I found this place as it was recommended by many locals. It's a nice diner. The servers are very friendly. Coffee is complimentary although the prices are a little higher than some places. We come to town twice a year for a fishing weekend. We discovered this diner on our first trip and go every time we come back. I had the meatloaf dinner (which I have every time). Southside Diner is absolutely amazing! I think this was our third visit. It reminds me of back home country cooking with the meatloaf, chopped steak, and turkey or roast beef boats being my favorites here. We rarely make it out to Mt. Vernon, but this is our go-to stop for getting a bite to eat in the area. Southside Diner is about 90 minutes from Columbus, but we always stop here during our annual trip to visit Schnormeier Gardens. It's become kind of a tradition for us. It's an awesome diner! We were in Mt Vernon to visit the Ariel Foundation Park. As usual. I asked Yelp for a diner or pub "near current location ". My fellow Yelpers have the Southside Diner great reviews so that's where we headed. The reviews were spot on and this was a great place to eat. It is truly a diner with a great menu that includes a number of daily blue plate specials. The interior decor has a lot of 50's and 60's memorabilia and is very interesting. The service was great and the food was delicious. I had their Southside burger that came with lettuce, tomato, mushrooms, onions, bacon, and blue cheese. It was excellent. I also ordered a side of fries that were also good. My wife ordered steak tips served over mashed potatoes (one of the daily blue plate specials). The serving size was big enough for a small family and it was also delicious. Came with a biscuit on the side. We thoroughly enjoyed the diner and our meals. Great food and great service. read more

i have never been to your place however, i never walk into your place, plus i hope anyone that has served for our county will never go or stop going after what i heard happen. there was a veteran that came in the resteruant with his serve dog (small dog) . the dog is for anxiety and leans on this man chest so he stays calm. they told this veteran he would have to leave or put his dog on the floor. the dog could not stay on his lap, he explained why and the staff that was helping this man didn't care and so the veteran had to leave. this is awful and unacceptable and i will spread the word to all veterans not to go to this establishment especially if you have any kinda service animal. do better!!!! read more

I haven't eaten here, but have heard good things about the service, until today. A fellow Veteran was telling me about his experience there, with his service dog. He was informed that the dog had to be on the floor. This veteran's service dog is small and considered a lap dog, the service the dog provides is to compress against the Veteran's chest when he gets anxious or upset. The dog wouldn't be able to provide the therapy it is trained to do, if it were on the floor. This service dog wasn't causing any inconvenience to anyone else by sitting on the Veteran's lap, and I find it completely disrespectful that anyone would tell a veteran anything about his service animal. One establishment that I will never give money to and am hoping that other Veteran's will not either. Shame on you Southside Diner....DO BETTER! read more

As close to quintessentially "diner" as possible. Food: solid! Eggs, hash, potatoes checked the right boxes. Biscuits and gravy -- HUGE, you only need one biscuit. Coffee was solid and fresh. (One exception - the grits were not stirred enough and were dry at the bottom of the bowl.) Service: friendly, fast, efficient and welcoming. Ambiance: roadside diner. All 3 orders of over medium eggs not cooked all the way, egg whites were kind of watery Toast tasted like it was made on griddle with oil rather than butter. $39 and some change for 1 adult, 2 children under 12. I called them to asked about your free options (shared cooking equipment and such). Usually grilled chicken and potatoes are gluten free as long as they're not cooked with bread or something. The woman who answered the phone (no name give ) was incredibly rude. I tried explaining what I was asking, and she said, "Then I guess potatoes are gluten free" in an incredibly rude tone. As a result of her rude tone and unkind words, we will never step foot into this restaurant. Stopped at Southside Diner, we seated ourselves, got up to go get menus, after about 10 minutes a server asked what we wanted for beverages, we sat another 10 to 15 minutes. My first meal here was the Coney bologna and when the description said "sloppy Joe" I thought at least it would be homemade. I was wrong. Nasty canned crap. The fried bologna wasn't terrible, fries were very hard. My husband got the fish sandwich, it covered 2/3 of the bun and was mediocre. Second meal here was the wings special. I got 7 tiny oven baked from frozen wings and hard fries for $12.99. I could've bought a whole bag of frozen wings and put them in my oven with the same mediocre results for less money. Not a single staff person asked me how the food was either time. The only reason I'm giving a 3 star is the peanut butter cup pie was amazing. The only saving grace. We were in town for the weekend, 3 adult couples, visiting from Columbus. We had a blast! Our friendly waitress made us feel right at home. The interior was a cool and cozy diner concept. The food was fantastic - exactly what we were hoping for and more! The LA Cinnamon bread was delicious. The Southside Diner defines the genre of the American diner. Breakfast (which is served all day for people like me who like breakfast food at any time of day other than breakfast time) starts out bright and early and the classic comfort food menu goes strong until closing. Sundays are extra special with stick to your ribs like Grandma used to make dinners available so nobody leaves feeling hungry. If you want a classic burger, fries and shake (served in the metal container) you are in luck also. Desserts? You better believe it! In short there is something for everyone and it is all done well and for reasonable prices. Would you rather eat these comfort foods at home? Ask for carryout. The food quality was subpar. The prices were too high. But the real kicker was terrible service. Ridiculously slow, given that we were there for a late lunch and the restaurant was nearly empty. It took over 20 min to get our order. Appetizers were greasy. My soup was a tiny plop of tasteless glop. My sandwich was a tiny greasy grilled square. My husbands omelet was tiny, with a single slice of Velveeta cheese and the wrong kind of toast. My son's $20 "cheesesteak" was barely passable even when dipped in Aus jus. We had to beg for water refills and no extra napkins were even available or offered. For $60...I would expect decent food and service. We will never return. We love diners (our favorite restaurants are diners in Bucyrus and Galion), but will avoid Southside in the future... read more

Service was great, as usual, and the food came out fairly fast even with a bustling morning crowd. I got the "Blue Plate Special" - 2 eggs, scrambled, hash browns, sausage links and toast. All of which hit the spot! The only reason I have not given them a 5 stars is the lack of panache in the breakfast menu, a fusion of something unique and avant that strives to reach a rung above the run-of-the-mill eatery.
