Stopped here completely by accident. Lunch was so reasonable and with such generous portions that I understand why Daruma is so popular locally. But I personally prefer Japanese restaurants where the food is really Japanese, not fusion at all. It has been my experience that mixing Chinese food with Japanese doesn't do justice to either cuisine. I don't know where the chef was trained but the wait staff were all Chinese. We started with grilled eggplant with miso and sesame which was by far, the best I have ever eaten, although we make and eat this at home. They can give me lessons in what they are doing that I do not. The yellowtail rolls were ok but not exceptional. The miso soup was disappointing, slightly smoky for some strange reason. This lunch special came with a spring roll, also disappointing. The service was friendly and prompt, for the amount of food, lunch was very inexpensive. Everything served is delicious, fresh and often creative. In the current Englewood merchant community that exists today, with other favorite restaurants getting pummeled and forced to close (ie' Baumgart's, Bennies, Blue Moon), important to appreciate and support a gem like Daruma IMO. read more

I have never been to a place where they had the authentic Japanese style of seating. You can sit with your shoes off and on the floor with the table in front of you. Very cool but I kept my shoes on this time. We started with the tuna spring rolls and it was one of the more interesting things I have had. It was a tempura battered fried spring roll with tuna inside. It came with a sweet and sour type sauce. Not bad but kind of funky since the tuna was slightly overcooked. It also wasn't much of a spring roll which I think of as being light. The sushi was good and they have a bunch of specialty rolls. The prices are fair but no lunch specials which surprised me. They also had a private parking lot which always makes life easier. The place was cool but nothing draws me back to it. read more

My favorite Japanese place in my neighborhood! The owner is so friendly and really goes up and beyond to build a relationship with her regulars. A bit of caution here because they do so well the dining room gets loud during most dinners especially on the weekends. If you're on a date you can ask for the tables by the window which is separated from the hustle and bustle. They also have a private room in the back for small parties. The food is great. They also get very creative with their rolls. My man and I love to share the sushi for 2 which comes with 9 pieces of sushi, 1 spicy tuna roll, 1 California roll, and 2 special rolls of your choice (I love the crispy jalepeno and the daruma). Everything is so fresh and bursting with flavor. Don't forget to bring the wine and get lost in your conversation and food. The entrees I have tried (shrimp tempura and sukiyaki) are also very good and lots of it. They have their own parking lot which they share with the animal hospital. I always meant to check this place out. I used to go to Akai because friends worked there and there seemed to be a rivalry bc they're so close. Interior is nice. The floor seating is cute and something you don't see often. Good place for a date. It's not the best sushi I would say but it wasn't bad either. We got some sort of combo for two which had sushi, sashimi and some rolls. I had two pieces of uni. It was ok, nothing memorable. It was a cute spot for a date with the floor seating but I don't think I'll be back for the food. I'm too picky of a sushi eater. read more

Haven't been there for a few years. I remember the food being pretty good and a nice calm ambiance. We met friends there for a change from our usual sushi place. It was disappointing. The dining room was really brightly lit, like they we're getting ready to close. There were partitions between tables and they were spaced far apart so we felt comfortable eating inside. The service was fine, the appetizers were good. The Sushi just boring and mediocre. Not enough variety of fish, the special rolls were all very similar I had a roll that was supposed to be spicy. It wasn't . The rice was hard. At the end of our meal, the staff started using a cleaner that was so strong the whole dining smelled like it. There were still customers eating. I will not go back. came here for lunch on a weekend. it's near the shoprite in englewood. although they don't have any lunch specials, it has a nice relaxed seating area, relatively simple menu, and is very clean, which speaks to their attention to detail. I ordered a tempura udon noodle soup and they actually seperated the tempura from the soup, which avoids the tempura from getting soggy. they have some unique sushi rolls but I can't speak to them. check them out. read more

Just finished dinning at this place and cannot wait to write something. Every town has a pian lao wai Japanese setup. This is the one in Englewood. This is absolutely nothing of an authentic Japanese restaurant. Calling a bunch of raw food wrapped in rice a maki does not make this place authentic. Ok. Service. Well there is none. Our server has been running. But we don't feel being taken care of. But he didn't make serious mistakes either. So it's almost nonexistent. Food. Those are some of the most ugly looking makies I have ever had. They look like made with play doh by a 3yo kid. The mango slices which are supposed to be part of the roll just are left randomly around the roll like it's just suffered from a magnitude 8 earthquake. Check out my photos you will know I'm not lying. The toasted eel is not toasty, not even lukewarm. For the price of $4/piece, I expect some consistency of the serving size. One of the 3 pcs I order is just as large as the rest two combined. How do I not feel that I got ripped off on the other two? Again, check the photo. The taste of soft shell crab appetizer is ok. But the rest of the dinner just leave us more unsatisfied then before stepping in. Bottom line... There is no bottom line. read more

One of those last minute decisions on what to eat. Decided to stop in for some sushi - ordered the Rising Star, Lobster Rolls and California Rolls, sad to say, it was nothing special. The Rising Star consisted of Salmon and Tuna, which was bluh; the lobster rolls tasted like imitation lobster meat -hard, and tasteless, which probably explains why they added mango to it. The safest rolls on the plate were the California. Not much more to elaborate on food wise. They do offer free parking in their private lot, and the service was average. We were hungry after a long day and went on a rampage when ordering. We ordered the following: 1. Citrus Ponzu Sashimi Salad 2. Red Snapper Sushi 3. Salmon Sushi 4. Toro Sushi 4. Dream[s] Come True Roll 5. Spicy Tuna Roll 6. Philadelphia Roll Let me just say that the pieces of sushi here are soooo small [do the extra o's express how small it was?]. They are about 3/4 of the size of an average sushi piece. Everything ordered was decent tasting aside from the size or portion give. The Dream[s] Come True Roll was actually really good - It was tangy and packed good flavor, it's just a shame that it was a miniature sized roll. The citrus ponzu sashimi salad was pretty good as well. All the other rolls and sushi pieces are decent. I can see why people of New Jersey would love this place but I honestly felt like I didn't get what I paid for. I think I paid ~$80 for the two of us and left completely hungry. This is legit the best sushi in Bergen county and maybe even all of New Jersey. I frequent other sushi spots a lot and none of them compare to the freshness and creativity of Daruma's sushi. But why stop at the sushi? Have some seafood soup, tempura, and shishito peppers while you're at it - all of it will leave your palate satisfied. Don't forget to end your meal with a delicious tempura green tea ice cream. I'll just leave it at that, but honestly the sushi here is unreal and would not consider any other spot in Bergen county. The sushi rolls here are beautiful and i love that you can sit on the floor. Its like a dream. The hibachi is great and the workers are relatively nice. There are a good amount of Japanese restaurants within a two block span of here, so you know it has some rivalry and being that it can go against such high competition, you know its good. I love this place. We go to Daruma about once/week. We love the staff, Janice, Ann, Tony, Linda and Stella... there's also a new Chinese waiter, very nice, but I'm blanking on her name :-( We usually sit in these tables "Noren" tables... you have to take off your shoes, go up three stairs, sit and your feet go into this "hole" under the table. Kind of fun. We're still young-ish so we can do it. I guess after 60 years old or so, we will be in the regular tables. Anyways, the food is fantastic always and the service is very friendly, so much so, that my husband leaves a bottle of Sake there for every time we go (of course he replenishes it after 3 dinners or so). All in all, to me, the best sushi around here. We love it! Totally recommend it. There's parking right next to the restaurant, so no worries about the parking. I can't believe I've lived 10 minutes from Daruma my whole life and have never gone until yesterday. I order sushi from Tani all the time but I might have to start ordering sushi from Daruma too. Everything was so good. We ordered a ridiculous amount of items to split and there wasn't a single one that we didn't like. Our group tried the scallops appetizer, the Daruma tartare, the pork gyoza and the shrimp shumai, the sea bass, and the chicken lettuce wraps to start. Everything was delicious. We even ordered a second order of pork gyoza because everyone liked them so much. The portions are on the smaller side, but we were happy about that because it meant we could try more things. The only appetizer that I wouldn't order again was the Daruma Tartare. It was good but not amazing--a little bland, I thought. Then, we split 6 sushi rolls and those were also so good. My favorite was the jalapeño yellowtail roll, but the sunrise was also great. None of the sushi disappointed. The service at Daruma was also very prompt and our waitress came by to see if we needed anything often. Overall I really have no complaints. I will definitely be coming here again. read more

The special rolls have mostly spicy something or another mixed in. Not many high-end quality rolls with just chunks of fish. We ordered about 3 special rolls and the mayo in the spicy mixture was getting too much. Perhaps we didn't order the right things, but majority of the special rolls are similar.
