Sammie took my order, but it would have been much better if she had engaged more with the customers and made us feel welcome. Her facial expression and overall attitude didn't really give the impression that she was happy to provide service. The food also took quite a long time to arrive. I waited about 20 minutes for my coffee and around 30 minutes for all of the food after I finished placing my order. My friend and I have been to this restaurant before, but this visit was more disappointing than our previous experiences. Late Saturday morning, my beautiful wife surprised me with brunch at our new favorite breakfast spot. The line was long, but it moved efficiently to the cashier, and like always, the food was great. The only issue I had was the group of ladies arguing with the supervisor about their seating arrangement. From what I witnessed, the manager remained calm, respectful, and professional toward the group. So I'm not sure why they decided to grace the outdoor seating area with an encore performance of "What I would have done if I were the manager" for the next 20 minutes. I understand that the table felt wronged, and everyone has the right to voice their concerns. But at some point, the nonstop complaining only disrupted the experience of the other customers trying to enjoy their Saturday brunch. As for us, we had another great experience. It was my first time coming to Zuzu's Petals and I definitely have a lot of thoughts! First, the ambiance and aesthetics are very cute. Everything feels clean, classy and thoughtfully put together. When you first arrive, seeing the line out the door can be a little intimidating. Usually at places like this, I feel like I have to fight for my life to find a table, but thankfully that wasn't the case here. The staff was very kind and asks how many are in your party and helps you get a table, which made everything much less stressful. They also give you menus while you wait so you can decide what you want ahead of time. We arrived at 10:30am and our wait was about 30 minutes so by the time we were able to order at 11am, the lunch menu was also available. I ordered the tater tots, Cinnagave Shaken Espresso, Dutch Baby Pancake and country sourdough toast with jam. With tax and tip, my total came out to around $40. It's definitely pricier than what I normally pay for breakfast. Most entrées range from $17-$34 and coffees are around $5-$10, so you can easily spend $30+ for one person. In these hard times, that's not exactly ideal for me. I also wanted to try a pastry to get the full experience, but when I found out the small blackberry danish was $7, I decided to pass. I just couldn't justify getting that close to $50 for breakfast for one person. Now for the food! The country sourdough toast with jam was actually my favorite item. The homemade sourdough was incredible and honestly deserves its roses. It sounds like such a simple thing, but it was so well done and easily the standout for me. Visually, the Dutch Baby Pancake was beautiful and definitely impressive when it came out. I've always wanted to try one, so I was excited! I will say, I've read everywhere that Dutch babies are supposed to have more of a custardy center and even the photos I've seen look that way. Mine didn't really have that texture at all and tasted more like a crepe. Maybe it was a little overcooked? It wasn't bad, just not quite what I expected. Still delicious! Unfortunately, the tater tots were the biggest disappointment. They weren't crispy, didn't taste seasoned and sort of fell apart until they became one big potato mess. My cousins and I ended up not finishing them. One of my cousins ordered the summer peach and corn salad, which she liked! Just a heads-up that it's only available after 11 a.m. My other cousin got the skillet, she mentioned feeling a little disappointed since it tasted a little dry and didn't finish her plate. However they both ordered the Curious George drink and LOVED it! The Cinnagave Shaken Espresso was also fantastic. Coffee is definitely something they do very well here and I can see myself getting again. Overall, the aesthetics are adorable and I could see this being a great date spot. The coffee was fantastic, the sourdough was amazing, but the rest of the food was just okay for us. That was a little disappointing because everything sounds SO good on paper. Maybe we just caught them on an off day. The prices are probably the biggest thing holding me back from coming back regularly. Spending $30-$40+ per person for breakfast isn't really in my budget right now, but if this is within your price range, you may have a completely different experience. When I review a place, I try to take the overall experience, personal taste and effort into account. For now, I'm leaving Zuzu's Petals at 4 stars because the effort is definitely there, and what isn't my cup of tea may be someone else's liquid gold. I absolutely love this place! I have never had bacon melt in my mouth before. I truly can't stop raving and enjoy every time I visit. Although I get annoyed at ordering at the front, I will say they try and speed the process up as much as possible. I've tried quite a few dishes on the menu and still have a few left to experience, but my go to is always something with bacon. The potatoes are cooked perfectly, along with the eggs, and steak (I believe they are cooking sous vide so they turns out perfectly every time) They have outside patio section that is shaded, along with little fans to help in case flies get in the way. This is one of the best brunch places I've ever tried! There was only street parking from what I could tell, but we didn't have to walk too far. My friend and I ordered up front and got to pick our own table. Most of it is self-serve aside from the food, so there was a water station and area to grab extra napkins and utensils as needed. We visited on Saturday and had a great meal and excellent service. This was our second time here, and we would absolutely recommend this place to anyone looking for a great brunch. We were also especially impressed by how management handled a difficult situation unfolding at the table in front of us. A group of women were unhappy that they had not been seated sooner and proceeded to complain throughout nearly their entire meal about just about every aspect of their experience. At one point, it appeared they were also trying to have their food and drinks comped. Unfortunately, the constant complaining almost ruined our own breakfast, since we were seated close enough to hear the entire exchange. We came out to enjoy a pleasant brunch, so it was disappointing to watch the situation continue for so long. That said, the manager deserves a lot of credit. He handled the situation with an incredible amount of grace, patience, and professionalism. Couldn't check into our hotel earlier so decided to check out Zuzu per our host suggestion. Walk was really short from city center hotel, I probably would say 5 minutes from there. Once we got there, we immediately were seated. You just have to come back to order your food. I got the skillet with strawberry pistachio matcha. I got scared before it arrived because someone else had matcha and said they weren't impressed. Once I got mine though, I was impressed. I loved it. My skillet was really good. It got me fulll and I was able to have leftovers. My boyfriend order the burrito and for the price, there was no sides which was a little disappointing but he enjoyed it. Came across this place randomly driving around Long Beach and it was worth the stop. It was after noon so I ordered the smashed burger with tots. They offer patio seating or outside parklet seating. We got the steak, eggs scrambled with cheese and potatoes and although sounding quite simple and straight forward every component of this dish was a MASTERCLASS in culinary EXCELLENCE. Even down to the course possibly Maldon salt they sprinkled on the potatoes was CHEFS KISS! The pancakes and bacon that I sampled were spectacular as well. One other drawback was the $9 side of bacon which came in 3 mini pieces or thirds of maybe one long strip. OVERALL we were so impressed by this breakfast that we came back the next day to sample some more but this is where things kinda went SOUTH! The misses ordered Chicken and Waffles and I wanted to steer clear of that because that a dish you can get anywhere. What intrigued me was the BREAKFAST BURRITO because LA folks are ALWAYS ranting and raving about breakfast burrito so I wanted to give it a try. I read the description and saw they used tater tots inside. Now if they were HOUSEMADE tots then sure put it in my burrito but if they were from Krogers, Ralphs, Save A Lot or Aldis then it would be a HARD PASS. I decided to try to reinvent the wheel and asked if I could have the potatoes we adored from their steak and eggs dish from our fist visit into the burrito and they said yes and this is where things went awry. Upon first observation the burrito looked great but upon biting into it there was BARELY, any eggs, meat, or cheese, all I could taste was POTATOES and TORTILLA. This was the most potato forward carb loaded burrito I ever had in my life to the point it was overwhelming and I decided to pick through it and leave all those potatoes and tortilla behind. I believe, but could be wrong but the potatoes from the awesome steak and eggs dish may have been PAR BOILED, smashed, fried, then sprinkled with salt which makes them awesome. In my burrito tho, it tasted like they just boiled them and threw them in the burrito without taking the further steps to make em more tastier before wrapping the burrito. My wife suggested I should've just ordered the burrito AS IS with the tots and it probably would've been awesome. My request for the steak and eggs version of potatoes in my burrito probably did make the burrito worse and I don't blame the cooks, chef, or the restaurant but it was more of MY BAD. I sampled the misses Chicken and Waffles and just like the steak and eggs and pancakes and bacon we had the day prior the dish was SUPERB as well! I'm not really a breakfast person, but this place definitely converted me because the food and flavor combos were so well done! Zuzu's is one of my favorite places in Long Beach. Their matcha is so good and the breakfast burrito with soyrizo is my go too! My partner got the chicken and waffles and the flavors were unique and mouth watering. The customer service is excellent and the vibes are filled with love and comfort. Can't speak highly enough about this place. The vibe for starters is so sweet! Bright, airy, clean and the music they play is literally perfect. Oldies but goodies is so fun and relaxing at the same time. The staff were very friendly and efficient. Now the coffee my goodness the coffee was stellar! The banana latte with coconut foam was out of this world not too sweet, creamy, and so smooth. Also, the food was out of this world bursting with flavor no salt, pepper or hot sauce needed! I got the skillet and 100% would get it again. It's a huge portion. My husband got the breakfast sandwich and it was also bursting with flavor. Can't recommend this place enough. Finally tried Zuzu's Petals as it was recommended to me by a fellow Yelp Elite friend who said this was their favorite brunch spot in Long Beach - they said the line was worth it, and it so was! It honestly went pretty quickly and they had a good system for ordering and getting people seated. Although the space isn't the biggest, the ambiance was very cozy and intimate and the decorations were cute. The food was PERFECT, no notes! I wish I had taken a picture of the menu so I could remember everything we ordered. I ordered the lobster omelette with a whipped Boursin cheese spread yum! My fiance got the fried chicken n waffles and I think I actually liked his dish better than mine overall but both were so good. I LOVED my drink, the Blush & Bloom - strawberry compote was perfect an the matcha was strong! Also pls order the crispy smashed potatoes - I devoured these. Had the pleasure of trying Zuzu's Petals for the first time this week and it did NOT disappoint. I mean wow--I see why it's a local favorite! Sure, the line/wait to order and be seated was long at 10:30am the week after Christmas, but it was more than made up for by the stellar service and delicious food. It's clear by the service, ambiance, and menu that a lot of care and work are put into the place by the owners and staff. I ordered the brioche French toast, Jam n' Pear Matcha, and the table shared the Crispy Smashed Potatoes. Seriously, all three were unbelievably tasty AND presented so appealingly. I'm so excited to come back--and I'll be raving about that pear matcha drink for a while! PS. They serve Nonna Mercato pastries... YUM! read more
