The standout for sure was the 4 pc chef choice sushi as each item was well thought out and made me want to grab another. But ofc, all the other items were great too since each one was well thought out so you're getting more than just simply a regular sushi/sashimi bite. Location: There is plenty of parking in the area! Not only that, there is plenty of indoor seating so it doesn't feel like you need to worry about reserving really early on! Service: The service is definitely the standout! Our server Luis was very helpful in answering all of our questions about what to select and gave his thoughts on the menu and what each item would be best suited for the occasion! He even gave tips on how to best enjoy different items of the menu such as like adding more soy sauce vs having no need for more. I made a reservation at Chef JUN to celebrate a graduation. The nigiri and sashimi were super fresh and not fishy. I personally thought that the pieces were a bit small but extremely high quality. Our server was extremely attentive and kind. My favorite pieces had to be the truffle tuna. The uni was good but it could have been sweeter. It was fresh and not bitter but also not sweet like Hokkaido uni. I thought that tempura shrimp was good but the batter wasn't tempura batter and it was pretty thick. Chef Jun is a great spot for a quick bite, especially for their happy hour. It is weekdays from 3-5pm, and they offer any draft beer half off. For food, edamame is $3, gyoza is $4, stuffed jalapeno is $7, and their spicy tuna cracker is $8. I got to enjoy my favorite Crispy Tuna Rice and some edamame, and it was enough for me! The space of this location is by far my favorite as it is much newer and there is a large amount of seating. Happy Hour is definitely slow, so I didn't have to experience much of a wait time on anything and was able to enjoy my quick dinner solo. **August 2026: Sunday Evening Visit** My friend and I were in the mood for a sashimi dinner while we were in San Diego, but unfortunately, many of the hot spots required reservations. We decided on Chef Jun since they allowed walk-ins, and the setting seemed like a great environment! With the location right in the middle of a plaza and ample parking Sushi Jun seemed like a great place to enjoy a good meal. We shared the Sushi Kaidan for two ($199), which included an assortment of sashimi and sushi, plus a handroll and miso soup. Honestly, the presentation was really impressive and for the amount of food provided seemed like it was appropriately priced. They arranged the sashimi pieces on a stair-like display, and in the center they had a bowl of freshly cut sashimi. We were also given the option to eat the shrimp head raw or fried. We both went for fried, and it was really good. The fried shrimp was crispy and made it easy to eat the whole thing. The setup was very impressive, and the snow crab sushi bite was my favorite piece. The "meat" was really tender, and against the slight char on the outside, the contrast really amplified the crab's sweetness. The ebi sushi bite was served raw and was very refreshing, and it was my next favorite. But for some reason, the other sushi and sashimi pieces weren't memorable. I think either the fish flesh was really bland, or other ingredients like the wasabi or other paired ingredients just overpowered the piece and the flavor combos just didn't tickle my senses. The top, more premium fish was the otoro. It was beautifully rich and fatty, but the truffle definitely overpowered it, which was a shame. They also provided a complimentary dessert - but it was very heavy and dense, which also did help me leave with a great impression. When you get 2 Yelp Elites together who are both sushi lovers, you can expect an extraordinary dining experience. To maximize our experience, we went for the SUSHI KAIDAN for two. This was the deluxe assortment of sushi placed on a staircase of sushi heaven. There were 2 pieces of each of the following: amberjack, king crab legs, black cod, black sea bream, halibut, red snapper, shrimp, Hokkaido scallops, yellowtail belly with Hokkaido Uni, salmon belly with salmon roe, bluefin tuna with caviar, and toro with truffle. These were nice thick cuts and the presentation was beautiful. We loved how some of them were served on charred rice that gave it a rich smoky flavor. Twenty-four pieces of sushi was a lot, but on top of that, the Sushi Kaidan came with 2 handrolls and a sashimi plate that had the fried shrimp heads, Kumamoto oysters, salmon belly, yellow tail belly, bluefin tuna, red snapper, and shima aji. All of this was $199, which was a great deal! Honestly, the quality far exceeded our expectations and surpassed some of the high end Omakase restaurants that we've been to. Our lovely server, Lily, took excellent care of us, always making sure our water was refilled and ensuring we were satisfied with the food. We were both impressed with the quality of the fish and loved that it was reasonably priced. Loved the ambiance as well. We ordered the spicy garlic edamame, mixed tempura, rainbow roll, salmon skin hand roll, chirashi bowl, and the spicy chicken bento. Tempura could have crispier but the shrimp was cooked perfectly - not overdone like most places. Fish was all delicious. The yellowtail belly, salmon belly, and the scallops were all scrumptious. We loved the setup and our server was amazing (I can't remember her name)! I tried the Calpico Chu-Hi to start and wow! It is insanely good and dangerous! It has such a lovely taste and texture to it. I easily could've kept drinking it with no complaints. We started with the Chicken Karaage and it's different from any other chicken karaage I've ever had because they air fried them. These weren't greasy/oily, but still packed with flavor. I didn't use the sauce it came with either. For sushi, we tried the Avati roll (had a nice kick to it, but I would order it without pepper next time just because I'm not a big fan of pepper), the Chef's Special roll (very good again but would not have the pepper. I forget what fish was on top, but it was very buttery), and some Unagi (Eel) Nigiri (the BEST eel nigiri my guy and I have ever had! It was a huge piece of eel that was insanely buttery!) In addition, even though the restaurant became quite busy, the noise level is manageable and does not distract from the experience. Our server greeted us happily and enthusiastically. She acknowledged that one of us was celebrating a birthday. Service was provided at a great pace to start, but as it became busier and busier, (note: I overheard our server say that it was busier than she had ever seen), there were two mix ups in orders. It had that seared tuna flavor that I love because it's a bit smokey. Orange Roll (8.5/10) -- This is going to sound dramatic but it was an explosion of flavor the second I tasted it LOL. Super flavorful, fresh, and CITRUSY. Light spice that just boosts the flavor without taking over. Fire Fire Roll (8/10) -- I was told this is their most popular roll across all the Chef Jun locations and really represents them. It was really good! I love a good lunch special and Chef Jun delivers with the Poke Bowl and Miso Soup combo. Food came out beautifully prepared and was quite fast. The rice at the bottom of my bowl had a fabulous nutty taste, and it was piled high with fresh greens, pickled cucumbers, seaweed salad, avocado, and corn. I always find corn to be kind of a funny poke topping, but I know it's popular. The server was very attentive and came to me right away. The ambience at this location is much nicer than the original location at Bay Ho, and I venture to say that my dining experience overall was better! Came here on a Friday night at 7:30pm with a reservation. I put in the notes that it was my birthday but nothing was brought out or said about it. Food was mid, not great. The only things that were good were the handroll and the miso soup. My group ordered the Jun San ($48). The rice on the sushi tasted old and dry, and we weren't the only ones that thought this way as the table behind us left all their rice on a plate. Soba was way too sweet and did not taste right. One of the seared fish tasted like it was seared 15 minutes before they served it to us. I liked our waitress and she explained each dish to us. The service was good and she did what she could. However each round took nearly 30 minutes to come out and a lot of tables were just sitting there waiting not looking the happiest either.
