Daaaaave's. A local gem in Davis Square. They have so much going on in a relatively small shop: 1. Fresh Pasta - it's in the name, they do an incredible job. I love the raviolis in particular. The vodka sauce is perfection. They have a whole case of prepared foods too. I often get a side of veggies with my pasta, partial to the garlic green beans! (They also do pasta making classes after hours, fun friends night or date idea) 2. Sandwiches- I dream about the grilled flank. I also went through an Avo BLT phase, for over a year I had it once a week. 3. High end groceries - sometimes I just need a lime or a bottle of BBQ sauce, they happen to be right around the corner from me so I love the convenience as well as their dedication to stalk quality items. They have a little of everything including all your staples plus produce, dry goods, an impressive cheese case, and a deli counter. I've found some new favorites here and been impressed by the specific best in class things they carry. 4. Wine & craft beer - they often have tastings and always really knowledgeable staff available. More than a few times I've been unsure what to get, told then what I'm making for dinner and got some great recommendations. Great fresh pasta cut to order while you wait. We love the black pepper fettuccine. Also frozen lasagne is great for those nights we don't feel like cooking- roasted vegetable and chicken sausage are our favorites. Frozen pizzas are delicious. Sandwiches made to order are great for picnics. We also love the olives and spreads they offer. They always have interesting boxes of cookies and chocolate we like to try. It takes some trial and error to figure out what you'll like here. SANDWICH COUNTER: The sandwiches are always very rich and heavily dressed with mayo/cream spreads. In addition to this being heavy and overpowering, the bread can be pretty soggy. Even if I think the ingredients on a sandwich together sound great, I usually end up being pretty disappointed by the sandwich. I also was told that I couldn't order soup over the phone, which I thought was strange. The lunch line here is manageable during most weekdays, but on Fridays it's an absolute zoo. SNACK COUNTER: There is SUCH a pleasantly large variety of baked goods, snacks, chips, candies, chocolates, beverages, etc. They have a great mix of classics (like Doc Brown's Cel-Ray soda) and drinks from local vendors like Waku tea. MARKET AREA: So many nostalgic favorites can be found here! There's biscoff cookie butter, stroopwaffles, taza chocolate, and so much more. I cannot say enough great things about this place. Whenever I'm driving through Davis I have to stop in. Their fresh pasta and sauces are delicious, their selection of cheese is fabulous and they stock Jeni's ice cream. And I mean ALL the flavors, not the few they have at Whole Foods. Did I mention they sell frozen tubs of their own cookie dough that they make those amazing giant chocolate chip walnut cookies with? Cause they do. What a great find in Davis Square! This was a recommendation for a local and it did not disappoint. We ordered sandwiches from the deli; the California #1 on focaccia and Italian sub. The sandwiches are huge, so make sure you are hungry! They also sell fresh pasta and sauce, which I also picked up. They cut the fresh pasta right in front of you, which is awesome! I picked up some rosemary pasta (we seasoned it with Parmesan, olive oil and butter) and beef ravioli with tomato basil sauce. It was delicious!!! The key to this amazing sandwich shop/deli/pasta shop/supermarket is the ingredients. They are serious about the quality of what they sell and that is why the have such a great reputation. Their sandwiches are amazing. Try the Brazilian Hangover Cure Sandwich. You can taste how fresh the ingredients are. Because this is not primarily a sandwich shop, there isn't that much room to sit. The selection of cheese is fantastic and diverse. I love that they have Shy Brothers' Hannahbell cheese. These adorable, thimble-shaped cheeses are so delicious and keep a surprisingly long time. Get all four flavors. The fresh pasta. Oh, the fresh, hand-cut pasta. I love the black pepper fettucine. But beware: follow Dave's cooking instructions or else it'll turn into a giant glob of carbs (not that that happened to me or anything...). The homemade sauces: the pesto is exquisite. Thick and flavorful. The arrabbiata (sp?) is equally delicious, as is the mushroom sauce. Mmm. The frozen ravioli is a non-cook's dream. I love the crab. One seemingly small-looking package of ravioli will easily feed two if paired with one of Dave's sauces, so keep that in mind. Also, be sure to try some of their many samples of cheese, bread and meat. The prosciutto, which I sampled and also bought, is thinly-sliced salty goodness. Also love their wine selection. And, I think this was seasonal, but do get their pumpkin cupcake if they have it. Basically, this is a gourmand's paradise, minus the pretentiousness. Tiny but crammed full of awesome stuff, from prosciutto to Pat O'Brien's Hurricane mix to chocolates and cheese galore. I had your caprese panini with prosciutto on focaccia (although you ran out of basil pesto to my dismay) which was perfectly grilled and utterly delicious. And really large! For $9, totally worth it. The lunchtime line is long but the wait wasn't too bad and my friend and I managed to snag a table by the window. Her turkey/spinach/smoked mozz sandwich was also pretty stellar. Afterwards, I couldn't resist the prosciutto calling out to me from the deli counter and she couldn't resist the raviolis. May 21, 2013 Oh my, I can't believe I waited until after I moved away to finally try this place. The sandwiches are every bit as delicious as everyone says. We tried the Veggie Goat on pane rustico toasted and the Arugula Artichoke on sliced ciabatta -- both outrageously good. Other than that, it's a small shop that has a lot of diverse, local and international products. But of course, the highlights are the freshly made pastas and bread. It's way too dangerous living so close to Dave's. On my walks home, I often stop by to "just browse" but find myself leaving the shop with wine and pasta in my hands. They have a great wine selection and knowledgeable staff. I tend to choose wines based on their labels but the staff provides helpful tips whenever asked. They also have wine tastings once a week! The store offers many specialty items, and I love seeing their seasonal fresh pasta offerings. A lb of ravioli will feed me for several delicious meals. Ofc I won't forget mentioning the sandwiches! There are so many choices but I can't say no to its fig and prosciutto sandwich with focaccia! One of the best sandwiches I had in all of Massachusetts! Friendly, fast service to grab yourself a very tasty, fresh sandwich. They have more than a handful of bread options, on top of a crazy selection of meats and toppings! I've tried the Italian and Spicy Turkey, both of which I would highly recommend. Each is around $10, and while that seems pricey, one half is more than enough to make me stuffed. I haven't tried the cheese or pasta, but these are very popular. They also have a wide variety of imported snacks, holding some special kinds of Haribo gummies, Perugina chocolates, and some snacks and candy you definitely wouldn't find in a CVS or Walgreens. There are 6-8 seats inside, in a tightly packed area facing the window, and five or so tables for groups of 2-3 outside. I think that the sandwiches are really the star at Dave's. I'm really picky when it comes to sandwiches, and Dave's has never let me down. Yes, the line is always long, and the staff is not always the friendliest and sometimes quite slow, but it's all worth it. So far my favorites are the Chicken Caesar (their caesar dressing is addicting), French Ham, and Avocado BLT. Beware that the sandwiches are HUGE, and they also tend to give you a different type of bread than you asked for (like pane rustico instead of ciabatta). Shopping here can get pretty expensive, but you get what you pay for: local produce, great meats and cheeses, and some high quality dry goods. Their selection is generally not quite as good as Formaggio's, but it's still a great thing to have in the neighborhood. The wine and beer section is also a plus. read more

I've enjoyed everything I've ever gotten here, and that includes the sandwiches, pasta, and sauces. I've gotten a few sandwiches here before, from catered ones to freshly made and grilled ones. GET THEM GRILLED! For me, there's nothing like biting into a a just-assembled artichoke and arugula sandwich on focaccia right off the panini press. I've also had the roasted veggie goat, which was also amazing and the turkey and cheddar, which was pretty standard. For pasta sauces, my favorite one from them were the sweet pea and prosciutto sauce. It was rich and had a nice smoky flavor from the prosciutto, but it didn't manage to be too heavy. I've only ever gotten their egg pasta, but it goes well with any of their sauces! I'm confident getting anything from Dave's, especially in the pasta sauce department, and I really can't wait to come back! read more

Every town should have a shop like this. For two people, we got homemade ravioli. They have about 5 different options of ravioli types and we couldn't decide on just one. We got a 1/2 lb of pumpkin and 1/2 lb of spinach.. I could've used a stronger pumpkin taste out of the pumpkin ravioli, but it was still good. In addition, we got the walnut parsley pesto - great choice. They had three different types of pesto to choose from!!! We went with an iggy's loaf of bread to accompany the pasta; however, I wasn't too wild about it. You can't say the place doesn't have options for everyone. Their sandwich selection was overwhelming - ranging from pre-made specialties to make your own with every type of cheese, veggie, protein, bread you could imagine.
