This is a decent local joint. There are tables avail for self serve. You'll find a nice mix of sandwiches, burgers, wings and fish. You won't find any exotic type fish here, it's talapia, catfish & croaker. They do have some seafood platters with trout, salmon, shrimp, oysters and scallops. I miss takeaway mambo sauce and as far as I know, this is the only place in the area that has it. The wings are fantastic and I love the hush puppies! My fiance is a huge fan of the shrimp sandwich. You'd think that anybody could make one but you would be so wrong. I've been to so many places that overexaggerate what is just a simple sandwich and it goes so wrong so fast. They make it great here. Good soft bread, lettuce, tomato, mayo and fried shrimp. Simple and delicious! TBH, there's a few things I haven't had from their menu but I have YET to have anything that I didn't like. A great place to get a quick sub! Lots of great and unique options especially in seafood. The catfish sub was the best: great fish perfectly cooked along with no-nonsense ingredients that don't drown out the taste of the fish. You won't find sandwiches drowning in mayonnaise here. Saw they had chicken and mumbo sauce on their menu which is a DC signature so automatically I was impressed and felt like this just might be my go to spot! Got home to unwind and bit into my whiting fish and was like yes!!! I found my spot in VA! Owner is very friendly and even gave me a free mumbo sauce for being a new customer! A very pleasant surprise lunch spot. A subtle storefront in a small strip mall setting, Dave's Seafood and Subs is a yummy spot for lunch - especially if you are looking for a 'fish fry' atmosphere. I ordered the Whiting platter with fried okra and collard greens (as a southern boy this is heaven). The fish was lightly breaded and fried beautifully - serving was plentiful. Fried okra was great - light breading and tasted perfect. This is my 2nd time coming here and never really disappointed. I couldn't really decide what I wanted so I got the whiting platter with double fries (comes with two sides), a Jr cheese burger, and 3 piece jumbo wings. This is my first time trying the burger and wings. The burger is made with fresh ground beef and you can tell. It's not those frozen preformed patties. My first time here I did a walk in to go order and tried to order the wings, but they said it takes 10 to 15 minutes. I understand why...the wings are huge and need to be cooked for a while. I called ahead this this time and it was huge. Mumbo sauce is really a DC and MD thing and pretty cool that they have that here. It's essentially sweet and sour sauce. A lot of the carry out Chinese restaurants in DC and MD carry wings fries and mumbo sauce. The whiting platter was just as good as the first time... but being fried it would be better eaten there than taken home. Gets a little steamed and the batter gets a little soft by tye time I get home... but what can you expect from freshly fried food stuck in a Togo container. Fries are the general frozen crinkle cuts type, but essential for a fried fish platter. The whiting are the frozen filets that are thawed and battered in a corn meal flour which is awesome. Not fishy tasting at all. Maybe a stray bone here and there but that's to be expected. I grew up In my parents bbq restaurant in DC and they had fried fish platters on the menu and this really reminds me of it. My only complaint is the amount of tartar and hot sauce they give you. For 3 big whiting filets it's definitely not enough. total I spent about 17 dollars... the prices are reasonable. A hidden gem I want to start out by saying that I am not a seafood person. I'm not saying I don't like seafood, I'm just saying I'm more of a beef and chicken person. With that being said, Dave's Seafood is the bomb. It is a small restaurant with a huge customer base. They have a great and diverse menu, obviously most items include fish, but they do have other meals such as burgers, sandwiches, and breakfast foods. One thing I noticed about this establishment is that it is very clean and we'll kept. It is obvious the owners and employees take pride in their work and it really shows in the cleanliness and general upkeep. The employees are super friendly and are eager to help. They also work very hard cooking and preparing food; it is moderately fast considering the amount of customers that roll through. All in all, this is a legit spot and I would totally recommend it to friends, family, and coworkers. Pro tip: Call in your order about 15 minutes before you arrive so you can avoid the wait. The food is always very good, however customer service at least in my case, is consistently offensive. I always get the pork chop platter and ask for extra hot sauce, and though there's usually a lady at the counter, a guy comes from the kitchen when he sees me and says something to the lady at the counter in a different language, then gives me a dirty look, and goes back to the kitchen. Just today I ordered my favorite meal (pork chop platter) for takeout. My wife placed the order by phone and asked for extra hot sauce. When I entered the restaurant, I was greeted by a lady (who came from the back) who appeared to be frowning at me. The lady at the counter packed up my order then when it came time for the sauces, I asked for extra hot sauce. She grabbed four hot sauces as I proceeded to pay for the meal. After paying and taking my card out of the reader I looked up and there was the same gentlemen from the kitchen giving me the same dirty look as he always does. He proceeded to say something (again in a different language) to the lady at the counter. The lady at the counter then says to me "the extra hot sauce will be $1" (mind you I had just paid for the meal. By this point I was just ready to get out of there, so I put my card back into the reader once again and paid $1 for what I am not even sure was extra hot sauce being that it was only 4 little containers for three huge pork chops. Got the Trout sub with everything on it and I added ketchup/hot sauce for my personal preference . The sandwich was fantastic, fish was crispy and well seasoned. Only con I had was the bones I found in the fish. I had to pick a bone out every few bites, so I couldn't fully enjoy sandwich. This is comparing to other fried trout I had in the past where I didn't have to worry about swallowing a bone. But it's not a total deal breaker, maybe I just had a bad piece. My husband Tony and I have a major complaint that we would like to share with you all about a little takeout restaurant called "Dave's Seafood & Subs at (4008 Walney Rd, Chantilly, VA 20151 )This has been the same Asian owned establishment since we started going there. Tony & I have been going to this place off and on for over 17yrs. They have always served great fried catfish and greens, among other things. So anyway we went by there this afternoon to pickup lunch. Unfortunately this time we had issues with them. Tony kindly asked the Asian lady at the counter that took our order for some extra ketchup and napkins. She got attitude with me and sort of flipped the stuff on the counter like he was being difficult?? Tony said he blew it off for a minute. As he walked the food back to me in the truck. Tony decided he was going to discuss our displeasure with the Asian owner Dave. When Tony went back in the store he saw Dave the owner in the back area and asked him to come around to the side to talk about a problem he had. Tony had not really said a word at that point, but it appeared Dave was afraid to come and talk to Tony (The Black Man). Keep in mind that the place gets about 80% black support!! Dave didn't want to talk to Tony, he wanted Tony to talk to the lady that he was dissatisfied with so Tony did. Tony says "I talked to the lady who gave me the damn bad service in the first damn place since the owner didn't want to talk to me.... I started off by calmly explaining the situation. This lady began to start smiling and blowing me off and shit?? The owner then started to chime in with bull shit but not apologizing at all and just trying to put me off... The lady was still grinning at me and finally I blew up at both of them. I cursed the whole bunch out and the owner Dave asked me to leave which I did after I blessed them all out and reminded them we WERE long time customers but no more and we would be spreading the word on social media and everywhere we can think of). My boyfriend and I have been coming to Dave's Seafood for about a year now. We have enjoyed it every time. We would usually get the cheese burger, salmon, mac and cheese, fries, or a sub. We hadn't been there in a couples months so today we decided to make a pick up order. My boyfriend decided to try something new and order the mozzarella sticks. So as we are eating, we first take out the little tray of mozzarella sticks and the marinara sauce. My boyfriend says while he was eating one of the mozzarella sticks that he dipped into the marinara sauce, he felt something in the midst of chewing, something that felt not easily chewable. He thought maybe it was an onion, so he proceeded to take it out of his mouth and held it up to the light. What we saw was a yellow, thick, rough textured, piece of what looked like ripped off skin almost the size of a pinky nail. It even had the little lines on it as if it were part of a finger print or the skin lines that appear on dead skin. We don't know if it was the marinara sauce or the mozzarella sticks. We are disgusted. We never had issues with Dave's Seafood. However, my boyfriend says that when he went there today it was a different lady that he had never seen at the front and he said she portrayed herself as not being clean. ...All we know is, right now my boyfriend is afraid to even eat the rest of the food. Wow, I was really blown away by this place. A coworker had been telling me about it for weeks and we finally went in. I would highly recommend going if you love fried seafood. It is not greasy, the breading is on point and their team, fresh brewed tea, is perfectly sweetened. The collard greens were good so I'm glad about that. I also ordered a side of gizzards. That was my main mistake. They do not know how to cook gizzards at this restaurant. They were so chewy I actually couldn't eat them. I'm not just being dramatic like I couldn't chew them small enough to where I could swallow the food comfortably. I decided to give this place a try for dinner last night and I loved the food! I wasn't in the mood for seafood, so I tried the Philly cheesesteak sub and fried chicken wings with mumbo sauce... DELICIOUS. I grew up in Maryland where many places had yummy chicken with mumbo sauce, but now I found the next runner up. Note: If you are in a rush try to call in the chicken wings ahead of time since there is the usual 8-15 minute waiting period (also considering if they are busy). Customer service: The lady at the register was nice and reminded us that if we add $2.39, we could get a medium 24oz. drink and fries. I wasn't paying attention and got a drink from the fridge and didn't get my "money's worth." No biggie, but just a tip. Atmosphere: I gave this place a four star because I find it important to enjoy the restaurant environment/appearance. There is limited seating and the space could use some updating to draw in more customers that aren't familiar with the positive Yelp reviews. Better tables/chairs, a pop of wall color, or something to make it unique and comfy. The bathrooms were clean and had a lot of air fresheners, so that's a plus. First time here and came for lunch.. it was okay. The staff were friendly and welcoming and the menu never ends. So many options it took me a while to decide what to get. I did a walk in order and it took about 20-25 minutes for the food to get to me but I don't mind waiting for fresh cooked food. It is a smaller size building with limited seating so I wasn't surprised with how busy and packed it got. I got the fish sampler (1 Whiting, 1 Trout, 1 Catfish with 2 sides) and I had a bite of my coworkers tilapia; all fried fish. Again the fish was cooked to order and was cooked perfectly. The trout and tilapia were delicious but I wasn't all that excited about the whiting and catfish. Don't get me wrong the whiting and catfish were good, but just not for me. As for the sides I got an order of mashed potatoes and green beans.. definitely NOT getting those again. Both sides were bland and you could tell the green beans were canned and the mashed potatoes were pre-packaged. The potatoes just had a chemical taste to them, not sure what that was all about. Next time I go I will have to try the fried chicken wings. A few people around us got it and it looked and smelled pretty darn good. Hopefully the other sides won't taste as bad. read more
