For ~15 years, I've had a pair of diamond "huggie" hoop earrings that I rarely take out. While they're not super high end, they have sentimental value. Image my distress then, when one evening I came home and discovered I'd lost one. I was heartbroken. I filed a claim with my renter's insurance and the adjuster suggested I contact a jeweler to see if they could custom make a match to the remaining earring. I went to the American Gem Society website and saw Roman Malakov Diamonds listed -- their website was full of jewelry that was far more expensive than my earrings. I called them, explained my situation, and asked whether they could give me an estimate to provide my insurance company. The woman I spoke with was so nice and put me at ease. A few days later I took my remaining earring to the store, where I met with Michael. He examined it and took measurements, and a few days later provided me with a quote for a custom match, which I sent to the insurance company. The adjuster called me a few days later to say that the price quoted was actually slightly less than a comparable pair he'd found on Macy*s website, so my claim was approved in full! The adjuster mentioned that he'd called Michael with additional questions about the diamonds and he was impressed with how quickly Michael responded. I took my earring back to Michael so that the custom match could be made. He was very patient with all my questions and explained that the new earring would be very, very close but not exactly the same - which I understood. I had to leave my earring with him so they could make the match. It took about seven weeks, but it was worth the wait. When Michael told me it was ready, I tried to keep my expectations low -- like they would probably be "close enough," but not perfect - so I wouldn't be disappointed. When he brought them out I couldn't have been happier. I looked at them both and correctly guessed which earring was the original (based on a few differences that are mostly only visible when looking at the back of hoop). But when looking at them in my ears, I think they look essentially identical. He told me he chose the diamonds himself to match them (the 4 Cs) as closely as possible to the original. He also polished, steam cleaned, and tightened the hinge on the original earring. Even though my earrings cost a fraction of the jewelry they sell there, I was never made to feel like it was beneath them to work on my earring. I'm so pleased with how the custom earring turned out that I'm having them make a pair of earrings for me using gems from a couple of rings I have that I no longer wear. I flew to New York from Chicago for 3 days with the intention of exploring the diamond district and all of the Instagram jewelers that I have followed. After day 1 I was exhausted and felt like the jewelers weren't listening to what I wanted, and I was frustrated. In my notebook I had 5 places; prices for diamonds, and I rated the jewelers. Day 2 when I entered the diamond district I stopped in Roman Malakov after it not being on my initial list. Meir sat with me for 45 minutes, and listened to what i wanted. When I left to look at other places I knew that I wanted to work with him; if we could meet on pricing. When it came to decision time we met in the middle on pricing; and that was fine with me because I knew he'd execute my vision. Long story short in front of 20,000 people at the Golden State Warriors game in San Francisco I presented this masterpiece of a ring to a standing ovation. After visiting 4 high end jewelers such as Cartier and Tiffanys we decided to visit the diamond district in NYC. I didn't want to get all caught up in the Tiffany moment. Which I will admit was pretty glorious. I'm glad that I was smart enough to leave and continue shopping. I was impressed with the selection at Roman Malakov which is what lured me in and made me ultimately purchase with them. We were greeted nicely and asked what we were looking for. Which in my case Was a wedding band. I lost mine several yrs ago. Something that has tormented me for years. My husband wanted to replace it for our 15th year anniversary. The staff was friendly and patient while I tried many rings on and took my time. Also FYI my engagement ring from a prior resizing job was in pretty bad shape and they offered to fix it with the purchase of the new band. That made it even better. I was allowed to go with my ring and WATCH them fix it. I never lost sight of it during the repair process. His name I believe was Tony. It took him over an hour and he left it like new. I was very emotional about how beautiful of a job he did. His craft was true art. For this I am forever grateful. Going back to the band after choosing the band I fell in love with they offered to FED EX to me to save on tax since I lived out of state. I was hesitant to do that because it was a lot of money for me and obviously the risk. However I decided to do it as the savings were in the hundreds. They packaged in front of me and sealed it with my signature. The fed ex package arrived exactly when he said it would along with the grading report certificate. When I opened the package I knew I had made the right choice. It's absolutely gorgeous. It's even nicer than I remembered. It was meant for me. This review is long overdue! My husband walked into Roman Malakov Diamonds not ever hearing about them nor not knowing what to expect although i I have. He was blown away to say the least! He was looking for a new wedding band for me, it was our 23rd wedding anniversary and I've been experiencing swelling in my hands and fingers due to an auto immune condition. Michael, one of the gentlemen at the showroom, was wonderful to do this transaction with! My husband decided on a band and came home with it.. the packaging was simply beautiful, but what was inside was stunning! Unfortunately the band was still too tight, through no one's fault, fingers were just swollen, I could not get the ring off. But while it was on I could not help but stare at it, it sparkled so much. I purchased a high value diamond ring from this store together with my girlfriend. The next day my girlfriend made research and figured out we overpaid by 30%-40% of the market price. She went back the next day to return and asked for a refund. They treated her like a prostitute and offered to take the ring back for 50% of the value. There are a lot of honest and fair priced store on 47th street. You should go to them and avoid this business. I was window shopping on 47th Street with my elderly aunt who loves jewelry. We saw an interesting ring in Roman Malakov's window and stepped into the store. The "gentleman" manning the counter was rude to my Aunt. She asked to see a diamond ring she liked in the window and he demanded to know if we knew how many carats she wanted and what shape of diamond etc. She said "I don't know all that I just want to see the ring that caught my eye" followed by "we are not getting off to a very good start here." The rude "gentleman" manning the counter then said "If you don't like the way we conduct business then you can leave" so we did. What a terrible experience to have my elderly aunt treated like a bum by an arrogant man at the counter. I would not set foot in that store again. The Worst shopping experience of my life! When we requested a GIA certificate to prove the stone was the quality Mier stated it was and the GIA came back showing it was a very low quality, they would not refund my good faith deposit. We have been trying to get a refund for almost a year. We have compared prices locally and even if the stone would have been the quality stated we were still being overcharged. I have never had a jeweler overstate their product or refuse a refund if a customer is not satisfied with the product. If you want to buy from a reputable merchant stay clear of Roman Malakov.
