It's a weird sort of family sports bar that's packed to the gills all the time and the staff is apathetic at best. The best place in town for a sub! Honestly! You're probably out of luck calling in, or going in around 10-11 pm for lunch, because they're that good/busy. Their po-boy bread is different than the classic New Orleans-style, but if you aren't expecting it to be New Orleans-style you won't be disappointed. I like the surf and turf or roast beef. Won't find a variety choices here, but I don't believe you will be disappointed in anything here. I had a "Shrimp" with jalapeño mayo, 3 kinds of cheese, and lettuce on a mini French bread type roll, that was obviously baked on-site as it was fresh soft and crispy in all the right places! Absolutely the best poboys other than going straight to New Orleans. I passed this place for 6 months and the parking lot was always full so I finally decided to stop last week. I got the roast beef poboy with provolone cheese and it was amazing. The bread was the best bread I've ever tasted, it was so buttery and toasted to perfection! And the gravy they make taste like someone's grandmother is in the kitchen . The only thing that maybe a problem is the wait time but for the most part they get the food out pretty quick. read more

We visited on Sat afternoon, they were super busy, but we got great friendly service. They don't show it, but they offer a couple of kids items. My very picky 10 year old enjoyed the classic grilled cheese so much, he ordered a second one and ate it all. My husband ordered the large shrimp (it was huge!) and I had the small sausage, both were delicious. I do wish mine had a little less cheese though Thankfully I got the jalapeno mayo on the side. The only reason they won't get a full five stars from me is due to the logistics of their service. They don't really have a to-go system in place and if you are trying to call in during lunch good luck. I think my record was at least 50 calls to try to place an order. And since they are not on the Waitr app, you have to call in to place a take out order. I think they purposefully have it like this to kind of force you to dine in versus taking out. Great sandwiches, but their system is horrible for the amount of traffic they experience. When you are dining in, it's kind of a every person for themselves situation as you can go long amounts of time before a server will come up to you. I know I may wait for a table and my food on a busy day, especially at lunch. The food is worth it every time and they are very consistent. Once Darrell even made me a milkshake when I asked what the "ice cream" in a carton was in his cooler. No table, but staff said we could sit at bar. 4 of us - we asked if we could wait for table and very nice man placed 2 tables together for us in pool area so we would not have to wait! we walked in at 10:40pm when this place advertises that they close at 11pm. we stopped off in lake charles on our way to baton rouge specifically to have a darrell's special. we sat in traffic on the 210 bridge for an hour due to a very bad accident and were so excited that we made it to the restaurant before they closed. closing 20 minutes early is incredibly disappointing and just clearly not right. this is not great customer service. we will not be back to darrell's any time soon. read more

Yes, their sandwiches are good but you're going to get your full day's RDA of salt in only 1/2 of the Darrell's Special and they'll put mayonaise on your BBQ brisquet sandwich (blecch!) unless you say not to. The owner needs to make up his mind regarding Darrell's "No Reservation" Policy. I called to reserve a table for 14 people and was told that the Darrell's restaurant has a no reservation policy. Their policy is strictly a "first come, first serve" basis, so I was very surprised when I arrived to the restaurant and noticed that the wait staff had two long tables reserved for 2 local companies. I asked the staff why the tables were reserved and she replied, "they are not suppose to reserve tables but they did anyway". Needlessly to say, I felt very upset and I thought it was unfair. Either enforce the rules and regulations or don't have any in place. read more

Now, granted, I have not tried their other food, and I do NOT want to convince people not to go there. But the Special is definitely not my cup of tea.
