My wife introduced me to Olivier fifteen (15) years ago and Olivier is the only person I will let cut my hair! Olivier is a true artist with hair and has given me perfect haircuts - meaning that they looked great! Olivier is also a great person - he is friendly, listens well, shows care beyond my haircut. Sacha has not cut my hair but I interact with him sometimes when I am booking my appointment or when I am at the salon waiting for Olivier. This place wasn't bad per se. I just kind of expected more for the price. I got a very cute haircut from Sacha that grew out well...but I have received the same at lower priced salons as well. I also was in a bit of a hairstyle rut and was looking for direction (e.g., I think X would complement your attributes), but didn't really get much. After I left, I realized I tipped Sacha - and he accepted it without saying a word (well, he probably said thank you but I don't remember). Of course, I tipped him out of habit, but when I reflected on my other experiences getting cuts directly from the owner of a salon, they have always graciously declined the tip since they get the entire price of the cut anyway. When I realized this, it made me think less of the place - like it had less integrity than other salons I have visited. I liked my cut, but as in all businesses, service carries the day. My wife and I have been getting our hair cut by Olivier for a few years now. This guy is a master. Period. He is not into the fame and p/r evidently others are but he is truly a pro, trained in France, with a star-studded clientele he rarely admits to. Not only do you leave with a great look....but unlike other cuts we've gotten....in months to follow, it looks better and better. Many friends have since also gone to Olivier and love his work. They took the time to discuss what I wanted and gave me valuable advice to decide what to do. The result was stunning. I have very thin hair and complain about lack of volume. I love this salon, not only because I did hair modeling for them and got the haircut for a lot less then what it would have been, but because everyone was really nice, charming and weren't snobs like most other Chelsea salons happen to be . It's really super close to my job(just a walk through a store on 18th, that leads to 19th!)...anyway, I give them props for what they do. :) Update: I just went in yesterday for a single process color with Lenny, and I have to say...he is absolutely AMAZING! Having moved to New York six months ago from London I was really struggling to find a salon I trusted and felt comfortable with - there's a lot of choice! The thing that convinced me to try Sacha & Oliver was how friendly, unpretentious and unintimidating the salon is. The salon itself is classy and cool in a really relaxed way and everyone I met there seemed happy, chilled out and provided just really great service. They don't fuss, it's just simple, straightforward friendliness. The thing that convinced me to take the plunge and book an appointment was that the receptionist was really lovely and helpful and didn't make me feel pressured or self conscious (I was just passing so wearing gym stuff). I had a consultation with Kathy who immediately understood what I was trying to tell her (despite my poor descriptions!) and I felt I could trust her completely. She did an incredible job! My hair was dry, over processed and in desperate need of a good hair cut. She gave me an incredible hair cut, completely changed my colour to super sophisticated blonde highlights and treated the condition. I never thought my hair could look this good (I'm usually heavy handed with the blonde highlights and was nervous about going back to a more sophisticated shade of blonde). I couldn't recommend Kathy highly enough and it looks like, finally, I've found my hairdresser in New York. read more

It's true that one can get a good haircut at S&O- but at $200 per cut, one should expect that. I have never been disappointed in Olivier's haircut, and so I returned to this nearby salon after an approx. 10 year hiatus because I bid on and won a nonprofit auction for a haircut. I couldn't remember why I stopped going to the salon, but now, after 8 recent months of monthly color and 3 haircuts, I do remember. It's all the other elements of customer service that one relies on that aren't delivered at S&O, due to the arrogant nose-in-the-air behavior of the owners. Their woefully out of date website describes the salon as "warm, charming and inviting, sophisticated and unmistakably Parisian-inspired, where the relationship between client and stylist is pre-eminent". Olivier is described as "talented yet humble" and Sacha as "unpretentious talent". Poo bah. I remember now that the reason I left long ago was that they suddenly demanded substantially more money at checkout for a single process color, tacking on a fee for the blow dry. I had been a steady, monthly color customer, and this unjustified very sudden increase in price was challenged by me, met with derision, and so I stopped going. There are, after all, plenty of good hair places in the area. We are talking about having an employee apply color and rinsing the hair. Olivier simply mixed the single process color. No customer attention here. But I forgot, and so I started again with the auction haircut, thinking life was easier combining cut and color at one salon. BIG MISTAKE. This December, they did it again: After six months and six single process procedures without charge for drying the hair, BINGO--- they decided they wanted more money at checkout. When I protested, Olivier laughed at me in front of other mostly French patrons who were drinking champagne (I was offered none), and said "If you weren't charged, you were just lucky". And he spoke loudly in French to his partner across the room, probably disparaging me. JUST LUCKY! What hubris. What callous stupid thinking. Clearly, this does not epitomize a salon "where the relationship between client and stylist is pre-eminent". I hate being treated badly by anyone, but especially by someone when I'm paying their fee. I decided I would never again give them my business, but in January I really wanted Olivier to cut my hair, despite his bad treatment of me. He does give a good cut, and I hadn't yet found a new stylist. So yesterday I went for the haircut. The minute I sat in his chair, he was at me with insults, laughing in a bullying way and saying for all to hear that I apparently needed a bargain hairstylist since I didn't want to spend enough to keep my hair looking good. He was apparently waiting for me to arrive, to get in more insults. This rude, nasty bullying behavior is unknown to me---I've never experienced such nastiness before, especially as a client. Knowing that it was not wise to tell a haircutter with scissors in hand to go screw themselves BEFORE THE CUT, I quietly told him that what he was saying was nasty and to stop. It took a bit, and he finally started cutting. I received another fine haircut. This will last me long enough to find a new respectful good haircutter and salon. These French haircutters may be good at what they do, and they may attract a clientele of "loyal celebrities in the entertainment and fashion business", but really, what does a person want from a haircutter in NYC? A good cut and/or color; a kind, respectful experience; a price tag that doesn't fluctuate on whim. I've seen Olivier at his best, his manner gracious, but it was not for me. Rather, it was for Madame Swedish Publishing mogul, and for French New Yorkers. The very rich and the French-speaking clients get the best service here. My experience with Sacha & Olivier's nasty, disrespectful service, given to me at a 10-year interval, leads me to warn you that if you're not rich or famous, you are going to get the crumbs here. Prepare for second class service. This salon has been in action for 20 years, so there may be many who love them. If you're just local and not rich or notable, you will get a different kind of service. There is no hospitality offered at this salon. These are owners who do not put the client first. But if you want a good haircut and can endure their French style bad manners, you'll get the good haircut. Personally, I want and expect more, and will only support a salon offering a positive experience. You couldn't pay me to go back. read more

Getting a Brooklynite into the city for a haircut is no easy feat. But to have John cut your hair, it's a no brainer. John manages to make my crazy thick hair feel light thanks to the layers he puts in. His cuts are always versatile so no matter how wear it (wavy or straight), it'll always look good. The added bonus is he always shows me different ways I can style my hair so I don't get bored. I always get stopped by people asking me who does my hair. John is the man to see, and Sacha & Olivier is the place to go! The salon has a great ambience without feeling over the top pretentious, and the staff is friendly. She is the only colorist in New York who I trust with my multi-colored strands. Karen has taken me from strawberry blonde to light brown to my current starburst blonde highlights with chocolate brown lowlights. I just joined yelp just to rate this salon. Lenny has been cutting my hair for the past 6 -- 7 years. He does a wonderful job. The cut is great - my hair looks better and better as the months go on and still 8 months later (i know, i'm bad)- my hair has shape, the layers fall nice. I can't say enough good things about this salon. Sacha and Olivier are also very friendly and welcoming. Around Christmas time they open all the bottles of champagne and wine that clients bring them and serve it to you while you sit in there - it's just a real down to earth, nice place of business. I can only say that if you get your hair cut by Lenny - you will not want to go to anyone else. And he is so calming and friendly, it's just great. I spent $150 for a trim at Sacha & Olivier, and I have reason to believe the stylist who cut my hair doesn't actually work there. Let me explain: I called as a potential first-time client for a same-day trim. I was in need of an expert shaping (I've been growing it out), and I was prepared to pay well to make it a pampering experience. The Sacha & Olivier website states that a cut with one of their stylists is $125, which is exactly what I asked for when I called. At first, the person on the line (likely either Sacha or Olivier) said that only the owners were in for the day, and at $195-$210 per cut, I deemed their rates too high for a trim. Then, they asked me to hold while they made a call. After a few minutes they told me they found someone who would come in. My stylist was truly a dear, but I grew suspicious over the course of my appointment for a few reasons: 1. I asked my stylist what kind of products they use and love at the salon, and he didn't know the answer. "Sacha and Olivier love all kinds of products," he said, before changing the subject. 2. My stylist started to set me up at a washing sink, at which time one of the owners came by and informed him that the station I was at was broken. 3. My stylist didn't know what shampoo and conditioner to use to wash my hair. He mulled over his options aloud before he asked one of the owners what he should use, as I sat waiting. 4. My stylist didn't wait or check for the water to become temperate before washing my hair. So it started as a freezing cold wash (but at least ended on the warm side). 5. After the wash, my stylist didn't drape a towel around my neck or shoulders, so the next half hour involved cold water dripping down my neck, under my apron, and down my back. 6. It took my stylist two hours to give me a dry trim, a wash, and a blow dry. I am beyond appreciative to be given so much time, but after the first hour when I told him I needed to be done within the second hour, he became noticeably agitated and stressed out, even knocking over my water and dropping both his blow dryer and curling iron on separate occasions. 7. Throughout the appointment I got the uneasy feeling that both the stylist and I were being intensely observed by the owners, who never spoke to me. 8. When I was paying, the woman at the front desk didn't know what to charge me. She asked my stylist, who ALSO DIDN'T KNOW what to charge me. An owner answered at that same time I did: "$125" (except it was actually $130 with tax and $150 with tip). 9. My stylist didn't have an S&O business card. He handed me a generic card with his name scrawled on the back of it. 10. The name of my stylist is nowhere to be found on the S&O website or in their Yelp reviews. Weird, right? It was clear my stylist has been in the business forever but at the same time it felt like beauty school. It's true that I adored the gentleman cutting my hair - an effusively passionate artist and light-filled being. The cut was okay (I had to re-shape my bangs the next day at home). But I just can't shake the feeling that I was had. I was willing to spend more than I'd ever spent before for a top-notch salon experience; I'm just not so sure that's what I got. read more

I am very picky about my hair and trusting a new salon is always nerve wracking. Not at Sacha & Olivier. My stylist, Andrea is truly a hair aficionado! Her cuts always look amazing and I never have to do anything to my hair. That's when you know you have a good haircut. It's days when I do nothing, I get the most compliments. When it comes to color Andrea kills it every time! She is a trained professional. I always get single process and sometimes highlights. Just moved to NYC and my roots had grown out like mad, basically I needed color correction from what my old stylist did. I made an app with Olivier (my boss goes to him and suggested him). i LOVED IT! He took his time with me (I was the last client to leave), the color turned out amazing and he did a bit of clean up on my dead ends. So I had gotten a really bad highlight job from a very expensive hair salon and couldn't even bring myself to go back in to ask them to fix it, b/c I really didn't want them touching my hair again. A girlfriend of mine mentioned that a while back she had a gotten a botched coloring and she went to Lenny to have it fixed. I followed suit, lucked out and got an appointment the same day as I called. Let me tell you, Lenny is AMAZING and TALENTED. He was the most meticulous high-lighter I have ever had. He paid such close attention to my hair and I felt so comfortable with him. The results were fantastic. I absolutely love it! Finally someone called from across the room that they would be right with me. I wanted to try this place because of the dry cut. I have very wavy hair & when it's wet, it's really different than when it's dry so I like the idea of a dry cut although very few people do it. Hi there, I wanted to take a moment to give you my review of my haircut at Sacha & Olivier with John Gerard Griffith who gave me an amazing haircut a few days ago. I have passed Sacha & Olivier many times in my travels (I live in the neighborhood) and one day a few months back I went in for a blowout. I have longish thick, curly hair that can be frizzy around the face area if not attend to correctly. I have been to many, many places in NYC and always left kind of disappointed and ended up going home immediately thereafter to re-blowout the front of my hair. This was the first time I left a salon with my hair the way I wanted it. It looked great, I received a lot of compliments and the blowout also lasted a long time. This was my introduction to John. I thought to myself one of these days I am going to try him for a haircut. I have spent the better part of the past two years trying to get the haircut I wanted. I have been to a number of highly rated places in NYC and even one in LA while visiting a friend but was never really happy with the results. After working with John on my amazing blowout I figured I would try him for a haircut because he really seemed to understand my hair. I WAS HOPING FOR A NYC MIRACLE AND I GOT IT WITH JOHN! During our consultation I asked him if he could do anything with my hair what would he do. His vision was pretty much exactly what I was thinking so for me that was a really good start. I showed him several pics on my iPad to give him a better idea visually of what I liked/wanted. HE EXECUTED PERFECTLY! The tricky part for me was getting the layers around my face correct. As a curly hair person I cannot have dedicated fringe so I like to have the look of long grown out bangs. Believe me it is an art to get it right and John was spot on. He spent a lot of time with me to make sure I understood what he was doing and that I was happy. If he executes this well with long curly thick hair (that I wear smooth, full and with soft ends) I can only image how fantastic he must be with other hair textures. My recommendation would be to make a booking at Sacha & Olivier with him for a great haircut asap. Run don't walk:) He also does a great keratin treatment which for unruly hair is a miracle in itself. I was treated to a great shampoo. I have been getting my hair highlighted by Karen Murphy for about three years now, and I followed her to Sacha & Olivier when she moved from another salon. Karen is a total pro - she easily corrected my skunk-like highlights from a less skilled colorist, and I have not looked back since. She listens to her clients and gives good advice on how to freshen your look, but she does not push her own agenda. I have naturally light brown hair. We do low lights in winter and bright highlights in summer. Everywhere I go I get complimented on my color - especially from other hair dressers. I have recommended Karen many times. Sacha and Olivier are both excellent hair stylists. I have been going here for years, and I get compliments on my hair all the time. When someone asks "How do you get your hair to do that?" I explain that it's all in the cut - when you have a great cut, your hair will just follow it. Many of my friends are now satisfied customers. The prices are quite reasonable for the quality and it is a friendly professional place - unlike so many salons in NY!
