We discovered the Bitter Monk through a friend who lives locally. At his recommendation, we visited for the first time about a year ago. This weekend was the third time we've returned. This weekend they were hosting the Wonderland Brew Fest. Live music, at least 30 different brews to chose from, wonderful local pretzel vendor, and a food truck! Absolute heaven! McMinnville is a little piece of heaven just south of Portland... The Bitter Monk makes it just a little more perfect! If you're ever nearby, stop in and enjoy a lovely brew. I had two beers from ForeLand and both were very solid! Probably my favorite was the Glass Volcano, a dark lager with a great roasty, coffee flavor with a bit of sweetness. It then has a clean finish which contributed to a very enjoyable lager overall. Mesmeric Gaze was the next beer Steve and I enjoyed. It was an IPA with very fine flavors of pine and citrus generating a slightly tropical reminder. One of the better IPA'S I have had in the last month or so. Definitely a rewarding beer experience with this brewery and a worthy stop to make regardless if UFO's are involved or not.

Unfortunately, the way we were treated made us feel anything but welcome. Our 3-year-old was playing with the toy bin they provide for kids inside, while we were mainly gathered outside. Like any toddler, he made a mess, but I was mindful of it and cleaned up after him when asked. About 15-20 minutes later, I noticed the entire toy bin had been removed. When I asked the staff member (manager?) why, her response was curt and dismissive--essentially saying she was tired of cleaning up after kids. She even said she "had kids too," but the tone felt more like scolding than understanding. I explained that we come to places like this because they advertise themselves as family-friendly. Instead of hospitality, we were made to feel like a burden, as though children weren't actually welcome. The worst part was overhearing her continue to talk about us to others while we were still there. That crossed the line from unprofessional to just plain rude. We ended up leaving and taking our business elsewhere. For parents constantly searching for places to enjoy a beer while their kids have space to play, I can confidently say Heater Allen is not it. If you don't want children there, don't advertise as kid-friendly--it's misleading and creates an experience that feels hostile for families.
