What a great experience with Dashi! I got some takeout and had heard good things about this spot. Everything was fresh & flavorful. The rice ratio was perfect and rice cooked to perfection! When I walked in at opening, there wasn't anyone there yet and all of the staff greeted me so nicely. It's a really pleasant environment inside with good natural light & a cool, modern aesthetic. I'll definitely return to eat at the restaurant next time.

Came here on a Friday evening and got seated outside. We ordered chicken karage and Mac n cheese as they both tasted pretty good. We had 3 sushi rolls that filled us up. We really loved the spicy Mr.Miyagi roll! Small indoor dining room so I wouldn't recommend bringing a large group since the space is small but overall a great place to get sushi for date night.

The rolls are so dang tasty and unique! The quality of the fish is super high quality as well. The salmon was delicious and fatty and the sea bream was soooo good. Very unique rolls! Just wish they could make it a bit faster. There were only 2 tables in the restaurant with people and it took a while to get our food, wonder how long it takes when the restaurant is packed. The service is amazing tho shoutout to the servers! We ordered the salmon crispy rice, the Miso Tai roll, and the Oyabun roll. My favorites were the two rolls. The best part about the miso tai was the sea bream and the lemon sauce. It was a bit spicy from the spicy tuna. The Oyabun roll was the best I loved every part about it especially the torched salmon.

We got 2 sushi rolls and a gyoza order. My daughter rated it 4/5. The jalapeño roll has fresh jalapeños so it is spicy but it was pretty good. Service was quick and the bathrooms were clean. It's a nice location but on the smaller comfort side. So don't expect to bring a bring crew with you.

My husband and I came by on a Sunday evening. Place was busy but we were seated in about 10 mins. Sushi was so good! Very fresh and the flavors of the rolls really compliment each other. Service was really good too and the place is small but plenty of seating. Would definitely come back for sushi. We had their most popular: salmon crispy rice, point break which was very flavorful!

I was super stoked to dine at DASHI, as I've heard only great things about them from my friends. Surprisingly the bar was comfortable and spacious for all of our items. I wanted to try various items, which will have to be divided into different visits, because I really enjoyed everything! Salmon Crispy Rice (4/5): Perfect appetizer of chopped salmon piled on top of crispy rice patties and topped with tobiko and aioli. Monkfish (4/5): Their serving size is very generous, and the texture of monkfish was creamy. This was one of their specials! Scallop Nigiri (5/5): The scallops were so soft and melts in your mouth! Sashimi Flight (5/5): Every single slice of fish was extremely buttery, and I received Salmon, Tuna, and two other white fish. Hillcrest Roll (4/5): A protein style roll, with a variety of fish and wrapped neatly in cucumber and dressed in ponzu. So delicious! I am SO looking forward to revisiting DASHI! Their menu is unique, plus their quality of seafood is more than your casual sushi restaurant. The plating was thoughtful, the food presentation looks neat, and most importantly, everything was delicious!

Finding good sushi in San Diego can feel like a gamble... this place was a very welcome surprise. Everything we ordered was fresh, well-balanced, and actually thoughtfully put together, flavors that that worked. The Calamari was light and crispy (not greasy), and that dipping sauce was one of those "don't waste a drop" situations. The sushi itself hit that perfect middle ground between creative and classic... nothing gimmicky, just really solid execution. Atmosphere was clean, relaxed, and easy to settle into without feeling rushed. Service was friendly and attentive. Adding it to the regular rotation!

We finally made it to this new sushi spot everyone is talking about. I love that this new place changed the vibe of the corner of 5th and university. We came on a Saturday, very busy and waited 30min for a table (worth the wait ). We sat at the bar and we shared an omakase plate and Karagi chicken. The sushi was fresh, melt in your mouth! And they served it with real wasabi. The chef gave us a sample of a fish to try, it was so good! Ambiance: 5* Food: 5* Location: 5* Prices: very reasonable Definitely one of my favorite sushi spots in SD.

Come here!!! Everyone come one come all to one of the best sushi restaurants in hillcrest!! I have been driving past this place since August, saying I wanted to go and omg omg I am so glad I did. This is gonna be my new local spot! The miso mac and cheese is amazing and could've been a meal! I kinda wish I hadnt ordered a full meal outside of the mac and cheese. I got two rolls based on our amazing waitress's recommendation- the lemon glow and the oyabun! The lemon was my favorite. So flavorful My two companions got sashimi and nigiri - cut to perfection and were delicious! We walked in at 5:30 to a semi empty restaurant, but by the time we left every table inside and out and the sushi bar were packed. It was so good. I can't wait to come again.

Had a perfect fish to rice ratio with very high quality sushi rice. Both rolls were simple and fresh without overpowering flavors of sauce or fishiness. We were seated by the bars which had very comfortable seats. The service unfortunately was lacking, especially from the hostess today. It wasn't crazy busy as we went at 5 pm on a weekday but she gave us a lot of attitude. Otherwise, I liked that it wasn't too loud and the chefs were kind. Hopefully will come back on a better day!

Come for the sushi, stay for shoveling delicious garlic edamame into your mouth with a shovel! This newer sushi spot in Hillcrest is beautifully decorated with bespoke custom Japanese wall paintings and wood finishes. I started with the garlic edamame and ended with the garlic edamame as it was deliciously spicy, not clumpy, and well steamed. Between my edamame enjoyment I also ate the: - Wagyu Skewers which were incredddddibly flavorful and perfectly cooked. They're definitely a must try. - (1) Point Break Roll which has a thiiiuuuckk cut of tuna and was nice and spicy. Definitely get it. - (2) Kraken Roll adorned with a nice crunch from the red onions. Superbly get it. - (3) Daruma Roll with spicy tuna and a marinated jalapeño, but curiously wasn't that spicy. I would consider it again. - (4) Kami Roll which was very truffle forward. Like too much truffle. Stamped as Grant H avoid. The staff was super accommodating, especially as we got there later than I thought. The food came out quick, tasty, and nicely plated! Definitely hit this spot up and satiate your sushi fix!

Tried Dashi for the first time on a Saturday night. They were quite busy but we were seated relatively quickly! The place is a little small but they have seating at the bar and a few tables outside with no heaters. But overall everyone was super super kind! From the hostess, to the servers and the chefs! That alone would keep me coming back. But the food was actually really good!? I was pleasently surprised how each plate of sushi was well crafted and decently priced. Everything was extremely flavorful! Its very modern and it's not your standard flavors but I very much enjoyed it! Highly recommend!!

omg this place was giving fancy but it honestly wasn't that pricey, so if you're looking for a nice sit down that won't break the bank you should give dashi a try! it's about $16-18 for a specialty roll!! so cutesy vibes too miso butter mac & cheese was very al dente and flavorful. i liked that it came with corn and mushroom too. my fav mac & cheese i've had (granted i don't usually like mac & cheese) lemon glow had a strong spicy kick to it but i rly liked the citrusy salmon. sumo was my least fav thing we got because it had sooo much stuff that it felt overwhelming. it was unique tho

Parking is a nightmare good luck finding parking within a mile of the restaurant. Pros: atmosphere, drinks, service Cons: food wasn't great for the price, restaurant was small and crowded, no parking Service: All of our servers were friendly and very accommodating. Gave us some knowledge on the menu and recommended cocktails based on our preference. I had spilled my drink and they were quick to make me another one. Food: I had intended to get the prime ribeye cap steak but they ran out for the night around 8pm. I shared the steak sampler which came with four different cuts of steak and 4 sauces. I ordered medium and it was cooked medium/medium rare which was fine with me, it also had a good sear, almost burnt though. Out of the four steaks, we only liked two based off flavor and tenderness. The other two were more tough and gamey. None of the sauces really stood out but the bordelaise and horseradish were good. For our sides we got fries, roasted broccoli, and the grilled wedge salad. Fries were average. The roasted broccoli had really good flavor, I expected the broccoli to be al dente but it was cooked to mush and drenched in sauce. The grilled wedge salad was decent, there was a slightly bitter taste to it. I know it says grilled wedge but the experience of biting into the salad and it being both hot and cold was not pleasant. Cocktails: I tried the Honey Ryder and New Wave. These were recommended as the more fruity/sweet cocktails. You can definitely taste the alcohol but it's only 2oz so it's not too strong. Ambience: 10/10 I got seated downstairs by the bar. Only thing about downstairs is that it's too dark to take photos unless you use flash. Overall, I agree with the other reviews saying to go just for drinks and appetizers. I would go again just to sit upstairs and get drinks and take pictures. We left unsatisfied and ended up getting in-n-out after.

Now if you're super into smash burgers, this ain't it, and you really need to rethink your life choices. This bad boii right here is a thickun', with beautifully melted gruyere cheese, dijonaise, and caramalized onions tucked inside of a majestic sesame seed bun-served with fries, a dill pickle, and a FANTASTIC aioli for $17!!!! Yes, $17!!!!!! This burger ain't no joke, and it's more than enough reason to skirt your buns on down to try it out. Now the fun doesn't stop there. Have you freaking seen this place? The outside does not do it justice whatsoever. Once you step inside the door, you'll forget where you are-partially because it's pretty dark and you can't see shit, but the other part is that it's magical. I love poppin' up to the bar and chillin' in this space. There are two more totally different experiences to dine in, but I'll leave that up to you to find and explore. Although they're known for their burger, delicious drinks, and signature ice cream sandwich, there's so much more to write home about. I RECENTLY HAD ONE OF THE BEST MEALS I'VE HAD IN A LONG TIME HERE. The steak sampler we had, with sides of honey gochujang carrots, and beautifully scalloped potatoes, left us in ecstasy! The four cuts of beef were incredibly tender, deftly seasoned, and seared to perfection. The accompanying sauces, except for the tomato one, were also really good. And I have even mentioned the twice baked potato or the BROCCOLI!!! YES, THE BROCCOLI!!! If you get nothing else, get yourself a burger and some broccoli-TRUST!!! I could go on, but I'll leave you with this...the parking is not pleasant, but the food is fantastic, the music is fresh, and the drinks are splendid. Starlite, you must be my lucky star. Super HUGE thanks to Dani, the chefs, and the crew for making Starlite so amazing. Enjoy my friends.

There is a "happy hour" on Monday but it's called Ouster Monday, oysters are $1 and they have different specials that are not offered on the normal happy hour. Got the crispy chicken wings, Wagyu longaniza, and burger The chicken wings were very crispy and came topped with a jalapeño relish. The relish had a citrusy taste to it or maybe it was the liquid from the pickled jalapeños. I liked the crispness of the chicken but I think the relish was too acidic for me. The Wagyu longaniza was my favorite, very strong beefy flavor. It came on top of salsa matcha which i thought was very tasty so much that I dipped the wings and burger in the sauce. The slice of radish on top gave it a nice texture and crunch. I see the Wagyu hotdog is offered on the oyster Monday special so I'm gonna have to come back and try that for sure. The burger was cooked nicely, medium as requested. It came topped with an egg, truffled onion jam, and cheddar cheese. The bun was nicely toasted and the egg and cheese added a nice rich element to it but I didn't care for the onion jam, it gave the burger an overall sweet profile. I'd simply ask for it without next time. Over all a solid burger, maybe I'd add bacon too. I also had a margarita which was on happy hour special. I asked for it to be spicy and they added a tajin rim which was nice. Spicy and refreshing! Parking is all on the street so I had to part a few blocks away. Overall a solid happy hour. I'll be back on Oyster Monday for the hot dog and fish collars.
