I had a baby last year and decided I wanted to do something fun with my hair. I chose pink highlights with the stipulation that regrowth needed to be easy as I couldn't come back soon, and I needed to be able to pull it back. I went to a stylist friend, and it was kind of a disaster. Basically it looked liked I had massively grown out roots when I pulled it back, and the cut was full of "holes". I decided I needed to get it fixed and chose David Ryan based on photos on yelp. Glad I did! Saw Madion for a quick consultation, and he thought of ideas to soften the line and improve grow out. The color had also started washing out to yellow after a week. He used a pink shampoo to bring back the color. My roots no longer look unintentional, but give it a more sophisticated fade out. He also corrected the cut keeping as much as he could so I can still pull it back. The real test... Haven't been to see anyone except my stylist in Atlanta for 12 years. Due to work reasons, couldn't get back to see him, so had to take a chance on a new salon. This place is absolutely amazing! I had such a hard time explaining my cut and color because I usually just let my friend handle it -- they were so patient, poor Wyatt I had to explain my hair was like 2 months without cut or color because of travel so wasn't a good look for what I normally have. She was the first (and only) stylist I visited when I moved to NYC last year (based on lots earlier positive Yelp reviews), and she's been a godsend. Hey Guys, I get my hair trimmed and cut by this fantastic hairdresser named Pablo and I'm a regular and here's why. So the salon itself is clean, beautiful, and visually appealing. It's very visible from the outside so very easy to find not like other hole in the wall salons or barbershops. I've always been greeted immediately as I walk through the door and the staff is genuinely friendly and helpful. They are consistently on schedule, I've never waited for more than a minute for my appointment. Truth. Now, to Pablo. He's such a great listener when it comes to getting what you want. He was super helpful in achieving the look(s) that I wanted and made sure to round out any edges to make my sure I look as great as possible. I'm an actor so this unfortunately IS something I do have to maintain and keep in mind which Pablo relieves me of because I always feel so confident when my hair cut is done. He is bilingual and speaks English and Spanish (Like me *cough*cough) so it's a wonderful to have more options of explaining my look in two languages. I went in on a whim and booked an appointment after having been disappointed with the latest color applied to my hair at a hair salon that I'd been loyally going to for the last five years. James took a quick look at my hair and after a breezy consultation, he understood exactly what it was I wanted done- he was able to accommodate my schedule and even stayed late to make my hair the best it could be- and let me tell you, this is the best, most natural looking yet brilliant color I've had in memory! I finally feel like the version of myself I've been wanting to get back to, I feel glamorous and 10 years younger, have been getting compliments from everyone and have been walking around with the biggest boost in confidence all week. Service for me is a big thing because I would hope that when it comes to my hair, it's in good hands. I've had my hair butchered in the past because my hair is thick and long so it's hard for me to get what I need since it seems that many places just want to get you in and out as soon as possible. I've stopped by once before almost a year ago and the environment was comfortable and friendly. However I called today hoping to see if there were any spots available and if not, later in the week, but to my surprise before I was able to finish asking if there were any appointments available today, I was cut of with a blunt "no." I would have asked for a later appointment had they suggested other times, but I was turned off by the quick and immediate response that shows a lack of care and interest. To rate my last experience, the cut and color was was definitely a solid 4 stars, they were quick to get me an appointment and the service was okay, but today made me weary about returning. Maybe the staff is different or they're just busy today so in the mean time I will be going elsewhere. read more

Edited my review to say that a week after the cut, I'm not impressed, especially for the $$$ I spent on cut, full highlights and gloss (nearly $650 and that is including tip). I had a single color, Balayage, and a hair cut done by Markell. He is such an artist! I have never shown a hairstylist a color and could get my hair to exactly the color I wanted, I have thick middle eastern hair, and they always blame it on my hair. Markell, however, was able to get my hair to mushroom brown precisely as I wanted it! He took the time to cut my hair and taught me a lot about how to take care of my hair after the process. When my stylist, Robert, left West Vibe Salon, I selfishly prayed that he would land at David Ryan. Mind you, I didn't know anything about the place; it was one of the handfuls of hair studios I passed on my way to West Vibe. However, I am a creature of habit and the thought of changing my bi-weekly hair routine gave me anxiety. As the hair gods would have it, Robert started at David Ryan faster than I could say blowout! When I walked in for my first appointment, I was greeted with warmth and genuine kindness. Madion, the salon manager, was not only upbeat and professional, but he was HILARIOUS! (After seven months of coming to David Ryan, not an appointment has gone by where I'm not laughing. The dynamics between Madion, Robert, and Ruthy, another West Vibe transfer, is priceless!) Another thing I'd like to note... one of the co-owners can sometimes be found buzzing around the salon, lending a hand where one is needed. He is friendly, passionate, and oh so humble. After meeting him, it made perfect sense to me why I love the energy of the salon. He and his wife set the tone: Good Vibes Only. Besides the people, I really love the space itself. As a developer in NYC construction, it's obvious to me that whomever designed the space knew every nook and cranny. There is no awkwardness in the layout and no detail was an afterthought. The design considers aesthetics, but more importantly, it provides the stylists space to work their magic! Imagine how relaxing it is to get your hair done when personal space is maintained! Finally, David Ryan's products are everything! My personal favorite is Davines. Every Davines potion Robert has used on my color treated hair has brought back moisture and shine. I did hear from Ruthy a couple of weeks later. To her credit, she left me an apologetic voicemail and it did seem that she felt bad. She is clearly a talented stylist and I would have loved to make her my regular person, but I couldn't move past this incident to re-engage. I did not hear from anyone else at the salon again and do not plan to use their service in the future obviously. I'm making my follow up two stars rather than one as the first day of service was really very good and I did ultimately hear back from all parties, which to me shows integrity in owning the mistake and that counts for something. read more

Madion, the manager, has cut my eleven year old's hair now for a couple of years. My son looks forward to our trips to the salon a great deal - less for the hair cut (though he always tells me he "feels so handsome" after) but because Marion is so kind to him. He asks him questions about school, about what he's reading on interested in and then listens as my son chatters endlessly about his topic. Madion is that amazing kind of professional who makes his clients feel seen and heard, regardless of their age or interests. I admit sometimes taking so small son "to the salon" feels ridiculous - but I can't imagine a better experience for him. Pablo was my stylist and he was awesome! I had a consultation with him a month earlier where he even tested some bleach and toner on a piece of my hair. The only reason I went to this place was because I work around the corner and was able to pop over on my lunch break. I had been growing my hair out for months so that I would have a blank canvas for the perfect bob, and I was really excited. When the receptionist scheduled my appointment, he made a big deal about how Veronica, the stylist he was giving me, was a SENIOR STYLIST and although her rates were a bit higher than the others', she was well worth it. Cut to: me with an expensive, fancy mullet. I brought three photos of the EXACT haircut I wanted, and I explicitly told Veronica two things: 1. Longer in the front, slightly shorter in the back. 2. Please, for the love of Christ, don't use a razor on the ends of my hair. (My hair is fine, but because I have a lot of it, people always want to "do a little something to get the weight off those ends", resulting in a lovely helmet look EVERY SINGLE TIME.) I don't know how I could have been more clear. She kept nodding and saying she TOOOOTALLY got it. I will say this: I enjoyed the ambiance of the salon; it was cozy, warm, and busy without seeming overcrowded or too loud. I wish I could say that Veronica actually listened to what I was telling her, or used the photos I brought as a reference, because I really enjoyed the environment. (I find that a lot of salons in New York have that cold, industrial feel.) However, I will most certainly NEVER be going back to David Ryan. While using the razor on my ends, Veronica kept asking, "Are you okay?" I left with a hole in my wallet the size of Benjamin Franklin's face and one of the worst haircuts I've ever had in my life. The front and sides were short, and the back was long enough to put in a pony tail. I felt like I had two different haircuts at the same time. I really TRIED to like it -- I gave it a month of growth before I finally just had my friend chop the back off for me, so that I'm once again wearing a helmet that I can't remove. I have been following Ruthy for the past 3 years which is unheard of for me. When I first met her, it was at previous employment. My previous hairstylist wasn't available so she was kind enough to take care of me. She was straight up, "Um.. who did your hair?" She was right it wasn't what I liked, but I didn't have a suitable replacement. After having the perfect fix, I never turned back and said bye-bye to my old stylist. When I got to the salon there was a customer who was upset about something, so she took a lot of their time and I ended up waiting a while - they were very patient with her but I was losing my own patience. But the Blow Dry I had was done so quickly and so proficiently that I didn't leave late and I'm not exaggerating when I say it's quite possibly the best Blow Dry I've ever had. I have very big, thick, curly hair and they made it straight perfectly - with volume and silky smooth, and it even survived the snow later that evening and remained this great the next day! Lily did a phenomenal job. She was very patient and suggested the right procedure to have done. I wanted my hair to be a pink pastel and she did the right thing. Didn't make me look ridiculous. Everyone in the salon was very nice and willing to help each other. The price was definitely reasonable considering the amount of work she had to do. I was at the salon from 1pm-6:30pm. Walking into this place I always feel like I'd been handed a pass to Artsy-ville. I've been coming for years but I'm still enthralled by the hip decor, cool music, and friendly staff who all have their own individual personalities stamped on their clothing and hairstyles. My original stylist had moved on and my old back-up has a weird schedule so I've been going to a few different ones but they're all good. Recently, I've been getting my haircut from Maria, who owns and runs the place. She's done a great job with my haircuts and is an engaging conversationalist. By way of a friend's friend's recommendation, I made an appointment with Maria, the colorist/owner. Maria successfully chose shades that complement my skin tone and bring out my eye color. Without even knowing my true hair color, she turned me into an expensive-looking version of myself. I honestly cannot overstate my satisfaction. More pros: The salon is artsy without pretense. This is a good place to go if you're a guy and want a fairly normal cut, and they seem to do a decent job with women. This is not the fanciest place in Manhattan by far, but it does the trick. If you want a really interesting cut, or assertive stylists, this isn't the place. Now... what annoys me about this place is the guy at the front. I always feel like he's pretty unfriendly, and when the subject of a tip comes up, he's a little rude. it's also pricey for what they offer, but again, not bad, just not a place I would go to on a regular basis. This was my second haircut with Pablo. I waited 6 months between visits and my hair still looked pretty good when I went in today! I have long, thick and dry hair, and Pablo heard my concerns 100%. He gave me a complimentary moisturizing mask and did a great job trimming and reshaping my hair so it is healthy again! I really appreciated how Pablo takes his time and always does top-notch work. The whole salon gives off a fun, relaxed vibe. I always leave smiling. One more thing: I love that this salon doesn't push you to buy products. I ended my visit wanting to ask more about the moisturizing mask and noticed how much better it feels to be a curious client than to be pressured into buying a product. Revision to the below review- the manager saw that I was unhappy with my cut and came in on his day off to fix it for free and offered to give me my next cut himself for free. He took it as a learning opportunity for training and I believe that he will address the issues with Markell. Greatly appreciated and my hair looks much better than before! ------- This haircut by Markell is the worst haircut I have ever gotten- I'm shocked because I've come to David Ryan so many times over the years and never had a problem. It seemed like this is the first haircut he ever gave- he didn't listen to what I wanted at all and it's extremely choppy. He basically cut my hair completely straight (the edges look terrible) and then when I asked for light layers he took the scissors and chopped the whole top section of my hair straight across, about 3 inches shorter than the rest- which in my experience has never been what someone means by layering? Unfortunately I will not be returning and will be getting this haircut fixed as soon as it's long enough.
