I dropped my vacuum off at 11 AM. I have had a Dyson for a few years that I haven't used for the past year and thought today would be a good day to get it fixed. Jack was friendly and polite as well as the lady up front. He tests my vacuum and tells me the brushes are still running, I just have a clog and it should be ready this afternoon. Okay, thanks I said. He says if you get a call from this number it's me. Okay. 2 PM I get a call from Jack. My vacuum is ready. He said my fan was broken $50, he cleaned it from top to bottom and it's a brand new machine. Great. He takes a while to tell me the price saying how he took his time yaddah, yaddah. .....$229 for everything. I hang up, research a price of a new vacuum and my particular vacuum is $299 on amazon aaaand it's 3 years old. He only had the machine for 3 hrs and he was saying how labor intensive it was to fix. I asked him why didn't he call me to agree upon the price before he started working. He said most people who have such expensive machines just say fix it and he fixes it and it's my fault-- I should have told him to call first... in the same breath he says he couldn't have called first because the way the machine is designed you have to take it apart with special tools and he was already "in it" (aka he wasn't planning to call me anyway). He says his friend in NJ sells my machine for $400 and $500 and I should be happy he fixed it. I said I only paid $300 and I can't justify paying 2/3 of the price to get it fixed. I was definitely not expecting such a costly service. He basically got upset and is like oh well I will just sell your machines if you don't pay and I will get my money back. THIS TYPE OF BUSINESS IS A SCAM!!! You cannot do that to people. read more

I found my mother-in-law's 1966 Singer Touch and Sew, but could not find the original foot power cord. Instead of ordering a Universal pedal on Amazon from who- knows-where, I contacted Jack. He was pretty sure he had the right pedal for it, although the machine is over fifty years old. I decided to bring it into the shop to have him look at it and see if the pedal worked. It ended up being an ORIGINAL pedal. We tried the machine on the spot and it worked! I fully expected to have to leave it at the shop for a cleaning and overhaul, but as I waited, I chatted with Jack about the integrity of the machine, and he oiled it up on the spot. He sold me some needles and bobbins, and the specific zigzag foot, and he gave me a quick tutorial. I obviously came to the right place. I had a very good experience with this place. It's run by Jack DeSorte, who is very nice, and it specializes in Hoovers but they also service other types of vacuums as well. I have an old Hoover vaccuum that works very well, but on which the on/off switch broke. For $30, this place not only got it working, but installed a new metal switch that was more durable than the awkward plastic switch that came with the model, so that it would not break in the way the old one did, and they also gave me some complementary bags. The new switch is actually much nicer and more convenient to use than the original one ever was--so I feel like they've actually improved the vacuum, making it more durable and usable, so it's like I'm getting an upgrade. They were very fast too--very quick turnaround (about an hour) from when I dropped it off, which was great because my place was very dusty and I needed to vacuum! This place also carries a wide selection of vacuum cleaner bags, so if you have a need for an esoteric type of bag, this would be a good place to look. And...for reference, they also do sewing machine repair. I love supporting businesses like this that repair appliances so that people can keep using them rather than--it helps support the local economy and also helps reduce waste and thus reduce environmental impact. I highly recommend DeSorte's! Mr. Jack is very knowledgeable. There was something clogged in the vacuum that was making the belt burn out. He identified the problem and had it all fixed in less than 15 minutes! He even had some tips for me as far as regular maintenance on the machine that I should do to keep it working well. Quick and simple..The owner went from a man my mother often went to to purchase or repair her vacuum. He seemed to be a professional and polite person however upon telling him vacuum belts were burning out because of the metal bar he got upset. Noone was blaming him but no reason to purchase 2 belts and have it burn out in a matter of 20 mins..He says well it shouldnt be getting hot. Im aware of this but instead of fix the problem he keeps selling us belts and then gets an attitude when I tell him I will put the belt on myself since he wanted to add an extra 10. I asked him was he having a bad day because normally he doesnt act like a miscreant and he says well I didnt think I would take the vacuum apart and not put it back together.He removed two screws and as well as that this issue was going on for a bit.He was rude and arrogant pretty much when we entered the store.He was absolutely our vacuum store but NO MORE! My recent transaction with De Sorte's Vacuum Cleaner Service began as many others, with a quick search on Yelp. This guy has positive reviews and sounds to be cheaper than other repair shops in Philly. I bought a Singer 66 sewing machine as a gift for my wife on Craigslist that I knew needed a tuneup at least. While he may be less expensive, you get what you pay for from this guy. I'll start with the positives from this transaction and then move to the negatives. Jack was friendly and welcoming at first and offered same day repair of my antique Singer 66 sewing machine, "stating that no one else knows how to work on these machines, but I do." I felt the machine was in good hands and left it with him to tune up and repair. I brought in a working machine with what I thought would be minor issues. I needed a bobbin cover and the light cord to be fixed, these things I knew. He didn't have the bobbin cover, so I drove to store he that he called in NJ to get the part I needed. Upon getting to the store in NJ, I am buying my bobbin cover BUT also a new power cord for the sewing machine as well. Jack didn't call me to let me know, just called the store and said that I needed this item as well. Scam? I don't know, but the machine wasn't in perfect shape but it also was in working order electrically. Later, I bring the parts I bought in NJ back to Jack to repair the machine and he tells me that the footswitch is not working either and that I need a new one. Mind you, this footswitch had worked previously before I brought in the machine. This was my second surprise buy without a heads up or phone call regarding needing replacement parts. Jack then tells me to come back in an hour to get the machine as he finishes working on it. I come back to pick up the black sewing machine and it now has a seafoam green motor on it. It sticks out like a sore thumb visually. Due to this machine being a gift for my visually particular wife, I was concerned. I stupidly took the machine home with me feeling overwhelmed spending more money than I initially thought due to the fact that it had worked before I took it in. After being told that it's hard to find motors for these machines, I didn't thank I had much of a choice in the matter. I called Jack on the drive home to see if I could paint the motor to match the black sewing machine. He said yes I could but to be very careful whilst doing so. Upon reflection and some internet research, I found replacement motors on multiple sites for under $50 shipped. Instead of trying to paint the replacement green Kenmore motor with extra wires hanging off it (which looks like it came out of something else all together), I called Jack to see if I could bring the motor back in exchange for a little cash back. I had high hopes that he would be reasonable with this request since things started so friendly the day before. How wrong I was. Jack tells me that he did a lot of work and that he should have charged me way more for his time and effort and that I was "bumming him out". He then promptly hangs up on me. Totally unprofessional. I'm partially to blame for this transaction and shouldn't have left with the motor that I wasn't happy with but to be responded to in such a manner is infuriating. This coming from the man who offers a year warranty on his work on the machine. I will not be taking the machine back to him if it needed service. Sure, I paid less than I could have if I took the machine elsewhere but to receive such poor customer service doesn't make up for the money I saved. read more

I am not a yelper but i decided i had to write a good review for this dude cause he deserves it. he's super honest, straightforward and easy to deal with. he fixed my sewing machine after i'd taken it to Keystone in Northern Liberties, who did not fix it right and actually seemed to mess it up more. Plus, the people at Keystone are weird and not nice at all and they're not open on Saturdays. This guy got my machine running like NEW! and he can do it for you fast if you need him to. Took my old, beloved and trusty Kenmore sewing machine for an overdue check-up and oiling. Jack took a look, gave me a ballpark idea of cost (depending, of course, on what he ultimately diagnosed). I went out for breakfast and in about an hour Jack called to say it was all done. Price was altogether fair, right in the original ballpark, even including a new bobbin case -- and he gave me the old one so I could see how it was worn out compared to the new one. The timing on my sewing machine was off (Singer), Mr. DeSorte was familiar with the model, knew what the most likely problem was, and fixed it for me the same day for a reasonable price. This gentlemen is a crook, he is dishonest and a BSer. I took my Singer in for an estimate, he said it simply needed a "tune up" and that it would be $40.00. I came back and the bill was $120.00. I asked him why, he said because of the know how, and because he replaced the tensioner - a $20. item, I researched the item price. The guy is totally dishonest, if you have no other choice, make sure you ask for an actual price upfront and tell him not to make any repairs without prior approval. But really, he over charged me and basically told me it was because of his "know-how". read more

I've never written a yelp review before, but this place is amazing. I brought in my econo-model 15 year old Singer sewing machine that was having all kinds of problems. Jack called 30 minutes later to say that he had replaced the broken parts and advised me not to fix a minor issue because it would be expensive. He explained everything that he did and showed me the stitching before I left. In one hour, I had my baby back and running better than it had in years. There is a 2 month warranty on repairs. Plus this place has been in business since 1950 and it was right in the neighborhood. $70 was a bargain for such good work. read more
