They serve no pork and if you're looking for a delicious gumbo they definitely have it. Customer service is immaculate, family atmosphere, they definitely know how to treat their customers. So welcoming, fresh and delicious food, clean environment. The chefs Joi and Zion are young and they in there firing up that food and I do mean doing they Thang!!! Always a joy to visit Darrow. Our go to for new orleans cajun faire. Waitstaff are kind, welcoming and courteous! Uncle Darrow was not in the restaurant today. Definitely missed " the welcome family" greeting that everyone receives when Unk is in the house. Mama Darrow checked on each patron after food was served. Very endearing. Restrooms were clean, in good working order and well stocked. Sweet tea was served at optimal temperature and not too sweet. I ordered gumbo and the hubby delved into the catfish and red beans. We ordered delivery, gumbo yaya and the spiced chicken breast. The gumbo came with crab, shrimp and sausage so it looked good to start. Sides were dirty rice, greens and white rice. The meal also came with bread, which was the best part because toasted and buttery. Unfortunately, we felt the portions were small for the price point and the quality of meat in the gumbo was not very good. Visited Darrow for the first time, popped in on a Sunday afternoon. Food: I ordered a catfish po-boy, admittedly I'm not the biggest fan of catfish, however I did bite the bullet and order it. The sandwich was delicious, well balanced with the toppings, perfect amount of everything. There are times when you order po-boys/sandwiches and they fill the sandwiches with so much lettuce and other filler, it feels like you got robbed from the meat option you actually ordered. The pickles on the po-boy really set it off nicely the whole sandwich is extremely balanced texture wise, the bread isn't treated as an afterthought. It's not cold or dry, it's got a nice bite to it, but it's not toasted to the point where it remodels the inside of your mouth. Fish was seasoned well and not over or underdone. They offer "gator sauce", i opted out of that this go around, definitely something to try on the next trip. Space: The restaurant is nestled in a multi-use building, you can't really miss it though. It's does a good job of keeping the New Orleans theme without being tacky or cluttered. Open floor plan, lets you peep into the kitchen and see what's happening. Customer Service: It's not Chick-Fil-a obsessive, lol but I definitely felt like I wasn't invisible. The lady at the counter took my order, offered suggestions and was extremely pleasant throughout (but it didn't feel like an obligatory response). I'm assuming Darrow was the one to bring my food (or at least the owner/manager), asked if I needed anything before leaving the table. There's a sign at the front of the restaurant, read it...and they do a great job at making it feel like a family experience...unless you have a raggedy family, then you may be unfamiliar. I will definitely be making a return visit in the near future. My only critiques (small): For people like me who don't care for Catfish an alternative fish option for the Po-Boys would be greatly appreciated and probably garner worthwhile attention. Let me start iff by saying, this was my first time at Darrrow's New Orleans Grill, but it won't be my last. My uncle,who has been here before, suggested we eat here since we were in the area. He usually takes his food to go, so this was his first time dining in. Although on the phone, when we walked in, we still greeted by, the Hostess, who asked if ot was our first time. I said yes, for me. She offered us some roux to sample. She also explained the menu to us, which great. I got the shrimp supper platter and let.me say from my first bite into rhe bread, I knew this was going to be beyond good. We were checked on throughout our meal by the hostess and by another gentleman. The environment was great, the atmosphere as well. I was told, now that I have eaten here, that I was family. Service - It was a busy Saturday late lunch time with 2 birthday parties and a couple of customers who had a lot of questions. So I'm sure ordering took a little longer than normal. Secure a dining table as soon as you get in if dining inside. Then get in line to place your order. While in line, check out the menu to make your selections, if you haven't already. Once you've ordered, the meal comes out pretty quickly and you can see your food being prepared. He was very friendly, described the menu, answered our questions, was very attentive, and even offered to take our small group picture. Love the laid back vibe in the restaurant, nice ambiance and loved the music (R&B oldies but goodies). My favorite food items were the red beans and rice and the cornbread. The food here is really good and it's a nice place however the service is a little rocky. Walking in, the sign is misleading I believe due Covid. It says grab a menu and have a seat. But, there are no menus and no one is walking around to take your order. So we just followed the line and placed our order at the front. While waiting you can tell that they are very understaffed. We were empathetic because of results of Covid so, we patiently waited. But, I decided to order a fountain drink and I walked over to the fountain machine. While I was trying to use the fountain machine one of the workers told me it wasn't working, rather than letting me know ahead of time that it wasn't work. But, I let it slide because things happen. We had to wait for the food for a long time but, the shrimp po boys were really good! I have to say the food was the best part of the experience. It was delicious and it was well seasoned. One of the servers seemed a little irritated that my friend had to remind him more than once about her drink that she initially ordered in the beginning. We were on our way home from Ventura back to Orange County and I woke up from a nap and an appetite. I opened up Yelp and Darrow's showed up locally. Funny enough, it was a place I had been wanting to try. We were immediately greeted by gumbo samples and the owner who is a sweetheart and does not want anyone treated as customers, but as family and that is exactly how we we felt being there. The restaurant is tastefully decorated with a mural paying homage to New Orleans. The gumbo is to die for- what I loved most is there is no pork used in it so it doesn't have leave a greasy residue in your mouth or insides. The po boy I had was delicious and perfectly dressed. We have since returned with our children for brunch and while the owner was not there, it was still great service. The shrimp and grits and chicken and waffles are top notch. And their hurricane- OMG soooo good and they don't use any red dye in it, just juices. Another plus is they serve Abita beer- my favorite!! read more

I've been eating at Uncle Darrow's since they were in Marina Del Rey. All of the food is great. The owners are all great people and the service is a reflection of that; it's hard to find great customer service in the food industry sometimes but this place doesn't have that issue. Don't be surprised if one of the owner's visits your table to ask how your visit is before you finish eating. My favorite Po' Boy is the ZEEK. Fried catfish & shrimp on a French roll WITH THE TATER SALAD ON THE BREAD TOO! BOMB! Other go to items are the bean-balaya and of course the gumbo. Pre-pandemic, it was 5 stars. Now (due to understaffing) the main reason I used to come here (anytime I visited my parents) was for sitting at the bartop having a couple of drinks. However, now if you come and Marcel isn't working (which is A LOT) you can forget about having an amazing drink other than the pre-batched Hurricane and/or rum punch. The 3 stars is because the service (other than the bar area) is absolutely incredible. In lieu of treating you like a regular, they treat you like family. I love that. Also, tbh there aren't a lot of great dining options in Carson. If you come here and are looking for good cocktails I'd suggest calling first to see if Marcel is working. It was exceptionally satisfying. I went there with my son and there was ample parking in the parking structure by the restaurant. We were greeted like family and were given samples of their gumbo and Jambalaya but ended up ordering the soft shell crab po'boy and the shrimp with grits. Also a side of the jambalaya. My sone had a hurricane and it was delicious. Service was A+, they occasionally stopped by to ask if we needed anything else and asking for feedback on the food.
