Darrow greeted us at the cashier and explains the menu. The menu has a little of everything you're looking for. We had the big easy supper (4 fried shrimp, 4 fried oysters, 4 pieces of fried catfish you can have grilled) but it's Fat Tuesday! You also get 2 sides. I came with my coworkers to try something different. I found this place on Yelp as a recommendation for lunch. The atmosphere is very inviting and remarkable hospitality. But we were there for the food! Simply put - AMAZING! The sign on the wall says it best - it's all about the flavor. Two of my coworkers had visited New Orleans last year and they were taken back. Literally - they said the taste reminded them of the food they had in New Orleans. We got a sample set of popular sides. Food came out quickly. The sauces added a lil extra kick. My hubby and I were driving through LA to Huntington Beach. Decided to stop off for a bite to eat and this place came up on Yelp. EXCELLENT food decent prices and very nice people. Hubby had the Catfish Po boy and I had the shrimp Po Boy. I loved it. They are vegetarian friendly and the place is very clean. If we lived here this would be a regular place for us. My family and I were looking for fried fish on a Sunday and most fish markets are closed on Sundays so I was happy to find this local gem, being a new resident to Carson. We ordered the Catfish Supper Fried which came with two sides and we picked collard greens and red bean &rice, then the Combo Supper Fried which was Catfish and shrimp with collards and Tater salad, and my sister got the original Gumbo with a side of split wings fried hard. I placed the order over the phone and went to pick it up 30mins later. When I arrived everyone was so nice and helpful! The owner even gave me a free sample of the gumbo because I was a new customer, and can I tell you its some of the best gumbo ive ever had! The food was good, I ordered the shrimp dinner, the portion I had could have been bigger, I had 5 medium shrimp, personally I would call them small shrimp, with fries and greens. The fries were on point with great spicy seasoning that I thought the shrimp should have had. For what I paid it should have come with 10 shrimp. "Welcome home, you're family now" were some of the first words out of Darrow's mouth. This cute little place wasn't on our radar but after a Yelp search for gumbo I'm glad Darrow's popped up. We made the 20 minute drive from Redondo Beach and we were glad we did. A lovely lady behind the counter asked if we were return customers and we explained it was our first time...she hooked us up with some terrific samples that sealed the deal and basically we ordered everything. Gumbo, catfish, shrimp, oysters, beans and rice, potato salad, daiquiris, rum punch...and even peach cobbler and banana pudding. Service was next to perfect, friendly, helpful and with a smile...she even told us about the shipments from New Orleans, roux, sausage, the peach cobbler dough...how authentic is that? I noticed the folks behind the counters, preparing food and mixing drinks seemed to be masters at their craft and enjoyed what they were doing. It was evident they cared enough to make sure the food arrived looking appetizing and not thrown together. And man oh man the food was simply delicious. I think I finished my gumbo in minutes flat but I did notice it arrived piping hot, something a lot of places fail to deliver...luke warm soup fries my eggs, this was stove hot delicious. As was all the fish and accompaniments. Best of all is the option to order your fish grilled instead of fried, spiced mildly or kicked up to satisfy those with asbestos mouths. Kidding aside, the food was nicely spiced...we wouldn't change a thing. Drinks were hearty, I was looped after 1 daiquiri. The restaurant decor is fun, New Orleans appointed with a beautifully painted mural that celebrates NOLA. We were planning our return when Darrow introduced himself, welcomed us home and asked about the service. Can't wait to try the Po'boys and beignets! From the first greeting to the final Goodbye the experience is old southern hospitality and good wholesome food. My go to are the wings with cajun fries or red beans and rice along side a delicious hurricane from the bar. I can't say enough good thingd about the service, fried wings, southern greens or the drinks. It's a fun place to watch a sporting event. intimate, full of fun, but not to loud.
