I came in from out of town to visit family when my Jeep broke down. This place was recommended by a good friend of mine so I had it towed here. They initially told me it was a bad starter and it needed to be replaced so I told them to go ahead and fix it. They then had my friend call me to tell me it wasn't the starter, the engine is actually locked up and it's now gonna cost me over $8,000 to fix it. They didn't even call me to tell me that, I had to call them after my friend called me so they could further explain. They said the oil and everything was good and they replaced the starter which was $275 but that wasn't the problem after all. I told them not to do anything else to it and I would find a way to get it home and have my mechanic back home look at it to see what he could do. My mechanic called and talked to the manager and asked him if he tried to manually turn the engine which he said he did and it wouldn't turn. My boss drove 8 hours to pick me up with a truck and trailer that we loaded the Jeep on and brought it back home. I had my mechanic look at it and manually try to turn the engine and it turned with no problem. The check engine light is on so he hooked up a code reader and the code read that there is a misfire somewhere so there is a wire loose or broken somewhere. They lied when they said they tried to manually turn it because if they would've done that, it wouldn't have done it when I got it home and someone else tried to do it. I wouldn't trust them with any of my vehicles ever again after they straight up lied not only to me but also to my mechanic. I honestly don't think they knew what the problem was and they were just trying to make a quick dollar off of someone who is from out of town because they thought I wouldn't know any better and I was trying to get me and my two kids home. I would not recommend this place to anyone if it was the last mechanic shop for 100 miles. A good honest mechanic is hard to find and this place is definitely not it. The starter that was put on my jeep was also put on with an impact and is broken. I do not recommend this place at all. They lie and will take you through the ringer. It was not driven anywhere or towed or anything. It was put on a trailer to bring it back home which was not connected to the bottom of the jeep, it was attached by the front of the jeep and tied down around the tires. Went in for an oil change, tire rotation and brake inspection. Told me I needed new brakes and for back two brakes and rotors wanted $450. Could get it cheaper elsewhere and did. However, when they went to take the tires off all of the lug nuts on one tire and two of the lug nuts on another tire were completely stripped. Whoever at Deans that rotated the tires completely stripped them when tightening to the point that if I had a flat tire I probably wouldn't even be able to remove them. read more

As it was an ice storm i decided not to test my luck so I got off the highway and planned to find a tire shop in the morning. Lo and behold as I put air in my tire I see Dean's Tire and Auto. It was 2PM so I didn't expect them to be able to help me that day, but they did. They found the puncture, repaired it, and got me back on my way. Very friendly folks, no games. We have been taking our 2 cars and 1 truck there for oil changes and other repairs, for the last several years. We have never had a complaint or problem. Always friendly and courteous. Their estimates are accurate, and repairs are completed on time. As a bonus, they have free loaner cars for local use while your car is being serviced. good kindness but lousy customer service, I say this because I went to leave my car to be fixed, just change 2 hoses, one for the oil and the other for the enterprise water that had broken on the way; and then they gave me the estimate of the repair is about $2,200. and then I took my car out of there to take it to another mechanic and they checked my car and they only fixed the repair for $250, not like the others who asked me for $2,200: AND I THINK THAT just because I come far from there, that's why they wanted to take advantage of my money BE MORE HONEST AND FAIR WITH CUSTOMERS WHO COME FAR AWAY PLEASE!" read more

Took my car in to have it be able to pass emissions and get the check engine light off. First time it cost me over $300 and they told me I am good to go on passing emissions. Not even two days later the check engine light came back on and I didn't get to go to the emissions place yet. Brought it back to Dean's and told them I was pretty upset and they offered to not charge me a $125 diagnostic fee this time. So I paid them another $110 to fix this sensor that caused my check engine light to come back on. Once again they told me I was good to go on passing emissions. Well again, before I was able to bring it to the emissions place the light came back on 2 days later. I'm not even going to bother bringing it back to them. The only good thing about this place is they offer you a car to drive while they are working on your car. read more

I brought in a set of rims and tires to be installed on my car to this shop. Instead of trying the rims on the car before mounting the tires they mounted the tires first only then to discover that they do not fit over my calipers. Still charged me $50 for labor and blamed me for causing them trouble. read more

These guys are terrible. They do not stand behind your work. I really wanted to use a local person for all my repairs and maintenance and I would drive across the state before I would use them again. Just simple things like tire rotations where they constantly broke off lugs, most likely from using an impact wrench, and charging me for it every time. The final straw was when I had them flush my radiator and they dropped a part into space between the fan and the radiator that subsequently popped a whole in the radiator and caused a $1,000 worth of damage that they completely denied any responsibility for. Never again!! Only in a small town like Chesterton could a shop with this bad of service stay in business. read more

Got a flat tire heading through Indiana a few days ago. I was towed to Tire Experts right off Highway 49, but they didn't have the tire I needed in stock. Dean's, just down the road, promised they could have a cheaper tire in by 1pm. Since I'd already burned a vacation day, I figured I'd wait for them to order it. At 1:30, they told me it would come between 3 - 4. At 3:45, after sitting in their showroom since 9am, I asked where it was and they didn't want to check. At 4:30, they told me it wasn't coming at all and that my only option was to pay almost $100 more for a model they had on hand. I wasted EIGHT HOURS in their showroom and an extra $100 and they would do NOTHING for me. Tire Experts down the road was helpful and reasonable. Dean's probably never even ordered the tire and just kept me sitting around so I'd have no choice but to buy their expensive model. read more

This must be the worst tire/service facility within 50 miles. The customer service leaves everything to be desired. The arrogance of the counter woman was despicable and she has no respect for the customer. I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy. Do not go here, you guys will get screwed. Recently had new break pads installed. However, a day later my car was resisting to go in reverse and the driver's tire would wobble. The place was closed on the weekend, so took it to Busy Bee in Valpo (which I DO recommend). They quickly realized that dean did not put on the caliper bolts. THE BREAK CALIPERS. It could have been dangerous and it could have resulted in a serious accident. So I went over there to talk to them about it. They said all they could offer was in store credit. I told them Im not going back there and kept refusing to leave until he said he would pay for the other place that fixed the caliper problem. But seriously, that is something anyone who puts on break pads should know and it all seems fishy. Do yourselves a solid and go to someplace else read more

Great location for locals. Adequate for basics like tires or an oil change. A no go for anything complicated or mechanical.

Do NOT go to these people. They charge a high price for low quality repairs. I had to get the water pump replaced, and it ended up being a $1800 bill because multiple parts needed to be replaced and they had to take the entire engine apart just to get to the pump. This wouldn't have been bad, if I didn't find out later that they had actually TAKEN out a part that they said "wasn't needed." Are you kidding me? EVERY part of a car has a purpose. Unfortunately, I had no control over this because the car was brought in by a family member while I was out of town. Now, my car is having engine problems, and all I can hope is that it's general wear and tear, and not caused by the fact that these people didn't put everything back together properly. Overall, very poor experience and I wouldn't recommend them. Especially with the whole "not needed" part deal. Sounds seriously shady to me. read more

Do NOT take your business to Dean's! On June 9, 2014, I took my car there for a $50 "AC Performance Test". They were supposed to have put a pound of refrigerant in my car, check the hoses, adjust the belt, perform a leak test, and check the system pressure. After just 10 minutes with my vehicle, the technician came to tell me that I had a compressor leak that would cost $675 to repair. I wasn't prepared to have the work done that day, and I told them I would come back later in the week. When I got into my car and turned on the AC, it blew hot like the heat was on and there was no "AC smell" whatsoever. This made me suspicious, so the next day I took my car to another mechanic to have a look. They performed a dye test and found NO LEAKS. They charged the compressor with refrigerant. It took two pounds, which it shouldn't have done if Dean's had already put a pound in the day before. I called Dean's, spoke to Dean himself, and his response was, "Bring it back so we can see what we did wrong." No thanks! I was not going to give his guys an opportunity to create a leak where there wasn't one and I told him as much. I requested a refund for the performance test that they obviously didn't conduct and THIRTY DAYS LATER, my car is still cooling while Dean Biddle has not bothered to return my multiple phone calls. read more
