The food was spot on! The king trumpet calamari and meatball sandwich were so great! The philly jackfruit sandwich was good, just not quite what I was looking for, too many things (sauces, and other stuff). Drinks were pretty good we loved our first round, peach sunset, limoncello, and amaretto sour! The second round not so much, grapefruit spritz, cynar & tonic, and strawberry negroni. The second ones were just way too sweet. Now for the service...all the employees were so nice, helpful, and accommodating, but they lacked organization. Staff walked up to our table multiple times with food or drink that we did not order. Many staff approached our table after we already ordered asking if we wanted to place an order and some times we were brought items that we already received. They were nice enough to give us a free round of drinks because our food was taking long, we didn't even notice/complain. All and all this place is great for fast casual eating, where you can just walk right up with out a reservation! The food is good, inventive, and the atmosphere is great. read more

I came here with a friend who's a vegan. I'm not vegan, but I highly recommend this place. The food was excellent! We had the King Trumpet Calamari for appetizers, Bucatini &Meatballs and Chick'n Piccata for dinner, and the Cheesecake for dessert. The food was well seasoned and delicious. No salt or pepper needed (coming from a Latina, this is saying something! LOL). Service was a bit interesting...but they were pleasant and professional. I saw the write up for this place in Washingtonian and my eyes did the cartoon awooga thing. My bestie is vegan, and I love to share meals together. When I pulled up DC Vegan menu, I was amazed that it was all vegan... like, it sounded too good. I didn't know what I would choose. So when we got there, it was confusing as to what was the deli and the bar, because we wanted to go to the beautiful botanical bar. Luckily someone was outside to direct us. You ascend to the deli, and the bar is level with the street. We went during dinnertime and sat at the bar but didn't get drinks this time. First of all, we loved the decor which had lots of lush wallpaper, warm lighting, and interesting prints. The bartender was super nice and helped us pick out some items. Excellent service and delicious food. The literal only note I have is that the little hall walking to the bathroom was dark and I was momentarily spooked lol. Went here Saturday for the first time. I was really impressed by the ambiance and drinks. We ordered food which took a long time to come, without updates. When we asked, we were told it was a rough night for the kitchen. When the food came, it was quite good. However, the big problem is that a large rat climbed up on top of the bar counter. He almost looked comfortable sitting there. He then ran behind the liquor bottles on the bar and around the floor for several minutes. He even climbed over a woman's leg. A lot of patrons relocated on their own to the outdoor tables or deli tables upstairs. Staff didn't try to calm patrons, apologize, or comp anything. I want to support a good local restaurant, but I'm concerned about how they handled this incident and how comfortable that rat seemed sitting on the bar. read more

But DC Vegan has so many good options that sound incredible, so I know I'll be back. I got the artichoke bowl with a small side of pasta salad. Both were excellent, flavorful and fresh. The portions were generous, which I want when I'm dropping $25 + tip on lunch! I went on the earlier side during a weekday and the place never got crowded, so the wait for food was what you'd expect from a Panera (think fast casual). For all craft cocktail lovers -- THE BOTANICAL BAR IS A NECESSITY!!! Tried it here with some friends and everybody had very unique cocktails with CHARACTER!!! The flower of life was not for everybody, and was earthy, but for those looking for something botanical it's like nothing I've tried before. I got the Italian split and it got better and better as I sipped it. We snacked on the fries Italiano and they were an excellent tasty snack while we drank. The service was 10/10. I've heard lots of good things at DC Vegan, so I was very excited to try it. Their menu was overwhelming in the best way. It says it's a deli, but it's so much more than just boring sandwiches. Each item seemed very creatively put together. I had the eggplant parm, which was so good. I also couldn't resist their dessert case and had to try the lemon blueberry pie, which was also good. I was my family, so I was able to try their food as well, everything was great. My husband had some blue cheese that was probably in my top 5 vegan blue cheeses, it tasted so good I thought it was the actual stuff. This place is pretty incredible! A definite must try even if you're not in the area. We went for lunch time, we shared some of the appetizers. It was definitely enough food for two people. We got the buffalo cauliflower wings, the calamari mushroom, and fries. The Buffalo cauliflower wings were spectacular! I'm a huge fan of anything buffalo and these were well dressed and perfectly seasoned. Even the vegan ranch dressing that came with the dish was great. The mushroom calamari was equally delicious and a perfect complement to the slightly spicy buffalo wings. The marinara sauce that accompanied the mushroom calamari was ideal and very fresh. The french fries were hot and crispy and perfectly salted! The food was awesome - definitely try it. The service was great as well as the atmosphere. All in all, excellent experience. The meatball sub was fantastic-- the baguette it was served on was hot and fresh and perfectly soft on the inside, the meatballs were flavorful and a great texture, and the cashew ricotta was unbelievable in its flavor and similarity to dairy-based ricotta. I also enjoyed my Roasted Butternut Squash & Tofu bowl, one of their current special items. The herbed tofu was delicious and everything was a great combination together. While I'm not vegan, my girlfriend is, so I've been here a number of times. I can say that vegan or not, this place is extremely good. Their vegan cheesesteak is really good. The new brunch menu they just opened has their house-made carrot lox, which I think is the single best vegan substitute item I've ever had. My one critique is that the vegan bagel board is missing a key ingredient - bagels - and is instead served with dry miniature toasts that are honestly pretty bad. Once they get a good bagel to go along with their vegan carrot lox and cream cheeses, this is gonna be the dream of any vegan missing a bagel and lox. read more

I'm so glad we found this place on Yelp, otherwise we may have missed it walking down the street. It is on the second floor above a coffee shop. The menu looked so yummy, we had a hard time deciding what to get. We ended up sharing the king trumpet calamari which was delicious! I had the Root Veg Hoagie and my husband had the Chesapeake Fritter. My hoagie was outstanding. My husband's sandwich was tasty but so similar to what we make at home, so nothing super special and different about it. We also shared a side of fries which were good but maybe a little undercooked (I like my fries a little crispier, I guess). Been wanting to come here for a while now! So glad I able to stop by here for takeout. Almost like a coffee shop vibe/setup for the restaurant and servers are super friendly. And honestly they have many options to choose from so it was difficult but I did like it gave vegans multiple options. Several options for dessert and different cheeses that are mainly cashew based and that was honestly a first for me! I ended up taking home the cauliflower wings and king trumpet calamari and ended with a cannoli. Both were great, the mushroom calamari tasted just like regular calamari and cauliflower wings were really good. However, I felt like for the price of what I paid, the portions were really small. They are a bit high so I was expecting bigger portions yet they were pretty small (especially to be shareables). Pros: Ambiance is fantastic. Been here a couple time and I absolutely love the vibe. The cocktails are delicious! Cons: A couple times the bartender got upset when we asked to slowly open one of the Smokey cocktails for a picture, which was a turn off. We reserved a window seat but didn't get it and the host didn't acknowledge the situation. The main reason for the low review is the food advertised as gluten-free does not appear to be GF. Whenever I dine downstairs I have fantastic service. Saturday night however was a different story. My friends and I arrived around 9:30 PM as we saw on the website that they closed at 11 PM. We were completely ignored by staff until we stood by the register. The cashier informed my friend they would be closing in 15 minutes, then took my friend's order and walked away before I could place mine. Finally, once I was waited on, he informed me that it was too late for the items that I wanted to order. As we waited for my friends food, she attempted to get someone's attention for a glass of water but was again ignored. Water was unavailable as they took up the water canister before our food even arrived. If you are going to try them out, I would suggest not attending at night time or you might get ignored because they're so pressed to close. The staff downstairs at the restaurant is much kinder and attentive to customers needs. read more

I eat here all time. It's my favorite restaurant in DC. The food is delicious and the service is mostly on point. I say mostly because there's one girl who works the deli front desk who has forgotten to bring my order in the two visits that she was working. One order had to be voided because it simply never came. This was 9/23 at 630pm. That's a reflection on her and not the establishment because I don't experience that with anyone else here. Hopefully she steps up her game or gets pushed out or at least taken off of customer service because I'd probably be hesitant to go back if those happened to be my first 2 visits. I love the choice of colors for the ambience. The friendly owners with the cute dog. I'd recommend live plants inside to really "liven" up the deli. The music is a great selection. I wanted to try DC Vegan and Botanical Bar a few times before reviewing and I'm glad I did because they have only continued to shine with time. Went to Botanical Bar opening week and it was kind of a hot mess (my drink never showed up after an hour+ wait, etc). However, have been back a few times since and always have a lovely time - great service, friendly patrons, charming ambiance, good value for money. And best of all, access to the delicious items on DC Vegan menu. The top floor/regular restaurant is lovely as well, much warmer/brighter than your typical deli - and of course the smells are drool-inducing and the cheese counter is also a feast for the eyes. First of all, if you get nothing else, make sure you try the calamari - best plant based version I've ever had (and I make a decent version at home)! Both their eggplant and chickn parm are also delicious and filling. Their meatballs will absolutely keep me coming back - love how juicy, fluffy, and well seasoned and saucy they are. Would totally fool my meat loving family. Went for a friends birthday one evening and they also made a special chocolate cake that was to die for! Finally, they do a great job catering, too - a friend ordered the meatball subs, focaccia, chikn parm, and wings for a party and the packaging was perfect abs portions huge. Had their catering at a different event though and their sliders (both the bbq and Chesapeake) left me disappointed in terms of flavor and texture. That was the only miss of all of the food I've had here, which is pretty great in my view. Cannot wait for my next trip to keep working through their ever expanding menu! read more

So, I tempered my expectations when I went to The Botanical Bar, (downstairs from DC Vegan, serving the same menu) for dinner, I was not expecting to be blown away. They have plenty of outdoor seating in their streetery. I was told to pick any seat outside and a server would come out. He came very shortly, took our orders, made recommendations, brought us water. Service was friendly and fast, and the drinks and food were great. Loved the Daylily and Hugo to drink, and the Fries Italiano were ridiculously good. Just a word of warning: their side of warm focaccia is listed as gluten-free--it is not--it's a typo. Will gladly be back soon. read more
