I wasn't too familiar with this franchise and always passed by it with so many other food options available. After trying my first Dave's in Pinole, this was my 2nd and had the same experience: consistent. This one is in El Cerrito Plaza Shopping Center by the BART station. I ordered Dave's # 2: Two sliders with fries and comes with pickles ($17.49). I chose the medium with heat options of No Spice, Little Mild, Mild, Medium, Hot, Extra Hot and Reaper. I also got a side of Kale Slaw ($4.59) and added a large Crispy Fried Pickles ($7.99). Mind you, this was a snack, so the sliders were the perfect size. One for me and one for the wifey and we shared the rest. The chicken is crispy on the outside but was simultaneously moist and tender inside. The heat level is basically how many (or how little) they sprinkled on the spice powder. The side of Kale Slaw provided a nice buffer to cut out the saltiness as it's a nice balance of crispy, fresh veggies with a sweet and tangy flavor. I also loved the side of pickles that came with the # 2. They're just plain pickles, and they were definitely better than the Crispy Fried Pickles (skip in my opinion). These were overly seasoned and salty to my liking. I ended up removing the breading just to get to the pickles inside. I also found the price to be too steep to justify the price and quantity that came with it. Overall, it's a solid sandwich that makes chicken right. Imagine the most hyper-palatable, unnaturally radioactively-hued garbage available from modern food science, then prepare it like you would for a rabid stray animal that attacked your pet. So overhyped it's ridiculous. The food is served cold, way overpriced for a chicken tender on a cold Hawaiin roll with 3 shreds of cabbage they claim to be coleslaw. With all of the "fried chicken" establishments opening up, comparing can get a bit repetitive. With that being said, I prefer Krispy Krunchy. Now that's not to say Dave's is not good because I love Krispy Krunchy. I'm just not a fan of how the chicken is fried. The bun on my slider was cold. I added honey to it as I read about it on another review. Oh my goodness, it was absolutely delicious I suggest requesting that they add ore sauce to the bread and not a small drizzle on top of the chicken. Those who follow my reviews know I avoid national chains in favor of locally owned restaurants for the most part, but Dave's Hot Chicken is a locally owned franchise, so I guess it counts. My friend Yasser H. loves Dave's . His spice tolerance is much higher than mine, but Dave's has three spice levels mild and lower, so he told me there would be something for me. Today I tried it for lunch. I ordered online so I didn't have to wait in line, as I had a couple of appointments today at Kaiser Richmond. The website was very easy to navigate. You could choose your dish, the spice level, switch out the sides and opt in if you wanted packets of condiments, plastic utensils, napkins, etc. I really appreciated the latter, as too often I am given utensils and other items I don't expect and don't need or want. I ordered one slider and switched out the fries for coleslaw. Mac and cheese was the other option. Sauce was included and next time I would decline it as I didn't use it. I placed my order after I had done my morning routine so I could go right down and pick it up. When I arrived someone just pulled into the blue space right in front of the restaurant, so I had to pull into a space a few storefronts away. I didn't notice a closer door as I passed and went into the door on the corner. A nice young man held the door open for me. I went to the pick up area and told the young woman behind the counter my name and she gave it to me, asking whether I needed anything else, which I didn't. When I was leaving I saw the other door and another nice young man held it open for me. When I got home I unpacked my food and made my tea. The slider came w/ extra pickles. The chicken was a generous portion. The bun was larger than a traditional slider but smaller than the amount of chicken. The chicken was wonderfully flavorful w/o any spicy heat. The coleslaw had a hint of sweetness, but wasn't drenched in dressing. It was delicious. I will definitely return, maybe even to eat in. It was a delicious lunch for less than $13 including a 20% tip. The box the food came in was heavy paper and recyclable, the inner paper lining going into the compost so it's pretty Earth friendly. Food: Their tenders are very juicy, served on a slice of bread if you didn't order a slider, and dry seasoned with a 7 tier spicy range from no spice all the way to Reaper. The slider bread is fluffy and sweet, almost like Hawaiian bread, and set on the flat top to get a nice light crisp on the inside. Their fries are crispy and perfectly seasoned with alight cajun style seasoning. Their pickles are also very crunchy and fresh, definitely not the low quality, soggy pickles you get at other fast food places. Their fries come with a simple thousand island style dip, nothing crazy but not bad either. Service: They have standard fast food service, you order up at the register, get your ticket and wait for them to call your number. Nothing special which makes ordering quick and easy. Atmosphere: The inside is busy and vibrant as we went on a Friday night. There is plenty of indoor seating and some outdoor, great for groups. This location opened up this week so I decided to try Dave's for the first time after many good recommendations from friends who had tried daves' other locations. it was around 10PM so the ambiance was very calm which I did not mind because I know during the day this place is very full. Going In, I was unaware of the menu so I decided to just go with a daves sandwich meal ($14.99) to start off and chose 2 different heat levels (medium, hot). The cashier was a teenager who was very friendly with good service and even talked to me a little about Dave's and how the pickup/ordering process worked which was very helpful as I was very lost coming into this place. He took my order and I of course had to tip him for his amazing service. Once I received the food, I was instantly intrigued into how it would taste because of how delicious it was but once I took my bites into the sandwiches, I was a little bit disappointed. the chicken seemed to be pretty powdery as if they rolled the chicken in powder instead of using sauce to add the spiciness to the chicken. The flavor of each bite though wasn't horrible. I still enjoyed each sandwich and their respective spiciness levels and none were overboard with heat levels which I was very happy of. In terms of rating on the sandwiches I'd rate these a solid 7.5/10 only because like previously stated the chicken did have a big powdery taste to it but maybe it's because it's a new location so they're still getting the hang of it which is understandable. Now onto the fries, I can say these were very delicious 9/10. They were very well cooked and crunchy to my liking instead of being under or over cooked. This was 100% the best part of the meal. They also had a bit of seasoning to them which added that extra wonderful taste that I enjoyed. it was also a decently sized portion which for the price I paid, should be that if not bigger. In conclusion, I would rate this experience a 8/10 because although it was very good, this place is pretty pricey at $15 for a meal with no drink. With drink included this can run you $20 which is a lot in my opinion for a sandwich with fries. Would I come here again? Yes I would, I would have to give this place another try and see if the chicken powdery feeling was a single occasion type occurrence or if it's just how their sandwiches are.
