Really enjoyed discovering the fractured prune on a day trip to surf city. It's been dishing out donuts since 1976 and has a great origin story for how it got its name (a female athlete named prunella who was injury-prone!). This is a made-to-order Linda place kinda like Duck. You say how many you want and they start frying them while you select whatever glaze/topping combo you desire. My group got the OC sand (honey cinnasug), the raspberry, a lemonade and a choco coconut. When they come fresh and hot out of the fryer they are delicacies. My raspberry glaze was super fresh and tangy. The hours on yelp haven't updated for the high season so even if yelp says they are closed, try anyway! We almost didn't go because yelp said they closed at 1pm but we passed by at 3 and their open sign was up. Turns out they are open til 8! Definitely enjoy these fresh in the store. I don't know how good they would be after they've been allowed to cook and sit. read more

The past couple of summers, our family has spent a week at Surf City in the summer. The first place we went was The Fractured Prune. The only bad thing is a week is not enough time to try everything! They have so many wonderful flavor combinations listed or you can choose your own. They also make them to order so they're nice and hot when you get them. We bought two dozen assorted a couple of times this trip. The bacon bomb is a clear favorite as is salted caramel. We've tried most of them. Walking in the door with those warm boxes will make you the hero. Or you can scarf your doughnut down right there! They also have milk in the drink cooler. The staff is always cheerful and helpful. If you visit Surf City, this is a must whether you go in for one or a couple of dozen! read more

We were so surprised to find a home made donut place in town. We'd been to others and were curious about this one. When we found out they've been around since 1976 and were the first to create this experience in NC , we had to try them and see how they stacked up against Duck Donuts! We ordered all kinds and weren't once disappointed. Every donut delight is made to order, old school style. At $2.00 a piece, I was disappointed. I guess maybe I don't "get it" - it's regular donut with some flavored syrup and toppings. Donut was hot so that was nice. Regular donut was ok and since donut was so hot - syrup was running off of it. I guess this place has been open since 1980something so they must be doing something right. Spotted Fractured Prune when I was picking something up from the store next door and the sign saying 'DOUGHNUTS' called to me. (Think I may have been a cop in a former life) Clean store that smelled SO good, friendly staff told us to take our time picking but if we knew how many we'd like they would start cooking them. Every doughnut is made to order, not just dipped and sprinkled but COOKED TO ORDER. You don't get no fresher than this! I'm not sure what the appeal is. The donuts tasted like fryer oil. An hour later, the glaze had all run onto the cardboard box and when you picked up a donut, the entire bottom stuck to the box. I'd love to be able to post a beautifully, full box of warm, gooey, delicious donuts . . . But we're adults with no willpower and we dove into the box as soon as we got back to the beach house where we were staying. They wee supposed to be an afternoon treat. They didn't make it. Our husbands were disappointed that these were "cake" donuts and not the yeasty ones they like. But one taste changed their minds on the soft, light, tender, cake-like texture. I could name all the combinations but people here have made that available, and the list is on their website. The ladies who helped us were patient and gave good recommendations. Came here twice during our stay and got a dozen donuts each time. Staff was super friendly as soon as you walk in. They are very fast and patient at the same time. A donut shop that is as unique as its name! Fractured prune has an extremely creative and super fun menu of donuts to choose from, which can be a bit overwhelming at first (b/c you want them ALL!), but is so worth it! We were feeding a crowd so we decided to get a little bit of everything, asking the staff to include some of their favorites and then choosing a few on our own that sounded delicious. Cutting the donuts into quarters so each person could try multiple was the best way to serve them...even if I found myself eating 3 of the 4 pieces of one kind, Our favorites were the OC Sand and the Carnival (with the Salted Caramel coming in a close third). The Margarita donut was the only one that we really wouldn't try again, but that's not to say it wasn't yummy. Try this donut shop if you can - and picking them up in-store is worth it just for the smell of warm dough, sugary dough alone, let alone the hand-dipping show that could entertain me for longer than I am willing to admit...! Donuts are fresh and tasty but the flavors aren't very prominent. Hard to tell one from another in a dozen different flavors other than the coloring. Our server (may have been the manager) was a little too edgy, almost rude to my mother who couldn't hear her request for us to order from outside since we didn't have masks. Then (outside) my mom was talking to me about her flavor choices, she curtly cut in and said you have to tell me your order. She said something about I can hear you even with a mask on but not politely at all. My mom was speaking to me, not facing her in anyway, she was just very snarky. Overall the food was ok but the attitude from this woman was unacceptable. Won't be returning or recommending. read more
