Super happy I found Don! I called him to move some cabinets in my kitchen (from hanging in the middle of my kitchen - forehead height - to up against the wall) He was very clear and honest about the work required, the time frame and the cost. He is very straight talking ..no BS yet very polite and well mannered too! It took a couple of days to do the work (it went from a cabinet move to a drywall job because we unveiled a giant hole in my ceiling after the cabinets came down) but each time, scheduling a day/time with him was easy and he was prompt and hard working. My husband and I are really pleased with the work.. the ceiling looks flawless, nobody would ever know cabinets used to be there :) An added, important plus is that while he was working on my cabinets... he noticed and smelt gas in my walls in near the washer/dryer unit :( ... something I should have acted upon much sooner, I know! It turned out to be a loose flex pipe connecting to my dryer.....that I immediately had fixed So.. all in all, I'm very thankful to have the cabinets moved.......but even more thankful that he saved my life! I was referred to Don through another handyman for some basic home repairs (garbage disposal repair, door wall curtain installation, etc). I have a very "hands off" landlord who lives out of state, so when things break around our condo, it can be a real pain to get it fixed and get an estimate to the landlord, etc. Long story short- I called Don for an estimate, made an appointment, and not two days after initial contact he had everything completed and working like new. He also mentioned a one year warranty on all his work in case something goes awry- which is great to have if ever needed. Don was prompt, extremely polite, and completed the job underbudget from his original estimate (always a plus!). I used his handyman services to to flip-around a bathroom door to open from the other direction, and to trim the bottom of another bathroom door so it could close above the bathroom mat. You could tell he had extensive carpentry experience from the top-notch quality of the work. A few months later I had him install a high-end glass shower door. His cost was about $50 less than Home Depot. Quality of the install was excellent. He is on-time, his quotes are accurate and fair, he cleans up after himself, and his work is A+. read more

I had been putting off several small jobs because I've just been so busy on other things, so I finally decided to delegate the work and get it DONE! Don showed up as closest to my place in Del Mar, and had great ratings, so I called and left a message that he answered pretty quickly and we set an appointment for him to visit and check out what I needed. As a test, I gave him something easy, hanging a clothes drying hangar outside on my condo balcony. Boom, done! And the best part was that he was real careful about getting the stucco smoothed out for a firm mounting. So far, so good. Next up was hanging two framed pictures on the wall next to each other. The real challenge here was getting them PERFECTLY level because I have incredibly keen sense of proportion and can detect even the slightest bit out of level. Again, Don did a perfect job. For the 3rd job, he installed a bolt-cutter proof mounting into a wall in the garage so I can chain my bike to it. My last bike was stolen because I didn't lock it up. Duh. I got a new bike and will not make that mistake again... All the work was first class, quick, and relatively inexpensive. Don was amazing and I would definitely hire him again when I need help on my next household job. My wife and I recently re-did our patio deck by laying down Interlocking Brazilian Hardwood Tiles. The only thing that needed to be completed were the edges as the patio has some odd twist and turns. I got in touch with Don, described the job, and we set up an in house meeting right away so he could check it out in person. He was right on time for the meeting and we set the appointment for 2 weeks later. On the day of the job, Don was on time and did incredible work. He was very precise with the measurements and the intricate cuts of the individual tiles. From there he removed 3 doors to closets we have on the patio and cut them down in order to fit over the wood tiles. We called Don at DC Handyman and asked him if he could do what we needed - i) to repair some antique mahogany chairs and ii) to build a custom cat ladder to connect from the ground floor patio to the 2nd floor balcony. Don came over to check out the job and then went over to pick up the necessary materials from Home Depot. Note that Don charges a $75 fixed fee to give an onsite quote, which is then taken off the balance of the job. That way he doesn't have to screw around with time wasters and penny pinchers. BTW - Don charges a fair price for the work - $55 per hour (for work plus travel time to get materials), plus the materials themselves. Upon his return from Home Depot, Don first went to work on repairing the chairs which needed some re-gluing and pinning. I totally understand that the proper way to fix these chairs is to take them to a professional antique furniture restorer who can fully dismantle the chairs and replace the mahogany dowels and any missing pieces, etc., but we were very short on time and just needed a 'quick fix' that would last awhile. After finishing the repairs, the chairs were much more sturdy and it was very difficult to see where the repairs had been made, which was great. Then Don went right to work on the cat ladder, which took a lot of planning to get the steps in the right place around the support column and still allow the cats to climb up onto the balcony. He did a great job. I would recommend Don for any woodworking tasks. read more

We called Don to get a quote for a few items around the house and before leaving he asked for 75.00 which he said was because he worked. In my experience, the disclosure of any fees comes at the time i book the appointment. I asked him if he takes the 75.00 off our bill when he comes to do the work to which he said no. My wife questioned him several times and said you did not tell me about this fee before coming over, to that he said i guess you cant afford it and left. He may be a good craftsman, but he didn't display good business sense to us. He wanted to charge us 80.00 an hour to patch drywall and suggested he's the best there is and perhaps we should get someone else and call him when they screw it up. There was nothing about his visit or quoting process that aligned with anyone i've done business with. Hence, i could not recommend him to anyone. Don - You got yourself here because of your arrogance and you've decided to defend yourself in the same manner. . What you should do is apologize for your behavior and have a bit of humility. We were not trying to get anything for free or waste your time, we wanted a quote for some handyman services, and clearly, you are not the guy for the job. I stand by my review and the occurrence, you were wrong and you cant admit it, rather, you want to insult us further by lying and misleading other consumers with the false claims in your reply. . You've misjudged this consumer entirely by suggesting we cant afford to pay for your services or that we're trying to get something for free. If you had any class or business sense, we would have hired you, but because of your attitude, we would never hire you. Don is a real find! He replaced the bottom "floor" of one of my European kitchen cabinets (extremely hard wood and well made) due to years of plumbing leaks from my kitchen faucet. He took extreme care so as not to scratch the insides of the cabinet. I gave him a sample piece of wood and he matched the color extremely well. The result was a lovely new "floor" for my cabinet that looks as well done as a professional expert cabinet maker would do. I hired Don to complete work that I had hired another contractor to do but he never did. We were in a time crunch to get the work done because we had a move back in date that could not be changed.
