Edison's Pizza Kitchen available at this location! I visited his Dave's Super Market several times. It's located in Ohio City. It's a very convenient location to browse after checking out West 25th or the West Side Market. Parking lot here is for customers only. The store draws some loitering outside. Pizza: During my latest visit, a lady in the parking lot asked me if there's a pizza place inside this Dave's. I had no idea. Now I know - yes! There is a pizza place (Edison's Pizza Kitchen) right next to the bakery. You can get whole pies, slices, strombolis, calzones, and breads. You can pre-order via Toast. While in this part of the store, check out breads. One of the most notable items sold - bread from Stone Oven Bakery (best in bread!) Store: The store is sparkling clean, well stocked, organized, and spacious. Inventory is extensive. There is liquor store inside even with options like Pickle Vodka! Prices are pretty average. I picked up a pack of High Noons (discounted). Produce section looked really good - fresh and vibrant looking fruit! First time coming here wanted to check out a grocery store since I was in the Cleveland area. Place had my energy drinks that I was looking for prior to looking of this location, I've been to the area before mainly to visit the West Side Market and the surrounding businesses so I figured that this place will be worth checking out. Overall it was an average grocery store experience, I found exactly what I was looking for with no issues. It's a little bit pricey compared to other grocery stores but overall I left satisfied. My main issue with the store was primarily the self checkout. It took me 5 minutes to check out a few items because I was fighting with the machine about how to pay with my car staff was mostly friendly. His place was pretty well packed for 8:00 in the morning. This review is for the prepared foods section, in particular, the sub sandwiches. At 5.99, these sandwiches are a great value and very tasty. I got the turkey special, which has turkey and bacon. I'm done with Dave's. I went to the hot food section as I frequently do to buy a chicken dinner. A 3 piece is $7.99 and a 2 piece is $6.99. I bought a 2 piece and I went to check out I noticed they were charging me $7.99 I called this out to the cashier and was told I had to pay $7.99 for the 2 piece. I told them to keep it and walked out. I refuse to let Dave's cheat me out of a dollar. This was a low class move by Dave's and I'll shop elsewhere from now on. Awesome parking lot! Big enough to accommodate a bunch of grocery shoppers! The only thing that is annoying is that people don't seem to know how to open their car doors without banging into your car. Other than that, I like the fact that they have options to pick out what you want for lunch. I never ate their salad there but their fried chicken is nice and crispy on the outside and soft and moist on the inside! You can also add some sides to your main course like Jojo's or macaroni and cheese. I don't really grocery shop here because I like going to other places for bulk items. (Just my preference) I do enjoy their hot/warm lunches around noon and I just heard that they now have options for people to get gyros! Hopefully the next time I come here, I can try that! read more

Great service here and their selection of alcohol is nice since they have liquor and beer. The groceries on the other hand seem to go bad quickly, especially their vegetables(I bought celery and within 5 day a of being in my fridge it went bad, same with onions). And yes they have a private parking lot which is a plus since parking is a huge pain in downtown Cleveland. But their parking lot gsurd can be a pain sometimes and ask if you are going into the store. Anyways if they fix their vegetables issue then ill update my review as the place is otherwise clean and has a good selection of products. read more

The store in Ohio city is a cool little throwback with a lot of selection that you would not expect. I didn't shop much but it looked like it had pretty much everything you would need. Minus one star for the parking lot Nazi who was literally aggressively challenging people who are trying to park to shop. The prices seem to be about average for the area and all the produce looked quite fresh. It had been a few years since I stopped into this Daves. I had heard that it was remodeled and upgraded, but I still was feeling slighted by some bad produce experiences, so I hadn't journeyed here in a while. But my, have things changed. I was in a time crunch and needed a few things, so, voila, enter Daves. Overall, you can physically see the upgraded changes here. It's more expansive than I remember, has more modern accents, better-looking produce, and a better sense of organization and cleanliness. As Gee K pointed out, they also have a parking lot for customers only, which is really nice in an urban environment. Some things still aren't perfect here, but is any place perfect? The various crowds that roll through here can be very interesting, so just be alert to the high volume of people around you. As far as the store goes, they also have a better wine section then I remember and a bulk section that had tons of healthy snacks. I realized I've never been to a Dave's and I've lived so close to one for like 10yrs. Lol. First of way too expensive. The prices here are like 1-1.50 more than at Giant eagle. The bakery is nice, I was there on a Saturday so a lot of things were sold out and nothing was replaced so I'm assuming this is there busy time. So the first check out I see is self checkout. Worst experience with one of these machines. Giant eagle and target have them and I'm in and out. This one is ridiculous. The lady had to come over 4 separate times to scan her card to quiet the blinking siren thingy. She didn't seem surprised at all either. I have two stars bc they have a pretty good salad bar and there's parking. I wish there was an Aldi here instead. read more

By the time we decided to do a cookout and make a list of things we needed to buy when we were at West Side Market, all of the bakery stalls were out of hamburger buns. Thankfully, Dave's is just down the street (and in route towards my friends' house) so we popped in for some last minute items. When we reached the bakery section, we found they were too out of rolls! I popped my head around the bakery case and noticed they had some freshly baked rolls sitting on a tray. All we had to do was ask and they bagged them up for us. Sweet! We also picked up some semi-soft cheeses and crackers, (yes, more cheese) to snack on while we prepared dinner. We bought a spreadable gorgonzola and a 4-pepper chevre which were both awesome. The gorgonzola was my favorite of the two and I could have eaten the whole container by myself. I love Dave's. LOVE. Why? Because they are the only effing grocery store that dares go into the city of Cleveland. This one is in Ohio City, ok. But Dave's is the only grocery store you see in Slavic Village, St. Clair Superior, Central, Collinwood. So, even with its problems, of which I don't see many (I've had bad experiences with produce from a lot of stores), it's dedication to serving in low-income neighborhoods rocks and they should be credited. People in Cleveland love to talk about what a problem food deserts are in the city, yet they drive to Rocky River for their groceries. Cleveland has one of the lowest average incomes in the nation, some of the highest crime, and a shrinking population. Wise up. Stop expecting Beverly Hills. The homeless and other of life's drop outs are in Dave's parking lot as well as on benches at West 117th and Clifton. This is their city too. Cleveland is one of the fattest towns yet from the yelp reviews it is highly populated with nutritionists who note all the bad foods available yet brag over how much beer or coffee they drink with their grilled cheese and poutine followed by Jeni's ice cream. How can Dave's ever satisfy those who have such contradictory values? Why blame Dave's for having people in its lot or premises that scare the fearful? Rather applaud the only store to make the city its home. Of course it must sell products for those with differing tastes or tight budgets no matter who believes only what is on her list matters. Dave's does the perfect job of satisfying its widely diverse shoppers. Buy pig ears or granola here. I have never found the vegetables to be as bad as others report. The herbs and tropical produce are cheaper and more plentiful then elsewhere why pass them by for leaf lettuce and apples? I come here more than any other store and no one who has ever eaten at my table has complained over the poor quality of my food. I look for what is good here. At Dave's I can find meats that those of us who favor folk cooking want. This is the best place for the meats that chefs are beginning to use. Pork shoulders, briskets, smoked meats and, tho I am not a fan, offal pack the meat trays. I find here Orlando's English muffins, Portuguese rolls, and fideo noodles not carried elsewhere. I attempt to spend my money where it does the most for my city and if it means having a cucumber with a soft spot, so be it. read more

+1 for location/proximity to where I live (less than a 5 minute drive). -2 for an overcrowded, claustrophobic parking lot where I feel like I am going to hit a person or car/GET hit by a person or car every time I am there. +3 for mostly everything you need. -1 for those few "gourmet" items you might not find here. +1 for mostly good prices and for it being a little less hectic than going to the West Side Market. -3 for the guilt you feel over NOT going to the West Side Market when you so easily could have. +2 for the organic section. -5 for the clusterfuck of a deli counter. +4 for the music they play (not kidding! I love it!). -4 for the homeless, smelly guys singing along with you. +2 for the usually competent, adequately friendly cashiers. -5 for not being able to take your cart to your car, and, if you're there alone, having to decide between leaving your stuff with "a guy" while you drive the car around (dodging 3 families in the process), or tipping said guy to help you bring it to your car. +6 for the time I schlepped out to Whole Foods (an experience I detest; more on that later) and they were out of corn syrup and I drove right over to Dave's, and there it was, as it should be, in all its sickly-sweet glory. I hate to say it, but if I need to do a shopping trip that's bigger than two bags' worth, or if I am looking for something special, OR if I want to get my deli meat without a written permit and 20 extra minutes of standing "in line," I am probably going to go to Giant Eagle. This grocery store ranks with any excellent store. The choices are especially good. They have choice fish and chicken along with terrific fruit and produce. Service is good and parking is plentiful. So I just half-moved to Ohio City after half-living for a year in Parma. Long story short I live half in Columbus and half in Cleveland due to grad school. Anyway, I wish I would have half-lived in this neighborhood the whole time!! I finally decided to venture into Dave's today, and am happy I did! You should note, I have yet to go to the West Side Market - please don't judge. Anyway, some of the prices are too pricey but a lot of them are very reasonable!! The produce all looked great and was competitive with Giant Eagle on price. I guess the thing that tipped the scales from a 3 to a 4 star for me was that I found a "tostonera" in the Goya aisle! My fiance and I were just recently fretting over how to make really good fried plantains, like we had in several Puerto Rican restaurants. The tonstonera is basically a plaintain squasher which (hopefully) does just that!! So I added another gadget to the kitchen, and had a good ol' time at Dave's. read more

She explained that it seemed like there were a lot of strung-out, homeless people wandering about Dave's. I like Dave's. There, I said it. They really have come a long way since I first started shopping here. Some of my favorite updates recently would be their produce selection. They really are starting to expand it, a little. The quality can be lacking, but it mostly depends on when you go. If you're there later during some parts of the week, the worst produce will be left--but that makes sense, know doesn't it? That's why it's important to learn how to shop at Dave's. But I digress... They have cheap spaghetti squash! Yes!! They have Greek yogurt, an organics section with quinoa (finally, although expensive as hell), and their International selection has items I haven't even found at Giant Eagle. They also have these little bubbly, zero calorie drinks I can't find anywhere else. And lots of other items, like San Marzano tomatoes, etc. It's close, their selection is growing, it's my neighborhood market and I love it! read more

I moved to the area from the suburbs 18 months ago. In that time Dave's has put millions into the store to upgrade. It is becoming a great store. I couldn't be more pleased with the staff. (Dave the store manager is great) I recently purchased cases of wine and beer for a party I'm having. The selection is great (not always so in the past) Dave's has been upgrading what they carry. A good friend of mine now supplies the cheese department. They now handle what you would find in the upscale grocery stores in the suburbs. If you haven't shopped there recently, you really should. Seriously, WHAT do they do to their produce? It's always bruised and/or moldy and it goes bad quickly. It's just downright awful. Loss of another star for not keeping their ice cream in check. More often than not, I get ice cream that has been melted and re-frozen into that gritty ice cream. Plus, I dare you to try to find the flavor you're looking for without having to dive into the freezer head first. Then again, on a warm summer day dive away! And yet, I find myself here again. Mostly every week. It's so convenient; odds are if you're in Ohio City you can walk here. Their frozen goods, dairy and regular cereal-type items are standard. They have beer and wine with Sunday sales. Generally, their staff is pretty nice and will indulge you in a friendly chat at the register. If/when you go, just know the following things: pick your produce carefully. Drive slowly through the parking lot. Do not buy the ice cream. Last but not least, DO engage the staff and relish in how convenient the location is! read more

Daves is really my love hate relationship. I ADORE having a food store this large in selection (can foods) within a few blocks of my house. I LOVE that they have a relatively good selection of meats, breads, canned goods. I LOVE that they are open when the market is not (because i can only get to the market on fridays and weekends- work schedule). I hate the costumer service i have gotten there EVERY single time. Especially in the Deli- prepare to wait a LONG time. I HATE that they have prices that are MUCH HIGHER THEN the west side market, the Athens Stores right around the bend and MUCH higher then anywhere else in the city. I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HOW CRUMMY, and OLD, and CRAPPY their produce is. its A given that everything you buy will go bad VERY soon- much sooner then it should. Even within few days- and that is hard for someone who LOVES to cook Fresh. They hold produce and fruit, on the shelf passed when most stores would not. i have been so upset by the veggies and fruits that i have bought there, i actually started driving 20 mins down 90 to get to the Giant Eagle where EVERYTHING is cheaper, and FRESH IS FRESH. I feel unsafe shopping here. I can't tell you how many times I've been whistled at, called at, or hit on in this store or right outside of it. I hate coming here because I know I will be so uncomfortable the whole time and leave upset. The prices here are also out of control. The store is dirty, the selection is incredibly limited, and the staff is all unfriendly teenagers. How they get away with charging what they do is beyond me. It does sound like Daves is trying to improve by renovating and offering a wider variety of healthy, more upscale products. They carry all GLBC beers and lots of others. They have a hippie secion in the front for all the fancy people. Dave's was the local normal supermarket we came to when I was a volunteer in Cleveland. We got some stuff from the Lakewood Marc's (yuck) and the Farmer's Market (yum) and some other places, but Dave's was where we got the regular stuff. When I lived in Ohio City, it was just starting to gentrify (yuck). But I think they brought this place in because the local neighborhood didn't have a real supermarket. It's a good supermarket as far as supermarkets go. It's very clean, and the people who work here are nice. It always felt a little out of place, but I can't really tell you why so I won't hold that against Dave's. read more

I'm going to not mention the fact that my wallet was stolen out of my purse a few years ago. I blame that Cleveland Heights woman, not Daves. Dave's manager and security were actually very helpful in the eventual return of my wallet (two weeks later when they found it behind some Nilla cookies) What I am going to mention is that this is a great location for ethnic eats and cheap meats.
