I finally had the opportunity to try Planta Queen in Dupont and it did not disappoint. I'm not a vegan, but I was genuinely impressed by the food, ambience and drinks. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, making it a great spot for dinner. We decided to sample a variety of dishes, and everything was deliciously presented. Drinks: Cherry smoke show and Emperor's old-fashioned. Food: We ordered the bang, bang, broccoli, thousand layer crispy potatoes, beef, and broccoli, spicy tuna roll. I came back to attend a birthday dinner and it definitely redeemed itself from a couple years ago where they didn't have any other other things that I wanted to eat so then I picked something that I ended up not really liking. This time was a little different. I had the red dragon roll and I couldn't quite tell it's vegan and not actual dragon roll of some sort. And then I also tried the thousand layer potatoes, which was nice, but I don't know if I liked it that much. And I got the Unagi eggplant which was really really good. I also really like eggplant at baseline. Other people got the sprig and run drink (it's under free spirits and it's a mocktail) and they loved it. Two of my friends got the udon and mushroom - they loved it (clean bowls). So I enjoyed it but only for special occasions. It's not very affordable to come to Planta regularly you see (or maybe I just need to have a better paying gig hahah) ... a roll and a nigiri plate came out to be over $30 ... which is somewhat typical in the expensive city of DC. In the end, we all concluded Planta Bethesda has more options whereas this one is more Asian fusion type of food (which I love). But I'm still dreaming of that miso salmon tofu from Planta Bethesda (now a year later? Also higher end prices for me and can't afford to go too often). They do only have two bathroom individual stalls and for some reason it took a while for my friends to use the restroom (she said one person was trying on outfits in there?!) and it can get a little messy in there with the trash bin, but it probably isn't consistently so... read more

Wow, I'm not a vegan, but I was BLOWN away by the food here. I thought I'd still feel hungry after eating here because of the lack of meat, but I felt I didn't even miss the meat at all. The food here were very creative, filling, and flavorful. The four of us tried the following: - Kimchi baos - the fried mushrooms were seriously incredible. I can't believe this is vegan, as the texture of the mushrooms was quite like crispy fried chicken. I was really impressed by the crispy rich texture as well as the flavors. - Crispy gyoza - good flavors, but honestly...I don't think anything can beat pork gyoza, which will always be my favorite type of gyozas :) - 1,000 layer crispy potatoes - very interesting dish. I enjoyed the caviar, but otherwise, it's just potatoes, so personally, I wouldn't get this again myself. - Dragon roll - the tempura broccoli was amazinggggg and perfectly crispy. - Torched & pressed - oh my! My favorite here so far! Sooooo flavorful. I never had truffle in sushi before, and now I'm HOOKED. I love sushi, and I love truffle, so this is double the love already. - Japanese salad - quite light with fresh ingredients. The dish was thick and filling but pretty bland in flavor. I found the Szechuan kamut wheat to be a really unique aspect of this dish, replacing the texture of traditional minced pork, but it didn't hit the spot for me. There was no Sichuan peppercorns or peanuts, which, in my opinion, really *make* the dan dan noodles. I hope the restaurant will consider adding Sichuan peppercorns and peanuts for the future... - Big chocolate chunk with vanilla ice cream - delicious. So Planta made some of my favorite drinks. I had a Delicious lychee cocktail and I also had a delicious elderflower drink. The bartenders know what they are doing. There are a number of other drinks I want to try. I had the matcha cheesecake and it was also Delicious! I must go back. The bar area was fun. It's a nice looking spot. This restaurant is all vegetarian. I enjoyed the creativity and variety of food options. However, l need my protein. The sushi was decent. This was my first vegan dining experience in a high end setting and it did not disappoint! Every time I've been, the staff has been super accommodating. Recently, I went with a group of friends and saw two other friends sitting across from our table. The staff kindly joined the tables together and were attentive the whole night. Let's get to the food! First, the crispy broccoli is a MUST!! I would come back here just for the broccoli. It's fried to perfection and the accompanying sauce adds to it. Their sushi rolls are surprisingly good and you don't even realize you're not eating meat. This time around, I got the spicy crab hand roll and wasn't the hugest fan. Felt a bit oily to me. The manager (I think it was the manager he didn't introduce himself), he sent some items to our table (not enough bao buns for our number of guests in the party). No one explained what any item was when it came to the table and finally, once the maki came out, we had to take soy sauce off the servers station because no one offered it to us. We came back to PLANTA for a birthday celebration, and it was the perfect mix of fun, flavor, and creativity. As a meat eater...this vegan restaurant absolutely blew my mind. Got a few appetizers and sushi rolls as my main entree- absolutely spectacular, delicious, fresh- and tasted like "the real thing!" Although embarrassing, I included a photo of my face/reaction when I was eating my sushi roll because it was that delicious (and it was watermelon as "tuna"). As a gluten free person, this restaurant is also extremely accommodating and easy to eat at. Many of the items can be made GF (with cross contamination as a risk), though they have a celiac menu for reference as well (with no risk of cross contamination). They had a fun prix fixe for New Year's Eve. It was plenty of food and having options was nice. The sushi wasn't their strong suit, but the other starters and entrees were quite good. The service was a bit off, I guess they're not used to being packed for a prix fixe meal. The entrees came, separately, well before the sushi, which was supposed to come first. The drinks came irregularly. Our primary server, Joey, was great--friendly, helpful, and didn't seem stressed. None of the strange service timing was Joey, were had maybe five or six different people bringing things at odd times throughout the meal. But towards the end of our meal, a supervisor, Malik, came over and basically pushed us out the door, and it was all very awkward and an unfortunate way to end what had been a good meal. Our dessert course had come well before we'd made a dent in the entrees, and the vegan ice cream proceeded to not melt but sort of disintegrate in front of us. After a long day @ DC's World Pride Parade, I knew I needed sustenance, something to wrap the day up with a warm tummy smile. So, I picked Planta Queen! Something told me to go a little bit on the adventure side, so I tried two hand rolls to start - the Spicy Tuna Hand Roll (wild card) and the Crispy Mushroom Hand Roll (tried & true w/ the taste expectancy). As a wild card, it definitely got wild! The "tuna" resembled the real thing in look but of course not taste. Get ready for a dried watermelon fruit texture, but let it be complimented by seaweed, and ginger. Let the Crispy Mushroom do its thing (as it should), and be delighted by the batter! Next up was the General D's Cauliflower. The sauce was on point, but I'm wondering if the light batter could have gotten a tad soggy from the sauce? Either way, I cleaned the plate! The most refreshing part of the evening was the Cucumber Mule, garnished and shaken with mint and house tequila. It cleansed my palate and really calmed down my taste journey for the evening. Our 2nd visit to Planta Queen (despite being dedicated meat eaters) was both a hit and a big old fat MISS at the same time. For the hit: the food at this restaurant is very good! To be very honest, I do not miss meat on the menu at all. Full stop! The food is tasty, interesting and filling. The flavors are full ranged and satisfying. To be fair, I - and the other 3 people who were with me - decided that the appetizers and rolls were better than the dishes that were meant to be main courses. In particular, we loved, loved, LOVED the Bang Bang Broccoli, the Red Dragon Rolls and the Fire Cracker Rolls! Our other main dishes were good, don't get me wrong, but we all agreed that the appetizers were the stars of this show. Next time we go to Planta Queen - and there WILL be another time - we will get a compliment of appetizers and rolls. I am quite certain that we will be happier that way! Now on to the big old fat MISS of our evening. The server was horrible (and I use that word specifically because the customer service was, in fact, horrible). From the very moment the server approached our table, bad attitude and snarkiness were evident. The server, Cris, did not listen to us, did not answer our direct questions, rolled his eyes when we asked for forks, walked away in the middle of asking questions, did not help with explanations about the food, was dismissive, spent as little time with us as possible and was basically just bad, bad, bad. Cris did not care at all about serving us. At first, we thought Cris's attitude was somehow his way of being funny, maybe sarcasm or a dry sense of humor. But, as the service continued to deteriorate, all 4 of us reached the conclusion that Cris was simply a bad server. At the end of dinner, Cris stacked up all the dirty plates & utensils right in front of me and walked off. No thank you, no have a nice night, no nothing! And, when Cris brought the handheld credit card machine for payment, there were again no niceties or thanks PLUS he stared at the screen as we entered the tip to see what it was. Seriously, Cris was the worst server I have ever experienced. Cris needs a new career choice. I will probably go back to Planta Queen. Probably. Because the Bang Bang Broccoli is so damn good. But I will only do so with a lump in my throat and I will make damn sure that Cris never waits on me again. read more

Planta is a franchise with a mission to reimagine plant-based dining, centering on seasonal, locally‑sourced produce, eco-friendly practices. Planta Queen DC is an offshoot of the brand focused on Japanese-inspired fare (think sushi, dumplings, noodles, bao, etc.) with a plethora of creative vegan dishes and luxe vibes. I made a reservation for one on a Friday night for 6:30pm, and was immediately led to my table, where the restaurant was about half-full. This Planta location is tucked into the ritzy neighborhood of DC's West End at 1200 New Hampshire Ave NW, Planta Queen has a polished, modern street-level entrance with large floor-to-ceiling windows that hint at the stylish interior. The façade feels refined but welcoming: no neon splashes, just modern signage tucked under stark black tinted windows. Step inside, and you're greeted by an Asian-inspired, with a stunning 8-foot neon dragon light hanging on the main dining wall, complemented by Chinese dragon-themed wallpaper and fun floral motifs. The interior is bathed in a warm, ambient glow, complete with gold accents and shimmering mosaic tiles, and there's ample seating at plush booths, a cozy lounge area, and an elegant bar decked out with greenery and artfully lit bottles. The menu is extensive, with plenty of plant-based options. There's appetizers, sushi, salads, entrees, and more, and many items are customizable. Some of the most famous, Instagram-worthy dishes seem to be the 1,000 Layer Crispy Potatoes, Bang Bang Broccoli, and Udon Noodles with Truffle Mushroom Cream, so I'll have to return to try those! My server was more than happy to give recommendations, though I had a promotion from the inKind app for $30 off $30, so I opted for the Japanese Steak ($33) with sweet potato, furikake, and truffle mushroom cream. This was truly one of the most unique dishes that I've ever sampled, and well worth the relatively high price tag, in my opinion. The restaurant uses Chunk Steak, a relatively new product that boasts a "proprietary fermentation technology" that delivers the texture, color, and taste of traditional meat (think of a real steak!). There's a certain pull-apart stringy tenderness that truly mimics a filet mignon, and it's a generous portion of at least 8-10oz. It's topped with a bright, acidic chimichurri, and there was a stir-fried cabbage underneath that I found quite pleasant, if a bit oily. The sweet potatoes on the side were nothing special (I would have preferred Japanese sweet potatoes as opposed to regular American ones), but dusted with a bit of red pepper flakes to add a unique heat. In summary, I highly enjoyed my experience at Planta Queen: this goes to show us that gone are the days where a vegan entree simply means leaving out the protein in a dish, or frying up a piece of Beyond/Impossible Meat. Planta Queen has an innovative, flavorful menu of unique, filling items with an Asian flair, and while the prices may be high for non-meat dishes, there are often promotions that you can find on inKind or the Planta Passport app. Additionally, their stellar service, luxurious vibe (in a nice part of DC, no less), and novelty factor of the food justifies the high price tag, and I'll certainly be back to sample some of their other dishes! read more

I recently went back to Planta Queen after a couple of years not going with three friends and had an extremely disappointing experience. While we were seated on time, the rest of our service was underwhelming, both from the kitchen and our server. Our food took a long time to come out; once the food did come out, my Singapore Noodles came with tofu; an order mix-up, as one of my friends got a side-order of tofu and the Singapore Noodles don't normally come with tofu. Additionally, another friend had clearly requested a poke bowl with no avocado, and the bowl came with avocado. We all shared the gyoza, which were fine. I split the Singapore Noodles and the Poke Bowl with a friend. The Singapore Noodles were disappointing this time, as they were thinner and had less flavor. The poke bowl was solid, if unremarkable. We all split the chocolate chip cookie and the toffee pudding for dessert, both of which were terrible. They tasted like grit and sand with minimal flavor. It may have been an off-night for Planta Queen, but I hope that they can get back to the quality level from when they first opened. From September 2023: A solid, if a bit overpriced, restaurant that happens to be vegan. I recently went with a few friends and were seated immediately at our reservation time. Our server was outstanding, and other than one person's dish being brought out a few minutes after everyone else's, we received good service. The restaurant ambiance is an undistinctive but upscale white-cloth table-vibe. My friends and I split the sweet corn dumplings, which were delicious. They had great flavor, crunch, texture, and the right filling-to-dumpling ratio. The dumplings were perfectly steamed with a great consistency. I ordered the Singapore Noodles, which were fantastic. Although expensive ($22), I got a good portion size and the dish had plenty of vegetables and good spice. We came here twice. The first was just for a normal dinner where we got their beef ans broccoli and the other was the unlimited sushi on Mondays (6-830). Everything is a but expensive but they have some stuff that is worth it. Thebeed and broccoli was super flavorful and was well cooked. Usually people overcook their brocoli but this was done just right and seemed like it was marinated for a long time. The Sushi was 30 per person for unlimited and we were fully expecting to go through a tone but we filled up really quickly. We had one of everything between the two of us and our favorite was the tuna (the dehydrated watermelon) which had a great texture and rich flavor. The others were decent but pretty similar to each other with not quite as much texture. The bar staff, who was our server, was great. She was super friendly, quick and took care of everything for us. We eneded up working at the bar and it was pretty seamless. The internet is great and there are plenty of outlets there. The atmosphere is sleek with nice lighting, plants, plenty of windows, and art that wraps it together well. If you use their app you can get some coupons too which cut the price down a bit too. Unfortunately, it took multiple attempts to get a server's attention, so when we finally did, we placed a large order all at once. In case it's not clear from previous reviews, this is a fully plant-based restaurant--here, "salmon" is actually carrots, and "chicken" might be cauliflower. While I appreciate tofu, I was impressed by their creative approach to using different ingredients. However, the execution fell flat. The bao was my favorite dish, but that was mostly due to the soft, pillowy bun. Overall, the food was overly fried or oily, and the flavors felt one-note. Stopped in for dinner with long lost friends. Even though I eat a little fish, it was nice to have an all plant menu. Grabbed some happy hour priced beer and wine while we caught up. I wanna start off by saying I was vegan in 2017 for a year and half but went back to eating meat. I also never added dairy back into my diet. This place was always on my list of restaurants to try but I just haven't gotten around to visiting. Currently upset I haven't made my way the Planta Queen sooner! Literally everything I tasted was AMAZINGGGG! I definitely need to make at least 2 more visits because I wanna try the whole menu. I tried the Crab Rangoon Dip, Bang Bang Broccoli, General D's Cauliflower, and Cucumber Mint Lemonade. The Crab Rangoon dip tasted just like a normal cheesy crab dip. The texture and taste was on point. Since I've honestly missed the taste of cheesy dips, I was pleasantly surprised! Everything else tasted great as well. Overall, I'd rate everything a 10/10! PLANTA Queen was an impromptu choice for me since it was so close to my hotel Yours Truly. I was eager to try it out because besides the name, you wouldn't guess it was vegan. The food was amazing and flavorful!! I ordered the Dragon Roll which I enjoyed so much I forgot to get a picture before demolishing it. Being a vegan restaurant, they had a substitute for traditional soy and eel sauce that still had a good taste. My favorite part of the meal was my entree - the Singapore Noodles. It was very filling and the curry base was delicious!! The onions and green peppers were a beautiful compliment to tie the dish together. For dessert I ordered the big cookie, which was the only item on the menu that I could distinguish as being vegan. It wasn't terrible, but I could tell the batter was messing something traditional which can be expected. Overall 9.5/10 experience. The interior was nicely decorated, clean, and it wasn't busy around 1:30 PM. The staff was very considerate of my seating preference so I could take a meeting in peace and quiet which was very appreciated. read more
