I was shopping on Magazine Street when I decided on a whim to eat here for lunch. Even though I decided to dine indoors, it was the outdoor patio dining area that drew me in with all the colorful seating and canopy above the tables. The decor inside is just as vibrant and colorful as it is outdoors. Fun paintings on the wall. There's a bar on the left hand side and booth seating on the right. You walk to the back to order and seat yourself. Cute drawing of a dog lying in a bun on the side of the napkin holder. The menu is above the counter, and it's a bit overwhelming. Who knew there were so many options for sausages. I decided on the Vegan Chipotle Sausage ($12.50). The list of toppings is even more extensive, which you can leave up to the chef, so you can guess, I decided to leave it up to the chef. I also purchased a fountain drink ($3.15). You give them your name when you pay, and they deliver your order to your table. While I was waiting, I also got a non-alcoholic drink at the bar, a Pacific Breeze ($5). It consisted of pineapple, passion fruit puree, and soda water. A deliciousness cold drink on a hot day. Staff called out my name and delivered my food. Wow! It was one loaded dog. Delicious. I approved of the toppings. If I had chosen, I may have over done it. Staff are super friendly. They were patient when ordering. I enjoyed the relaxed, chill environment. Dat Dog is this great and fun, for lack of a better term, hotdog stand. This is a really fun little business on Magazine Street. Basically, you go into it, walk to the back of the shop, order up what you want, and go to your table and they'll bring it to you. Simple as that. They have a truly unique section of food orientated items. My favorite is there alligator sausage dog. But, they have all sizes and shapes of food offerings, including some designed for the vegans out there. Of course, have other items as well. So, even though this place, at least by my understanding, is focused on dogs, you can't find other fun items to eat here, as well. This location also has a self standing bar. From there, you can grab a great selection of beers, cocktails, and mocktails if that's your preference. At the bar, you order separately from ordering your food. Thus, you can have a great experience if you just want to come in and just have a drink and sit back at the bar. You can even talk to the bartender if you want to. Very nice. In terms of layout, they have interior seating, some booths along the one wall, plus a very expensive outdoor patio. So, weather permitting, if you're interested in breathing in some fresh air while you enjoy whatever it is you're eating and drinking at this establishment, it's a great place to do it. Wow, still wonderful. Dat Dog has a large menu, including vegan, but I never get passed the huge variety of dogs. At this point in our repeated visits, I have tried the Alligator, Andouille, Bratwurst, Crawfish, Duck, Holiday, and the Classic Frank Dogs, and there are many more to go. And all go well with a cold Abita and Chili-Cheese Tots. I have eaten at all three Dat Dog locations (Freet, Frenchmen and Magazine Streets), and they are all great, but Magazine is closest to my heart. It's ... cozier, friendlier, warmer ... and five blocks from where I always stay when visiting NOLA. So add convenient to that list. Seriously, I think the krew there are just the best, couldn't be nicer, more considerate, family-friendly, full-measure kind of people. This was not as good as the Frenchmen street location. Hot dogs were not warm when they came out and it took an hour for the food to come! Tater tot's were cold. We got two hamburgers, two hot dogs and a salad. Even the soda didn't have bubbles in it from their machine, just flat sugary liquid. We couldn't believe how long it took. The service was friendly at the cashier despite maybe being overwhelmed. The seats and tables outside are also filthy and sticky, everything just felt dirty. Bathrooms and floor gross. It wasn't a great experience. The restaurant was not busy either. I was embarrassed because I hyped up the other location to my parents and it ended up being a disappointing lunch for how expensive it was too. read more

We have come here a few times to watch Florida Gator games as it's the NOLA gator club watch party location. It's always a good vibe, the game is on most of the TV's and sound is on for the games as well. Don't be dissuaded by the "hot dog bar" title. They know their food! All different kinds of sausage and and hot dogs as well as tons of toppings. Fresh hot tater tots and crispy battered fries accompany the selection of dogs. Went in for a quick lunch while we were picking up a few things in the area. They're currently offering indoor and outdoor dining, but it was a drizzly day so we opted for sitting indoors. I almost didn't stop in because I knew I was going to order a vegan item and they can be hit-or-miss at restaurants that are all about meat, but my vegan bratwurst was delicious. Whenever I hear Dat Dog, it makes me think of the New Orleans Saints. Who dat! Back before the coronavirus hit, I was in Nola for a bachelor party. I had heard of Dat Dog all the way from Houston and I was pumped to check it out for a late dinner with the crew on a Saturday. You order at the counter and they bring your food out to you. While they have more than hot dogs on the menu, Dat Dog is all about dogs with a Cajun twist. They have a bunch of creative options on the menu but I opted to create my own dog. I went with the gator sausage (when in Rome, right?!) and added a pickle slice, cheese, and dat sauce (similar to Cane's sauce). Plus some cheese fries. If you want to order alcohol, you do separately at the bar. The restaurant was pretty packed and we had a big group but we were able to find some room on their spacious patio. We put two picnic tables together and we were set. I prefer seating with back support so I've never been a fan of picnic-style seating but I made it work. Especially since the food was A+! A generous portion of crispy, seasoned fries smothered in melted cheese couldn't have been better. The hot dog also delivered and this was my first time trying a gator dog.
