For whatever reason, it's hard to find a good brunch / lunch on I-10 when driving from San Antonio to Houston. Greasy spoon franchises like Denny's, IHOP, Cracker Barrel, etc. exist only on the outskirts of major cities. That's OK- this diner is perfect. Situated midway between the two metropolises, the restaurant looks more like a cafe (with the improved cleanliness) but serves high caliber diner fare. Basics (e.g. omelets) are well executed, but the standout is the bacon. The bacon is slightly thick, lean, and has a pleasant touch of sweetness. This is also one of the few non-Starbucks establishments to get an espresso drink between San Antonio to Houston. Prices (and perhaps wait times) are higher than the diners, but the quality is worth it. Even picky family members should be content. read more

What's up! It's Mark the reviewer here. Had the chicken fried steak at Darlin's Diner in Flatonia. Fairly good food for $14. Definitely filled me up. Eggs were okay. They were just eggs. Toast was also okay. I didn't add butter to it so that might have been why it was alright. I loved the hashed potatoes on the side but I haven't ever had hashed potatoes I didn't like. Now let's talk about the main part of the meal, which is the chicken fried steak. Personally, I've had better chicken fried steak before and I wasn't too impressed. The steak felt a bit dry and lacked some flavor but the gravy on top helped with both of those. It just lacked the oomph I need from my chicken fried steak. But still, the chicken fried steak was above average and better than anything I can cook. I would probably order something else on the menu next time since it didn't leave a memorable impression. Staff was super friendly and nice. Had conversation with us and took our photos for the Instagram. Also they had fun activities you can do for a discount like signing a song or dancing. This is not a diner!!!! If you are traveling, like we were, expecting a diner this is not it! It's a cafe. When a place is open from 7-2 we expected breakfast and brunch. Breakfast is only served till 11. They have a very limited menu of a few sandwiches and salads. The food was not good....mediocre at best and that's a stretch. I am giving 3 stars for the redeeming qualities it did have. The coffee bar was good and had a nice selection. The place was adorable, very clean and quaint. There was only 1 person working the front but she was friendly. If you want coffee this is a lovely place to have it. If you're looking for lunch keep looking. read more

The food and service at Darlin's Diner is wonderful. I had the eggs Benedict and my husband had the Darlin's breakfast - both were great! The Darlin's breakfast included 2 huge pancakes that were the best I've ever tasted and the oatmeal was smooth and creamy. The owner and wait staff are lovely and courteous people. First off I like seeing a young couple working hard in their own business. Everyone was very friendly and the servers were prompt in taking care of us. However, our food was barely warm and my over medium eggs were cold and cooked to the point of a boiled egg. Also, employees had masks around their chins not covering nose and mouth. The owner wore hers down most of the time therefore employees will follow example. Arrived for breakfast. My husband was in heaven. Real nice looking omelet. I don't like breakfast foods so the cook made a BLT especially for me. It too looked great on the think-cut home made bread. It was delicious with think bacon and plenty of mayonnaise. Loved it, tasty. We sat up near the front of the business. Watched the residents come and go from the post office while we ate. Also located across the street is the original manually operated train switching station. We wanted to watch the train come through town but must not have stayed long enough. The food here was great - the issue was without a doubt the service. We came with a party of four on Father's Day and put down our name for what we were told was a 20-25 min wait - totally fine. Checked out the shop next door, came back 10 mins later to learn our name had already been called early, and now we're back to the bottom of the list, according to the hostess. We continue to wait on the sidewalk (where we are told to wait) and 30 more minutes go by, as we hear multiple names called and tables seated. We finally ask the hostess where we are on the list, and she tells us she's called our name three times and we're back to the bottom of the list. It seems impossible that all four of us would have heard all the other names called, as we watch the hostess come out onto the sidewalk many times to make sure everyone heard her when she called out names, but for some reason never heard our own names called. She even suggested we actually confront a group of customers at a table, who arrived after us, as she is sure they heard our name called. It was just all incredibly odd, and she was pretty confrontational. We obviously didn't take her suggestion. In the end, we waited outside for over an hour before we were seated. I don't think I've ever written a restaurant review before. This was just such a jarring experience. If you go, I would recommend sitting silently on the sidewalk and making sure a member of your party is standing as close to the front door as possible so you're sure not to miss anything. read more

Flatonia has a new diner! Darlin's Diner is a beautiful new locally-owned restaurant with great staff and service. Right downtown, across from city hall. They serve breakfast 7 to 11 Mon thru Fri and 7 until 2 Sat and Sun. Lunch Mon-Fri 11 to 2. Everything is great. They have their own coffee. Top Heartbrand Beef burgers. Great breakfasts of all types. Good BLTs and other sandwiches. This is a great addition to Flatonia, and a perfect stop if you are traveling down I-10, about halfway between Houston and San Antonio. read more

Really wish that I could help people understand how crazy a small town diner is on a Sunday rush. Especially when it's the only breakfast serving Diner, not a RESTAURANT in the city of Flatonia. Here's the explanation. I know the diner does not have one waitress.They have a whole team working together so it may take you ten minutes to get your coffee because there's five tables in front of you with one girl making everyone's drinks. The system may go down, and the tickets aren't getting transferred to the back, and they had no clue. May also not have a clue that emergency life happens and a cook may have to leave unexpectedly.So you have one grill and one cook that could cause a hold up on the food.It is really sad when waitresses are so disrespected and treated like trash.When they are not receiving their food according to their plans.It is not the waitresses fault. Life is already hard enough to have a job that's so demanding to be treated like trash. I would only recommend coming to Darlin's Diner on a Sunday if you have patience, kindness, and gratitude! I always give a restaurant more than one opportunity to win me over, and today was my second visit at Darlins. This diner has such an incredibly sweet and inviting ambiance. But the service...oh my! There isn't one good thing I can say about the service. We arrived at 10:45am today for brunch. There were several open tables and we were sat approx 5-10 minutes after we arrived. We then waited for an additional 15 minute's and needed to flag a waitress down just to get a cup of coffee. The coffee arrived about 10 minutes later. At this point we have been at the diner for about 30 minutes and have just gotten coffee. After the coffee was delivered again we had to flag another waitress down to place a food order. Then we waited and waited. The food never came! At this point we have been at the restaurant for nearly 2 hours and still no food, no coffee refills, and no explanation. We asked someone how much longer we would be waiting after such a long wait and they actually said about another 30 minutes. Can you believe that?!?! We had to get up and walk out at 12:30pm. While waiting, we saw just about every single table need to flag down help and ask for how much longer the wait would be. So unfortunate, because I really wanted to love this place. read more

Nice interior, best French toast I've ever had, hint of cinnamon unbelievable. Bacon is real and perfectly cooked the name of the omelette isn't a lie it's huge and very well done. I love the food and the ambience but today the service was so disappointing and no apology that the sides were forgotten. We waited to order, we waited for our drinks and again for the food and the sides of bacon came when we needed boxes to go. We are from out of town so it seemed like the locals had all the attention. Beware - check your receipts. Wrong charges and they won't refund you. Lol. I gave it a 2 star bc one of the waiter was rude and wrong . Let me explain. This is about principle and not the amount that was charged wrong to me. The menu shows the a la cart biscuit to be $ 2 dollars and they charged me $ 3. I told one of the waiters and she was Nice but I guess the manager On duty came over and said , " well , I didn't change the menu price " but it's 3 dollars now. Is that ok ? ". Ummm , no , it's not bc it's the principle and she was in the wrong. I decided not to make her give me my dollar since she obviously didn't want to .. but I told her fine , I'll get some tea on the way out. She made a smirk and laughed condescendingly. Hold up ! Seriously ? That was petty of her. The bottom line was she's in the wrong and I'm not being petty over a dollar , it's the principle. She is the one with the shorter blonde Hair cut and younger like prob in her early 20s? She needs customer service skills and know when to refund the customer. I see the owner responded to one of the reviews that was bad And was telling her if she wanted her food recooked she would of done it. Well I told them of the price error and they didn't even want to refund and scoffed at me so I doubt they would have "happily" re cooked this persons food. The manager was snotty and even gave me a rude look. I should have given her the eye but whatever . I've never enjoyed a traffic jam so much!! Our family was on vacation just traveling through when we encountered some interstate traffic. We searched for places to eat on Maps and Darlin's popped up. Happy that it wasn't a chain fast food joint, we popped in for lunch. Hands down, the best BLT I've ever eaten. Fresh bread, crisp lettuce, ripe tomato, and thick, crunchy bacon- oh my!! My husband had the chicken bacon ranch and he said it was amazing as well. Both kids built their own burgers and cleaned their plates! They couldn't get enough of the soda from the soda fountain! They'd never had Stubborn Soda before! The atmosphere was inviting and quaint. The decor was a simple and clean black and white with live plants. Service was friendly and quick with lots of smiles. Food is ok. Very over priced. Not much service. You are expected to go get your drink refill. Don't waste your time and money. Go a few doors to the East and visit the Red Vault Bistro.
