What a pleasant surprise! I've driven by PJ Sushi, located on Lemoine Ave, too many times to count. The storefront is pretty unassuming and not very appealing, which explains why I've driven by so many times without it catching my eye. I found them on Yelp while looking for a new sushi spot to try. What drew me in was their low prices. They have lunch specials priced between $7-$11! I was initially hesitant because I didn't want to risk the possibility of eating low quality RAW SEAFOOD.... BUT the positive reviews steered me in the right direction! I called to place my order and it was ready within 10-15 minutes. You can park in front of the restaurant (metered), but there's also plenty of free side street parking and a small lot in the back. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The interior is a lot more spacious and modern than I thought. There's a good amount of seating if you want to dine in.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The owners are husband and wife - both very friendly. They operate cafeteria style - you order at the front counter and seat yourself. No waiter/table service. I ordered: *Lunch Special Spicy Tuna Combo ($11) - Includes 8 pieces of spicy tuna roll, 4 pieces of salmon sushi, & miso soup. WOW!!! The rolls were ginormous. They gave me a ton of fish! The tuna and salmon were fresh in taste and texture. The miso soup broth was warm and savory. *Eel Roll ($8 for 8 pieces) - This is the most generous portion of eel I've ever had in a sushi roll! And it tasted amazing! Tender, flaky, slightly charred, rich, and sweet. The unagi sauce was the perfect complement. *Seaweed Salad $5 - Includes rehydrated dried seaweed, rice vinegar, soy sauce, toasted sesame oil, sugar, grated ginger, and toasted sesame seeds. This salad was so refreshing! The dressing had the right balance of salty and tangy flavors. My only complaint about the rolls was the rice. They used a little too much. It was also mushy and lacked seasoning. Other than that, my belly was very satisfied with the meal. It's not the most impressive or freshest sushi I've ever had... but you get the best value here. PJ Sushi = VALUE. You get pretty good sushi for a great price AND the service is quick and friendly. My family (of 6) LOVES this place and we order here at least once or twice a month. We have not been disappointed which is why I am giving a rating of 5 stars. Our favorite rolls are the david special, shrimp tempura, salmon avocado, and dragon roll. Also really love their sashimi. A few things to note: - The sushi is not super high quality (they're pretty big and fall apart sometimes) but it is REALLY REALLY good for what you're paying. Good CASUAL sushi. Lunch combos are a deal. Basic nigiri,, sashimi, and rolls. Sushi rice was surprisingly acceptable. Everything was fresh and tasted good. Small dining area and canned/bottled drinks in the fridge. Otherwise grab a slurpee from 7-11 next door. This is one of those "don't judge a book by its cover", because it's a hidden gem! The storefront is as boring as a doorknob. In fact, the store will appear closed, but it is fully functional and open. Indoor dining is currently closed, so only take-out orders at this time. The menu stands out for sure, and will make you come back again to try all of it. They have a wide variety of specialty rolls and sets that makes your appetite hungrier than it is. Their sushi is always super fresh and amazing, especially surprising for a mom and pop shop and considering their unbeatable prices (even cheaper than Costco sushi). I couldn't find them on any apps (which is understandable, especially right now since I've been reading that these apps take a huge chunk of the profits). But it's also kind of annoying because it means 1. I have to call to place an order, and talk to people (but I guess at this point, human interaction is nice) 2. Hand-off of a credit card to pay (BTW, they don't accept Amex) 3. Because of said hand-off of credit card, you have to touch one of the germ pens to sign the receipt. I did think of bringing my own pen, but didn't have that thought until mid-drive, and there were no pens in the car. But other than that, I must say - this is one of the better fushi (fake sushi) places I've tried. The prices are incredible, and the portions are ginormous. I feel like a roll here is double the size of other comparable places. There is a lot of rice in the rolls, but it matches the amount of fish inside. They don't skimp on it here. We had the PJ special roll (tuna, salmon, and spicy shrimp), the Tuna Set (tuna roll + 4 pcs of tuna), and the Crunchy Spicy Salmon Combo (1 Crunchy Spicy Salmon roll +3 pcs of salmon). There is a lot going on in the PJ roll but if you're just looking for a bunch of raw fish, then this is the roll. I didn't really taste any spice from the shrimp. The tuna and salmon set were great as well. As I mentioned - huge pieces of fish. Love that. I think PJ Sushi is the best quality/quantity for its price. As if they prices weren't cheap enough, they offer sushi platters for $50 and they even have lunch specials (only until 3 though, so we just missed it). Can't wait to come back! I went to PJ Sushi for lunch and ordered the sushi platter with 2 California rolls, 2 shrimp tempura rolls, 2 eel rolls, 1 dragon roll, and 1 spicy tuna roll (around 60 pieces). The sushi was pretty good quality. The rice around the rolls was not the most stable, but the ingredients were tasty. There was a nice variety as well. The eel and dragon rolls were my favorites. For $56, this was a decent deal, as it fed 4 people. As for the interior design, PJ Sushi could definitely benefit from a renovation or spruce-up. Half of the light bulbs inside were out and there wasn't much in terms of interior decor. It's not the nicest looking restaurant from the outside or inside, but the food makes up for it. The service speed is pretty quick. Overall, PJ Sushi has good sushi at affordable prices, especially if you are coming with a group of around 4 people and order one of the platters. This hole-in-the-wall shop is sooo under appreciated. They have fairly decent quality fish and are VERY GENEROUS with their portions and fish to rice ratio. Update 2/24/2020 Still amazing! The fish is still fresh and plentiful. The inside seating area has been updated to add a few more tables, and received new flooring and walls for a much more sophisticated look. The staff were even so kind as to carry my food out to my car for me, since I had a baby along. I look forward to every visit here! This is the best quality sushi I've found for the price since moving here! You really get a lot of fish for your money, as compared to other places that would charge more for a roll that has less. Everything is extremely fresh and has great taste. We also got our food faster than anywhere before, so it's definitely a place you can just stop to order and be out quickly. We stayed to eat our sushi there. There's six tables inside that seat four each, and a number of soda, water, tea, and Snapple options for drinks. The seating area and bathroom are a bit dingy, but I'm ok with that as long as the quality of the food is top-notch. This will likely be our new go-to sushi spot. First time in this place, just because of the reviews, what a disappointment! There was a dead fly on our food! I called the place and spoke to a very rude and unprofessional lady that didn't have common sense. Let her know what I found and she asked me to send her a picture, which I sent it to her. She called back and told me if I don't like her food, to go back and return it. I thought she was joking, I told her that it was a waste of my time and money to go back for $24. She never apologize once, she just kept saying "if you don't like my food bring back". Who in the world ask the customer to bring back the food? Unless you want to serve it to someone else. I wanted to give more stars for some reasons I couldn't. First, the good part .. I ordered a platter and the portion of sushi you get is great and the service is great very nice people. All of the sushi was fresh but however the preparation was my issue. One piece of salmon sushi had a bone in it and another piece had a sliver of silver skin made both inedible which in turn made it hard to eat the salmon options any further. The special rolls were tasty but really not tight enough and would fall apart when grabbing. This all being said we ate about 1/2 the platter and gave up. I will probably not get another platter for those reasons but they have a great lunch special that is a great value always read more

Yeah, I've hit up other joints and this place is STILL my favorite sushi place and I had to change my review from 4 stars to 5. The decor isn't "fancy" but who cares, for the price, it's well worth it. Especially when the fish is that fresh. The salmon always tastes like I went into the water and am chewing on the fish right out of the water a la Gollum style. The owners are still amazingly friendly and always recognize me when I come in. I love them. They're always all smiles. I actually wish they were open Sundays because now I'm not close enough to go as often as I used to (which was 1-2 times a week, one week I think I hit them up 4-5 times - I will die of mercury poisoning but it will be well worth it!!!).
