Dave's is tucked away in a little three-tenant building just south of Rt. 50. You can only turn into their parking lot coming southbound on Walney Rd. I've passed by and seen this place for the last 15-odd years but this my first try. There's not much ambiance. But the place is clean, well-lit, and there was some smooth jazz coming out of the speakers. There are about 6 tables inside. I ordered the fish sampler platter with mashed potatoes and gravy, and mac and cheese. I also ordered three jumbo chicken wings. The sampler platter came with three breaded and fried fillets. According to the menu, they were whiting, trout and "catfish (swai)". I couldn't definitively tell which was which, but I think the whiting and trout were the thinnest. One of those, perhaps the whiting, had a distinct fishy taste. What I assume to be the swai was thicker and quite mild and tasty. The batter on all three was crispy and had a bit of salt in it. I did find about three pin bones across all the pieces, so be careful. A note on swai: this is an Asian species completely different than any real catfish species. There is an FDA law that says it cannot be labeled as catfish. This is why I believe it's listed the way it is on the menu. Read up on swai and make your own determination. For me, it's tasty, and I'll probably return to Dave's in the future to get an order of just that. The fish came with a small container of tartar sauce. The mac and cheese was average. It's possibly from a box, but still good. The mashed potatoes were smooth and creamy. Also possibly from a box. But, combined with the gravy (probably from a packet mix), it brought back to me fond memories of 1980s elementary school lunches. Those mashed potatoes and gravy were the bestest! (Pizza slices sucked, but pizza boats were great; hamburgers sucked, but Salisbury steak was great.) The jumbo chicken wings were huge! Each one is the uncut whole wing -- tip, flat, and drumette. So an order of three is like ordering six regular "wings". They included a small container of their special mombo sauce, and an even smaller container of hot sauce which was very close in flavor to Crystal hot sauce. The mombo sauce was fine. It was slightly sweet, slightly spicy, but not really mouth-poppingly fantastic. The wings were super crispy and meltingly hot -- so much so that the takeout container was a bit melted and warped in some spots. No one said this was healthy. But was it good? Yeah, it was good. Eat here when your better half (and likely better eater) is out of town. Also, call your order in ahead if you can because it took a good 15 minutes to prepare. read more

Another weekday solo lunch. Wife and I are both at work, so we don't have time to meet up for lunch. Time for me to go for fried seafood without veggies getting in the way! I went to my favorite place for fried wings, but this time I changed it up a bit to try their Fried Catfish. The fries are solidly crispy on the outside and fluffy and tasty on the inside. The Mac an Cheese is warm and tasty, but I prefer a drier mac and cheese, not the saucy style they serve here. Next time, I'll go for fried rice or coleslaw as a side. came here on a whim with my mom & bebs! was not very busy when I arrived & ordered, but after, at least 4 more people came by to order. ordered a catfish sandwich for my mom & a fish sampler with mashed potatoes & gravy and mac & cheese for myself. the wait was about 20 minutes, but man, did it feel long because there's no air in this shop! they could've turned on the ceiling fans or AC as it was 100 degrees outside, but it was only barely cooler in there than outside. the food was good! the catfish was well seasoned, but not as good as the catfish at Johnny Ray's Sultry Soul Food in my opinion. the fish in my sampler had a lot of bones, so just be careful. the sandwich wasn't bad, but my mom wasn't very impressed. Am I in Baltimore? Am I in DC? Love a place that transports you to a happy place and happy tummy. Got carry out during quarantine and it was such a memorable encounter. Staff is very friendly and adhered to social distancing, proper face masks/shields, with hand sanitizer by the register. They use a basket to hand you your food and pack everything really well for transport although it was so hard not to dig in as soon as we got to the car. This place was busy! When we got there, there were two people waiting, while one guy drove up and got his carry out in jiffy bed because he had called it in. I was also impressed with how quickly they answered the phone while taking the time to explain the menu to us. It's a tiny little store tucked in a corner, with a plain sign and seemingly no real advertisement, as all the best small business food places are. This place is a hidden gem in Chantilly. One of the only places you can get a true fried seafood experience out here like you'd find in MD or the 757. The jumbo shrimp platter don't play around. I got the 3 piece fish special with hush puppies and collard greens. My husband got the seafood platter. The trout was extremely flavorful. I really enjoyed it. It was perfectly seasoned and fried with no excess oil. However, the catfish and whiting was disappointing. It lacked flavor. The collard greens were very bitter so I asked for it to be replaced with fries and it's so hard to miss with french fries. They MISSED. Terribly. The hush puppies were very delightful! Fried well and very flavorful. The "fried rice" was moist and it was the opposite of typical fried rice. They literally gave 1 scoop. Overall, it's okay. Nothing to wow over. I've eaten at Dave's multiple times but realized I've never left a review. In the past I've tried different seafood meals & their subs and the food never disappoints. A few days ago I ordered take out after not eating there in quite a while. I only ordered the 6 piece crab sticks. I'm not sure what was different this time but it wasn't as great as I remember it being in the past. The crab sticks are just a stick of imitation crab meat lightly fried. I rate this dish alone 3 stars but my overall rating of the restaurant is 4 stars because their other dishes are much better, the food is always quickly made & fairly priced and the staff is friendly. read more

THE HIDDEN GEM! I am not sure why I have not tried this place out of many many times that I have dined in Chantilly. I have not found a "good" not fancy seafood restaurant in northern Virginia but forgive me Dave's. This restaurant is located right behind the Capital One Bank Chantilly branch. The building lies along with a dry cleaner and a cabinet company. When you see a cabinet sign behind the Capital One, that's where Dave's Seafood & Sub is! It is just like ABC Canteen (I miss that place D: sigh). It is locally owned by an Asian couple. It takes a good 15 minutes (when it's not busy) to get the food. I assume that the chef cooks them when the order is placed. No precooked! The owners are really nice. Their food quality is just as great as those owners' services. I had a fish sampler platter and a scallop platter. I was very satisfied with it. The only downer that I had was scallops size but I really don't expect to get bigger and fuller scallops especially in Chantilly so I can live with it. Dave's is our favorite fried food stop. Fried fish, oysters, shrimp, and chicken wings are all over the menu. From the outside, Dave's looks like nothing special, inside as you order to go the aromas tell you right away the food is delicious. Not too spicy or salty, just good old fried southern food. We like flash fried shrimp. The fried wings are huge and yes, Dave's has DC's own mumbo sauce for the wings.
