Be ready when you come to this particular Nation's. When you go inside, you wait in line right away to place your order. You pay, give a tip upfront, get your receipt with a number on it then go find a table to sit at. When your number is called, you go to the counter to pick up your food and take it to your table. If you want forks, knives or napkins, you have to go and get them. If you want syrup or butter, you have to go and get them. Then, after you eat, you have to take your plates, etc. to the bussing area to clean off your plates and stack your trays. I felt like I was working the whole time and I didn't like that. Also, you need to get a code to get into the bathroom. I don't know if all Nation's operate this way now or not, but I am less inclined to come back to this one. Always my favorite! Bacon Cheeseburger- now $12. I always visit here at least once when I come to the Bay Area to help out my folks. It's getting to be monthly trips now so I'm getting Nations on the regular. Usually we go Sunday after church so the folks can get "breakfast for dinner." My dad always gets the two egger breakfast with sausage. My mom the french toast. My brother Pete usually an omelet. I'm the odd one since I have to have a cheeseburger. Since I grew up in El Cerrito, Nation's was the place we would go after the prom - open 24 hours. There's something about the delicious miracle whip dressing and sweet white onion. So the trick here is that you gotta join their loyalty program, otherwise it's way too overpriced for what it is. (with the loyalty they always have some type of coupon that's gonna save you 30%+). After a visit to Miller Knox park we went to Nations for lunch. This must be the flagship restruant of the chain. It is large and bright. The booths and tables look new. Everything seemed clean. We order our lunch from the counter. The staff were polite. My husband had the grilled ham and cheese. He enjoyed it. I split a burger with Juniper. I thought the burger tasted old. The tomato and lettuce were fresh. There was plenty of mayo and extra pickles (per Juniper's) request. We had chocolate milkshakes. They were thick and creamy. I used to come here with my mom, a rare event when I was younger, because we didn't eat a lot of meat. In high school, kids from AHS would meet here after dances. But, that's the past. I came here to get my husband a burger. I'd gone to the one closer to home, in San Pablo, and it seemed a bit sketchy so I drove back here. I parked fine and went in. I was greeted and placed my order. The women working in the back were quite nice. I waited for my burger. I felt bad for them because some jerk came in demanding something. He was probably homeless, I don't know but he had a whole bag of some food that he probably dumpster dove for. Not the problem, but the disrespect for the women in the back was the issue. I think they asked him to leave the bag outside and he said that it wasn't bothering anyone. He didn't bother me, so I didn't mind. They don't have a gluten free bun or bread, so I didn't even bother to order, thus the loss of a star. I didn't order the dessert because they are very, very sweet and not as flavorful as I remember. Growing up in a sugar free household, made them taste much better than they do. But, they were good for the burger, the fries and the drink. So, I mention my early memories of this place because it looks just like it did when I was younger. Acturally, no. The dining room was added at some point. I do remember that. I love nation's pies they have a large selection to choose from. My favorite oie is the seasonal key lime pie. The pie is tangy and tart and delicious. The service is quick and the staff is friendly. Nation's also has excellent burgers and fries. read more

I know it's absurd, but I like to identify a "special" place to review for every 100th Yelp review I write. So you're probably wondering what the big whoop is about reviewing Nation's for my 6,500 Yelp milestone. OK, I admit it...I blew it and didn't save a real "special" place like Graceland, Swan Oyster Depot, or Diamond Head. Nope, I'm here to inform you that I was excited to get a so-called diet version of their greasy, satisfying fast food. Oh yes and to add insult to injury, I had it delivered rather than face the temptation of overloading on my order. I was good...relatively speaking. I ordered the $9.30 Lettuce Hamburger Wrap. I ordered the Back to School special that is a hamburger, fries and drink for $10.00. The hamburger was cooked well. The fries were good and you can't go wrong with the drink. So the remaining two women seemed to switch off between taking orders and cooking on the griddle. We tried the pie of the month special, peaches and cream, which was light and not overly sweet. The diced peaches were probably canned but still yummy in the pie. The crust was light and flaky although I would prefer it a bit toastier. My absolute favorite dessert from Nations is their cheesecake. The blueberry one is always a hit in my family. I am biased though because its my favorite kind of pie. It was the first time the hubby has tried it and he liked it even though he isn't a sweets person. It was soft and creamy with real banana chucks! I got the regular size slice which is 1/4 of a pie. They also have a small slice option though if you just wanna try it. It took me a little over two years since living in the Bay Area, but I finally got to try something from Nation's Giant Hamburgers. Located in El Cerrito, this location is easily accessible and has their own parking lot. I was so impressed by the three women who were working when I arrived. They had such a good flow with one another and were able to get through both breakfast and lunch orders that were simultaneously coming in. They were also all wearing their face masks correctly and the cashier did a good job of thoroughly washing her hands after helping folx before helping her coworkers to prepare orders. I ordered their cheeseburger (they had a buy one get one free coupon) so all together my order came out to $7.41. I didn't realize how large their burgers are. I love that it came packed with tomatoes, onions, and lettuce and all the ingredients were nice and fresh. Their cheeseburger also came with two slices of cheese. I love this Nations; my favorite late night go to.I'm always skeptical of the standards that fast food restaurants have, but I never feel horrible from ordering at this location. The food always taste great and the service is okay depending on how busy they are. I always give the workers grace because I assume it's not always easy catering to the late night crowd. I also appreciate that unlike other Nations there isn't a huge population of stragglers that aren't ordering anything. I've been going to Nations for over 40 years at several locations around the Bay Area. Most recently I go to the El Cerrito location and up until now have had fairly good experiences. However, last night when I ordered my salmon burger with cheese, they forgot to put cheese on the on the salmon burger. I went in tonight to order another salmon burger, and informed them that they forgot to put the cheese on last night. As a very long time customer, I thought it would be a simple crediting of two bucks for the cheese. I forgot to put on last night. But no, The manager there was a really uptight person who dug her heels in and told me that because I didn't call in when I noticed there was no cheese on it that she could not refund the money. The problem is I picked up the burger at 2:55 so by the time I got home and noticed there's no cheese on it they were closed so the only time I could bring this up was the next day. She told me oh well you have to bring it up the same day. I'm furious. I sincerely hope that the owner of the store gets this because you have lost a customer for life now! Not only that, I will go out of my way to tell everyone what a horrible experience I had at Nations El Cerrito. It's also a shame that I'm leaving this terrible review, because I have recently reviewed these guys as one of the nicest places I've been served at particularly Ravida one of the woman that worked there.
