We were looking for a dinner experience well in Amsterdam. Found this place on yelp. It's a quaint little restaurant family owned and ran in a 400-year-old building. It's very small. Very romantic lighting, beautiful dinnerware and silverware. We had 8 course dinner service, which we had never done before. It was so delicious. Every bite was amazing. I can't even begin to describe the party in my mouth, and the beauty was just amazing. I'm sharing some pictures of my husband and I and some of the foods that we had. But the thing that made this restaurant, the best was the people who ran it. I cannot begin to explain now amazing this meal was... exceptional! I know they don't have a Michelin Star, but I think this exceeded meals I've had a star rated restaurants. I'm glad it isn't, too much hype around those star rated restaurants when they usually fall short of expectations!! The restaurant is in an old Dutch house, I believe from the 1600s. So cool! They have limited seating, it's quite small. Be sure to book online well in advance. From the moment you walk in you can tell it's going to be great! How authentic and cozy it feels. All the staff do a great job to make you feel like family. Our server Harry was amazing. So funny and knowledgeable! Dinner we decided to do the 8 courses. Everything single one was so well thought out and flavorful. The dishes were very unique. We did not do the wine pairing, but that was an option. We just did a champagne to start and a glass of wine during the meal. Also ended with a nice after dinner liqueur. Harry provided great recommendations. I have never experienced anything like this. Wanted to do at least one fine dining restaurant in Amsterdam. After doing lots of research, we picked De Silveren Spiegel as it looked like one of the best restaurants in the city! Can safely say that was the case. Decided to go with eight course tasting menu, as it offered the most variety. Came with North Sea Crab, Beetroot, Scallops, Trout, Veal, and Red-Legged Partridge as entrées, and Milk and Honey and an appropriately-named Dessert as desserts. Really enjoyed the food, the portions were pretty sizeable for a tasting menu and the presentation was very creative. For €145, this was well-worth the price. Service is great here! Everyone was extremely friendly. We were well taken care of. They carefully explained every dish so that we knew what we were eating. I am honestly bemused that De Silveren Spiegel only has a recommendation on Michelin, as I think that it is definitely worthy of one Michelin star. This was my second time dining here, this recent visit we got the 8 course menu with wine pairing and WOAW. Our waiter was phenomenal, such a treat. Visiting Amsterdam for 2 days after a Viking Cruise down the Rhine, we made reservations weeks ahead at this Michelin Star restaurant. Glad we did. Great 1614 historical building with high class vibe. Family owned and run for 25 years. Super friendly and hardworking waitstaff. Chef' is very creative with 5, 7 and 8 course offerings. Small plates are visually captivating and explode with tastes both novel and recognizable. Sea bass with clam came with an amazing sauce. Main course of quail was rich and satisfying with a savory brown quail sauce. Portions even for the main course are small but we left fully satusfied. Dessert was a beautiful apricot ice cream concoction that was described as an homkage to Van Gogh's sunflowers. Our party of two got a great meal and experience for around $300 (US) which included, for each, a glass of delightful Italian white wine. Worth every penny read more

Celebrated our anniversary at this lovely restaurant. The building is historic from 1600s, and very impressive. It's beautiful. On to the food. We had reservations for 8 courses + 8 wine pairings. Everything was delicious. I don't remember much of what i actually ate but rest assured, they were fantastic. Presentation was impeccable. The artistry of each dish was a sight to behold. This restaurant is a wonderful dining experience. Set in a 400 year old house, it is step back in time. The host is pleasant and welcoming. Our server, Harry Potter(yes that is his real name) along with his associates explained the delicious dishes they served. This place is a gem, and one that I think deserves a Michelin Star! So first of all, the chef is super young. He's 25 years old, and his father is actually a server there! Also this place used to be a home, turned into a restaurant! The decor is fancy, and they have beautiful silverware and plates. It looks nice and homey at the same time. The amuse bouche dishes were amazing and full of flavor. They set the bar real high with them. The beef tartare with caviar was amazing. Also set my expectations real high because of it. It is so flavorful, and one of the best beef tartares I've had! The vegetable dish next was also amazing. One of the most flavorful vegetable dishes I've had. I wish all veggie dishes tasted like this, because I would totally eat it every single day! Next was the sole with mushrooms. Very good and flavorful, and I love sole. There were a few other dishes that were alright. The dessert was also really solid. Overall a really good dinner. I do think that the service really slowed down though in the latter half, which I think was because it started getting busy. The only bathrooms are on the 2nd floor, up a long and extremely steep staircase - say steeper than 45 degrees (steepest I've ever seen) with marginal places to hold on. So it is absolutely impossible for a wheelchair, and virtually impossible for someone with two canes. Yes, it's an old building, but there are many fixes, and they have not chosen to do this. So I have to reluctantly give it 1 star. Updated review: owner explained that they use the hotel next door for handicap bathroom. But we didn't know this at the time, so had to leave quickly. Seems like this should be routinely addressed in reservation confirmations. read more

So, I'm not a stranger to this restaurant. Found this place about 5-6 yrs ago and was and still is star struck! I LOVE this place! It is unique with its ambience and personal touches are everywhere. I especially love this place is bc it's consistent! the price point and the quality of food they served deserve to be in the Michelin star tier yet affordable. Harry, Jim and the young chef plus the crew really puts out the welcome mat to diners with unique and flavorful dishes. Amazing restaurant putting out some delicious dishes! We chose the 5 course menu, which started out with 3 amouse bouche that were all unique bites. I thought the first three dishes were the best of the meal. The vegetable terrine was probably one of the best vegetable dishes i've had at a fine dining restaurant and the lemon sole was incredible. I opted for the lamb dish but felt that it wasn't up to par with the earlier dishes. Still the meal was a highlight of our Amsterdam trip. The decor is also very unique in that they've maintained the look of a traditional Dutch restaurant. The service is also very formal but still warm. They took the time to explain the dishes. We went hear in April 2017. The meal and service were so fantastic that we made a reservation for our son and DIL to go a few days later. They also raved about their experience. So when we were coming back to AMS in mid 2018 with another couple, Hubby and I thought this would be a perfect place to end our trip. And we were right! We made a reservation a few months ahead of time. On that evening, it was a nice night, so we sat at a table outside. Every course was impeccable. A place of amazing history, character and pretty fine food too. I spent a lot of time working in Amsterdam. Between staying at the Crown Plaza and Renaissance, it was hard not to be enchanted by the location. I saved up my meal money to eat the 5 course menu with matched wines. A coworker asked about going dinner and when I told him what I was doing, he said "why not". We sat outside and it was a much better meal than dining alone. We also added some jenever to start. It was a perfect evening for the location and service. The food was very good. Generally, fine dining in Amsterdam is like fine dining was in the 80's in the more well known food centers of the US and Western Europe. De Silveren Spiegel is kind of caught up in the same time warp. That said, the ingredients are very good and the food is well prepared. It's expensive, but not out of line for what you get. I recently came back and brought my wife. We dined indoors and had the 4 course meal. It was a very nice evening and my wife put it at the top of the dining we had in Amsterdam. read more

I was staying at the Renaissance for one night due to flight cancellation. It was quite cold so I had no desire to walk around. There were two modern Dutch cuisine restaurants nearby. After checking their menus I decided to dine at De Silveren Spiegel. Tasting menu with wine pairings sounded appealing. I had the five courses set. There are also four, six and seven. I came alone so was lucky to find a table at 7pm. In future, best call and reserve ahead. The service was near top notch with three gentlemen working the dining room. Nice delft plates, silverware and crisp linen. The tasting menu was nice but as expected. Fresh, local ingredients all put together to deliver contrasts in texture and flavors. The highlight of the tasting menu was the wine pairing. Each one was WS90+. The whites were particularly nice. The full meal took about 2 hours. read more

It has everything you could want - it is high end without being pretentious, the wait staff is amazing, the ambiance is wonderful, and the food is out of control delicious. I don't even know what I ate half the time, but it made me wish I had ordered all 6 courses instead of the 4 that I did order. Let's start with the setting - set in an old Mayor's house (whose last name was Spiegel), it is small, intimate, and well appointed. We got the whole story about the house from the waiter, which helped us feel like this was more than just a meal, it was an experience. And now for the place settings - they were amazing. I felt like I was eating off plates that kings used - real silver silverware, gorgeous napkin rings, beautiful plates. I loved it! The food, overall, was one of the best meals I had during my stay in Amsterdam. Just listen to me and get all the courses, with the wine pairings. I know it seems expensive, but it will be worth every penny. My husband only got three courses while I got four, and he was green with envy when my extra plate came out. They keep the wine pouring, and make you feel welcome. We sat there for easily 2+ hours, got to meet the chef, and made friends with the table next to us. And the dessert, amazing! Get the apple soufflé, you won't regret it. Overall, if I could give them 6 stars I would! I will be coming back on my next trip to Amsterdam. read more

What a night! My wife and I booked a month in advance (you pay a deposit, but get it back on your bill when you dine) and we're glad we did because it soon was fully book 2 weeks before our trip. We went with the seven course meal with wine pairings. Every dish was fantastic (some a little too sophisticated for my palate) but the experience was wonderful. We booked the last spot for the night and after our meal the owner was nice enough to show us around and give us a little history of the place and some of its paintings. We were lucky enough to get a table at De Silveren Spiegel during our visit to Amsterdam. Boy, what a great way to end an already amazing family holiday! We ordered the 4-course tasting menu, which included a veal appetizer, a scallop course, a beef course, and a strawberry dessert. Each course presents the main ingredient in different ways. For example, the scallop course featured a whole scallop as well as an absolutely mind-blowing scallop souffle, complemented with garnishings of course. Just the right combination of intriguing flavors, interesting preparations, and recognizable, local ingredients. Bravo! I want to especially recognize and commend the way De Silveren Spiegel accommodated our complex allergy issues. One of our kids is allergic to peanuts; the other is allergic to seafood (yes, we hit the jackpot...). Both very severe. I asked in advance whether they could accommodate us, and again when we ordered. The personnel and the chef went above and beyond the call, in a way that was both professional and caring. For our son, they substituted a delicious-looking quail course for the scallop entree. For our daughter, we only asked them that they not use almonds in the strawberry dessert (we worry about cross-contamination). That would have been enough for us. Yet, they went the extra mile, and replaced her dessert with a different one, I assume so as to preserve the integrity of the chef's creation. Wow! Being half French and half Dutch (living in California), I'll honestly say that I've never known Dutch food as being that interesting. De Silveren Spiegel changed this forever, it was a well executed 8 course tasting menu that was french-like without being french, using Dutch ingredients and inspired food. The young chef did great and the price was reasonable given the service and food delivered. The wine pairing was ok without being great, but it was also priced reasonably (good wine pairings can easily cost 120-200E or more while that one was only 60E for 8 pours, which is very reasonable). read more

I went to this place at the recommendation from my hotel concierge. For starters, the ambiance is great. Its a 400 year old house in Amsterdam, and is perfect for romantic dinners. I was seated promptly, was 1 of 5 tables in there, and the wait staff was attentive. I ordered the 8 course as I wanted to try everything, and my initial courses came out promptly. I can't drink wine, so I asked for some Irish Whiskey. The waiter had a difficult time understanding which of their whiskeys was Irish. I get that this is a mainly wine place, but surely you'd know which of your 5 whiskeys was Irish. I had a glass or two, and the waiter would ask if I'd like another when I was empty. As the place started filling up, the service got markedly slower. The wait staff started running up and down the stairs to attend to the guest upstairs. They started talking to each other across the room at more of a hurried pace. They were in the weeds. I paid no mind as the food was AMAZING. Seriously. I wish I wouldve loved the rest of the experience because the food was to die for. Anyway, when they got in the weeds is when the problems started happening. I was served course 6 of 8 at around 2 hours and 15 minutes after I had gotten there. It's not that it was a prolonged experience that made me mark them as 3 stars. It was the fact after about 1.25 hours in to my time there, they stopped asking me for drinks. They stopped filling my water. They stopped coming to the table to pick up dishes. Hell, they never cleaned the crumbs off of my table the entire time I was there. The only came to the table to drop off new food. My whiskey glass went empty for about 15 minutes. I made a comment to the matre'd that I'd like another Whiskey, I'd been dry for a while, and (jokingly) suggested they bring me some in one of the large wine aerators filled with Whiskey. I figured those were subtle enough hints to tell them to keep them coming, but after that one, 20 minutes had passed and no one came to me to ask about drinks of either Whiskey or Water. At this point I had just finished my main course, I could barely maintain a buzz, and I decided to give up. I asked for my check and did not partake in the last 2 courses. On the way out I told the matre'd that I was disappointed in the service. He assumed I was talking about how slow they were -- which truthfully was not an issue for me -- then in a patronizing manner explained 'this is fine dining sir, it takes time'. I explained to him I was disappointed that they couldn't keep my glass of whiskey full, when they were so eager to ask others about more wine, and he told me 'this is Holland sir, we don't ask you for anything, you have to ask us if you want something'. Now, I don't know how much of that is true - especially since they were attentive to me in the beginning of the meal, I've been here only a few days, but if it is then I feel bad about fine dining in holland. Having to chase down waiters any time you want your table cleaned off or your water refilled is frightful. I'd suggest going here when they first open. The food is really top notch -- but stay away during normal dinner hours. They really drop the ball when the pressure is on, and don't own up to it. read more

Just enough to make it fresh, but not so much as to hide the classic foundation. Interestingly, the first courses were familiar, like comfort food whipped up by mom but presented creatively deconstructed. There's a theme here that begins with the the familiar and then elevates you gently to each new dish, to the perfectly executed classics. Our only regret, it was apparent the timing got off to a bad start in the kitchen and never came under control.
