My fiancée and I came to Dashi to celebrate our anniversary, and it was the perfect place for the occasion. We've been coming here since their soft opening and have visited several times over the past year, and every visit reminds us why we keep coming back. We were seated immediately at the bar, even without a reservation (though I'd definitely recommend making one, as it's been quite busy on previous visits). Sitting at the bar ended up being one of the highlights of the evening because we got to chat with the chefs, including the owner and head chef, Aries. We started with the miso soup, which was delicious, followed by the salmon crispy rice and a selection of sashimi. Everything was outstanding, but the salmon crispy rice has officially become our go-to appetizer. If it's your first visit, don't skip it! For our main course, we ordered the nigiri sampling, which included bluefin tuna, yellowtail, salmon, and two chef's choice pieces. After our sashimi course, Aries asked which fish stood out the most. We both immediately said the bluefin tuna, and he customized our order of nigiri such that the chef's choice selections were centered around that. One piece was toro belly (which I happily let my fiancée enjoy since that's her favorite), and the other was a marinated bluefin tuna that was one of the best bites I've had. Aries even took the time to show us how the tuna was cut and prepared, which made us appreciate the craftsmanship behind every piece even more. When he asked how we liked the chef's choice, we each admitted we wished we could have tried the other's piece. To our surprise, and without hesitation, he prepared two more so we could both experience each one. That level of hospitality and genuine enthusiasm is something you simply don't find everywhere. This is a sushi lover's dream. It's obvious that Aries and his team aren't just running a restaurant, but rather, they're passionate about the art of sushi, and that passion comes through in every interaction and every bite. We called ahead on a weekday to check if we needed a reservation and were told we didn't. We arrived around 6:30 pm and were seated right away, but it started getting busy shortly after--so it might be a good idea to make a reservation, especially later in the evening. We ordered miso soup, cucumber sunomono, and three rolls. The rolls were the highlight--fresh, well-made, and definitely something we'd order again. The miso soup, however, was disappointing. It was very salty, and the portion felt small for the $5 price point (most places charge closer to $2.50-$3.50). We actually had to add hot water to dilute it. It was also listed as agedashi tofu miso soup, but it didn't include agedashi tofu - it was aburaage instead. The cucumber sunomono was also on the saltier side. Overall, prices are a bit high--likely due to the location--and parking in the area can be challenging. One didn't have availability for hours and the second was closed. Ended up in a public lot across the street. $12. Not bad I guess. Didn't feel like doing laps looking for street parking. Entrance to the lot is on Fifth. Dashi is on across the street on the corner of Fifth and University. Walking in, place was packed. But after just a few minute wait, two spots at the counter was cleared for us. Gave us time to take pictures of the artwork on the walls. Liked the decor - clean, modern and simple. Sushi counter with the hot dishes prepped behind in the kitchen - open for viewing. Service was attentive and friendly. Refills without asking - even at one point just dropping off a carafe of water. Business was steady and though it's not a large dining area, the staff was on it. The only one that I didn't like was the mackerel but that's definitely personal preference. Darumi roll: 5/5 This was my favorite bite out of the whole night!! Parking sucks in the area, but that's hillcrest for you. There's plenty of metered parking a few streets down. Definitely worth a shot if you're in the area and looking for delicious, fresh sushi! I'm already planning my next sushi date so I can try more on the menu. Cucumber salad: (4/5) I loved the cucumber part, but not so much the other parts. The crispy rice wafer; however, was yummy. Passion fruit lemonade: (4/5) Little on the sour side, but it was delicious! My friend and I added sake to ours and it was perfect! Salmon crispy rice: (4.5/5) Delicious! A little too crispy for my taste. I did enjoy the flavors, it was very unique. The sauce was tartar with Serrano. Don't knock it till you try it! Sashimi platter: (5/5) Such a great price and the fish was oh so fresh. Salmon belly nigiri: (5/5) BOMB. It was melt in your mouth buttery soft. We ended up ordering 2. One wasn't enough. Kraken: (5/5) The kraken was crackinnnnnn okay! We ended up ordering two of them. This roll was delicious, all the flavors blended well and the fish is so fresh. Caramel matcha flan: (4/5) It was honestly delicious. I love how unique this was. The sauce and pistachios on the side were bomb. Our party of 2 came during their soft opening when they didn't offer reservations yet. Thankfully there were still a few tables for 2 still available though we came at around 6pm on a weekday. We really enjoyed our experience! PARKING: just with any other Hillcrest establishments, give yourself some time to circle around for street parking. ENVIRONMENT: located at a corner, easily seen. There were bar seats, many 2-person seats which can be pushed together for a larger party, and a larger table in the corner. The 2-person tables are very close to each other, similar to other sushi places. SERVICE: Divine was our server and was very attentive and personable. Our food came out in a timely manner. FOOD: We shared the following items and it was the perfect amount of food for us: -Uni ($20): 2 pcs; served with a generous amount of fresh uni -Salmon Crispy Rice ($14): 4 pcs; great to share -Classic Nigiri Set ($20): 6 pcs -Beef Skewer ($10): 2 pcs, marinated brisket, comes with sauces -Mr. Miyagi Roll ($17): topped with salmon that melts in your mouth OVERALL: Our party of 2 had a great time in Dashi and I'd recommend this place! read more
