Dr and I had a rough start. I feel helpless with a partially paralyzed hand and went to him for a second opinion. His staff dropped the ball on scheduling me for pain management. Dr Desai has emailed me several times to follow up and had completely turned around my opinion of him and his care. We had an outstanding experience with Dr. Desai and the entire team. Dr. Desai was incredibly thorough, taking the time to answer all our questions both during our initial office visit and in the pre-operative suite prior to surgery. We especially appreciated that he provided an order for occupational therapy (OT) before surgery, which allowed us to schedule OT sessions in advance. This thoughtful step ensured my husband could be seen by OT twice before our international trip, beginning on post-op day 10--after his MD follow-up. After the surgery, Dr. Desai went above and beyond by checking in on my husband twice in the PACU. We were also impressed to receive a follow-up call from Dr Desai himself the next day to ask how my husband was doing and to answer any lingering questions. I had the most amazing experience with Dr Desai, more than five years ago, reconstituting my left wrist which needed a three way surgery from a break down, older steep tall dry wooden stairs, forgetting to hold the l I felt he had such excellent bedside manner, such knowledge and patience, he showed great care throughout the process, made follow up calls, and was very pro patient But when I ended up appreciating his work most, is when I started going to physical therapy and saw other patients healing from wrist surgeries with other doctors My scar was ultra thin, I am talking less than 1/2 millimeter or less, somewhat invisible from the start. It is literally invisible, same color as my skin Whereas other people's wrist scars I was looking at were much darker than their natural skin tone, almost black, with huge zigzagging stitches that compared to mine would have to leave huge traces! i am very thankful to him for his decisions and work at every turn. Made an appointment on Beach Blvd. The person who made the appointment seemed friendly. When I arrived, the office was packed with people. The only way to check in is by automatic check-in! Two terminals in the waiting room. Very uncomfortable! Entering your personal information in a room full of people! Disgusting! I have never experienced anything like this. The girls behind the counter would not check me in! I was told that was the only way. Why would a hand specialist have such a check in when people with hand and finger problems come in?! Dr Desai was compassionate, thorough and did an excellent job on the hand. All the staff from the receptionist, nurses preparing me for surgery, surgical nurses, and after care nurses were so kind and helpful and extremely competent. The anesthesiologist explained the procedure and made sure I understood and was comfortable. I had a terrible migraine and the nurse provided a cover for my eyes and a couple of warm blankets. I also got a lavender spray on a piece of cloth that helped tremendously. I got a pair of warm socks with grips and was assisted to the bathroom and getting dressed. For those with, a need to know, I had a great experience with Dr. Desai and his magnificent medical team. They were very warm and caring in regards to my issues. My left wrist has become rebellious with age, maybe you would say grumpy old bones where it was extremely painful if you bumped my hand. I have a torn ligament between the scaphoid and lunate bones and arthritis I was unable to hold a glass of water without the fear of dropping it . After a few visits and shots, Dr Desai shared with me his conclusion that a minor operation to snip the two nerves that send pain signal to my brain may relieve some of the pain. I with my internet dr skills agreed this would be a great start and here I am four weeks later, My left hand is pretty normal acting with minor pain. Will see how it goes over time. Ps, my Internet doctor skills are probably not the best. read more

I came in with a confirmed broken elbow. Dr. Desai never examined my arm and never asked me to move it. He said he didn't think I needed surgery but would order a CT scan in case. I had my follow up appointment after the scan with Dr. Desai virtually. He told me that he remembered that I had good mobility (again, he never checked) and determined I did not need surgery. After feeling uncomfortable with his initial assessment and no exam, I had a second opinion (with Dr. Rose - an amazing surgeon) scheduled immediately. Dr. Rose actually examined my arm and realized that I could not supinate at all and scheduled me for surgery that week. Luckily I listened to my gut and not Dr. Desai. My bone was actually so displaced he couldn't even move it during surgery until after he put the screws in). If I would have waited he would have had to remove the top of my bone to get my mobility back. 0 stars for a rushed visit and no examination = negligence read more

I've been seeing Dr. Desai for over two years now and he's performed 2 surgeries: the first to remove a tumor in my knuckle and the second to shorten and re-align a tendon. He understood my initial reluctance to have surgery so we worked on other alternatives first (steroid shots, a splint, physical therapy). Those alternatives did help short term but i did finally decide to have surgery And I am extremely grateful he was the one that performed it. He works in tandem with Hoag orthopedic Institute surgery center in Newport Beach, and they are also top notch. He has an excellent bedside manner, explains things to me in terms I can understand as a non-medical person, answers all of my questions courteously and compassionately, and has proven to be available after hours on a holiday weekend for something I thought was an emergency. Dr Desai was recommended to me by my coworker but I find him not wanting to be bothered . I had trigger finger at the thumb and when ever I write or open bottles it would hurt since my job requires this , I need time off , he would only authorize 1 week and would not listen to my job description . Gave me cortisone shot and sent me on my way. I end up getting a second opinion and since then got my surgery for trigger finger release. Gotten 4 week after surgery to recover. Normally trigger finger is not a big deal and recovery should only be 1 week but due to the nature of my work and the location of the trigger finger , I was not able to work to fully of my duties. Dr Desai needs to be more empathetic and listen to pt needs. I will not recommend him to anyone read more

Excellent. Injured my dominant hand getting Christmas tree lights down :-) Ignored for a while. Got worse. Went in for consultation followed quickly by MRI and surgery. All excellent - great communications, no pain, well cared for, super rehab, and excellent results. Fully recovered, discharged, and even playing tennis again ... and won! I noticed a couple of "edgy" reviews which made me wonder. However first and foremost I want a surgeon to be good at surgery. And I liked him. My 14 year old daughter had a wrist injury skateboarding while we were on vacation over summer. She complained of pain and loss of motion for a few weeks after the incident. I didn't realize the significance of her injury until we saw Dr. Desai. Luckily for us, his office was very accommodating in making the appointment. She had a series of x-rays in his office which was very efficient. Upon reviewing the films Dr. Desai explained in detail the severity of her injury. He was very attentive, friendly, and made us feel confident in his treatment plan. Dr. Desai saw us several times afterwards and monitored her progress closely. A few months later and she is doing great - full motion in the wrist and back to skating (slightly more cautious). Took my son to the Newport Orthopedic Institute because he broke his wrist and they were covered under my insurance. Dr. Desai is a great doctor. He takes the time to answer your questions and has a great bedside manner. I have been mostly to the Huntington Beach branch and was really impressed with the patient care they offered. From the front desk, to the medical assistants, to the doctors, it was a very nice experience with very short wait times. Absolute fabulous Doctor. I had a broken a shattered radial bone (wrist area) = surgery. He spent a great amount of time with me, made sure to answer any questions I had and gave me all the options possible. I went through with the surgery with Dr Desai and I healed very fast, and have full range of motion after 9 screws and a plate in my wrist till this day. First week I could move my hand, and my physical therapy started shortly after that. Plus I had no hard cast!!!! Just an arm brace (this is great cause it was easy to shower). Even after surgery (same day) I was at home and felt the nerve block wearing off and it was a hot tingling sensation. I called and he answered the emergency line and comforted me explaining that it was completely normal. Indeed he was right. He is young, bright, and knows what he is doing. Absolutely impressed even a year plus after my surgery. Would recommend him to anyone! read more

What a fabulous surgeon and all-around nice guy! I was super nervous when I developed trigger thumb in my dominant hand and needed emergency appointment. Just had moved from Boston and nowhere near my beloved hand surgeon at B & W's Hospital. But I felt like I hit the jackpot with Dr. Desai :) We tried the cortisone injection first per usual, and when it d/n work as hoped for he scheduled me quickly for surgery as I was in fair amount of discomfort. We visited for my wife's hand pain (tendonitis). The doctor was totally inattentive to the patient, showing no interest. As if he was willing to move out of the room or to the next patient. Seemed really unprofessional. He is very friendly and made me feel very comfortable in his office. He came and saw me in a very timely manner and was very respectable. He immediately had an attitude and wasn't willing to listen to anything I had to say ! Even though I explained my injuries setting up the appointment and the very polite management tried to counsel me on the problem they agreed that he was qualified to treat the injuries I listed, all he wanted to do was move on to another patient and actually stated to me numerous times ! I recently had a severe fracture on my elbow. Dr Desai is the best. He performed a perfect surgery with a plate and pins. For some reason, Dr. Desai always seems to be annoyed with his patients, making no eye contact, rushing through the exam, and ridiculing questions about upcoming surgery. Often he just ignores questions altogether. He makes clear by his tone and detachment that the patient is merely a job to him, just another dollar coming in, not a human being who will live with the effect of his work, good or bad. The patient gets the immediate impression that Dr. Desai doesn't care whether you heal up or even survive. This is not a first impression; unfortunately because of my health plan, I've been his patient for about 8 years and he has always been curt, imperious, and sometimes rude. read more
