I've been to DG twice now so I wouldn't say I'm a regular, but both times I've been there I've had a lot of fun. They play a lot of my type of music (yeah, old school goths will probably hate me but I LOVE EBM.) Their drinks are standard bar prices but they definitely don't skimp on the alcohol. Love that they have an absinthe bar too. If you get hungry they serve Mexican food in the club and DNA also owns a 24-hour pizza place next door (which is great for hanging out at while waiting for early morning BART). Staff is nice and the DJ's take requests. Overall, a great club. I'd go more if it wasn't so inconvenient getting back to Fremont at 2:30am on public transit. But that's not the club's fault, but the fault of BART who really needs to start running 24 hours... read more

The people are fantastic and the entry fee if you get there before 11 is usually only like three dollars if they don't have a special event going on. My only complaint is that I paid $35 for two drinks and they came in tiny whiskey sized cups lol. It's been a good 6 years since I last came here. My friend who went for the first time on her own occasion said that they were cliquish and didn't want anything to do with people who were not regulars. I didn't believe her because I remembered nothing but a good time and boy was I wrong. I got of work to go see my favorite band, so I didn't have time to do the whole makeup thing, or anything fancy...and I don't consider myself a goth, but I am an industrial fan and I can easily say without the ego that I know more about industrial music and more bands, and even about the members of each said band. (obsessive compulsive to memorize things and quiz myself, dunno why) Anyhow I get there, the bouncer treated me like I was stupid. At first he reacted as if my id was a fake id or if I was too young. (Cute, but I'm 28.) Secondly I get in to the door, the door woman who took my money was mildly rude but I was there to see the band and not her, so I laughed it off, joked with her a bit, had a laugh, paid up and went in. ...The bar tenders stood around basically refusing to serve me for a bit until they 'negotiated' with each other. I swear there was someone who was a regular that paid $4 for a beer, yet I was charged $6. So of course I'm not going to give them a tip. To them I had the plague, so they wouldn't want plague infected money anyway. Next the people. So I go in to see my favorite band. They rocked, so hard. They were fukken uber. I'd cheer, scream the words out with everyone else and fist pump and get dirty looks for being "Normal". Sorry. I'm employed. Many of the people are such regulars there that they were hanging around the staff chit-chatting, or joking around with security. Needless to say they would stop joking, walk toward me and go out of their way to repeatedly clip my shoulder or pretend to push me in a way that it looked like an accident. No joke, seriously shoving me around. The friends I went with actually shocked at how hostile people were treating me. When I was leaving it was the icing on the cake. I asked a security guard for a cigarette and he basically had this little shit fit as if I was asking him to hand over his first born son for fucks sake, then he huffed and did this dramatic hand over of the cigarette. I thanked him, but dude either give me beer or cigarettes or whatever the hell I was asking for and go the hell away. If you don't want to serve me, let me know and I'll bring my own beer, I'll buy my own cigs. just get the fuck outta my face. The part that pisses me off is that this is the only place that plays my favorite music yet everyone acts like reject couch surfers that never had any friends so they try to alienate people in order to look cool. I was just going there for the music, not your shit. Fuck this place. They treated me like I was some bum off the street when really I'm a woman just attempting to have a good time. read more

i already wrote a long review but this is bugging the sh!t outta me. in response to one reviewer who gave 1 star and said, "People didn't smile, interact with strangers, or show emotion on the dance floor. I think I'll stick to clubs where people actually have FUN!" where do i begin? i suppose that statement is all (relatively) true. and we could get all frivolous by splitting hairs, but i'll state it simply. it's a goth club. what did you expect? that it would be like any other club but with costumes? there is a reason it's considered a subCULTURE and not just the latest trend in black. if you don't like it, it's cause it's not your scene...no biggie. but it's not fair to suggest that just cause we don't behave in the same way as people do in other clubs and cause you weren't having any fun, that we don't know how to. course it's fun, that's why people go. duh! bottom line, if this place is not your thing, it'll be quite obvious very quickly. but think of it as a cultural barrier and don't take it personally. however, if you don't expect everyone to be smiling indiscriminately at strangers, don't assume that everyone just want's to be humped on the dance floor, and don't expect everyone to be focused on everyone else and not the music...basically if what the reviewer said seemed somewhat irrelevant to having a bad time, you're off to a good start. this response has prompted me to bump my score to 4 stars. i was reminded of just how abhorrent other clubs can be. read more

Heyyyy now...! Come on people. Death Guild is great. There is a little bit of something for everyone. Sure, there are crappy things about it and good things, but it is what you make it. Show up and have a good time!!! "Be the change you wish to see in the world"...right? (hahahahaha I know that's not totally applicable here...but still, good advice.) As a huge fan of the more noisy stuff, I've enjoyed years of DG [upstairs lounge after midnight]. I also enjoy the downstairs music here and there. I'm not saying you would, because I guess we're all different... but yeah, it's good stuff, subjectively speaking :) Most all of the DJs are super nice. Same with the bartenders, bouncers and staff. This is my favorite club of all time. I really do not understand how someone got inside and was able to take a photo without getting reported or caught though. Luckily enough, it is blurry, so you do not see the guests enjoying their "Discreet" time and having fun. I've been a DEath Guild fan for over nine years now, and it never gets dull. On halloween is when it really gets kicking and you have a wonderful hallows evening. :-) Most of the people in the scene are very friendly and they do indeed have a snobby side, but it is really image, deep down inside they are all dolls enjoying their time within the depths of what I like to call "Heaven's seduction". Wonderful drinks! Superb Dj's rocking it all night long. The security is wonderful! Simply a wonderful time to have some discreet and pleasurable fun Monday evening. Cheers! THE BEST GOTH club ever. I've started going in 2005 when I moved here from the East Cost. In fact, it's the best goth club I've been to in the US. Well there was Kitchen Club & Fire & Ice in Miami, but they're no longer in existence. I haven't been to DG as much since they moved to DNA. I really liked it over at Glass Kat. I would go there for salsa one night & Mondays to Death Guild. Quite a dichotomy. DJs are pretty cool. I love the anniversary party with their CDs from each DJ. I don't normally like to go clubbing but this place is AWESOME. I've been going here since my friend introduced it to me a few years ago. Though the location has changed, it still has the same great crowd and atmosphere. The only time I ever had a problem here was when some guy in chinos was trying to hit on my girlfriend and wouldn't leave her alone. Otherwise, I've never had a problem with anyone here. The crowd here is a lot less pretentious than many of the other clubs in San Francisco. This is easily my favorite place to go to in the city. read more

I wouldn't say I'm prejudiced, but informed. Its been a long and wonderful 18 years. Sure, I got lucky, we knew the doorman and were in 3rd and Mission before we were 21 but it wasn't long before we knew Death Guild wasn't about who you knew but how you conducted yourselves even when you knew no one. Remaining true to its original mantra-a Klub for the People by the People, Death Guild will continue to reign as America's longest running club because its built on the principle of family vs coolness, adaptability vs goth longevity and learning how to fish, if you're lucky. Never discount a full pour of Jack, an Absinthe bar, a well varied (and two dancefloors) group of DJ's, attractive dancers that outweigh, heh, and out number the opposite, and most of all, someone at the helm who cares, a King who wants to know, and shows appreciation to, his fold. But he might call you friend. Been here, you're lucky, get to return regularly, you're welcome forever, as long as you eat that salmon heart... This happens every Monday from 9 pm - 3 am. If you'd like to dance it's $3 before 10 pm and $5 after. Going to make this short and sweet. The people are great, amazing outfits and makeup!! I love meeting people here, it's a great conversation area. They have a bar in DNA Lounge, within the main dance area, and the upper floor area as well as another DJ up there. They also have seating areas within the main dance floor and a stage with seating as well. The only reason I give it a 4 star is because some of the music choices could be a bit better, it just gets repetitive with the song choice at times, besides that this place is rad. read more

I've been coming here for 13 years, since it was at The Trocadero? I remember seeing Switchblade Symphony the first time I attended, shortly after moving to SF. I usually have a pretty good time here. I tend to prefer the more swirly music to the harder industrial or EBM. Sometimes, it does get too crowded to dance, but the bars are usually easy to get to. In it's current location at DNA lounge, the bartenders pour the stiffest drinks in the city! There's always lots of eye candy, and if you don't feel like going out that night you can watch it live on the internet. read more

Very standard goth/industrial club. A good amount of space to roam around; features two rooms with different themes. After midnight, the upstairs room often plays a good variety of straight industrial; highly recommend this room. The main floor DJ(s), play a good track from time to time, but often play the same mix from previous nights, which makes for a rather boring experience at times. Overall it's a good club if you're into the scene and want to chill out as well as dance. Also, it's connected to their pizza parlor, which lends itself to more lounging space, and features the outstanding Hubba Hubba burlesque show (additional entry) upstairs early in the evening. read more

what can I say?... boring, lifeless, hillbilly-looking patrons who can't dance.... music that puts you to sleep (mind you that's not how it should be in goth/industrial clubs)...cliquish, uptight atmosphere....ugly, desperate djs starved for sexual attention from patrons and ready to pounce on any new/fresh meat that comes in (yikes)--aka good ol' misogyny/unprofessional atmosphere....they got it all. before i turned 21 this is where me and my friends would go. we'd get obliterated in the parking lot, go in and raise hell. i have countless stories from drunken nights at this place. highlights include, getting pulled over on the bridge on the way home with a drunk ass driving my friend ate a gram of bud and the cop let us go. saving my friends life, he ran up the stairs and leapt over to tap some bald lurkers head and almost fell i caught his legs, and two drunk minors failed at sneaking in and wanted to fight all the bouncers. they were laughing as i dragged one away the other ran right back at em. good times. however just remember with the beer goggles on it is a very dark place and most of the chicks were hella ugly. read more
