I visited MITA for Winter Restaurant Week, and while the atmosphere is lovely, the experience was a bit of a mixed bag. Because it was a set prix-fixe that wasn't posted publicly beforehand, it felt like a bit of a gamble, and unfortunately, it didn't pay off for my group. There was very little room for accommodating dietary preferences, which was surprising for a vegetable-forward concept. It would have helped if they had made the menu public so we knew what to expect before sitting down. The Malanga Gnocchi was a letdown. As a main course, it felt uninspired and lacked the "wow" factor I expected from a place with this reputation. Overall, I felt the dishes could have been much more inventive. For a Michelin-level spot, the flavors felt a bit safe and didn't showcase the full potential of plant-based Latin cuisine. Worst Michelin star we've been to (out of 13 in multiple countries.) Honestly have no clue how they got their star. The food is atrocious to the point where fast food tastes better. Both of us are vegetarians with extensive time living in Latin America so we were excited to try MITA. Absolutely horrible, food was bland with no flavor and for a Latin American restaurant the lack of high quality Latin American wines was disappointing: Chile and Argentina have such quality products, but none of that was here. Honestly, if you want a good vegetarian meal, Burger King's impossible whopper is better than every single dish here. Save a few hundred dollars and go to the nearest BK drive through. read more

However, the ambience is just so beautiful inside and the staff is really kind and pretty prompt and I loved my experience sitting at the chef's counter, which takes almost 3 hours for the full experience so many of the dishes were completely delicious, but my favorite by far had to be the gnocchi! The main negative was lack of a proper main dish - gnocchi was not filling enough. It's just never a good feeling to leave such a meal a bit hungry. Maybe the 14 course meal is enough but the 6 course needs to be adjusted. Lastly, our entire "experience" took exactly 1 hour from sitting down to leaving the restaurant. Honestly, the food is delicious. But there's just so little of it. We went for restaurant week so maybe that's the issue... the flavors are complex and the presentation is lovely. But we left so hungry. We saw two other couples who'd dined when we did our for pizza or tacos afterward. The eggplant served with the soba noodle dish was so insanely difficult to cut so that's where things went downhill with the food. The vibe is classy and the space is lovely but it was freezing. It was distractingly cold and they couldn't do anything about it as they said they don't control the AC settings. The service was robotic - no one seemed passionate about the food and when we asked about parts of the dishes being presented their answers were scripted and didn't seem authentic. We went to Mita to celebrate my birthday , and it was our first visit. We had the 6-course prix fixe menu, and the all-vegetarian selection was impressive! Some flavors were so unique they even reminded me of meat flavors, which was really surprising and well-executed. A special shoutout to my father-in-law, who is usually a picky eater and not one to try new things--but he actually gave multiple dishes a shot and even liked some! That alone says a lot about how well-crafted the dishes were. On the downside, the restaurant was very loud, and I could barely hear the servers explaining each dish. My family had the same issue, which was disappointing since I love learning about what I'm eating. It would be great if they could find a way to make it a bit easier to hear. Unfortunately, none of us enjoyed the dessert--the flavors just didn't work for us. On a sweeter note, I received a birthday card, and they brought out a cute music box that played Happy Birthday, which was a really thoughtful touch. Fantastic experience here! From the moment we came in, the host took our coats and hung them on a coat rack. We were seated on the right side of the restaurant on a Friday night, and by some stroke of luck, nobody sat around us so it was like having our own private area. Weeks before a big celebration dinner, my boyfriend contacted Mita to confirm they could accommodate nut and lentil allergies for us. They assured us they could, so we booked their $500 tasting menu plus the $400 wine tasting pairing (totaling almost 1k for dinner for two) instead of one of the other restaurants we had in mind. When we arrived, the staff had no record of the allergies. When we brought it up again, a server asked whether my boyfriend could eat lentils if the dish contained "lentil protein," which was a concerning sign of how little the team understood about allergy safety. Things got worse from there, the very first course arrived with cashews in it, and the server told us to simply "eat around the cashew dip" despite knowing the entire table had a cashew allergy. Out of the 8 courses, 4 contained ingredients we couldn't eat or that weren't properly modified. My boyfriend ended up having an allergic reaction that left him sick for over 24 hours. We were lucky to avoid a hospital visit. On top of that, management canceled our pre-booked $400 wine pairing at the table, claiming the menu was "too modified" to pair wines, except the kitchen hadn't actually modified anything. They simply removed components and sent out incomplete plates that didn't make sense as dishes. No sommelier assistance was offered either for ordering a la carte wines since they canceled the pairing, despite one being on site and serving other tables. The staff was dismissive and rude throughout, the service felt rushed, and the overall experience was not what anyone would expect from a Michelin starred restaurant, or frankly, from anywhere. The frustrating part is that all of this was entirely avoidable. If Mita had simply been upfront when we reached out weeks in advance and said they couldn't safely accommodate us. We would have happily booked elsewhere, that was the whole point of asking ahead. Zero harm, zero foul if they had been upfront about it. Allergy safety isn't a minor inconvenience, it's a matter of guest wellbeing, and the lack of regard shown that evening was genuinely alarming. read more

The food was unique and rich in variety, very fresh but could have used spices. We went for restaurant week and got the Arepas supplement. Copalera - Came out looking like candy wrapped in edible rice paper. Tasted like a gummy bear coated in Tajin seasoning. Presentation was great but lacked depth. Arepas - Must have, wish the quantity was larger, but the assortment of breads was delicious and we loved the cashew sour cream. Gazapacho - delicious and perfect for a hot day, came out cold and was one of the better seasoned courses. Andes To Kyoto - The main dish was a disappointment. The soba noodles tasted like smoked salt. There is no way this dish was supposed to be this salty. The Bok Choy was rather mild in flavor but well cooked. The Eggplant was decent, but overall the dish needed some TLC. Cosecha De Miaz - They did not hold back on the corn in the desert. Reservations were easy to make at this location and we were greeted promptly and politely at the entrance. Once seated we got the full "fine dining" experience. Six courses with four glasses of wine. I had a fantastic meal here!!! The staff was welcoming, friendly and kind. They ask you to take your coat, normally at restaurants you have to ask if they have a coat check. And they offer you purse hooks for the table! I liked the initiative here! They also have interesting mocktails. They participated in Restaurant Week but I only found out after they posted to Instagram that it was booked solid. I would recommend the restaurant have a bar menu for those that just want to come in and have drinks, then only serve the arepa course for food but make the arepas bigger! Each arepa is made from a different ingredient and about 2 inches in diameter. Looking at my picture, from the left is a ball, then the next one I think was corn, that was the most delicious one! Please make that full size for order! My only critique is when cleaning the table, between EVERY single course, make it quick. I don't want a man hovering over me for an extended period of time, we don't need to be that close. I like a little personal space. The bathroom did not have a hook on the back of the door so I had to hold my purse while using the bathroom, not convenient. For some reason you don't get opentable points when dining here. The staff took my food allergies into consideration and made sure to still provide me with the same level of service and experience as every other patron. The staff is uber attentive and friendly. I did not have high expectations for the food, I was initially just going for the experience. However, this is one fine dining establishment that actually serves up flavor. I loved that all the dishes were based off a plants and not soy or faux meats. I was absolutely stuffed by the time I rolled myself out of there. If you're concerned about the small portions, don't be. Now I can't speak for everyone's hunger level though. I could eat the hallaca, ceviche, and poke cake every week. And as an accompaniment I ordered the arepas and wine pairings. The atmosphere is calming, modern and immaculate. The restrooms were clean and gender neutral. I was taken to my seat at the bar, which isn't my favorite, I feel like it's a single diner tax, but i digress. My boyfriend and I loved going to Mita when they were a pop-up restaurant at La Cosecha, so we were happy when they opened a free-standing location on V Street, just down the block from 9:30 Club. However, this is not a place to go if you have plans. Mita is an experience in itself. If you include the two amuses bouches and final bonbon, there are fourteen courses in which vegetables, fruits, grains, beans, and nuts take center stage. While there are a few items that made their way from their old location (the dish made of charred banana, pearled barley, and seared maitake was very familiar, as was the watermelon crudo), I was glad to enjoy new tastes, such as the arepa platter, featuring five different types of arepas with three beautiful dips. Some of the dishes feature ingredients you probably won't be able to get anywhere else north of the Mexico-Guatemala border. Many of the dishes come with stories, and I do wish the little menu we got at the end included it so I could remember the importance of the offering box that held our fourth course, a yuba, black bean mole, and celery root bite. I also wish there were more non-alcoholic drinks (or cocktails that could be made zero-proof). I'm told Mita will likely change its menu seasonally, so I'll be sure to go in a few weeks when that happens. This is definitely a splurge/special occasion restaurant, but well worth it. read more

This was a spontaneous restaurant week outing and I'm so glad I made it! The food was unlike anything I've ever had--the arracacha soup was like eating a cloud in the best possible way! We also splurged and got the area add on which were served with delicious dips. Well worth the extra cost. Their wine selection was spectacular and included a rare yet affordable Sicilian wine which I thoroughly enjoyed. Servers were very attentive and friendly. I reserved a pair of seats at the bar for 6pm using their site the night before. We showed up, there wasn't much of a crowd but it was a rainy Tuesday. The staff were extremely friendly, genuine and patient. We spent very little time waiting for food; we ended up enjoying all of the courses that we ordered a la carte, but our favorites were the arepas, the wild rice with a roasted beet slice, and the sopa (soup). In the future, if we have more time to dine, we will probably order the 6 course prix fixe or go for the full tasting menu. As vegetarians we are very happy to see a vegan restaurant earn a Michelin star, and they really earned a glowing review with their service, telling us about the dishes, and the quality and creativity of the food. Came here for my birthday and honestly it was such a lovely experience. The ambiance is very well designed and felt very inviting and comfortable. Loved the soundtrack of latin music in the background and the organic feel of the khaki chairs and plants. There was great attention to detail in each dish of the tasting menu. Each plate had impeccable presentation and told a story; and had very thoughtful flavor combinations. The great thing about the menu is that it is vegan, but the dishes make sense. No weird substitutions or vegetables pretending to be meat, just fresh ingredients and really good seasoning in a variety of traditional dishes. I really loved the arepas, the three different sauces provided were so good we ended up eating them with a spoon after the bread ran out. We also loved the soup with mushroom and the crudite. Honestly all of it was good! And our server and support team were so sweet and attentive and made it a good time.
