First Impressions: Barney's Gourmet Hamburgers Mother/Son lunch date at Barney's Gourmet Hamburgers! Yesterday, while in Berkeley, we decided to try BGH for lunch. Honestly, I can't say enough about how pleasant our experience was. Located in Berkeley, I was able to find street parking with a 2-hour limit close to the establishment. Upon our arrival, we were greeted and given the option to dine inside or on the covered patio. Although it was beginning to rain, we opted for the outdoor seating for the ambience. The fire pit, heated lamps, and the umbrellas really set the tone for a relaxing dining experience. The boys ordered a plain hamburger with curly fries, chicken tenders with skinny fries, and Oreo milkshakes. I decided on the specialty western burger and a Turkish coffee. I was assured the kids' fries would be plentiful, so there wasn't a need to order à la carte. The food was delicious and flavorful with great portion sizes. Our needs were anticipated, kindness exuded from the staff as well as timely servicing. We dined uninterrupted but not neglected. We raced to see who could complete the word searches, rated our food, and enjoyed each other's company while watching the rain fall. 10/10 we would do it again. read more

These guys are theives. $20 for a hamburger with no sides is absurd. Go to Fat Apple for a great burger with sides for a lot less. We had been going to Barney's for the shakes. They used to be $8.95, then we went three months later and it cost us $26 with tax, no tip for two shakes. That is way too much money for any milkshake and we will never go back. read more

Had the chicken and waffles, the curly fries, and a chocolate blackberry milkshake. Came out piping and delicious! The burgers looked really good, too (they are known for that, after all). Burgers are bad now. I wouldn't typically complain about a burger so much except for the fact that these burgers cost nearly $25. For $25 just for the burger, I really expect it to be awesome! I know beef prices have gone up but a ton of other burger places in the Bay Area are making amazing burgers at a lower cost. This used to be my absolute favorite burger in the whole Bay area and by far my favorite Barneys. I was so disappointed this evening. I accomplished a major professional milestone today, so I decided to take myself out to my favorite local burger spot and treated myself to as many things as I wanted: pickle chips, curly fries, a side of ranch, a diet Pepsi, and the animal burger. I used to live closer to this location and came here regularly about 3 to 4 years ago and have not been back since today. I have no idea what happened but the burger was totally flavorless, no seasoning. The texture was super mushy and gross, it was completely bloody and undercooked, and it was supposed to come with hot caramelized onions on top and the onions were completely cold as if they've been grilled earlier in the day, set aside and then plopped on my burger. They had to re-cook my burger and caramelize new onions to put on top. Also, the Pepsi zero tasted like fabuloso cleaning soap. I mentioned this to the server and said that it tasted as if someone had cleaned the soda line, but had not flushed it out and he said that they had just gotten a new line... Luckily, the server who waited on me was lovely, but there were so many things wrong with this meal and for the price, I don't think I'll ever be going back. The pickle chips were very weird, the fried portions were super chewy and it felt like they had been pre-frozen or something... Odd. The new buns are not as good as the old buns. Overall, I was just so disappointed with the food quality. It used to be phenomenal and now I would say it's just bad. Food: I ordered the Chipotle Burger withspicy chipotle sauce, jack cheeses and sauteed mushrooms. I also had the steak fries and a Coke. My burger was delicious 8.5/10. Nicely seasoned, cooked to perfection. ( I like mine well done.) The fries were slightly crispy on the outside yet tender on the inside. Just the way I like a steak fry. My husband had the Beach Body Salad. I dont like salad but it looked great and he enjoyed it. Ambiance: Just a regular burger joint. Nothing special but not bad. Service: Service was ok. A little slow and the wait staff did not seem super engaged. That said they were pleasant in interactions. Parking: Well, its downtown Oakland friends. What can I say? I have eaten at Barney's for Brunch and for Lunch. Both times my food was delicious. I tried several sides including onion rings and sweet potato fries. The service was good, I believe it was the owner who stopped by our table both times to make sure everything was going well. It was clean and and music playing was a good variety and not too loud. Took a hike on a Sunday, so beautiful! We were famished!!! We dropped into Barney's for a delicious meal. Husband had cheeseburger and fries, I had salmon quinoa bowl. Thick, blistering steak fries came out first! These fries were hot, perfectly crispy exterior and flakey, steamed potato perfection and they arrived before our entrees. We gorged ourselves on these delectable morsels with ketchup. My husband's cheeseburger was perfectly prepared served on a seeded bun. My salmon was SO good! The salad had pickled onion and crispy quinoa which gave it an earthly taste. We had SO many fries before and during the meal we were stuffed!! The service was friendly and fast! We couldn't have picked a better spot for a last-minute Valentine's Day date night. The ambiance was perfect, our orders were taken within minutes, and the food arrived promptly and exactly as described. Our waiter, Emiliano, was hands down one of the best I've ever had--attentive, friendly, and genuinely great at his job. Whether that speaks to how well this place treats its employees or we just got lucky, we had an outstanding experience and will definitely be back. As for the food, I ordered the Moroccan burger with bacon, plus a full side of French fries to share--which, honestly, was enough for three or more people. We also got the Mediterranean plate, which was solid overall (4/5 stars). Some of the tomatoes and peppers seemed hastily plated, but the falafel was fantastic. Their house-made ranch is some of the best I've had. My girlfriend went with the turkey club, which was massive and hit the spot. We also shared a milkshake, and for the price, the portion was generous, and the ingredients tasted a notch above the usual. About the food: my party and I had the California and the Santa Fe burgers (on gluten free buns) - both cooked right and though with flavorful ingredients, the taste was a still a bit bland. The absolute worst! Their fried chicken sandwich used to be so good. And my brother loved the burgers. On the menu it says chicken breast fried but what you get is 3 FROZEN chicken fingers off the kids menu in a bun with very low effort made coleslaw. Rubbish! Dreadful, incompetent, and lazy wait staff. 5 or 6 just milled about. It was around 3:30 pm on a Saturday. 1. The condiment containers were empty on our table and so was the salt or pepper, too. 2. I asked for a straw and the waiter dropped one. No one picked it up off the ground for 30-minutes. They just stepped on/over it. 3. I was charged almost $10 for bacon and avocado b/c the waiter never showed me the list of special burgers. Many of them had both those ingredients for just a few dollars more. 4. I had to ask for cold water. When it arrived it only had a few ice cubes - all melting - and the glass wasn't full. When I asked the waitress to give me more ise, she returned the glass w/no ice just water up to the brim so I couldn't even lift it up to drink. I had the Western burger and a salad we got one curly fry that we were all able to share! Everything was delicious. The service was quick and everything was served fresh. Super expensive. This place is near a bunch of good restaurants. I'm not sure what happened here. The food is not very good, the prices are incredibly high. The place looks like an Applebee's inside, but the outdoor deck is quite nice, and if you ignore the constant buzz of traffic, you can catch yourself enjoying the weather. The burger ($17) was terrible. The tomato was bland, a single leaf of lettuce, a sad and soggy pickle spear, and one slice of red onion. The burger patty itself was like a hockey puck. Dry and unseasoned. Not that I eat hockey pucks that often, but I imagine this is what one would taste like. The chicken sandwich was just sad ($21). They wasted an entire head of cabbage just to hide how small the actual chicken was. Like a thin-smashed tender. The breading on it was quite nice though... so that's good? The only good thing about our meal here was the fries. They don't come with the $21 chicken sandwich ot the $17 burger. A single fry order is $5. Just unbelievable how much a simple lunch costs here. Good burgers! I was in the area and hungry and we found this place driving by, seeing a lot of people. I tried the Santa Fe burger with grilled onions and jalapeños. The jalapeño had some char on it and was just right to add some heat. The Barney burger with guacamole was good too. The bread was fresh and soft, everything was fresh and good quality. Great inside/outside seating arrangement and decor, solid burgers, good service. I really enjoyed the dining experience here during my recent visit and I was excited to finally try a pretzel-bun burger in particular. Food came out quickly, our waiter gave us some helpful recommendations and catered to my friend's gluten-free preferences, and everything tasted pretty good overall. I guess we're just calling anything "Gourmet" these days. The basic burger is $18 for a plain (and uninteresting) patty, a tomato, onions, and lettuce. At that price, you have to blow someone away, but this place falls short. The burger tastes like your 14 year old son made patties for the first time on the grill. It's edible, but at $18??? You expect a lot more. I also got the steak fries. These were a flabby mushy mess. The staff could not have cared less about me. I've always been a fan of Barney's with my first introduction to the one in the Marina/SF about 25 year ago...variety of burgers, chicken sandwiches, salads, "must-get" sides and shakes with vegetarian options that will keep your palate interested! My go to item is always the Alpine Burger - sautéed mushrooms, caramelized onions and Swiss medium rare...this location does it right along with those steak fries...generous portion for 1/2 order and plenty for 2 meals as it can get heavy and nap inducing! Barney's is 4.5 stars and will always stay in my (non-fast food) burger rotation as its delicious and never really had a bad item. Upgrading this to a 4-star because it is my kids' favorite place to dine, and they consistently eat all of their food. As do the adults! More than a decade after my first review, I occasionally try but still avoid the veggie burgers due to the bun problem. My husband enjoys the Impossible burger. I like the house salad--it is filled with so many goodies that it's a great deal. The soup is also in a generous bowl with two large slices of baguette. As mentioned before, it is a great place for kids--with a kids menu and kind and patient service. One of the worst burger meals I have been served in all my life. I ordered the chili, burger (medium), onions rings, and blackberry shake. First, this was the first time I had been here. Second, the place was full. Third, I looked forward to getting my food. Server was barely interested in us. She just wanted to take the order and seemed to care less what it was. The food arrived in odd intervals which made no sense. My chili and burger arrived first. Burger was well done and burnt. The chili had to be a 2 out of a ten. Canned is most likely better. My ex boss' food arrived. Then the onion rings which were worst looking and tasting ever. The fried batter was scattered all over the tray. Real nasty. Then our drinks made the table. The shake was barely edible, lumpy as if they added frozen ice cream. Kinda gross. I was so angry but couldn't express it because my ex boss brought us here. First impression is important. This place sucked even tho the inside would give a different impression. Prices are over the top. I paid $95 for garbage. I'll never return to this place again. Maybe I should have taken a picture of the food. But why would I when the food was disgusting? I choose to box half the food. And I dumped into the garbage soon as I got home. Oh, Barney's... I think that eating in-restaurant will always defeat takeout at any eatery, but especially at Barney's! So I opted to eating in my car lol. It is my new form of eating out and I honestly still don't feel too comfortable sitting in at restaurants. I ordered my fav - the Voodoo Burger with a turkey patty (sometimes Beyond or salmon patty; depending on my mood!) and replaced the bacon with avocado (not a big pork person) and was it yummy? It was OK... Was it the same quality as pre-Rona? Mmm, definitely not. But the disclosure I must share is that my first experience dining at a Barney's was in Westwood, Los Angeles. Now I know that Barney's is a local chain restaurant, which made me want to dine at a Bay Area location, however, the flavor wasn't all the way there the way it was when I had it in LA. On a brighter note, the ranch is fire here - thick, creamy, and just rich in flavor. You can really taste the dill. I usually get sweet potato fries to accompany my burger and this time was no different. I asked to sub more Voodoo sauce in place of the chipotle aioli. (Can you tell I like this stuff?) The spicy curly fries here are perfectly seasoned and come with a creamy ranch sauce that complements them well. The single/half size is more than enough for two people. The milkshakes are also very good. Very rich and creamy with so many flavors to choose from. My favorite is the blackberry chocolate. It's such a unique combination! Having tried several of their burgers, I have found them to be somewhat overcooked and dry, but they always use fresh ingredients.
