This review is long overdue but better late than never. If you're in the market for a diamond ring, look no further than David S Diamonds. David and his team are the absolute best in the business. I came here based off a recommendation from a friend and I was not disappointed. Mind you, the friend who recommended this place to me is one of those guys who does over-the-top research before he buys anything, so I already felt pretty good about coming here. (I later found out that 3 of my other friends, unrelated to the friend who recommended this place, also bought their engagement rings here as well. And they too are extremely thorough when it comes to their purchases). When I first arrived, David sat me down for an hour and just went over the entire process of how he gets his diamonds and why he's able to charge such great prices compared to other sellers. Then he gave a detailed seminar and how to look at diamonds and the different things to look out for. Using the knowledge I picked up from the seminar, I went to over 20 other diamond sellers and needless to say, I was shocked at how other diamond sellers sold with little to no integrity. Words can't possibly describe the gratitude I have, nor the luck I feel, for having met David S and his team. Though 5 stars is max David and his team deserve 7. They are truly exception people in today's otherwise opaque and deceitful world of diamond dealers. As I prepared to make a lifelong commitment to my gf I first had to make one of the largest purchases of my life. Knowing not even the 4 C's I started doing my homework. I booked about 8 appointments with the diamond hawkers of NYC confident that I was just going to use NYC to get my chops before jetting off to LA or Chicago or Seattle to buy the rock I really wanted at a better price. My first 6 appointments were basically the same. Pushy used car salesman. They would hand me 5 diamonds, put them side by side, and try to create some fake value scale before convincing me to buy the second most expensive one at a "bargain" price. Why should I buy one over the other? It was always some sticking point, its near colorless, its near perfect clarity, blah blah blah. I was about done with the BS, about ready to cancel the rest of my appointments in NYC, then I walked into David S. Everything changed. First off, his showroom is beautiful. Spacious and professional, not one of those corner offices in a building full of diamond dealers with enough space for two people, a desk, and a safe. David S is the majority of an entire floor with waiting room, comfy chairs, display cases, etc. His staff are kind, very attentive to email, and accommodating. The main differentiator when I walked into David S was the fact that he didn't sell me a damn thing, didn't even try. I was a lost sheep and he did exactly what I needed him to do, offer guidance. Whereas my past experiences were 45 minutes of pure sell sell sell, David sat with me for well over 2 hours and schooled me in the A-Z of diamonds. He enlightened me about the tricks jewelers played on vulnerable folks in the diamond district. He told me about the methods that jewelers use to evaluate diamond quality when they buy from wholesalers. He showed me advanced eval tools I had never seen in any previous appointment. He was completely transparent on his business model and how he makes money. He sent me home with a 10 page packet of reading materials and told me to come back in two weeks. All the while he never tried to sell me a single thing. I was speechless, thinking maybe I didn't need to leave NYC to get an honest deal on an engagement ring. David was honest, transparent, and even told me to keep shopping around if I wanted to. His integrity was further cemented when a customer leaving his store stopped us in the middle of our meeting, turned to me, pointed at David, and said "this is the most patient man in all of New York City". I could tell he had gone through the same process as me. Fast forward two weeks and I was back at David's. I had read the packet, feeling for the first time I knew enough to really judge a diamond. David knew my budget and brought me out three or four stones. He didn't drown me in options. Some smaller stones at higher clarity and better color, some larger at lower clarity and worse color. They were all of exceptional cut, which I now understood was all that counted besides carat. David let me scrutinize the diamonds to a T. He showed me them in every light condition using every tool he had. He showed me the full array of reports, GIA, gemex, and 3 others. He showed me the stones in different settings and metals. He never pressured me to buy one. It would take two more appointments, including one with my future sister in law, before I pulled the trigger. David even offered to put all of the stones on hold, out of circulation while I was making my decision. Once I finally picked the stone he helped me run through countless settings until I found just the right one. And the price? Well, i'll let you figure that one out for yourself when you visit his store, but trust me you won't be disappointed. Finally with the purchase made David's team worked diligently to forge the ring, set the diamond, and prepare it for the big day. They allowed me to come and see the finished product and even offered to house it for me until they shipped it to the destination right before the big day. They suggested insurance companies and gave me a diamond care and maintenance guide. They offered to service the ring twice a year free of charge for life. Lastly they gave me a money back guarantee just in case something happened, which is a must when buying a stone. Listen, I understand that this is a business and they need to make money but wow... I'm sure everyone shopping for their engagement ring doesn't want to feel like someone is just trying to push whatever inventory so they can finally "cash out" Obviously I was never supposed to see his response, but if this is the way he conducts his business in the background, it puts a lot in question. As a first-time diamond buyer, my experience with other jewelers was incredibly frustrating. I spent countless hours educating myself on the "4 Cs" and thinking through how to evaluate a diamond. Every time, however, I found a stone that I thought was a great deal, I eventually had the realization that it was just an appropriately priced, lesser quality option. Additionally, I was dealing with websites (James Allen, Blue Nile, Rare Carat, etc.), local jewelers in Boston, jewelers in New York, and a family jeweler in Tampa who all were providing information and service that failed to meet expectations. Overall, I was left feeling that everyone was providing service that was impersonal, fake, pushy, and devoid of information. When I was getting a hard sell to buy a given diamond and would ask "what makes this better than X or Y diamond sold by you or another jeweler?" the most detailed answer I would get is "well... this one is just really... good." This was understandably disconcerting. My experience with David S was a refreshing departure. Our initial conversation was over 1.5 hours of walking me through the information that I had been desperately looking for - understanding how a jeweler would assess a stone. This allowed me to reframe my thought process to realize that the 4 Cs are simply metrics to assess rarity and that I needed to be assessing the optical performance metrics of a diamond to know how it was actually going to look. No other jeweler had gone through this process with me; and when I had proactively brought up the Holloway Cut Advisor or ideal proportions to them, they were often underinformed about how to relate cut to optical performance. Beyond the content of my initial David S discussion, it was highly distinctive that not only was he not trying to upsell me - he wasn't even trying to sell me at all. The whole conversation was strictly for him to educate me and to gather the requisite information to find me the perfect diamond. Moving forward, our next touch point was the presentation of three diamonds that not only included what David S thought was the best option, but also one at a slightly higher price point and one slightly lower. With me not being able to personally come in to assess the three diamonds in person, I greatly appreciated his willingness to work so closely with my sister in person in New York for the "diamond tasting" and much of the follow up. Between that and the incredible amount of objective data I was sent for each diamond (GIA certificates, gemex reports, light path / optical scope assessments, pictures, and videos), I felt like I was able to feel fully informed and involved in the process - even without being able to travel to New York. The fact that David S pushed me towards the better-value, mid-priced diamond went a long way to build trust. David S talked with me over and over again through so many iterations to decide not only on the perfect diamond, but also one of his signature minimalistic settings to maximally feature the diamond. As helpful and available as David S was throughout the process, Angel was just as great in working through logistics and details. Any time I talked with either of them, I never felt rushed or like I was bothering them. It made me feel like I was the only customer on their mind. The level of service was truly exceptional. And, hearing them ask for us to drop in every time we are in New York to visit and get a complimentary ring cleaning and checkup, I recognize that they are highly invested in creating a relationship that lasts far longer than the engagement ring shopping period. In diamond shopping, everyone has "a guy" who can get you "the hook up." In reality, though, there really isn't any arbitrage to be had in diamond buying. It's not about getting a great deal on a subpar diamond - it's about figuring out the degree of rarity you can afford and then maximizing the optical performance (i.e., value) at that level. In the end, I got a diamond at the rarity level (in terms of the 4 Cs) that was comparable in price to standard online retailer offerings, though of a quality (in terms of cut and optical performance) that would go for significantly more for Blue Nile Astor, James Allen True Heart, or Tiffany. This is something that I feel I never could have gotten outside of working directly with a master cutter like David S. I found a style of ring I loved at a boutique downtown, but didn't know what color stone I wanted. Steve found every stone under the sun for me and my husband to see -- gray diamonds, yellow diamonds, and so many other color gemstones. When we decided on yellow, Steve found a variety of high quality, unique yellow stones. We eventually found one and then he got to work on creating the setting to look exactly how I wanted (two-tone yellow and white gold, vintage feel). A few weeks back, my father told me about a diamond called the Solasfera. He also mentioned that David was the designer of it and I had to go see him. What an amazing experience! David and staff were extremely welcoming, very helpful and informative in my search. My fiancé bought my engagement ring from David S. Diamonds as a suggestion / referral from a friend and it is BEAUTIFUL! He worked with Ravin and had a great experience with him.
