I was back again, this time to order take out. I was relieved to see the subs were wrapped in tin foil and paper. Sadly in a plastic bag though, but that's easier to recycle than hard plastic. Staff is very friendly and knowledge about the menu. They were right that the vegan cheese was actually good (why is it so hard to find decent vegan cheese?). What a find! Stopped in on a whim and was blown away by the service and the food. The gal behind the counter was so helpful and friendly. Pop machine was out of ice, but she remedied the situation after taking my order. Wasn't sure if I would like the sauce on my sub based on the description of 'creamy Italian', so I got it on the side. OMG it was so garlicky and delicious - be sure to get the sauce! I had the turkey sub and it was perfectly toasted and seasoned. Best sub I have had in a long time! I usually only come to Mount Vernon every 3-4 months, but I would make a separate trip just for this sub! read more

Took a long trip across Ohio and Mt. Vernon was on my way. This was the perfect place to stop for lunch and was so good I stopped again on my way back and stocked up on a few bottles of the sandwich sauce to take home! Stopped in for lunch today and had the Italian Beef. It was fantastic and so stuffed with meat, cheese and banana peppers that I could only eat and half of the sandwich. I had forgotten how great the fries are. The walls are decorated from top to bottom with rock and roll history and I always find something new. Dave's Cosmic Subs is not Subway, it's better. It's a small chain scattered in the eastern states. There's one in Mount Vernon. It has a fun atmosphere. They have good options for vegetarians. I was choosing a vegetarian sub, of which there are several that sounded good. It was suggested that I get the Grateful Dave. This comes with turkey but it was left off. It comes with avocado. This is about $6 for a sub. It came on a crispy sub bun. This wasn't like many places where you get home and it's soggy. In Mount Vernon there aren't many good places to eat. Dave's is one of the few. Much healthier than most options in town. read more

I've eaten a sub from Dave's twice. My favorite thing about them is that they have three vegetarian subd to choose from. I appreciate options! The first time I went here I ate in there so I was able to take in all of the decor and the atmosphere. I appreciate the hippie theme with the 60s music and visuals. The second time I went, I had to take a sandwich to go. It took about 5-10 minutes to get my food each time, but they did oven bake it. I also ordered fries both times, but I regretted it the second time. The first time they were great! The second time, they were soggy with grease, which I would have stomached, but the veggie burger sandwich was plenty filling. I didn't really need the fries! I'll definitely go back and I might just get the veggie burger sub each time because I like it so much! read more

I have been super excited to check out this place ever since I heard about it opening in mount vernon. Last day of school for the kiddos so I headed over to pick up a gift certificate for their bus driver. It was today Wednesday, sometime after lunch rush so I was able to find off street parking right outside the front door. No line. Huge menu mounted on wall above kitchen window. Seating available in the front and back. Decor totally reminded me of a taco place in Singapore I visited last year. Same metal wall down the halls.... kind of same concept. I figured since I was there I should probably sample one of their awesome sounding subs. I went with the "DAVE'S ORIGINAL GARDEN BURGER", fountain root beer and sweet potato chips to make it a combo. I paid, my order went through and I was left to mosey around I guess until I was called, nothing was really communicated as what the next step was so I took the opportunity to mosey around. Filled my soda, grabbed a few extra napkins, moseyed down the hall to check out back room - same decor as front. Moseyed on back up front. Nothing else to do so I stood at the closest table to the counter while I waited for my sandwich. Someone else was called. No big deal. The tattooed girl behind the counter let me know my order was next I thanked her. This is where it gets interesting - so the guy cooking yells out my order confirming no raw onion than ask the tattooed girl if my sandwich was supposed to be hot, she stepped back checked out the menu, confirmed yes and the guy said well the veggie patty is hot - it is what it is and the girl said whats done is done... WHAAAAAAAAAATTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is what it is and whats done is done????? Are you kidding me? The order wasn't even through the kitchen window yet, they had every opportunity to fix this mishap but rather than do so, they knowingly served this to me. It clearly has a loaf of bread with steam rising off of it that indicates this is a "Hot Sandwich" item. So why did I just take it when she called out my order? Why didn't I say anything? When I heard the guy ask, it wasn't in complete sequence with calling my order so I thought they were referring to someone else's order and thought what a sucker deal for that person. Well it was me. Once I opened my sandwich up I compared the items to what was on the menu - #1 being - its a HOT SUB. Put 2 and 2 together ah ha I was the one who got suckered. I knew I was going to review this place with it being new, so if this is the product they are willing to pass out to paying customers than I guess they get what they get. The sub came with 2 very flimsy slimy half beaten pickles that did not look appealing at all and Im a pickle person. The sandwich is very thick french like loaf, very hard and rough on the mouth if not warmed. The veggie patty had a unique taste, pretty good but was very mushy and crumbly - maybe not cooked long enough. The cheese was stuck to the bottom side of patty - stiff and half melted. Lettuce was very minimal, mayo was extreme and took over entire sandwich, which made it soggy since the bread was not toasted. The taste was there, just wish it had been made decent to get the whole effect. Def messy if eating on the go. Root beer was not super bubbly, after about 10-15 minutes it seemed flat. I almost forgot - No Gift Certificates Available. So I went down the street to another business. Ugh! Defeated the whole purpose. Oh well I have many years experience in many different areas of the food industry. I am not super particular but this is a complete utter failure to customers. I took it the guy cooking in back is a manager, the same guy who knowingly served a wronged to go order. Not sure if I will be back if this is how you treat customers. I heard a lot of mixed reviews when Dave's came into town. Just visited today for the first time and I really enjoyed the meatball sub and fries I ordered. I took half the sub home because the fries were HUGE! It's a serving like you would get at the county fair! Add a bit of salt and vinegar they have at the table and they are great! (I think The Joint on the square could up their fry game after trying these). I also got a Dave's cream soda which was nice and smooth. Reasons for the four stars is because I think it is a bit over priced, but... if you get two meals out of your sub and fries, it's reasonable. First off the sub I ordered (Greatful Dave) did not have the mayo or hot pepper juice that it was supposed to come on it. And since I ordered the Cosmic Dave sauce on the side because I was unsure if I would like it (was glad I had because I did not) my sandwich was VERY dry. Second My $7.49 6" sub had 2 thin pieces of turkey on it under the tomato, onion, avacado and sprouts. For that price it should have offered more meat or be way less expensive Third The french bread was AT LEAST a day old (at best). I am all for a crusty chewy sandwich but this sub was so dry it was like a crouton. It ripped up the roof of my mouth and I only ate half of the sandwich because it was so awful. Fourth The "pickle" I was served was a soggy water logged looking cucumber spear. NO pickle flavor at all or any flavor for that matter. I threw it away after one bite. I saw online that they jar and sell these "pickles" which baffles me. They are horrible. Fifth the overall price for 2 sandwiches (my hubby got the Ruben which he said tasted good but again we thought for $7.49 the size of the sandwich and quantity of meat was WAY overpriced) made into a combo with two bags of chips and a soda was over $25!!!!! Good service and pleasant to surrounding but the subs are subpar (pun intended) I got the steak sub which was a bit salty and I couldn't taste the horseradish that was supposedly on it. My Husband got the meatball sub which had good flavor although it was hard to eat because of the size of the meatballs and the hardness of the bread so if your going to order it I suggest you ask them to cut them in half, also the sauce was warm in some parts and cold in others. I bought a couple sandwiches for my son and I and I brought them home and the bread was so hard that I literally broke a tooth and I messaged them via Facebook about it their response was I will let them know as I preach to make sure we bake some but not overkill - corporate training they love to super bake it and not my preference - my apologies - let me know next time in and I will pick up your next sub on me as I hate break teeth style bread. 1st time I have been there was today ! Cute place with a cool theme ! Ordered the Dave turkey sub because it's a classic and easy ! This was a mistake ordering it ! Not much but a load of lettuce and a little bit of turkey and some seriously HARD BREAD ! You can go cheap with loading it up with ingredients but the bread has got to be FRESH with a cold sandwich just common sense folks ! This is why subway and the others are nationwide people ! I've been in here many, many times and I have yet to have the correct order. I really love the atmosphere, so that's what keeps me coming back, but at this point I'm really considering not going anymore. For example, I'll ask for a hot sandwich and get it cold, ask for extra sauce and not get any, or they will only put it on the side and not on my actual sub as well. In fact, the other day I called an hour ahead and asked for my order to be ready at 3 since I was very busy and in a hurry. We have been several times, and enjoy the veggie subs. The bread has a bit of crunch on the outside and really adds to the texture of the sandwich. So today my husband and I thought we would try Dave's - and were looking forward to it. Mount Vernon lacks quality food options and we are always interested in trying anything new. It was First Friday in downtown and this made getting to the restaurant difficult, I drove around for 10 minutes trying to find a parking spot. Finally, I find the spot and walk several blocks to Dave's. Upon arrival I discover that they are serving a limited menu due to First Friday?? Seriously - when I entered they might have had 10 customers and you cannot serve the full menu?? IN A SUB SHOP??? YOU SELL SANDWICHES! To say that I was shocked would be an understatement. If it was an establishment that had a full service menu ,, I might be able to understand this,, but you sell only one thing - sandwiches (hot and cold) and a community gathering prohibits you from heating up the sandwiches?? So, another one bites the dust- it is safe to say- Dave - we won't be back. If anyone asks us if we have tried Dave's we will be sure to let them know that if they are busy (or could possibly get busy) they won't be serving any hot food?? Thanks- but no thanks. read more
