If you come here to order, please be aware that, in my experience, if you're a person of color, they may make your order last. I came here and noticed that the person who ordered after me had multiple plates, yet their order was prepared before mine, even though my order was only one item. They also prepared an online order that I heard come in after mine, and that order was completed before mine as well. I found the experience concerning and felt that I was treated unfairly. Have come here for years for the Carne Asada or Pollo Asado Fríes. Rolled taquitos good & tacos good. Today we ordered TWO burritos. One green chile & one where specific request was: shredded beef, rice & cilantro only. Unfortunately the shredded beef had pico de gallo added vs just green "cilantro". I get sick with onions & no to tomatoes in a burrito. The green chili burrito was excessively hot & it burned my stomach & the regrets lasted into the evening. Hands down BEST place to get nachos in Oceanside. The bean and cheese burrito is SOLID too. They're generous, friendly, great music always playing (especially when they are playing love songs), the chef is always doing his thang and the girls are GREAT. Low C-Tier Mexican food. I got a California burrito and a large Diet Coke for $16.32. Refills are $1.75. Eeek. The burrito was pretty flavorless, and the salsas they gave didn't add much. The cheese wasn't melted in the burrito. This a low 3, bordering on a 2. Service: What you'd expect. Ambience: What you'd expect from a hole in the wall place, bordering on the grungy side. The creamy avocado salsa verde (was) outstanding that they served with your meal - (now it is no more) was replaced with ordinary tomatillo salsa. SAD!!!!!!!!!!!! (Been a customer for over 14 years!) However, the green salsa has not changed according to the staff. ???????? My main beef is that what you order you should get. I ordered the rolled taquitos served with lettuce, tomato, and guacamole. I had high expectations for this place as they share the name Kotija with Kotija Jr. Taco Shop out in Encinitas which serves hands-down the best fish tacos I've had in north county. I do wonder if they are related somehow? On this day I only ordered three carne asada tacos. The price for each seemed kind of high (almost $6) but I wanted to try them anyway. They were "okay" - nothing spectacular. Each taco came with two corn tortillas, so we actually divided one taco into two separate tacos but an easier bite. Still, I would have prefered a street taco style, for half the price for each. Service was good, and quick. They gave me three red & three green salsas which was nice, as well as a grilled jalapeno. Sooooooo gooooood! Came with my husband and 2 kids. Kids had a chicken taco and carne asada taco, good amount of meat with 2 tortilla each. I had the 2 beef taco combination with rice and beans. These come as hard taco and not able to do soft. Omg they were soooooo good! Beans were good and topped with Mexican cheese blend. Rice was also yummy but does come with veggies in them. One of my kids didn't want them because of the veggies. My husband had the chicken enchiladas. The plate was packed with food. He also liked them. The mole sauce they use is sweeter which is true with mole. I'm not a fan of mole but my husband did like it. We also order chips and quac. It was fine but the only thing was that it came out like nachos. I was expecting guac and chips on the side. Instead it was chips with quac on top with a bunch of cheese. The cheese on top made the kids not want them. Regardless it was fine. Both salsas were good according to my husband. He said the red one was spicier but also kind of sweet. This is a wonderful place. People are very nice and the food is just awesome! The prices are what they are. Everything seems to cost a little bit more. But these are very big tacos which thrilled me. Thank you so much Lorena. I guess this is an addition to the last time I was here because it won't let me do another review. It's just letting me add to the current review so this taco one was from last week and today I got the quesadilla picture to follow. Now they charge almost 4 dollars more for shrimp, but I have to say that it is cooked perfectly and juicy and there's plenty of of it. So I think totally worth it. However, for a quesadilla, it seems kind of lacking in the cheese department which surprises me. read more

I was in the area visiting someone who had just moved nearby and figured I'd try this place. My go-to is a California burrito. Theirs was really big, so you get a lot for your money, but it was a little bland, which was a surprise considering I was in SD County. But the big reason why I am going with two stars is because there was some dishonesty. I had ordered my burrito with my credit card, which they post has a $0.75 service fee, which is fine. Immediately after ordering, I realized I forgot to order one of their Mexican Cokes which I wanted and didn't want to incur a second fee since it would be a second transaction, but luckily I had a $5 bill. I ordered it, she said $4, and I gave her the cash. However on my way out, I noticed that the POSTED price for the large Coke was $3.25, so I got up-charged for it for the exact amount of the fee. Maybe she assumed I was again going to pay with a credit card, but when I pulled out cash, it would've been the right thing to do to charge me the correct amount. Not a life-changing amount of money but the cashier didn't have a lot of integrity if she did that. read more

I've been a customer for over 20 years and they have a new cashier that is stingy with the hot sauce. I ordered 3 Burritos and a combo plate she only wanted to give me 2 hot sauces and 1 bag of carrots. I spent over $50 and had 3 Burritos ! 2 Hot sauces is not enough for 3 burritos and a combo plate I don't know who trained this lady but she has no customer service skills. She also said 1 bag of carrots per person I told her I had 3 burritos and a combo plate obviously all that food isn't for just 1 person. She was just being stingy. Oh man I forgot to write a review on this place but back in the day only about 6months ago this used to be my spot. It may be small but I was in love with their California burrito and the price for it. Even though they have a very nice size menu I always got the Cali burrito because it was just that good. There are a few tables out front and about 5 tables inside. The employees are nice and helpful which is always welcomed. This spot is hardly ever busy so its nice and quite so that's pretty nice too. Doesn't look like they have customers from the outside but when i was there, customers were coming in and out ordering tons of yummy food!! I had the pollo asado tacos and they were huge!! They were really yummy as well, though I will say therapy is really juicy so I wished they would drain it a bit before the put it in the tortilla. The others I was with ordered carne asada burritos, they said they were really good. My sister ordered a chicken fajitas burrito and unfortunately it was so juicy/ greasy, flavorless and had many tough chicken pieces. I've been coming here for years and I've always gotten their Carne asada burrito a certain way. I've asked for no guac but have them add beans instead. Normally, there's no problem. The past couple times, they've messed up my simple order. The first time they added BOTH guac and beans and my burrito was super soggy!! The second time I went, I explained what happened and asked the cashier to make sure there was NO GUAC, but add beans. THEY ADDED GUAC BUT NO BEANS!! WTF?! It's a simple enough order, but the cook must be new and can't follow directions. I'm not going back any longer. The food is too expensive for them to keep messing up. The food here is pretty good, but they are sneaky to get you to pay more than the posted prices. They have a little hand-written sign that says there is a 75-cent charge for a debit or credit card. Then they charge you tax on the 75-cents. They then flip the screen around asking to add a tip and the girl sits there and stares at you to see if you add a tip. Overpriced and my California burrito was dry af, only meat fries and pico de gaio, no cheese, no sour cream, and no guacamole. Also pico de gaio doesn't even belong on a California burrito. My brother ordered carne asada fries and they smothered it completely with guacamole, leaving him to scoop it off. The fries were also extremely crispy. I've always seen De Kotija while heading into Grocery Outlet but wasn't exactly attracted to its outside appearance. It looks like a dingy hole in the wall, which I discovered upon visiting, it is. It isn't terrible but the overall cleanliness is lacking. I was cautious but had read good reviews on Yelp and decided to give their food a go. I ordered the carne asada fries with Mexican guacamole (with onions and tomatoes) as opposed to American guacamole (just avo with sour cream... ick). It wasn't expensive, but the taste of the food was just alright. I was surprisingly not very full after my plate full of fries, meat and guacamole. This is my go-to place for Mexican food. Good food at very reasonable prices. My favorite is the chile verde burrito. (Which is not on the menu but they will make it for you if you ask) It's a really big juicy and spicy burrito. No Frills environment and I happen to love that. read more
