We were out and about in Massapequa Park, NY with our friends. We were driving in town and saw the Dark Horse Tavern on Park Blvd. We went into the tavern to find an interesting pub interior with brick, painted paneling, leather seats and TVs. The tavern was decorated for Halloween. It looked great! Our waitress, Kenzie, was super. She was so friendly, attentive, funny and very informative. I asked about an IPA and she said the Bronx IPA was the one to have. I asked if I could try one, she brought me a sample. It was excellent, so I ordered a pint. We talked and enjoyed each other's company. There was no rush, which we all appreciated. The girls said the bathrooms were spotless and very clean. We all ordered their famous French Onion Soup Hamburger with melted Swiss cheese, tomato, lettuce, and red onions topped with their special sauce (French onion soup). The hamburger was delicious cooked to perfection, and the French fries were hot and tasty. My wife loves this restaurant! She said, "This was the best hamburger I have ever had! They were really good! No kidding. We all decided on dessert, so we all had the chocolate lava cake with vanilla ice cream for dessert. It was so delicious! Wow! Great culinary experience, great food and great service and a very enjoyable time with my family and friends. If you're near Massapequa Park, the Dark Horse Tavern is a must. Very disappointed with this place. Been ordering from them for years. Today's takeout order was $62, and burgers were ordered medium, but they were well done. Also, burgers were missing the embellishments. Very overpriced for the meals and quality. Called the restaurant and was not treated kindly. Very abrupt response with no apologies, and was hung up on. Visit Date: October 28, 2023 My sister decided to come here after she had her daughter dedicated at a mega church to celebrate. The menu looked so good but the food was a disappointment. I wasn't sure what to order. First I got fries for my son that he wouldn't touch so other people ate them. Than I asked for pretzel bites for my son which he didn't touch either so I ate some and my sister's husband's friend across the table ate some too. I got the stuffed brie pretzel bites. Not enough brie cheese and the fig jam dip was too watery for my liking. I had the empanadas as well and they were a little bit on the dry side. So I wasn't so impressed with Dark Horse Tavern and I don't know if I'd be willing to come back so quickly. Friendly staff, and good music. It definitely one of the smallest dark horse taverns I've been too on the island but it's still nice inside. The service was good I just was not crazy about the seasoning in the wings, well cooked just lacked flavor. The mozzarella sticks were terrible. Salty and had the freshly thawed taste to them. Just met at The Dark Horse with a bunch of friends on my block, and was presently surprise by our waiter, Regina. A complete rockstar, very attentive, super friendly, great photographer, super hospitable, and on point with the service. She made our experience that much better. Don't bother. I've never liked this place but for some reason I keep giving it another chance. The food is just blah, the beer is luke warm, and the service just isn't great. The drinks are completely watered down. The bathroom is disgusting. It's a glorified dive bar but I've actually been in way better dive bars than this one where the staff is actually friendly. The "bouncers" are for the lack of a better term....complete jerks on ego trips. With so many better options in the area, skip this place. Not worth it. After the way the incredibly rude bouncers treated me, my friends, and other people coming and going, I will NEVER go back here again and would strongly discourage anyone else from going here. read more

I thoroughly enjoyed Dark Horse Tavern. We arrived about 6:30 and were able to sit outside at a high top. They have about 8 tables outside and they were not full. There was a lot of parking in the area and I was able to get close. Our server was doubling as the hostess because like most other restaurants they are short staffed. Luckily that didn't hinder the service or the time it took to get our order. I had a wedge salad and asked for both chicken and steak to be added. It was very good and there was enough left over for my lunch the next day. My friend had a bacon cheeseburger on a pretzel roll. He gets it often and said it was very good. My daughter also had a burger on a pretzel roll. My one criticism is that I believe the bacon on my wedge salad was out of a bag. It didn't have the crispness or flavor of fresh bacon. It tasted much more like the commercial precooked bacon you can buy at Costco. read more

Wow... everybody gets to have an off night... but what a disappointment on our 2nd visit to DHMP. Our first was so good, and there were menu items we really wanted to try! The bar was packed when we walked in, but all the high tops seemed empty... until you noticed they were all dirty. We sat for 15 minutes at the lone clean table (with 6 seats) and were met with disapproval for choosing that table. 10 minutes more before menus and drink orders. It was a full 30 minutes before we left for a spot down the street. Maybe Fridays are that much different from Saturdays here? What a Jeckyl and Hyde moment. We have visited the Dark Horse Tavern in Massapequa Park several times for dinner. The food is delicious. We have ordered many of their food items from appetizers, burgers, sandwiches, wings to desserts and it is always fresh and delicious. It has always been an amazing experience from food and drinks to the wait staff. We recently had our soon to be daughter-in-law's bridal shower there and again they did not disappoint. We decided on a brunch shower which had a variety of food options and drinks to choose from. Victoria and Nicole worked so hard from the set-up, service and clean up and we really appreciate all their hard work. Highly recommend for lunch, dinner or any type of party. It's probably a decent place to grab a drink. They have a nice selection of beers. However, the food for me was disappointing. We ordered 8 piece boneless wings to start. The sweet and spicy Thai sauce was really good. The wings were okay. And only two tiny celery sticks and two tiny carrot sticks with a side of blue cheese dressing? "Tiny" is not an exaggeration. I ordered the grilled cheese. It was on Texas toast, so the sandwich had some heft to it. However, the bread didn't really taste fresh, and the cheese wasn't melted completely. It was cold. The fries were also cold, and not memorable. I didn't send it back, although I probably should have. Normally I would have said something, but I just didn't. A burger was also ordered, and according to the other guest, it was decent. I have to say that the service was pretty good; no complaints about the server at all. But they should invest in water pitchers instead of removing your glasses to the bar for refills. To be fair, a friend of mine previously had a burger here, and she said it was one of the best burgers she ever had. That's why we wanted to try it here in the first place. I may or may not come back here for food in the future. But if I do, I would definitely order something different. And I'll update this review. Also, I would have no qualms about coming here for a drink. It looks like a good place to catch a game if you're into sports. New spot on park blvd which adds another decent option in the village of massapequa park. Been here a few times since its opened and overall was pretty happy with it. The bar service everytime has been great and the bartender was very friendly. I love that they have happy hour prices Monday thru Saturday from 12-7pm. Drink specials are good and food specials are also nice. Food wise the spicy chicken sandwich was decent and the cajun tots dipped in blue cheese were awesome. Wings were very average, basically wings thrown in franks(which is how they advertise it). Bbq wings were a little better but still average. Tap selection is rather big and overall their beer menu is great. Scenery is very dark, I guess thats what their going for but maybe a little too dark. Other then that not much change since the old bar. Plenty of tvs to watch the games on. Overall a nice spot to go to watch any sporting event with some great special/happy hour prices. read more

This place is usually good to grab a quick drink, nothing fancy. I give two stars because the "bouncer" (which I'm not sure why they even have bouncers because it's not a club, and it's never packed) is rude. I have been here quite a few times on the late night because I get out of work at midnight. I have a friend that just moved here from Georgia and she unfortunately forgot her physical ID but she also had another form of ID with her picture & date of birth. The bouncer clearly saw her looking for her physical license outside the bar through the window. She couldn't find it so she told me she has it uploaded on her phone in the wallet app. As we were walking in to see if those forms of ID would suffice, the bouncer was already shaking his head "No." I assumed they might be closing early since nobody was in there so I said "oh are you closing?" And he replied "No, I know she didn't find her ID." So I gave him mine told him I'm a frequent customer (also we are both 33 years old.. not like we're in our early 20s) & told him she has her actual ID uploaded on the app but it's a Georgia drivers license. He replied "that's funny if you were frequent I would know who you are & we can't accept her Georgia license." Listen, I know the lines of accepting mobile IDs are a little blurry but there's always a nice way of handling situations. From him shaking his head No before we even stepped foot in the bar to his smug attitude, I was very put off. Also to be clear, the times that I have been there I have never seen him there either. Either way, I'm sure they don't care because, well who am I... but I'll just stick with Mcgorey's around the corner moving forward. read more

Old fashion- didn't have Woodford bourbon which isn't high end so I went with bullet. Lacked sugar and no cherry. Not horrible but not made correctly. 2. Sat outside for my first "dine out" during this covid mess. I enjoyed a delicious California wrap for lunch. Everything from the service to the food was great! They have spacious seating with everything cleaned and wiped down often. The guacamole was freshly made and the drinks were very refreshing in the humid weather. We had the pleasure of eating at Dark Horse in the late afternoon yesterday. We sat in the back because we didn't want a high top in the front. This is a sports bar so there were tvs and music everywhere. There wasn't a crowd at that hour(which was great for us.) We asked our waitress Paige if she could lower the music and she had no trouble obliging. Paige was charming and helpful (and patient). We both ordered hamburgers and onion rings. The onion rings are probably some of the best my husband ever ate.. I agree. They were great. The hamburgers came out hot, juicy and perfect. I couldn't even finish mine - as much as would have liked to. Next time, we will try something new and always ask for Paige. She was just wonderful. read more

I ate at the new Dark Horse with my wife on a Friday evening. The place looked great. Classic rock music that wasn't too loud to have a conversation. Service was OK. I liked that they had original Strongbow Dry Cider on tap. We started with chips & guac which was good. Honey BBQ wings were lousy; they were soft and rubbery. I had a burger & fries which was pretty good. I also got a Jameson on the rocks, and they charged me an extra $3 for "the rocks." WTF?! My wife had shrimp tacos which she said tasted weird. Then she got nauseous and was vomiting at home. I wanted to like this place, but it'll probably be a while before we find ourselves there again. read more

This was probably some of the most disgusting food I ever ate. I didn't really care for the previous restaurant "Castaways" but at least it was half edible. I can't speak to the ambiance since I did takeout. I ordered chicken fingers for my kid, fish tacos and steak panini. The steak in the sandwich was the grossest piece of "meat" ever with pretend grill marks on it. I ate the bread and the cheese instead. My husband's fish taco was a burned hunk of a mystery fish in a flour soft shell, sprinkled with cheese on top. I don't know if Taco Bell makes fish tacos, but I imagine this is what it would taste like if they did, maybe worse. The chicken fingers were dry and crunchy. Not like "yum crunchy", but like "ew what is in this baked in that is so so crunchy?" Maybe the bar is fun and it's a good atmosphere, but the food I tasted this evening confirmed I'll never even try it out. 1 Star for getting the order correct, I appreciate that. read more

Stay away. Bouncer and bartender lack brainpower and don't want your money. They won't let you in with a valid ID if you don't have facial hair. I left a review on Google and the owner responded to it, lying saying I should come back with a valid ID.... Meanwhile they turned down my ID that's valid through 2027 and 100% legitimate/gov't issued. Snipped my ID then returned it, and then bouncer wouldn't let me even talk to manager. We came here last night after The Good Life down the street denied us a table for dinner since my friend was wearing a tank top. When we asked if they had a "no male tank top policy" they laughed and said no as if we were crazy. Thank you guys for being so welcoming to us and my friends exposed biceps.
