Grandchild loved the rice and beans

My husband and I visited Coeur d'Alene, Idaho to see our new grandchild and son who moved there 3 years ago. Our grandchild loved the rice & beans and she is a fussy eater. Wow this is the best Mexican food I have ever eaten and we live in California where Mexican restaurants are on every street corner and this restaurant has better Mexican food than in Mexico. Mexicans own this restaurant and they serve family recipes that are authentic and use quality ingredients. Matt the restaurant supervisor checks with customers about their order and service & he is an asset that adds a layer of excellence in customer service. We recommend De Leon's Mexican Restaurant 1000%

Wow!!! Where do I start...... I guess I'll start with this being the worst tex mex I have ever had. Not even close!! After ordering at the counter like a cheap fast food joint I was asked if I wanted chips and salsa. Much to my surprise I was charged $4.99 for them. Big pile of chips and 1 small bowl of salsa. Our food came out looking nothing like the pics. The pollo ala crema wasn't close to any I have ever seen (Not Good) Received a small plastic cup for self service water and self service for utensils napkins ect. but prompted for a tip at the time of ordering. Never checked on us even once but after getting the food I don't blame them as I had nothing good to say to them. If you're looking for poor service and horrible food this is the right place. 1 and done for us. I have included a picture of the pollo ala crema that didn't even come close. Very expensive for small amounts.

Best carne asada I've ever had, and I eat a lot of carne asada. Sauces were a little thick, but the habanero was on point.

Is DeLeon's a sit down/served restaurant or is ordering from a menu on the wall and you return to pick up orders?

Both. You can order takeout if you want, but they have a full restaurant.

But pay no heed and do yourself a favor and just go eat here. The staff is the sweetest. We are a vegetarian party so we ended up with veggie burrito, tostada salad, tacos, fries, and Horchata. These guys don't skimp on ingredients. I asked for extra rice and they didn't charge me. Horchata was perfection. Try their salsas--both Roja and verde which they keep in the drinks fridge. Don't judge a book by its cover.

Chips and a spicy salsa are complimentary. The Enchiladas come with a red or green sauce, so I chose the green. It had a great flavor and the enchiladas had plenty of cheese. However, the inside was lukewarm and the cheese was not melted. You could still see the shreds. I took them home for another meal. As to the tacos, they fry their handmade corn tortillas and they have a good flavor. Unfortunately the ground beef has little to no flavor. Luckily I had salsa left over and used it to spice them up. They come with plenty of shredded lettuce, diced onions, and two types of shredded cheese. They have 8 tables and they had a steady stream of customers for both to go orders and dine in. The restaurant is clean and average noise level.

The food looked beautiful and we got the Box OG (pork), elote cup, mulita and TJ sticks. For the pork tacos, you don't really taste the pickled red onions much. I almost wish they had a stronger flavor because really all you taste is the pork and whatever salsa you put on. The creamy cilantro salsa was very good but we could definitely pass on the spicy roja, the flavor just wasn't for us. The pork itself was okay. As for the elote cup, I think we're a little spoiled after having elote in Arizona which was absolutely life changing. Because of that it's hard to say this one was amazing. It felt more like a watery cup of roasted corn. The cheese on top was good but once you got past that it kind of tasted like canned corn. Our 3 year old liked the mulita which was a win. The TJ sticks didn't seem fresh so they were just okay. Overall it was decent for the area but we've definitely had better. The building is newer looking and nicely kept, just watch out for the big pothole when entering the parking lot. Also their website says they're closed on Saturdays but they were open when we went and we let the drive thru employee know. Service was friendly enough.

When we walked in, the place was pretty busy and the live soccer game was on their TVs. Not only was the vibe poppin', the decor was just as bright and festive. The restaurant isn't huge so when it's busy, it can get a little tight. There isn't table service so you place your order at the walk-up counter. They had their menu super-sized and it took up an entire wall! It's always nice to be able to clearly see the menu. I got 2 fish tacos and an order of cheesy nachos. My roommate got 3 carne asada tacos. Even though it was busy, it didn't take noticeably long for our food to come out, which was positive. At a glance, the fish tacos looked good. However, at $3.50 per taco--I felt the filet was pretty thin. The ratio of fish to tortilla was more tortilla than I prefer. The taste of the fish was okay and lacked flavor in my opinion and I didn't care too much for the crema it came with. That's where the salsa bar comes in! I liked how I could try each of their salsas without wasting an entire sauce cup. The habanero salsa was nice and spicy and the guac had a blended consistency with decent flavor. I was excited to try the beans but in the end, I felt they were bland and lacking season. I was pretty disappointed the salsa bar didn't have pickled veggies either. The cheesy nachos were good, as long as you ate them fast enough before the cheese cooled down. If there was any suggestion, I would make the nachos a blend of nacho cheese and actual shredded cheese to give it that extra texture and flavor. My roommate said his carne asada tacos were decently good, but also thought it lacked flavor. In general, our first visit was a bit underwhelming considering the overall lack of flavor we both agreed on and for the price we paid--basically 5 street tacos and cheese nachos came out to 27 bucks.

It's not like in Los Angeles where you can't walk 1 mile down the street without tripping over a taco truck. That being said, I think the Mexican Food Factory (MFF) could hold it's own even in SoCal. Here are some reasons to try it; 1. Fresh ingredients. Especially the taco sauce. It tastes like it is made that morning. Seasoned but not overwhelmed with habanero or something. Delicious. Meats are not oily but still very tender and juicy. Ground beef is even juicy and tender. Did I mention the fresh taco sauce? 2. Cooking style. It's fast and made to order. Wait is short but realistic considering they are making your order as it comes in. Nothing prepared and sitting under a heat lamp ahead of time. They even toast the soft tortillas which is a huge flavor enhancer. They don't have gourmet ceviche or swordfish tacos but if you like distinct and discernable flavors in your meals it works here. 3. Small shop vibe. Cinderblock style place with an eating area outside at least as big as inside. Bright murals painted upon it. It's next to a road but traffic is slow and not too noisy. Clean as can be. Same employees in the kitchen for many months. 4. Value. If you shop around and are honest with yourself, I think you will agree that prices are not nice to us now. I don't know where else to find the quality of ingredients, speed of service, and no drama atmosphere at these prices. The daily specials are the way to try a lot of different things over time with a cost savings. Taco Tuesday crunch-fest awaits. Improvement? Yes of course. Open on the weekend please. In the name of all things Holy. We need our after church enchiladas. Also small size street tacos are needed. Radish, lime, cilantro, cotija crumbled on Lengua on a 4 inch soft tortilla. I'll take 6 of those to go down to the lake for a nice lunch. Por favor.
