My husband and I had this project on our to-do list for the 3+ years we've owned our Highlands duplex. Come to find out, it could be fixed in less than 30 minutes for roughly $75. The project: fixing the lock on our front door. I know, that sounds basic, but the lock looked several decades old, with the key worn down and not reliably locking and unlocking -- it's whole purpose in life. Plus the key was so old that you can't easily make copies. So we've been either entering via the other unit (while empty) or our back door. And considering the other issues we've had with our 100-year-old house, we figured this was going to be a big hassle to fix. Enter: procrastination. Well, this week I had had enough. So I sent out a few Request A Quotes via Yelp, and Dave Kerr Locksmith Service was one of the local businesses that answered. Dave asked me to text him pics of the lock and key. Based on this he said he thought the cylinder needs to be fixed, which comes with two keys. He gave me a quote of $78 on the spot (which was in line with the other quotes I got). And then 36 hours after submitting a Request A Quote on Yelp, he was at my house, working on my door, which was fixed in less than 30 minutes, with new modern keys that we can easily make copies of. I can't believe we didn't take care of this project sooner. I chose Dave because he was so quick to respond, easy to converse with via text and was transparent and in line with his pricing. Other companies wanted to come out to give a free estimate first, rather than trying to diagnose via pics. I get where they are coming from, but Dave just made this too easy. Top notch service at a great price. Dave was very friendly and punctual, and paid attention to Covid concerns - very important for someone working in your home. Dave repaired a sticky entry knob on my front door and extracted a broken key from the deadbolt in the back door. The price he charged was exactly what he estimated when we spoke on the phone, so he gets top marks for transparency. I had him cut me new keys that all work perfectly, and he even charged less than the terrible reproductions I had made at a big box store. But most importantly, he was honest: it would've been very easy for him to say that my old locks were insecure, or say that repairs would cost more than a replacement and go for an easy upsell. I don't know the first thing about locks, after all! But he didn't - he said my locks were quality and likely had years of service left. I had David cut two keys for a fire king safe. He did it quickly and correctly at a reasonable price. I then had David put new locks on my fifty year old storm doors. I could not find the locks at a local hardware store but he had both replaced within a week with matching keys.
