I like Dark Matter coffee. I like that this is close to work so I can drop in for a drink before work, at lunch or after work. The coffee meets all expectations. And the design is funky and modern but with some throw back flair. Staff hasn't been excellent, but nothing bad...just felt less than what you could be giving for a $4-5 12oz or less nitro coffee. anyway, I recommend for your caffeine fix in this neighborhood. read more

If you are particular about your coffee, then this place is your jam. The Dark Matter coffee is amazing...all of it from cold brew, drip, lattes or iced, you won't be sorry. The staff is uber friendly and knows their coffee. I'm always game to try their signature lattes as they never disappoint. The ambiance at this location is super cool. Cool murals highlighted with purple lights. While there isn't a ton of seating, there is some and it is both cool and comfy. They have free wi-fi but know that sometimes the music is a little loud so I wouldn't take a conference call there. Pro-tip: Grab a bag of unicorn blood (ok, they will do this for all their beans but who doesn't want to type unicorn blood in a review?) and they will give you a complimentary cup of coffee. read more

This coffee shop is everything that I've ever needed in my daily work life. The baristas are more than helpful and welcoming and they whip up a mean iced latte. Had to stop coming so much because I found myself here every day. Highly recommend if you're looking for a strong, not too sweet, real espresso drink. read more

Love what the guys from dark matter come up with when they set to do a new shop in Chicago. Always a funky style but it seems to work. The coffee is always great and the baristas are very welcoming as well as knowledgeable. The only bad thing is finding good parking. I waited 10 mins for iced latte but I didn't mind it the wait at all since it was a cool place to sit and observe everything. Black splash nitro (3.5 stars): bourbon barrel aged with centennial hops. This actually tasted relatively close to a stout. It didn't have much of a nitro finish to it and poured closer to a regular cold brew draft. Would love to return to try the original! Staff was really patient explaining all the different brews and very nice. read more

I like this coffee a lot! And they sell ceramic Bee House drippers here for cheaper than you can get them on Amazon! Score! They don't have decaf coffee which I normally would commend because coffee but when you suffer from unfortunate anxiety and HAVE to have decaf, well, that makes me less understanding. They had some merchandise for sale, tee shirts and cups (very expensive but beautiful cups) but no bumper stickers, but they do have decaf espresso drinks which was nice. The customer service was okay, not much more than you would expect at any hipster coffee joint, a sniff and a hair flick in my direction is probably on par with what I would think. Just picked up a Barrel-Aged Mocha (chocolate, vanilla, barrel-aged espresso shot) to go - that's damn good. By far the best cup of coffee I've had in a long time. However, was it $4.75 for 8 oz. good? Unfortunately, yes. My accountant may be reluctant, but you have my business. read more

Super cute coffee spot with a fun vibe. There isn't really much food (a few pastries) there but I think that speaks volumes about the quality of the coffee. The Barrel-Aged Mocha was super delicious and well worth it! I love discovering independent coffee shops and this one was a good find! Even though I'm not a hard-core coffee drinker, I love the eclectic vibe of this place, especially the barrel-aged mocha drink. They even make it half-caf for me, no questions asked. It has a unique, delicious taste that I can't explain so you will have to try it for yourself to see if you agree! I am still transfixed by the awesome yellow- and purple-swirly floor and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. We were passing by and saw the purple sign for Dark Matter and had to pick up a pound of coffee beans. Amazingly, we were given the option for a free coffee upon the purchase of the bag of coffee. Score! They have a cold-brew option on tap, and my husband might have been the only idiot to get cold brew coffee in freezing outside temperatures. There were a few options from other local businesses in terms of food, but not a wide spread. It seems that this coffee bar has just opened recently and I'm mildly impressed by how well it seems to be running at this point. read more

Love that this place opened up near my office! Trippy decor. I typically get cortados, but the agave latte is delicious! The prices, however, are much more than I'm used to paying. But, treat yoself. Glad to have an option better than Sbux and DD in the area. read more

By far the best coffee shop I've been to! Walked by yesterday and I checked out the shop from the outside when a Metra Employee exiting the place sparked up a quick conversion with me. He asked me if I had ever been to Dark Matter before and he convinced me to go in and try it. I had the Vanilla suburbs and I was instantly obsessed! The service was great and I was amazed by the design inside. The pipework drawn on the wall looked so realistic and blended in with the real pipes. Amazing coffee shop that everyone has to check out. Wow was I glad when Meddle moved in! Coffee is a way of life for me. For months, during construction, we kept peeking in the windows to check on their progress. I treat myself each weekend with a cappuccino (or two) and bagel with chive cream cheese. This is embarrassing to admit, but here goes...I have a weird thing about drinking coffee products out of clear cups and was crushed the first time they served my cappuccino in a clear rocks glass. I also feel that a cappuccino is just not the same out of a to go cup. As stupid as it sounds, the clear rocks glass was enough to be a deal breaker for me, meaning, I wouldn't return. I'm happy to report that the staff has been willing to make my orders in their lovely Dark Matter mugs instead! Whew! Crisis averted. (yes...first world problems) read more

The place is designed as if from a weird dream-totally love it! Super friendly baristas making the experience of your morning coffee a great start of the day. The do not have fancy hipster slow coffee, like chemex/v60/aeropress and so on, but they do have great espresso and espresso-based drinks, including barrel aged coffee, which smells and tastes very inspiring. Braved the rain today to try this place out. This is a great spot to visit on a dreary Chicago day. The decor is bright and unique, and there's a "wake-up" vibe with the music. I decided to try a recommended drink and went with the bourbon barrel aged mocha. So delicious! The drink is rich and creamy with the distinctive taste of bourbon. Without the alcohol of course. These guys are awesome. They know their coffee but are not snobs - friendly, excited to share their knowledge. After a spectacular lid fail (in which I lost an entire fresh cup just outside their door, totally my fault), the counterman felt so bad for me he gave me a new cup on the house. All a big bonus, when their coffee is the best in Chicago. Regular coffee is always rich and full of flavor. I usually go to the Mothership, and while this location definitely has a different feel (less grunge), the baristas attitudes and the quality of the coffee were equally excellent. read more

Great coffee, comfortable seats, TERRIBLE place to work or study. The music is so loud that they could not even hear my order and, after repeating it twice, still made the wrong drink! On the upside, the loud music is at least really good music :). Just don't plan on coming here for work or study. read more

Love the coffee and the staff. I usually go for cappuccinos but their drip coffee is perfect black and has a ton of flavor. The staff is always very friendly, funny, and helpful.
