I have high expectations at a restaurant with a fixed menu so coming here (per ThePointsGuy's recommendation) had me on the lookout for disappointment. I was proved wrong instantly. This place sits in a park just outside the chaos of the center of Amsterdam. We sat outside for lunch, and did not feel pressured to do anything. Also, it wasn't stuffy or imposing on our meal from the moment we were seated. The tasting menu was affordable and divine--a meal with fish and vegetables was light and perfect. We skipped out on the wine pairings, even though they have tiered versions based on number of glasses instead of caliber of wine, but had a sparkling Riesling from the Netherlands which was to die for. Overall, the service was incredible, the food delicate and still mesmerizing, and overall an outstanding meal and experience. read more

I had read a lot about this place and some friends of mine had been. In some magazines I had seen pictures of the lovely interior with a clear Piet Boon signature. And like everything this man touches, Restaurant De Kas became successful. Anxiety took hold of me: is this one of these hip and trendy places in Amsterdam, where the customer serves the personnel? Or one of those places where the quality of the products is not as important as the make-up of the servants? My curiosity beat my anxiety and during a business trip I decided to go to De Kas with one of my colleagues on a Tuesday night and had a very nice surprise: the service was very accurate and the food just delicious! This restaurant focuses on serving fresh ingredients (the Dutch word 'Kas' means greenhouse) and these ingredients taste absolutely lovely. There's just one 5-course menu (actual price EUR 47,50): a 'selection of small starters' followed by a main course and dessert. The wine list offers nice wines for a fairly reasonable price. And the public that one night was very nice. Not only was the service accurate, also very friendly and good-looking. And the interior well everyone can judge for himself, but I really like the warm modern Piet Boon style, but some of you might have seen a bit too much of him. Further features: for EUR 125 including wine you can eat at the chef table in the kitchen (didn't try that myself), there's a 4-course lunch menu for EUR 35 and the wines go from EUR 25 to 100. This restaurant is best reached from the main road by crossing a modern little bridge into a couple of large greenhouse-like buildings in a park. The decor is interesting and reflects a stylish utilitarian use of space, something quite common here in Holland. There is a real greenhouse next to the restaurant where some of the herbs are grown. I had the 5-course chef's menu, which was around 50 Euro. I have to say that the place had a rather economical way of serving the 5 courses as 3 of the courses arrived at the same time as the first course. All were delicious though the portions were a little small. It was very much an inventive style of semi-fusion food, with interesting use of Asian and western herbs. The main course was hare, which was not so great, though it was well-cooked, but the meat was a little gamey and could have done with hanging a day or two longer. The dessert was quite tolerable and unremarkable. The wine list was not brilliant either and quite pricey. Overall, I cannot say that I would queue to come again, although the place does have a brave policy of serving an unannounced fresh menu every day which means that the diners will have to trust the chef, which is what I did. Would I do it again? Well, maybe, but I have to add that 180 Euro (including tip) for a dinner for two here wasn't the best value dining that I've encountered in my life. read more

De Kas is a large restaurant and nursery, located in a former greenhouse on the outskirts of Amsterdam. The concept is based on serving only food produced on associated farms around Amsterdam. There is an annex with an herb garden that you can visit in between courses. The food is a healthy and organic 3 course fixed menu, prepared meticulously and presented with lots of attention to detail by the attentive service. The inside spacious and hip, as is the crowd. Hands down one of the best meals we had while in Europe this past summer. Service was great - we started with a local Dutch sparkling white wine and fresh cucumbers/pickles and olives, overlooking the amazing green and lush property. Then we were brought into the greenhouse like restaurant with windows everywhere. We had the tasting menu + wine pairing. It was amazing. The ingredients tasted so fresh, and the flavours were fantastic. We had a blast. Will come back for sure if ever in Amsterdam again. read more

Fantastically fresh ingredients; after all, they were picked from the greenhouse less than an hour before serving. We had a soup, a salad with a slice of smoked beef, an endive heart, and seared fish over sauerkraut and mashed potatoes for lunch. Very flavorful but not overly heavy or buttery. Afterwards, the waiter walked us through the greenhouse and I got to see the herbs and some of the veggies used for our food. Great restaurant! I enjoyed a lot my visit to de Kas. It was a company xmas dinner and everything was great, good service, great venue and very nice food. We had the most wonderful lunch here. We were staying at the Moevenpick- and took tram 9 out to the Hogeweg stop. From there it's a quick walk to the park where De Kas is located. Go early and take pictures of the building and the garden beds. The inner greenhouse is also very interesting. We are so glad we made the trip. Our server, Brenda, was fantastic. She explained everything to us, and the pacing of the food was perfect. From the olives and bread, through the 3 starters (2 veggie arrangements, and a soup), to the main dish- a delightful plaice, with pasta, olives, tomatoes and a fabulously flavorful eggplant slice- the meal was perfect. I can't imagine how it could be any better. This restaurant deserves all the wonderful reviews it has garnered. I've eaten at the French Laundry, and often eat at Chez Panisse, and this is the equal of any great restaurant I've ever been to. Lunch and 2 glasses of wine ran us 90 euro. A very fair price for such a wonderful anniversary celebration. read more

Wow! The entire experience from making the reservation through dessert was amazing. I knew it was a "risk" for me to dine here based on others reviews that it isn't a spot for picky eaters. However, the staff was extremely accommodating. Cindy, our server, made the experience as great as it was. So much so, she brought out a dish that I was to picky to even try, and she replaced it with another dish immediately. She was friendly, informative, accommodating and witty. The food was great. Here for a five course work dinner with wine pairing. The space is fun, open and fresh. The dishes were all amazingly well done. Fresh local ingredients, paired well with the wine they offered. The cheese plate was my favorite, I couldn't stop eating the local gouda they offered. They accomodated our patry of 15 easily and service did not suffer. read more

This place has a great ambience. It is like eating in one big greenhouse. Most of the items on the menu are grown at the restaurant. Their vegan food is very healthy and flavorful. All of my courses consisted of many different vegetables. When I yelped for pasta to accompany all of these vegetables, the chef cooked it and the server brought it over to me in a flash. This is our second time at this lovely restaurant. A great concept with greenhouses adjoining the restaurant. Everything is fresh and I believe the produce is all organic. Everything is grown there or locally acquired. Service is outstanding. The food is excellent and very unique. It will make you love vegetables if you don't already. a very beautiful location, super cool concept and great staff. but thats kinda where it ended for me. we had the chefs menu - one of the courses of which was particularly offensive. it was a cold beet soup with - OYSTERS! basically it tasted of snot. the wine pairing was wonderful and i cant really fault the rest of the courses, but the soup was so bad, its all that stuck out. if youve had fine dining in france italy spain etc, it just doesnt hold a candle. read more

What am amazing treat. I planned to go here for a hen weekend (I was the 'man of honour') and De Kas did not disappoint. The building is a greenhouse where they grow a lot of the produce that they put in the food. We had a set menu which was incredible. First course was a seafood soup which was divine, full of flavour and texture. We also had guinea fowl which I'd never had before but was cooked to perfection, and a delicious crispy salad. The main was monkfish which is one of my favourite dishes and again this was fantastic. The dessert was a sort of pastry which cream and fruit, very good again. Don't go here if you're on a budget as it's very expensive, I think we paid £70 a head. It was really amazing and a very fitting way to spend our first night in amsterdam. Arrived in AMS on a Saturday afternoon and was able to book the kitchen table two days later. Beautiful setting and the service was incredible friendly. Each new staff member who delivered something to our table introduced themselves and shook our hands. That wouldn't happen in the states! All beverages were included in the cost and they were very generous with the wine and bottled premium water. The restaurant was fairly empty when we sat, just before seven, but was full a short time later. It was fun watching the kitchen rev up and push plates out. One of our dishes was a garden platter- literally. Edible flowers and just picked vegetables. So different and interesting. Food was very good. Simple presentations. Very dutch. After out mains were served, we were taken on a tour by one of the chefs. That was fun and we got to sample a few more deceivingly edible plants. If you can try the leaves of an oyster plant, do it! After 5 hours there, we closed down the restaurant and could not even finish the dessert wine pairings, we were so satiated. Plus, we had to ride bikes back to our apartment. read more

All of the courses were exceptionally prepared and presented. The only fault is with the service if you are having anything other than the standard offering. Order a bottle of wine and that's that. Tell the server you will be trying many of the single glasses and you will need to flag down everyone from the bus people to the maitre de to get another glass. Skip the dessert and go straight to the extra cheese offering which costs more and you are suddenly below everyone's radar. read more

What an exceptional restaurant! Fresh vegetables are grown in site in the greenhouse and then prepared with the meal. Every night, a different, fixed menu is offered. We enjoyed a chilled beet soup, fabulous salad, and roasted pulled beef, as our appetizers. Our main course was an exceptional sea bass, cauliflower, roasted cauliflower puree, and barley. We finished with a delectable cheese platter and yogurt ice cream and rhubarb. We opted not to do the wine pairing, which was fine. The service was friendly and informative. The best meal I had in Amsterdam and probably one of the best in my life. Upon arriving at De Kas we knew we were in for a unique experience. The restaurant is set back into a park and is inside a greenhouse. We arrived a little really and walked around the park before entering. The three course meal came in three waves but was more than three courses. We started off with some olives and marinated cauliflower when we sat down as well as some bread. For the appetizer round 3 different appetizers came, each with a portion for each of us. All of the food was amazing. The service was spot on as well. The server was attentive and very accommodating and we did not feel rushed at all after the meal was over. Can't recommend this restaurant enough. read more

Best meal ever!! This restaurant has amazing food, all farmed by the restaurant itself. You eat inside of a greenhouse in the park, which is beautiful. While it is expensive, it is so worth it and could be priced so much higher for the quality and taste. There is only a tasting menu, and you don't get to know what you eat before, but don't let that stress you out. They served a few things that I wouldn't normally order, and I loved them all. Living in San Francisco, there's no shortage of fine dining and casual places -- but De Kas is not really like anything I've seen here or anywhere in recent memory. It's located in a beautiful park, the building is a greenhouse, and the decor is simple and modern. The menu is comprised of a few courses, and we opted for the wine pairing. Each course was delicious, clean-tasting, and representative of Amsterdam (everything was grown on procured onsite or nearby). Even the wines we chose were local!
