I've been here quite a few times since the shop has opened and each time have left unsatisfied. For the amount of hard earned cash I drop each time going here i find myself questioning why i keep coming back. What brings me back is either the outrageously priced, but tasty 11$ salad or the quick service, or maybe the location. This coffee shop seems to be doing well right now but i have a feeling their success will soon come to a halt as shops open back up after covid. If you're going to be the most expensive shop in town, you have to have something to bring to the table. The layout of the coffeeshop is cute and the lighting is gorgeous. Lots of people were here studying and the atmosphere was peaceful and pleasant. However, the menu leaves much to be desired. Food is overpriced (as per typical coffee shops in the Santa Barbara area) and the coffee isn't anything special. $11 for a small sandwich? Seriously? I got a caramel macchiato but it tastes more like milk with a drop or two of coffee and the cup was more ice than coffee. The "Vietnamese coffee" isn't anything close to authentic Vietnamese coffee... so I'm not sure why it's named that. When I asked the cashier what made the coffee Vietnamese, she couldn't give me an answer. The manager came out and tried to further explain, but her explanation was disappointing as well. Just because you add condensed milk doesn't mean it automatically qualifies as Vietnamese coffee. This is a pathetic whitewashed attempt. Anyone that's had authentic Vietnamese iced coffee would know that this rendition leaves much to be desired. My boyfriend had to add espresso shots to his and it was still subpar. Go to Spudnuts if you want Vietnamese coffee that actually gives you a caffeine kick or better yet - go to a Lee's Sandwiches or 7Leaves. Disappointing overall. The coffee here has never been great, but I feel every time I come it just gets worse and worse, especially relative to local competitions. The baristas are poorly trained and don't know how to steam milk nor pour it into espresso to make a latte. Lattes are always thin, watery, and flat. I could make a better latte on my home espresso machine. Baked goods are pretty standard (average), but "for here" means pastries are brought out on paper plates. Pretty amateur move. Finally, let's talk about the ambience, which is this place's one redeeming quality. It's a cool spot that has so much potential, yet you walk in and get the sense the owner may be a micromanaging busy body overly concerned about posting passive aggressive signs and such, about what you can and cannot do, and less concerned that her baristas are properly trained. If you want good coffee and good vibes there are so many better places to go nearby! Dune on Storke, Dune on Calle Real, Old Town Cafe on Hollister, Lighthouse on Hollister and Turnpike, not to mention good ol Starbucks which actually can (sadly) make a better latte 50% of the time than what you'll get at Dean. I recommend to the owner the following: 1) properly train your baristas; they can't steam or pour, and until they can, your product will always be inferior to your competitors; 2) I understand people shouldn't be eating outside food, but be more subtle about it; nobody wants to feel they are being yelled at by a sign; 3) focus on the product; the menu may be too long and have too many things going. My go-to has always been an unadulterated, black, kick-my-ass, straight up coffee and Dean's beans (another alternative name?) and brewing technique deliver every time. Latte lookwarm and unremarkable(not bad or good) and the wifi is unacceptably bad. Good vibes here, but im trying to get stuff done and utility trumps vibes for me. Been there several times. Hot drinks like latte's are good, the espresso is smooth but doesn't stand up well to ice - very weak iced lattes. The Vietnemese coffee is a disgrace! It's just American coffee loaded with a flavored creamer, I threw it out. Try Trung Nguyen Creative #4 with sweetened condensed milk, that is real VIC. They should rename that drink before anyone else gets ripped off. I don't like how sometimes you can't see the baristas make the drinks. One time my iced latte tasted very watery, I think they dumped the hot espresso over ice instead of cooling it with milk first. But I don't know because there's a barrier. Other than that employees are nice and it's a very clean place. Still waiting though for a cafe to come around that serves strong, rich European style coffee. Came here during their soft opening amidst the Covid pandemic, and service was friendly and quick. Ordered a drip coffee, espresso, and a vanilla latte to drink. Perhaps there are still adjustments that need to be made to the coffee (not 100% sure the vanilla made it into the drink), but very excited for its potential! They serve food too. There was a pastry display and grab and go lunch items in a refrigerated section. For food made to order, there are different toast options but my wife and I opted for the butter/jam and avocado toasts. Best butter/jam toast that I've had. They were also very generous with the amount of avocado spread on to the toast. Yum!! The cashier was very helpful and the order was made quick. The shop seem clean/sleek but borderline cold/not homey. The atmosphere seems very study worthy. The dirty chai was not my preferred sweetness level but my be good for those who like a more spicy chai. The hazelnut latte was refreshing but I couldn't taste the hazelnut all the much. I tried this coffee spot on a Friday afternoon and it was dead. So why was the service so bad? I been wanting to try this place out because of the reviews and was excited for their iced oat milk chai. When I walked in there was no line and the girl near the espresso machine seemed annoyed. It took her a while to acknowledge that I was there. I went in to try the iced oat chai latte which was ok. It lacked flavor which I don't understand because there was some powder mix that still was visible, yet basically paying close to six dollars for watered down oat milk on the rocks. The girl with dirty blonde hair medium build was extremely rude to me and another person that came in after me. (I wish I would have gotten names) The brunette was friendly though and seemed to be the only one to be actually working as she was manning the register and cleaning. The place is cute to hang back and chill but with the negative vibes that some of the employees give off maybe not so much. I am willing to give this place another shot maybe a different time of day things may be different. I am curious to try some of their other specialties. read more

Just found my new favorite breakfast treat - Date & Goat cheese toast. YUM! A great coffee shop find ...modern minimalistic design inside with great outdoor seating and dog friendly. Lamont who works at the front counter is very friendly and accommodating. I always appreciate someone who goes above and beyond which is very rare to find with customer service lately. Limited food items in the menu but what they do have they do it right and of course, coffee. The regular drip is a bit weak for my liking (like stronger coffee) but the espresso drinks are better. This is a very cute coffee shop in a quiet area. I was able to quickly find it easily and park easily, which I appreciate. I ordered a vanilla iced latte with oat milk and it was ready incredibly fast. Unfortunately, the taste was "just okay." It was a bit watery in my opinion and I've had better iced lattes at other local coffee shops nearby. They do have a large selection of drinks and flavors though, so maybe I just got the wrong thing this time. Or maybe it was just an off day for them? Not sure. I got my coffee to go but there are plenty of spaces to sit both inside and outside for studying or coffee dates. I went at around 11:30 on a Saturday and it was pretty full but I could've found seating if I really wanted to. Wonderful coffee. Had a 16 oz NF Latte. Normally, I am led quite disappointed by local coffee shops because the 16 oz lattes are mostly tasteless due to the larger size. It's not their delicious oat milk dirty chai I love the most, although it's one of my favorite drinks in goleta. Or the welcoming feeling you get when walking in, with the super intentional and adorable decor... or the big windows with tons of light and clean white tables just asking to be overfilled with whatever someone has brought to work on or read. Or even the giant patio and side porch (perfect for phone calls to not annoy people inside).. It's not even the awesome workers who seem to genuinely enjoy being there. My favorite part of Dean is when I get home later that night and realize I've stashed candy from their perfect (for me) candy tray in my bag and totally forgot about it until then. Came in to study on my birthday and ordered the matcha with lavender and a jalapeño bagel with cream cheese. Not only did my bagel come with two bottoms and no jalapeño (should've just ordered a plain bagel), the bagel itself was so thick and cakey that i couldn't eat it. i got confronted by an employee for having a bite of my snack that I brought inside the establishment because i had low blood sugar, which wasn't an excuse according to the employee (maybe manager). One of my absolute favorite places to work remotely, get a good quality coffee and a snack on occasion is Dean's! I first heard about this place from a co-worker and friend of mine who had nothing, but great things to say about the place. I had to experience it for myself and it did not disappoint! I have been here throughout this year and have never been let down by their amazing items. This time around I decided to get an Iced Mocha with a splash of raspberry flavoring to get that chocolate and fruit craving I was having today. It was flavorful, refreshing and a little rich on the chocolate which I LOVE. The space itself is very welcoming and full of open windows and natural light. They have a great outdoor patio with umbrellas as well and perfect for a sunny day with beautiful weather! Although I didn't get a treat this time around, I love getting their triple berry scones or cherry danishes with my coffee on occasion. I got sour dough toast with figs goat cheese and arugula. And plain latte. That's it! $17.00. Latte Cold Bitter yuck! Waited 10 minutes for toast while it sat on the counter getting cold and hard? And everyone after me was getting their orders. I asked the cashier for it and she said it takes awhile to cook? Weird it was sitting there? Then stood there some more. Came in two days in a row bc it was so good and the aesthetic was so cute ! On the first day, I was bouncing from getting a vietnamese coffee or a matcha latte. I ended up getting an iced matcha oat latte and it was pretty good. I tasted more oat milk than matcha, but still pretty decent. My boyfriend got a bloody orange ice tea, it was more tea and less sweet, but the flavor was good! Overall would rate the first day a 7/10. Second day, I got the vietnamese coffee, my bf got a hot chai, and we both got the jalapeño cheese bagels w cream cheese. And oh my god, it completely changed my review to a 11/10! The vietnamese coffee is PERFECT and i wished i would've gotten it the first day, but I'm glad i tried both! The jalapeño cheese bagel was also amazing.
