As others have mentioned, Darrell's is hard to beat when it comes to poboys. The bread is delicious and we all know that is one of (if not most) key parts to a great poboy! The Darrell's special is definitely my favorite - with the perfect combination of fresh meats (ham, turkey and roast beef)and three cheeses. I love the jalapeño mayo and gravy - it all comes together as something very special. The shrimp poboy is also excellent! My only downside is that they tend to go overboard with the condiments. There has to be a good balance when packing on that much into a sandwich and it tends to be extremely messy. However some people like it that way and it may work for them. I tend to have to request light gravy and sauces and jalapeño mayo on the side. Also note that it is a bar like atmosphere, so casual is the way to go. Keep up the good work Darrell's. Ps. I've been eating here for several years, and have had all the awesome poboys that are available in NOLA as well. Darrell's is every bit as good as anything in NOLA. My favorite is the Darrell's Special, but I've tried several of each sandwich, and they are great. Even if you are traveling through Lake Charles, do yourself a favor and get off of I-10, taking the 210 Loop to the Ryan street exit. We drove from Texas and got here around noon. We were surprised that we got a table right away as the parking lot was completely full. Our waitress was at our table pretty quickly and took our drink and food order. The Surf and Turf and Shrimp Po Boys. They got to the table very hot. I really liked the Surf and Turf (Hot roast beef with sauteed shrimp.) There just didn't seem to be a lot of shrimp on either po boy. It was good enough. Really can't complain but having had po boys from Louisiana for a long time, this just kind of missed the mark with me. I really like the original. Fried and dressed. I struggled with this rating, since it's probably a personal preference thing. Ultimately, though, I felt the place deserved 4 stars for the bread, cheese, and jalapeno mayo, so there you have it. My issue was with the gravy. The first 2 bites were incredible, but after that it just became way too rich for me. And messy. Oh so messy. The first time we went I had the roast beef and this time I opted for the surf and turf. Had I gone with the shrimp, this may have been a 5 star rating, but alas the allure of gravy on a sandwich got me again. That being said, I tried a bite of the ham and cheese which was really very good. The service wasn't great, but you don't go for the service, so I let that go. The place was packed for lunch on a Tuesday. If you weren't in by 11:30, you were waiting for a table. Finally, I would leave the kids at home next time. Wife and I had lunch there today. My first time but not hers. Not a huge menu but a good offering. My wife got the small roast beef sandwich and I got the large surf and turf. Wondered when we sat down why they had such a big stack of paper napkins, that stack was a foot high. Eating that sandwich was just about the messiest meal that I've ever had. But, it was so good. I knocked off one star because of after ordering an $11 sandwich I had to fork out an additional $1.10 for a 50 cent bag of chips. I'm being petty but for the price of the sandwich the chips could have been thrown in. All in all, a good experience and the food was great. read more

Surf n Turk and Darrell's is so good! My family will hit this place up again when we are in LA.

Darrel's was a really hopping place. We arrived in town about ten minutes before opening and we weren't the first person in their parking lot. The place was packed within 30 min of opening. That didn't stop the food and beverages coming out quickly however. My husband and I tried two different sandwiches both were yummy and filling. Was slightly disappointed in all plastic glassware and no side options minus chips. But not enough to not venture back when we are in town again. read more

Hadn't been in here in over 4 years, so thought I would give it a try. Shrimp Po-Boy was pretty good. But eating experience was spoiled by one guy stacking chairs on the surrounding tables at 7:00 pm, and then the bill came. $0.25 for a cup of water and a 4% charge for non-cash payments. I can't remember the last time I got an extra charge for using a credit card in a restaurant, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't during this century. Hire a math student from down the street to help you build the 4% into your prices if it hurts your margins so much. read more

7 of us left the Golden Nugget because we had heard about Darrell's and wanted to try it and because we were tired of paying $16-$18 for a non descript sandwich at The Nugget. In Jennings LA for a wedding and came over to meet some friends in St. Charles for long over due Po Boy. My wife and her friend raved about this place and the po boys while i was a little disappointed in the selections the quality of the offerings were very good. I ordered the regular size Surf n Turf; cajun spiced shrimp with tender slices of roast beef make sure and have the jalapeno mayo . I have to be honest. I lived in Louisiana for 9 years so when poboys come to mind I think of fried catfish, shrimp, and crawfhish. Not roast beef or boiled shrimp. Plus they did not offer French fries as a side item, just chips. When I saw this I no longer wanted a poboy. I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich and chips. My guy ordered the shrimp poboy. I did taste his poboy and it was good. The bread is fresh! Nice and soft. They have a jalapeno mayo that isn't too spicy and adds some flavor. it's not a bad option. Arriving at 1:30 on a Saturday, we found a prime parking spot right by the front door. When we entered, the huge place was packed, which I took as a good sign. The service was very attentive and the food was really tasty. My wife had the Darrell's special, with a combination of meats and cheese with gravy. My daughters had ham and cheese and the BBQ beef. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their food. We came from across the Texas border to eat...say at a table for a seemingly long time with waitresses glancing at us but no one came and waited on us so we got us and went to the bar to sit. We had Bryce (I think) tend to us. He was amazing! He saved the entire experience by recommending drinks and indulging in conversation.
