about family, life experiences and day to day BS. Aside from her kick ass personality, she is a talented professional. I've never had a scalp massage quite like the one I got from her, my hair follicles were tingling for the rest of the day :) I went there on my day off, feeling grungy and not planning anything for my Friday night. After everything was said and done, I put on mascara and some black boots for a ladies night downtown. She gave me an awesome deal on Aveda smooth infusion creme, provided the service I needed and made me want to come back for more. The atmosphere was great, loved the layout of the salon. I had originally come in as a new client a few months ago and had seen Lanie. I was told recently that Lanie left and moved back home, and to call to reschedule with someone. When I saw Lanie, I had a new client coupon for $20 off a first client service, and my total came to about $24 for service. I realize there are different levels of stylists but the highest level stylist price I see online is $50. I did not think to ask what level Paula was, as I assumed the price would just be similar since I was not told otherwise. Paula did a great job with my haircut and was very friendly, so I am not saying anything regarding the quality and her service. However, in regards to the rest of the experience--I was told to wear a mask inside and told to call ahead before coming in. I understand these precautions are taken at all salons currently during this time, but the receptionist told me to wait outside and someone would come escort me in, and that never happened. So I went in myself, but I had been waiting a few minutes in the car because of that request, and it felt really awkward. Also, having a mask on the whole time during a service was uncomfortable, though I understand the reasoning behind it, if it is my choice to not wear one because it makes it difficult to breathe and aggravates other health issues, I should not feel that I am being forced to wear one while paying for a salon service that is supposed to be enjoyable. When I was checking out to pay, my bill was $62 which was almost $20 higher than I expected to pay based on the last visit. If Paula's fee is higher, I should have been informed during the booking process or prior to starting services. I also saw on a client survey box that there was an extra "cleaning fee" of $3 per 15 min that I also was not informed or made aware of. Again, should have been informed of this prior, if this is something being done now due to the current situation. Had I known all this, I might not have come in. I love Aveda salons and this one is very close to my home, and Paula was very nice, so I really wanted to be a long term customer. But I am the parent of a profoundly disabled child and it is hard to justify to myself a haircut of $62 plus tip. Though self care is of course, a priority. That is pretty outrageous, and I have lived in Arizona, California and Lincoln and been to high end, chic salons and never been charged that much for a basic haircut and style. I reached out with these issues to the salon prior to posting, and no one was able to try and help me address these issues or remedy the situation. read more

I came here for cut and color (balayage to be exact). My hair looks horrible. Everyone that has seen my hair can clearly tell one side of my hair is lighter than the other half. I have patches of orange mixed with yellow and dark brown. I had also asked for long layers. The gal used some razor looking thing for my layers. My layers do not look like what I normally get. I brought a photo of what I wanted done and this gal told me she could totally do it. All she did was ruin my hair. I will need to find a place to fix this $200+ disaster. Horrible experience. I am embarrassed to go out in public. The worst part is I can't hide how awful my hair looks. The yellowish patch of hair on one side stands out no matter how I style my hair. This is a really wonderful Aveda salon with a great location right near the Dundee Theater. I go to Lindsay for color and she is really wonderful and patient. I find that sometimes colorists have an 'agenda' - something new they want to try or a great vision for how your hair could look. While I appreciate that, I also love a stylist who will just listen to what you're interested in, give you a few possibilities, and plenty of time to make a decision. For my recent color shift from a dark natural brown on coarse, curly hair, I wanted to experiment with red and purple tones. Lindsay brought me in for a consultation, free of charge, spent about 20 minutes with me and some swatches, and gave me a full quote for what the cost would be, including any possible incidentals that might come up. I was so astonished - sometimes hair dressers can be really cagey about the costs of their services, and while I am completely willing to pay for quality, I get really anxious if I don't know what I am going to be shelling out. Each time I've gone in, I've spent upwards of 3 hours in Lindsay's chair and the conversation is free-flowing but not stilted, awkward, or weirdly personal like some stylists can be. And her work is great - in instances when I've been disappointed, or we underestimated what it would take to get my stubborn, highly pigmented hair to take different colors, she's redone it free of charge. She takes such pride in her work and it really shows - if you're not happy, she's not happy, and she doesn't try to convince you that it's what you asked for, etc. Otherwise, this is a lovely salon. The waiting area is comfortable, they have some lovely tea on offer, and they provide a really wonderful neck/shoulder/scalp massage and aromatherapy with every session. The decor is really nice and the stylists and receptionists work hard to keep things neat and clean. read more

I met with Pete and he was very friendly and listened very well as I tried to explain what I think wanted (star 3). He got right to it and I was/am very pleased with the result (star 4 and 5). I was a little scared for two reasons: I needed to find a new stylist for curly hair as I couldn't ever get an appointment with my current stylist. Secondly my hair was dry and turned into a giant frizzy mess on a daily basis it seemed instead of the nice natural curl I normally had. My appointment was with Jim Kracl. He explained the Groupon's benefits for my "frizzy"situation making me feel encouraged and very comfortable with what I had purchased. He did an excellent job cutting my naturally curly hair which is a skill sometimes hard to find. Overall I would suggest the salon. The people provided excellent customer service. After the first person I went to ruining my hair, with the worst cut of my life, Kyanna fixed my hair tremendously. Fixing my hair did involve having to cut off around 5 additional inches but it made it all worth while. My hair is softer than ever and I am beyond happy with my hair cut, eyebrow wax and over all experience while at dark horse with all the employees. My first visit was fine. The shampoo was thorough the style was very good. The price was a bit high for a simple shampoo and style. My second visit, the shampoo was not as thorough, the style looked as though a pile of dry straws had been piled on top of my head. I've had better styles at the beauty school, and they offer a discount to seniors. To add insult to injury, I was charged ten more dollars than my first visit. How can people do business like that?
