Mayan Mocha (left) Barrel Aged Mocha (right)

Needed a quick caffeine boost and saw this spot. The decor drew me in. Went in and there was ample seating and nice murals throughout the place. Lots of accessories and beans on display for purchase. Big seating area in the front and back. But a coffee shop is only great if their coffee is great... and boy does Dark Matter do it right. Both mochas were freshly made. The espresso was made fresh. Super aromatic. Each puck was used only once. The Mayan mocha had a deep chocolate flavor profile with kicks of spiciness from the cayenne. Amazing drink. The barrel mocha was equally amazing. Woody barrel flavor, sweeten just right, and depths of chocolate flavors. If you're in the area and need coffee, this is the spot.

DELICIOUS and super unique coffee! never expected to have cayenne pepper in my mayan mocha but i actually LOVED the kick it added, and it really showed me that whoever created the menu knew what they were doing and were very well versed in the nuances of flavor. service was great, and it's a great care to sit and chitchat. i love the bright maximalist decor but i will say that the music is pretty loud so you'd need a good pair of noise canceling headphones if you want to study or work.

((4.75 stars)) Dark Matter is a colorful coffee shop planted on Bowery and 1st. large amount of space and seating options for enjoying coffee, doing some work, catching up with a friend, or just being in your head for solace. the space is is vibrant and give its nods to music in the decor, vibe, and personality of its various locations spread across America. while Dark Matter has a great upbeat energy--it's not crazy obnoxiously loud visually or sound-wise...it's a good balance for people who want the kick of caffeine and some stimuli without it being frenzied and hectic. the coffee? really good...you have choices here as they rotate coffees daily for their "drip" and you can pick from a variety of coffee roasts for an Americano or whatever your go-to coffee is. every time I have been here, I typically ask what roasts are available and choose accordingly or go for the ever-changing drip coffee. tbh, if you don't know what you like based on a written description of the coffees...just tell the counter person and barista the types of flavors you like in a coffee and they won't steer you wrong as there is a fair amount of variety in what is served here in terms of flavor profile and roast type or geography. ya got options, kid! the folks here are knowledgeable about coffee in a non-robotic way...there's genuine enthusiasm behind the coffee and when they talk about it. tbh, that's refreshing when often times you go to places and know you're being sold a commodity whereas as at Dark Matter...you're talking to people who enjoy making and drinking coffee and haven't made it into a total "transaction"...yeah it is a business, but you get that they are about the caffeine culture and that's aces in my book. whether you're in the area looking for a casual cup of coffee or a destination...Dark Matter has the the relaxed flexibility to make the trip there a memorable and flavorful one. and obviously, you can buy bags of their various roasts if you rather brew in the comfort of your home. drink up, amigos!

I love amazing coffee finds and Black Matter definitely falls into this bucket. An import from Chicago, the New York store is absolutely gorgeous. It's painted floor to ceiling with beautiful and colorful art that accentuates the identity of this coffee shop. From the retro feel of artifacts like the old fashion TV, the diner chairs, and the record player, this coffee shop takes you somewhere else. I ordered the mocha. As much as I love chocolate, I don't really order mochas as they are usually too sweet for me. The mocha here is perfect. It is probably the best mocha I've ever had! They also bake all their pastries in house. Multiple restrooms too - the code was 0420 when I visited! This place is pretty much perfect. Casual, great service. Large seating area, inside and outside. Please come and create your own adventure.

I came here recently with my friend for a coffee on a Tuesday afternoon. It wasn't super busy, since we got here around 5:30pm. There's a bunch of tables and it seems like it would be a great place to get work done. I ordered a decaf cortado. It was a little smaller than most other cortados, but the flavor was good and the milk was steamed well. Good service here, too!

What a great place to chill and have your coffee! I came here Sat around 4pm, the place wasn't packed. Lots of space to seat and chill. The staff were super friendly and knowledgeable. The guy who took our order guide us through the menu and suggested drinks according our preferences! He also gave us samples of two different cold brews that they have. My fav was the vanilla suburbs nitro. My husband had an espresso, strong! Really strong haha... I had the Iced Mayan Mocha which had chocolate, agave, cayenne and cinnamon. Very good and different. I felt tempted to order a cinnamon roll but I had just eaten and I was full. I'm coming back for it!! They looked amazing. Adios Amigos! See you soon.

Not your quiet suburban coffee shop, super fun punk scene feel and music volume. Coffee is very good and some unique takes on the with things like brewing with hops. Barrel aged beans are frequently featured.

Great coffee! Love the unique options, particularly the Dolor de Oro! Such a delicious flavor combo with some great heat! Must love spicy! As for pastries, they were 50/50 for me. Got the Oaxacan Brownie and took it home to eat with ice cream. The brownie was sadly dense and dry. Even the ice cream wasn't enough to soften it up. I also got the Cherry Cola Danish and it was decent although the pastry part also seemed dense compared to most but it did have good flavor, particularly the cherry cola center. I ended up just scooping out the center. The service was also great which is way more than I can say for most other coffee spots in the area. I will definitely go again and work my way through the menu.

This place is an absolute vibe. Artisanal chocolate, fantastic coffee. Great spots who are either sit outside and watch the people walk by or work on your laptop. Water station in the back. LOTS OF SPACE. Super cool staff giving Punky funky vibes. And awesome rock legends photography. Breakfast Sandos for on the go and other cafe snacks.

Great punk on the Bowery themed coffee spot from Chicago has made its way to, um...the Bowery. Adorned with all things CBGB from Blondie and the Ramones, to Bad Brains and Sick of It All, they offer a wide variety of coffee with a friendly staff and fun atmosphere.

Drip coffee is quite strong. It's on the darker roast side. The space is pleasant and the staff are responsive.

The cookie I was most excited for was the corn cookie and the chocolate chip also looked really good. Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed by the black & white cookie because for some reason I thought it was a chocolate cookie with white chocolate chips, but it was actually just a regular cookie with black and white chips lol. The cookies themselves were really solid though. Nice light crisp around the edges with a chewy center without being overly gooey or underbaked. Definitely on the thicker side too, which I liked. Next time I'll have to try one of their espresso drinks!

The Jeju Green Tangerine Matcha honestly just tastes like a tangerine selter drink but in the best way, because I don't typically enjoy seltzer or carbonated beverages. I really enjoy the flavor and the carbonation isn't too strong, probably because I brought it home to drink. I don't really taste the matcha but I would definitely still order this again. 2. Matcha Einspanner. This is my first time having an Einspanner so I have no idea what I was expecting but this is DELICIOUS. It's so silky and smooth and the TASTE is just right up my alley. The matcha is light but you can still taste it. Absolutely, would drink this all the time if I could. 3. Purple Sweet Potato Latte. This. This. Omg, why haven't I tried this sooner?! The first sip and initial taste, I almost tasted nothing, just milk. And then all of a sudden, there's an explosion of flavor in your mouth. As a sweet potato lover, I was in heaven. I have absolutely no words for this drink, just try it. 100/10 recommend. This is probably my favorite one out of the 3 that I bought. I went around ... 2:45PM on a Friday and most of the seats were taken, if I remember correctly. There were a decent amount of seats and the space was decent. I liked the minimal aesthetic they had for the design of the interior. Not to forget, the staff at the register was absolutely wonderful, she answered all my questions, she's so sweet. I think I'm disappointed that I haven't tried this place sooner. Y'all get out of your comfort zone and try the Purple Sweet Potato Latte !! Or if not, just try this place out. I will definitely be recommending the Purple Sweet Potato Latte to all my family and friends.

I ordered an iced matcha einspanner ($6.95) with oat milk ($0.75) and loved that it already comes with a shot of espresso, so it was essentially a dirty matcha einspanner. I tried each layer on its own before mixing everything together and it was all really good. The matcha cream is the right amount of sweet and creamy and you can taste the matcha with just a hint of coffee. Since I'm a coffee fiend I added a bit more espresso when I got back to the hotel and it tasted even better while still keeping the matcha as the dominant flavor. Next time I would ask for less ice since it was freezing that morning, but on a warmer day the ice level would be perfect. Would love to come back to try their other drinks or order the einspanner again as a hot drink.

I probably never leave reviews in general, especially negative ones, but this experience was so…read moreegregious that I honestly felt like I had to say something. I've worked in restaurants and bars long enough to understand that staff drinking happens, but this was on another level entirely. I came in with a group of friends and one of the bartenders, Will, was so visibly drunk that it made the entire experience uncomfortable. Slurred speech, wobbling behind the bar, taking orders while chewing food with his mouth open -- it was honestly embarrassing to watch. He looked like he absolutely did not want to be there. At one point, my group had been trying to get his attention for another round for quite a while while he stood around talking with coworkers. We then watched staff take a shot together, and when he finally came over he burped mid-conversation and literally had whatever he had just been drinking dribbling down his neckbeard. That was the moment where the whole thing went from unprofessional to just gross. What made it worse was that it didn't seem isolated to one employee. Throughout the night we watched staff openly taking shots and drinking behind the bar like it was a house party instead of a business. There's a difference between bar culture and complete lack of professionalism, and this crossed that line hard. One of the friends I was with actually frequents the DUMBO location and said that the last time she was there, the same bartender also seemed intoxicated, which makes this feel less like a bad night and more like an ongoing issue. The DUMBO location itself is in an amazing spot, which makes it even more disappointing. But ownership seriously needs to get control of what's going on there before someone gets hurt or the place develops a reputation for having drunk staff on the clock. Unfortunately, the experience was uncomfortable enough that my girlfriends and I won't be coming back. I genuinely hope the employee mentioned gets help if this is a regular thing, because nobody should be working service in that condition.
