It's been 13 years since I was last in Lake Charles and I had to go to Darrell's. I love this place. The PoBoys are excellent and the service is great. I had the small Darrell's special with gravy on the side. It was better than I remembered from so long ago. Darrell's has stood the test of time. Stop by and give this place a try... you won't be disappointed!

Old school classic po-boy spot in Lake Charles. Interior is very rad and very dive bar esque. The menu is full of local advertisements and is simple. Get your po boy's. We got their top two most popular options; the roast beef and the roast beef with shrimp. Unfortunately they only have bagged chips as drinks and not fries. The meal itself was very rich and heavy, I think we could have done without the layers of cheese. The flavor is solid and is a good non fried version of the Cajun classic. Can see why this is considered a very top spot on many lists.

The poor boy was amazing. I think I had the ham and rose beef one with the gravy on the side. I'm sorry if you guys do not call it gravy. I had a local take me there to the drive-through. It was probably like a foot-long or a little bit more. I was only able to eat half, but very satisfied.

As many times in my life that I have passed thru Lake Charles, I've never taken the 10 minute detour on Loop 210 to go to Darrell's. If I'm 100% transparent, I've never heard of it. But, I saw a reel on Facebook about two English guys who were ranting and raving over it. Coincidentally, I was passing thru a week later around lunch time and so I decided to stop. Wow. Am I glad I did. First, this place was PACKED OUT on a Friday around 11:30AM. We had to wait about 10 minutes for a table for two. But it was definitely worth the wait. We had the shrimp po-boy. Very good. The shrimp was grilled. Would definitely order again. However, a friend of mine went to school at McNeese in Lake Charles (Go Pokes) and her eyes lit up when we returned to Houston and told her where we ate lunch. She highly recommended that we try the Darrell's Special next time we are there. Coincidentally, we will be passing thru again next weekend so, we are going to stop in again and give the "special" a try. Until then, if you are reading this review, it's an easy 4-star review. Highly recommend. I will say the parking lot is small and parking can be tight. But, what that really means is the food must be really good if you have problems finding parking at a restaurant. Parking was the only negative. Bottom line - Good po-boys. Small menu but everything was delicious. Will definitely go back when we are passing thru Lake Charles. Bon appétit, y'all.

Darrell's is as good as everybody says it is! When you walk in you are greeted by a super friendly staff, seated , and given the menu of about 6 sandwiches. The ambience resembles kind of a sports bar-like atmosphere, and is really laid back. My son ordered the Darrell, and I got the shrimp. They were both fantastic! I will absolutely be back in this fine establishment in the future. Definitely recommended.

Excellent food, top notch and attentive service. We were there on a Saturday at lunch and the parking lot was full it was very crowded, but the service was great and the wait wasn't more than about 10 minutes. It wasn't too noisy and the atmosphere was great!

This was sooooooo good!!! Get the bbq beef sandwich with all the fixings! My friend and I split the large. It was perfect! The bread was sooooooo delicious and the pickle was superb. Can't wait to come back!

This place is fabulous! We are not really Poboy people however, we are now Darrell's Poboy people for sure! It was suggested by three different folks' before we decided to give it a try and we were not dissappointed. From the cheerful hostess and server, to the fact that our order came super fast, to the well-made cocktails. Tyler (Darrell's grandson) gave us the 411 about the 40-year history. From grandma's gravy and its beginnings as a watering hole to 3 moves and a second location in Jennings, it has grown in business exponentially! When you give them a try you will understand why! Next time I get a hankering, I might just take the 2 hour drive from Baton Rouge it is THAT good!

When we walked in, we were welcomed by a nice young man, who promptly seated us, then got our drinks. The waitress was very nice and efficient, took out order, we had ordered 2 small specials and chips, she recommended that we just order a large sandwich and they'd cut it. Saving us about $8. The sandwich arrived quickly and was very Tasty! Highly recommend the Darrell's Special. Sports Bar feel, lots of TV's to watch the games.

It's hard for me to try new poyboys places because where I'm from the best is olde tyme grocery and I have found nothing that compares...This is close in a way! We got the special with no lettuce. Make sure to get the jalapeño mayo on it as it has more flavor. It comes with a pickle slice. The half size is more than enough for one person. The sweet tea was very good. Very busy place and very casual. You choose your own seating when you walk in and if you pay with cash, you go to the register or with card you use your waiter.

This location is a must when I'm in the Lake Charles area. Bar selection is very good and the sandwiches are exceptional. Service is alway prompt and attentive . Laisser le bon temps rouler. While taking a trip back to Lake Charles to visit family we were introduced to Darrell's we were very impressed with the food. I got a Shrimp Po'Boy with Jalapeno Mayonnaise on the side. It was great and fed the whole family! Next time I am in the area I will be sure to stop at Darrell's to get my fix. read more

Man, do these folks know how to make a sandwich. The Darrell's Special is not only a heavenly po' boy, but arguably one of the best sandwiches in that region of the country. If you're driving through Lake Charles for any reason, or if you're looking for a route to/from Nawlins, make sure you pitstop here. read more

We ventured off of I/10 from Houston to New Orleans at the suggestion of a good friend to stop at Darrell's. We were not disappointed! Darrell's is a sports bar type place as previous Yelpers have mentioned. Super clean, super friendly locals and staff - super service. We ordered the Darrell Special and YES - believe the hype. Order it - you will not be disappointed. The sautéed shrimp poboy was amazing as well with the jalapeño mayo. Plenty of napkins on the table - you will need them. Take the loop 210 and stop at Darrell's. You will be so happy you did. read more

Darrell's is probably one of the most solid food businesses is the Lake Charles area. They offer a very simple menu, but one that does not disappoint. Everything about their po-boys is great, from the bread, which almost melts in your mouth, their flavorful sauces, to the savory meat choices. The quality of their sandwiches has been very consistent in just the few years I have been there. Darrell's is a great place for lunch or dinner. The atmosphere is great. Everyone seems pretty friendly. The service is not the quickest ever, but honestly, it is worth the wait. I definitely recommend this restaurant. read more

My husband, our 4 kids and myself ate here for the first time and it was DELICIOUS! Our server, Lauren, was so nice and helpful. My husband ordered the surf and turf, I ordered the roast beef, my kids had the Darrel specials, grilled cheese and a turkey sandwich. Every bit if it was DELICIOUS! Best poboys we've ever had! One of my favorite places. The beer is ice cold, they have Shiner Bock on tap along with a few others but they have more bottled and canned beer. The real reason to go is for the sandwiches. The special may be the best sandwich that you'll ever have. It has a tendency to get a little rowdy as it gets later so bring the kids early but it is a great place to hang out and drink. read more

This place is one of the few in Lake Charles that firmly lives up to the hype. They have an extensive number of beer taps but unfortunately do not print a beer menu. The taps are about what you would expect being mostly craft like options from the major breweries (Goose Island from AB Inbev, Blue Moon from Coors, etc) but they also have a 5 or so handles in the front with local options. My only other critique of the beer is that the staff is really hit or miss on knowing what they even have on tap. The food is fantastic and I strongly recommend the Darrell's Special. It is as sloppy as the menu make you believe and oh so good. Just a note that the menu says "or" by the cheese listing as if it is an option but the wait staff nicely tells you that it comes with all of them unless you want just one kind of cheese on your special! read more

The best poboy ever is the Darrell's special. You need a roll of paper towels cause it's so messy, but it is truly delicious with tons of meat, cheese, and gravy on French bread. Also great is the surf and turf--the special with sautéed seasoned shrimp. No matter what you order the service is good and friendly and the poboys put those even from New Orleans to shame. read more

Stopped in for a quick lunch on the way to New Orleans due to a recommendation from a friend. The po boys were fantastic. I was a little worried initially when I pulled up due to it being a sports bar and me having a child with me, but it was more like a restaurant and the waiter was very kid friendly. My son hasn't stopped talking about how wonderful his po boy was. This will now be our go to place to stop for lunch. Delicious !!! read more

It never fails! I'm out of town and someone asks where I'm from; as soon as I say Lake Charles, envariably the response will be, "oh, where that great sandwich place is." Darrell's Special with jalapeño mayo is phenomenal! And the hand-made bread! However, the last couple of times, a few hours after eating one (half; they are huge) I had a reaction typical of the reaction I get from MSG. Skin crawlies, agitation, sleeplessness. I'm thinking there must be some MSG in the ingredients somewhere. read more

Amazing as always. I moved away from LC about 10 years ago and I still make it a point to eat at here almost every time I go home. I always order the Darrell's Special with regular mayo. It's the best. You know it's good when you've got gravy running down your fingers. They open at 11 but I suggest getting there about 10 min before that because it fills up quickly. By 11:15 it's full. This place is so good that you see people walking out with boxes of sandwiches for their offices too. If you've never been there, go!!! read more

Awesome, awesome, awesome! We ate here twice while visiting family. Short menu, but excellent food! If we lived in the area we would be regulars! Get the special, it is fabulous. Sandwiches are great. Just think management and owners would want to do some renovations. That place hadn't changed colors in years. Could use some good cleaning. new carpet, paint and much more. A/C system is not removing humidity. I find the place stuffy and musky smell at lunch time. But the sandwiches make me keep coming back but I think I will get mine to go from now on...clean that place up. read more

My friend and I stopped here on a road trip from Austin to New Orleans. I am from Chicago and I can safely say that the Darrell's special is hands down the most delicious sandwich I've ever had. Most incredible pit stop ever. And the bartender was so excited to have two Yanks in the restaurant that he gave us free shots! read more

Man!! Got pointed to Darrell's by a few of my old high school buddies, was told to try a few of their poboys. Let me tell you something, if you're ever on a cheat day from healthy eating! Must stop here! The surf and turf was mean! Delicious! The shrimp poboy was very tasty, had a hint of spicy ness but was very good. Last but not least, the BBQ was awesome as well. Check this place out if you're down that way, whether it's casino hopping or just in the area. read more

Darrell's has been voted number one poboy's in Lake Charles for the last 20 years in a row now! We make all of our sauces from scratch daily and bake our bread to order! We have seven different poboy's on our menu and have a Full Bar monday Through Friday!

History

Established in 1985.

Darrell's originally opened as a bar for Darrell and his friends to have a place to hang out after a long day of work. One super bowl Darrell's wife Susie made poboys for everyone and they enjoyed them so they decided to start making them full time. 30 years later and Darrell's is still staying strong! Darrell's has been voted number one poboys in town for twenty-one years in a row since the local paper "Lagniappe" started!

Meet the Manager: Tyler B.

My grandparents opened Darrell's and i have been coming here for as long as i can remember. Either busing tables, helping in the kitchen, bar tending, and waiting tables. I have been blessed enough to now be the manager! I was born and raised in Lake Charles and lived in Pennsylvania through high school then decided it was time to get back home and come back to the family business and i'm loving every minute of it! Come on in and say hi and try one of our Darrell's Specials!

Before even ordering, we found ourselves in the frozen section grabbing items to take home--boudin, deer sausage, gumbo... you name it, they had it stocked and ready. It already felt like one of those hidden gems you're glad someone put you on to. Then came the food. My boyfriend has been talking about their fried ribs for over a year, so of course we had to order them. He also got chicken wings, while I kept it light with Cajun boudin balls and green beans. First bite of the boudin ball? I was pleasantly surprised. Flavorful, slightly doughy, but still really good. But let's get to the star of the show... The fried ribs. As someone who's lived in Texas for over 20 years, I had never even heard of fried ribs. But baby... these were it. Perfectly seasoned all the way through, incredibly tender, and honestly--you could barely even tell they were fried. Just juicy, flavorful, and done right. This review is really just to say: fried ribs are real... and In-Laws does them right. If you're ever driving between Texas and Louisiana--somewhere around Lake Charles or Lafayette--do yourself a favor and stop here. 10/10. Highly recommend.

We arrived at 6:45 PM and received our check around 8:55 PM, making the evening longer than we anticipated for a typical date night. Great sandwiches, poor logistics. There is really no method to the way tables are waited or to go orders are processed. Sometimes it will be real quick service and other times you will have to wait for a very long time. In today's restaurant market you have to have efficient to go service. There is no online or app ordering. You have to call or go in to place carry out. Calling in to order is a joke. It takes on average 20 minutes of calling to place an order. They'll take orders at the drive through window, but then say come back in twenty minutes. Why take orders at all that way? read more

I really enjoyed their pulled pork/bbq brisket sandwhich, but the prices aren't exactly college-budget friendly. The amount of food you get for $5 though is pretty good. My waitor tried to charge me for refils, but after a brief conversation with the manager it was fixed. You can easily walk out having spent $10 on one person. I was with my grandmother who can be particular and even she loved it.
