My wife and I are from out of state and Darlin's was recommended by a family member. It's a quaint little place located in a late 19th century building. We were treated to one of the best breakfast selections around. Excellent taste and very generous portions are definitely the norm. My Latte and my wife's chai were a welcomed addition to our perfect breakfast. What a delightful cafe this is, located in a building that dates back to the 1800s. Our breakfast was a great traditional meal of excellent bacon, eggs, hash browns and toast. They offer gluten free toast also. Their specialty hot drinks were very good. This was our first time to eat here. They have been open a little over a year. We are looking forward to coming again and trying their lunch menu. Flatonia is such a quaint historic town. I highly recommend making it a destination stop when traveling I -10. read more

On our way to Arizona. Nothing else on the freeway and I looked up Yelp to help me find breakfast. Lo and behold I found this delicious little restaurant. The atmosphere was amazing. First off, the space is adorable and the staff friendly! However, this is the first time I've ever visited a boutique style eatery and gotten a sandwich on .89 store bought bread! This combined with the pressed into a circle deli turkey meat which cost me $15 is the reason for my 2 star review. Was it bad? Ehh, it wasn't terrible, it just wasn't what I had hoped it would be. If the opportunity presents itself, I'd like to try the breakfast, but I won't make a special trip. Step it up a little, darlin'. read more

I arrived on a day when a large part of the town was out having a get together in the park. We found Darlin's Diner and heard the Allman Bros music playing from the second floor speaker. I felt at home immediately. Several of the wait staff were new, but they were friendly, and got the food to us quickly. I had the breakfast sandwich - actually two sandwiches in this order and ate both, which was a mistake. One would have been plenty, but hey, I was on vacation, and it was delish! Strongly recommend. Super cute diner right off I 10 about half way between San Antonio and Houston. We arrived about an hour before closing on a Sunday to a warm welcome from the owner. Our party of 7 was seated quickly but although everyone was friendly our service was very slow. We were disappointed that the full menu wasn't available- only breakfast/brunch served on weekends, no lunch menu. Our coffees and food were good- nothing particularly amazing, but solid southern comfort food. I loved the ambiance and history mixed with chic decor. Don't waste your money here! The girl taking the order was super friendly. However, the food is mediocre at best for an extravagant price. I had the pick two combo - club sandwich and soup which arrived soggy and cold at the table after 15 minutes of sitting on the counter (while waiting on my husband's quiche to bake). My husband approached them twice to ask that it be brought to the table to be told they would tend to it. We understand that one employee was busy taking orders but there was another standing behind the counter. More annoyed that they would not allow us to just get it ourselves. Soggy grilled bread and congealed potato soup are less than appealing. Beyond disappointing as the restaurant is cute. read more

This modern twist on a classic diner is beautiful and delicious. The breakfast sandwiches are hearty and tasty, made on fresh homemade biscuits. The coffee is delicious. And the pricing is reasonable. I would love to see this diner do well. Which is why I have a few suggestions. I can get on board with the more modern feel, but to me, "diner" implies great service and home cooking. The cooking is spot on. The service needs some tweaking. This place is set up to order at the counter instead of having table side ordering. I don't actually mind that. But then when you pay it asks for tip. Ok. But tip is based on service. Don't get me wrong, I'm always going to tip. But whether that tip is 15% or 20% or more is based on the service. The gal taking the order is sitting down with her iced latte in hand. That sends a message too. The food was amazing. The coffee was great. But half the time we had to ask for more coffee because no one is checking on us. No one seems to "own" the table. So additional service is hit or miss. At one point I took my empty cup to them. I actually really liked this place because it IS beautiful and the food and coffee are fantastic. But when every single employee has an iced latte in hand and I can't get a refill, that's frustrating. (And this is not an exaggeration. Ever single front counter person was sipping an iced latte.) Was this because we didn't tip before service? I don't know. We certainly left a cash tip on the table. Everyone there was even super friendly. They just weren't paying attention to the most basic diner detail. Coffee. I'd still highly recommend this place and come back myself. I think they are really good. But I think with very minor adjustments they could be fantastic. read more

I got a seat in the window. I ordered the biscuits and gravy, two eggs, and hash browns. With a hot coffee, I was able to look out on downtown and enjoy the ambient music. (Only complaint I have is the music in the kitchen clashed with the dining room). The attentive waitress delivers the food. Eggs to order, check. Biscuits soft, check. Hash, crispy, check. The greatest thing I can say about the meal is how the gravy didn't need any additional seasoning. It was perfect. The staff is great and ownership welcoming. read more

The place is very cute and comfy but the diner is not the regular diner atmosphere... walked in thinking I would be waited on but you have to place your own order at the counter and get ur own drinks.... And secondly I ordered a blt and it was extremely cold and had only 2 little pieces of bacon on it... and the potatoes where dried up and had no taste to them and were cold.... I have been here MANY times for breakfast although I do not live in the area. It is always REALLY GOOD. I have had almost everything on the breakfast menu. I highly recommend the migas. Today, I had lunch for the first time. I chose an off the menu "build your own" burger. The waitstaff are very flexible and really good about getting whatever you want. The burger was FABULOUS. the fries are the perfect crispy outside with warm, fluffy inside too. It is a relaxed environment and doesn't feel rushed. I always look forward to stopping in for breakfast and NOW I have a great lunch place too!! I always came here for the hashbrowns and unfortunately they changed them to regular square bits of potatoes. Not only that but sometimes the staff can be rude and no welcoming. No one came to ask us for refills and anything we did need it took 20+ mins to get it. even just something simple like ketchup. The food took an hour and 20 mins to arrive. After bring this to their attention, we received dirty looks from all the staff for the rest of the vist. We were not the only ones feeling this in the restaurant, we watched a large table get up and leave before their food arrived because of the lack of attention from the servicer and how long everything took. read more

Great atmosphere, friendly staff and the food was excellent! It's not what you would expect for a small town seemingly out in the middle of nowhere. I didn't take pics of the food. The pancakes were huge, oatmeal was amazing, side of salsa was fresh and good on scrambled eggs. My husband had chicken fried steak and eggs and he didn't have any complaints. The kids enjoyed the food, chocolate milk and latte:) you can tell there were a lot of regulars by the welcome they get coming in the door. My grandfather recommended this place and I'm glad he did. In town for Round Top, woke up later than I wanted to, almost went to the McDonald's down the road to grab a quick bite. But something in me said to stop and enjoy a nice breakfast and start the day better. I'm glad we did, this diner is everything done right. It's small, decorated simply and simple isn't usually done right. The decor, cream and black, large probably original door with hints of stained glass. Music playing softly in the background... "I'll Fly Away Old Glory"... quaintly reminded me of my grandmother singing next to me in church. Breakfast food is very well done, great banana pancakes, bacon and hash browns. My husband had omelette and a biscuit. This wasn't a fast breakfast, but when you get away from everyday life, you should stop and take the time to enjoy the people you are with and the atmosphere of small town life at its best.
