I have never tried de dutch and i received a coupon for the classic pancakes so decided to try it out We ordered the bratwurst with egg pancakes, the Dutch pea soup and the ham and edam cheese open sandwich The texture of the pancakes is different from the regular pancakes we usually have and i love the slightly savory taste of it. It went every well with the bratwurst. The pea soup is average but the toast of the open sandwich is very dry while the amount of cheese is minimal. This combination made the sandwich very dry. The price of the pancakes are decent but i find the prices of the sandwich is soup are on the high end which dont match the quality/quantity. I have to note that the service is VERY slow. We waited for a quite a while to sit down (with available tables) and also waited a while again to receive the menu. read more

A co-worker and I stopped to have brunch last week on the way to our office downtown. Passed it zillions of times since high school. It was conveniently on our way. Ambience is airy and bright with nice yellow and sky-blue décor peppered with small prints of classic paintings including some by Vincent van Gogh and what appears to be by local artists. It is a cute little restaurant. There was one very friendly lady serving the few patrons. Apparently it gets really busy in the late morning. Had a bit of difficulty in deciding what to order, but the lady helped us out. They make the old Dutch-style the thin and really wide pancakes about a foot in diameter. Tasted good with genuine maple syrup. The dishes can be easily customized, so it is perfect for vegans or others requiring a less general diet such as gluten-free, etc. I personally try to keep glucose and starch content down in my meals. Although the pancakes are Dutch-style pannenkoek, the menu includes benedicts, omelettes, burgers, sandwiches. There is something for everyone. One little caveat, though. The items are rather pricey, I thought (hence 4 stars). But what with the huge inflation with respect to food prices and the crazy property taxes on mom-and-pop businesses that Vancouver city hall insists on imposing, I guess I can understand. I also ordered a sausage and vegetable hash. The coffee was good and the refills were frequent. The staff was super friendly and fast. My meal tasted amazing. Came home for a much needed pannekoek plus a hearty breakfast. We had an amazing server working a full restaurant on her own but with a smile and good attitude. My pannekoek was delicious, bratwurst feeling, eggs cooked perfectly and ordered a side of Edam and sourdough bread. I was hungry! I feel like I need to describe my pannekoek a bit more. It is a thin pancake, slightly chewy and was served with whipped butter. I drizzled maple syrup over it. Yummy!!! Finished off with a cup of peppermint tea. I give it a 5 out of 5, both in service and food quality and overall customer experience. There is WiFi here, which is mandatory not only in a city like Vancouver but in the year 2018, all breakfast places should have WiFi in a metropolitan city. Orange juice is squeezed fresh and it DOESN'T TASTE LIKE DIABETES IN A CUP. That's right, it's not a sugar rush! Not all oranges squeezed will taste like dessert. Get over it, it's good for you. I ordered a glass and wish I had ordered a second because it was that good. I ordered "The Hash" which at the time of this review according to their website is: "Hash Browns, mushroom, green peppers, onions and cheddar mixed with your choice of Ham, DeBakon, sausage, turkey Bacon or Vegetarian with Hollandaise Sauce." It was freaking good is what it is, and the portion size was large enough that I could barely finish the thing. Barbara was our server and she was incredibly friendly and helpful, checking with us frequently and bringing the check and even offering some locals-insight as I'm from the USA. Coffee is refilled frequently and isn't too strong but isn't highly acidic either. It's just right for me. Price point was pretty good, $17 CAD for the dish, which at the time of this review is $13.17 USD when I convert using Google. All in all, really great, would return. read more

I am not a "hater." I try to please whenever possible. But my wife and I just ate at this restaurant and the food was awful! My wife had their specialty Dutch pancake option and i had two eggs over easy, turkey bacon, hash browns and half an avocado. I simply do not understand the other reviews we read of this place. My food was cold, the hash browns were like cardboard, as was the bacon, and the half avocado was rotten around the edges. My wife's food, the "specialty" was equally atrocious. The food also had no seasoning. The "ambiance" was non existent, really, but if the food was good I would not complain; like a mom and pop joint, good food inexpensive prices, worth it. Clean, bright restaurant with delicious food (best savoury, eggy French Toast in town) and cheerful attentive service. The coffee is always good and the refills are frequent. During Covid this slowly transitioned from "place I go to from time to time" to "place I got to 2 or 4 times a week!" They even give you two minty chocolate squares with your bill, so you can look forward to paying. And the music is audible but soft. I can't think of any negative. Since I've moved to Van city a few years ago, I've passed a bunch of different De Dutch restaurants and I've always be meaning to go to one. After all, in our family, we love our breakfast foods! And this chain looked like a Dutch iHop of sorts (or Denny's, as Issabelle mentioned in her review, below). There's something to be said about breakfast-y chains like this: typically housed in older, worn buildings, they serve traditional, unpretentious, comfort food that's predictable, reasonably priced, with very generous portions. Throw in a friendly server straight out of "Alice's Restaurant", and you get the picture: this place is like a old-fashioned diner, with a bit of a European/Dutch twist on the pancakes they offer. My kid and I dined here for breakfast a few days ago. Upon entering, a smiling lady greeted us and told us to sit wherever we wanted. She was the only server working at the time, but the place was fairly empty. My kid and I sat at a window table. The place had a homey vibe to it. The building was definitely older and worn around the edges but it felt like the old Howard Johnson restaurants I used to go to as a kid in upper state New York and Vermont. So I was feeling nostalgic here. I ordered my usual boring breakfast of eggs and hash browns with a side of bacon (I LOVE how you can order a half portion of any meal on their menu! This was perfect for me! And even my kid noted, a half portion is still bloody huge. We couldn't even come close to finishing the hash browns and I left a piece of bacon, too). My kid had the "peach Melba" Dutch pancake and she loved it. (It's thicker than a crepe but thinner than a typical American pancake). Love that they have free wi-fi here. Our service was quick, the prices were very reasonable (especially considering how huge the portions are!), and we really enjoyed our down-home Dutch-esque breakfast here! read more

De Dutch reminds me of a European Denny's, but more expensive. If you've read any of my previous reviews, you know by now that I'm really into brunch/breakfast joints. I don't think I would have tried this place unless my boyfriend wanted to. We were able to get a table right away, but it took about 15 minutes before our server greeted us, and that was after we got up and told the hostess that we hadn't been checked on yet. Usually that wouldn't bug me, but we were in a bit of a rush that day. Service was fantastic after that. Since this was our first time dining here, our waitress had some great recommendations for us and let us know that their pannekoeks are what De Dutch is known for. They have your basic breakfast menu - eggs, ham, bacon, sausages, and of course their speciality pannekoeks (pancakes). I ended up getting the big breakfast which included 1 slice of pannekoek, bacon, sausage, ham, eggs and toast. Everything was tasty, don't get me wrong, but it didn't blow me out of the water. The pancakes were a bit different from the Dutch pancakes I'm use to - the Dutch pancakes in California are less fluffy and more crispy. Not sure which is more authentic. The pancakes here were good but I was more impressed by the perfectly cooked eggs (over medium) and bacon. The coffee was good as well. The restaurant has probably been around for a while since it's a bit dated but it has it's charm. The servers were very attentive and came by to ask several times if everything was okay and refill my coffee. read more

No cutlery at the table, so I tried to get our server's attention several times & finally had to get up to ask her, to which she casually said "sorry, shoulda grabbed them with the menus". As I headed back to my table, she was right on my heels with the cutlery & bumped me as I was sitting down, another casual "sorry". Yeesh, wait for me to sit down before you head to another table will ya? My hash pannekoeken barely had hollandaise sauce but other than that the food was fine but really not up to par. We were really happy to see Barb and the restaurant doing well and seeming like it made it through Covid and the challenging economic conditions intact. Four hours and a 4km walk later and I am still really full after eating 3/4 of my pannekoek! For those who have previously commented that the price that they charge for a "pancake" is outrageous, um, this is a pannekeok not a pancake. It is kind of like saying that the price being charged for an egg is outrageous when you have been served an omelette. I ordered a savoury pannekoek with turkey bacon, mushrooms and cheese. The pannekeok looked like a crepe (but with a different flavour) and easily filled a 12" plate. It was nicely garnished with extra slices of melted cheese and tomato slices. Despite the fact that it doesn't immediately look very daunting to eat, every bite had bacon, mushrooms and cheese incorporated in it. Our server was very pleasant and the kitchen seemed really efficient cranking out the food. Point deduction for being understaffed and not offering up coffee refills and more hot water for the tea. read more

We waited for about 25 minutes before getting a seat. The hostess appeared a little frazzled. "What do you want to drink." Was it...a question? Our server was friendlier, which was good :) We ordered the Pannekoek with debakon hash (him) and the hash with ham with eggs on top (me). Did you know that if you cut a pannekoek into square inch bites, you will end up with 113 of them? So says the menu. The Boy got distracted by cutting shapes out of his ginormous pannekoek. It was pretty tasty too. Fluffy and a little eggy, and not needing too much maple syrup for extra flavour. The hash was similarly tasty. Prices are a little steep for breakfast, but the portions are quite large. read more

It took years for me to step into De Dutch, thanks to the kitschy, IHOP-looking exterior. Tragic, wasted (but slimmer) years. Here's the thing: this is so NOT a generic pancake place. These pancakes are somewhere between a crepe and a pancake: thin enough to roll up around your choice of ingredients, but more substantial than a crepe. The choice of toppings is also far wider than you'd find in a crepe place, and skews more toward a traditional North American breakfast menu. Our favourites: Eggs over easy with real maple syrup. Or the granola and apple -- again, with real maple syrup. The kid-size pancake is a mountain, and always thrills them. Now that I have foresworn white flour as my mortal enemy I almost never order my own pancake when we go here, so I've tried some of their other items. The egg hashes (basically, eggs plus yummy stuff on top of a pile of potatoes) are good -- a better and more interesting option than you'd find in a lot of places, but doesn't rock my world the way the pancakes do. The service has been consistently friendly and efficient, so the only thing keeping it from 5 stars is the kind of generic atmosphere, and the prices, which are a bit high for what it is. read more

Be wary! I went here with my boyfriend and his friend. We all got the DeSausage and eggs and a few hours later we all had stomach problems. Two of us got scrambled eggs, one of us got over easy. For most items, the prices are a bit higher than IHOP. The food did taste good, but none of us appreciated the "issues" we encountered. I first heard about this place from my white friends way back in high school... (no racial).. then i thought to myself.... "what the F#$K is a Pannekoek!?" A Pannekoek is a Dutch pancake, similar to the the American one but the size of a 12" plate and a thinner!! mmmm. The menu was pretty big so i had a hard time picking what i wanted.. I'm more of a sweet then a savory kind of guy so that narrowed it down a little.. I finally chose Chocolate, Strawberry and whipped cream! Very delicious and rich! A breakfast specialist but open until early afternoon with lunch menu available. Founded by a Dutch immigrant, it retains some of its original atmosphere and all of its Dutch menu including their signature pannekoeks, fun to eat and something different, if not as filling as their breakfast platters which are also more familiar to North American diners. Not fancy but fair value for money from a place with a genuine difference and a welcoming atmosphere. I have eaten here since 1980 and have found their standards consistently high thanks to the long-time management and cooks as well as waitresses who could give lessons on how to do the job. Their compliance with COVID protocols has conformed to the rules of the day and that includes passport scanning now. read more

I am coming regularly to this place as I used to live in Holland half of my life. I really like the pannecakes. They are tasty. I tried also the wraps and I like them too. The restaurant looks a bit outdated but it gives it a bit of charm somehow. The two waitresses are very friendly and efficient. I love this place, it is my favourite breakfast place. I always get the Mexican omelet with salsa and cream cheese, comes with hash-browns and fruit salad and toast. It is fresh, not greasy at all, and they give big portions. I also love how the give large tea pots for your tea, so the tea last longer. read more

This restaurant is an example of the arrogance that has been increasing in restaurant owners recently. All of the meals were around $15, but none of them were particularly big or fancy enough to warrant that price. I've attached pictures of what I ordered. It looks decent, but the sourdough toast was burnt, and everything was painfully salty, perhaps to mask the fact that the food didn't have any particularly special flavor to justify its price. The owners of this chain are obviously trying to squeeze every penny out of those of the city who are rather financially illiterate and don't understand that a mediocre breakfast is not worth $15 per plate. Just don't go here. You'll save yourself a lot of money, and you'll avoid having to chug water for days to flush all the salt from your body. read more

*****WORST LOCATION EVER !!!!!!****** Just simply appalled at the service at this location. I'd sooner drive 30 min out of my way to delta than ever come back here. The waitress argued with me when she brought out my son's meal, telling me that was the kids pannekoek with apple sauce. Actually, waitress with the blue streaks, you have TWO kids meals - one with apple sauce and one with cut up apples. And we ordered the one with cut up apples. Perhaps you should get to know your menu and at the very least CHECK before you're trying to tell the customer that they are wrong. Every location I have visited offers soy as a dairy alternative but apparently the kitchen at this location does not have any "to spare". This location has a very bad smell. Decent place! Pretty old fashioned, small and quaint place. Service was super friendly, we got our food relatively quickly. Ordered the Chocolate Strawberry Pannauckooken(???) Lol! And the Dutch Toast. Both were excellent! Super yummy. My only complaint was my fork had a bit of an odd metallic taste to it that effected my breakfast. Total after tip was 36$ CAD. Well it's a Vancouver staple, and their pannekoeks are delicious. The apple cinnamon is my favourite. Service is spotty though and over the years it's gotten a bit dingy inside. Prices are a bit high for what you get. Avoid the lemonade as it is made from a powder. read more
