Wow, what an amazing place, I've been coming to Bozeman for 15 years and never been here before. What a mistake. I should have been coming here all along. Great sushi! I wasn't going to leave a review after my horrific experience but since it's been 2.5 weeks and my husbands card still hasn't been credited back I've got no choice. My husband and I were visiting from out of town. He really wanted Dave's Sushi because it was his favorite place when he lived in Bozeman. He placed an order online and I came down to pick it up. Upon arrival I checked in with the hostess up front. She sent me around back to wait for my order. I waited for a bit and was told that I had already picked up my order. I told the lady that it was impossible because I've been here for 15 minutes already. She said oh well we have away your order and said it was going to be another 20-30 minutes to remake it. At that point I became annoyed that my order wasn't getting remade first. Another customer started yelling at me saying I was out of line. As I waited for the food the lady came back out and said the manager said he isn't going to charge you. Mind you I NEVER asked for a refund just the food. Once the food is finally ready that same customer says here let me give you an extra tip on behalf of her. My husband already left a tip since he ordered online. The entire experience was unbelievable and doubtful we will be coming back next time we are in town. I don't care about the refund but if you say your going to not charge me then actually process the refund. read more

Dave's is not that good. Every time I've been here, the service was abysmal. Everything takes forever, even when the place is half full. It will take forever to be seated, your water glass will be empty always, and the sushi will take an age to get out to your table. I was there with a group once who, after finishing the first round of sushi, were still hungry and decided to order more. The waitress gave us a stern warning that we should have ordered everything when we sat down because it was going to take a long time for the order to go through. Gee, thanks for letting us know, lady. The sushi is not really good either. I get that Bozeman is like 650 miles from the ocean, but everything just seems to be about the same quality as the sushi you can get from Rosauer's grocery store in the plastic boxes. It's just really...mediocre. I think this place is more about the image of eating sushi than the actual sushi. We have been to Dave's multiple times over the years, but unfortunately it's usually because it is the only sushi option. We live about 75 miles from Bozeman so when you make a trip to town, sometimes you take what you can get. The sushi itself is not bad, nothing to write home about but definitely edible and they have some great specialty rolls. I have never had nigiri or sashimi though, because of the next comment.... ...Every time we have been there in the past several years, it smells very strongly of fish. Yes, I understand that you need fish for sushi, but it is much more than makes one comfortable. I worked in a sushi restaurant and never noticed a fishy smell, and also shop at the seafood market that supplies Dave's and not nearly the same smell there either. So, I usually go with cooked rolls and save the raw stuff for when I'm in Denver. Lastly, the service is always sub par. On our most recent visit (last Friday) we had a very friendly server who was great once we got past getting water (almost 10 min after being seated before anyone came over) but all of our food took far too long. We were there over an hour for a lunch of 2 rolls, edamame and some miso in a half full restaurant. I'm pretty forgiving when it's busy, but I saw no signs of trying for quick service from anyone. This has become the norm on our visits for the past 2-3 years. I will still go back since the rolls are decent and a girl needs a sushi fix once in awhile, but will probably steer towards take out from now on. Dave's is a dirt-bag sushi joint to be sure. The wait staff is usually drunk (or high--it's hard to be sure which). Your service will be bad, but the sushi is usually good (surprisingly good, given Bozeman's proximity to the nearest ocean). Last time I went, my group waited until 8:00 pm to be seated for a 7:15 pm reservation. Your best bet is to order carry-out and enjoy Dave's at home. Order early, though--you'll sometimes wait better than an hour for a few rolls for carry-out. If you love sushi, you'll no doubt put up with the service and enjoy Dave's nonetheless. read more

We were four heading to Dave's at about 7:30pm. There was a wait and since we were less than 5 we could not make a reservation. This meant that we had to wait for 30 minutes to be seated. Popular place, prime dinner time, that wasn't too bad. We ordered the Thai-style Scallop Bowl (noodles), Temporary Insanity roll, and Fried Chicken Roll. Thai-style Scallop Bowl This was probably the biggest disappointment of the night. $10 for what is essentially a very small bowl of mostly noodles with some spices and a few small pieces of tempura scallops. We got this thinking my wife and I would split it, but the portion was much more in line with what we'd expect from an appetizer rather than a entree. Considering it was mostly noodles, which are very cheap to make, we really felt like the dish was a rip-off. It's harsh to say but when we first saw it our reaction was "$10 for this?!" Fried Chicken Roll Pretty tasty and fun to try although it was a bit heavy (obviously). I don't think I'd get it again but it was a neat thing to try out. Temporary Insanity Roll We were again surprised by how small the roll was considering it costs $12.50. The flavoring was okay and the wasabi included in the roll was a nice touch. Overall it was an average roll, nothing that blew me away but was fairly classic sushi roll. Overall Pro: decent place Pro: good drink selection Con: priced too high for what you get. The portions are all very small for what you're paying. Con: Flavor was okay. Nothing tremendous. We live in Bozeman and have been to Dave's many times. There's always a wait. We know that. We get it. This time I went in, put my name in for a party of 6. The long curly haired dude at the stand repeated it and I gave him my number for the text alert. Expect a 20-30 minute wait he says. Ok no problem. 30 minutes later I roll in, just checking. Different hostess looks confused. No one by my name on the list. I show my confirmation text. "Oh no, we got you mixed with another of the same name". Not sure how that could be, given the whole text to table technology. It's going to be another 20-30 minutes. Then I'm told my name was put in for 2 people, not 6, oh then it changed to 3, and then 6. Same dude who took my name in the first place comes out and says to me, " I don't know if it's on you or on us, but we didn't have the right number of people down. You'll have to wait another 30. " Outside. In the rain. Yeah, the signs inside say that one party can wait inside, but never mind that. Just a word of advice, my man: When you enter the party information on your system, take down my number and repeat back to me "party of 6", IT'S ON YOU. We went straight over to Seven Sushi and had a great dinner. I'm a reasonable man and can forgive a lot. I would not be writing this and would probably go back to Dave's if dude had just apologized or acknowledged a mistake. I don't think I'll ever be back. At east not for a long while. read more

Loved this place. I travel a lot for business and I've had some incredible sushi, this place ranks close to the top. Fish is flown in from Hawaii daily, and you could tell!! Very fresh and large cuts of meat on the Nigiri. Staff was great and helped me with a couple rolls when I couldn't decide. I'm not a deep fried roll guy but everybody was saying "The Gobbler" was the local favorite. I had Albacore and salmon Nigiri both were incredible. I've been to dave's so many times, but my most recent visit was so amazing I want to tell people about it. First of all, our server was attentive without being annoying, incredibly fast, friendly, and has excellent suggestions. But the real star of the evening was the chef's choice roll. We said we wanted cream cheese, mango, and ahi, and the chef crafted the most delicious roll I've ever eaten. The fish is fresh, the atmosphere is relaxed and fun, and not overpriced. There's two places to eat sushi in Bozeman and of them Dave's sushi will always be my choice. The menu is surprisingly full and the freshness of the fish is equally impressive. The atmosphere is very comfortable, it is easy to feel at home there. Prices are good for cheap or full budget meals. Love the specialty rolls. Vegetable rolls are great for those not into fish.
