From the very first consultation with Dr. Mehr, I knew this was the right place for my daughter's orthodontic care. Both Dr. Mehr and Dr. Panos are knowledgeable, personable, and incredibly thorough. Both doctors take the time to explain each step of the treatment plan, show the progress being made, and make parents and patients feel informed and comfortable. Their genuine care and attention to detail are clear in every visit. While we did see Dr. Davoody once, and he was okay, he didn't quite have the same warmth or personal connection that Dr. Mehr and Dr. Panos consistently bring to their interactions. We came to this practice after a disappointing experience with another orthodontist in Houston. I had already paid in full, and my daughter was fitted with an expander that she wore for about a year and a half. I diligently followed the instructions, turning the key as instructed, and we attended all recommended check-ups. Then, one day, the expander--and the teeth it was attached to--came out entirely. I was concerned and immediately contacted an orthodontist friend in another state, who confirmed that this should not have happened. He advised us to see another orthodontist. Fortunately, the teeth that were extracted were baby teeth, but I didn't feel comfortable bringing my daughter back to that practice after that. That led us to Dr. Mehr at Greater Houston Orthodontics. From the front desk staff to the assistants and doctors, everyone has been kind, helpful, and supportive throughout the entire process. My daughter feels at ease during visits, and I feel confident that she is in excellent hands.

It turns out I needed quite a bit of work done on a variety of teeths in the molar quadrant of both sides of my lower mouth. Currently I am about halfway through this journey, but I can assure the dear reader that your humble narrator is feeling quite at ease with the treatment being provided to poor tooth 19. The staff are nice and knowledgeable, the office has a calming atmosphere, and that Netflix yo... When I was reclined back in my chair and handed the remote control, thus giving me the awesome responsibility of choosing a flick to take in while my mouth got drilled, I took the task seriously. They printed out a full quote for everything that I need done that was easy to read and understand as well as gave me a referral to a trusted oral surgeon. Then the dental hygienist came in and informed me that based on his review of my X-rays I needed a deep clean to remove some buildup under my gums (which he specifically said is not a new problem) but he'd be willing to do a medium deep clean. The insurance specialist informed me it would cost over $300, out of pocket. To be clear, I go to the dentist every 6 months and have my entire life. I brush twice a day and floss daily. The dentist today had no concerns about my teeth after reviewing my X-rays. No dentist (or dental hygienist) has ever recommended a deep clean before. And I was told this is "not a new problem." I declined the medium deep cleaning, the hygienist refused to do a regular cleaning and I left. The whole experience felt very scammy. And I still need to get my teeth cleaned.

One thing they don't tell you about orthodontics is that your face shape changes! My face got more narrow and my jaw became a little smaller. I was very pleased seeing the before and after. I recommend Invisalign even if your teeth appear straight because bite changes will result in structural face changes as well! The office is well staffed, emails are replied to quickly, and Dr. Tabakman is very thorough and comes up with a good plan. He will tell you how much time you need and as with all Invisalign providers, there are always refinements. This is not a negative to the office, but it is the drawback to using Invisalign since the trays are predicted 24 months in advance. Your teeth are stronger than the plastic trays so don't expect it to perfectly match to the forecast or what the trays look like! Houston Orthodontic Specialists has good discounts depending on the time of the year. In 2021, I paid 4.5k for 24 months of Invisalign (refiners extended it by 6 months, with no charge). It came with a retainer included in the package.

At one point, my wires were left cut for several weeks until I advocated for them to be reconnected, which caused unwanted tooth movement and new gaps that were not present prior to surgery. When I requested a copy of my treatment plan and records, as is my right under HIPAA, the staff initially tried to charge me for access to my own medical notes. Only after I referenced HIPAA regulations did they provide the documents without further issue. When I scheduled a meeting with the office manager to express my concerns, her disposition became extremely defensive and unprofessional, and security was called without justification. During a later visit, I also had an uncomfortable encounter with Dr. Brown that left me feeling unsafe. Overall, I found the lack of communication, professionalism, and respect for patient rights very concerning. I strongly recommend that this office receive additional training in HIPAA compliance and patient care communication.

We were very concerned about the price, the process and most importantly, finding the right orthodontist. From our very first interaction, Dr. Heather Brown and her awesome staff were extremely kind, courteous and professional. Our initial consultation was thorough and provided us all of the information we needed for our daughter's road to a perfect smile. We did experience a few bumps along the way (solely due to our daughter NOT fully adhering to the instructions provided), but even in those moments, Dr. Brown and staff were extremely understanding and provided our daughter with kind direction on how to stay on track. Since the procedure required special equipment, they warned me it might take a while. I initially agreed to this, but because of supplier complications and also a scheduling conflict it ended up being about six months before my actual braces procedure. By that time, I felt uneasy, especially since I had only met the orthodontist once, half a year prior. I canceled the appointment and decided against the braces, but the wrap-up process was extremely frustrating. It was hard to reach an actual person in the office, and I had to keep leaving voice messages or sending texts. Then they would get back to me at their convenience. Even though I had to pay for the custom mouthpiece that had been made, it was still a relief to end the relationship and not have to deal with the communication issues for the long period of time that braces would have taken.
