    Puerto Rican Platter
    Olivia K.

This restaurant has been on my San Juan list and it happened to be near my Airbnb so it was a no brainer for my friends and I to visit. Since I've always seen the long lines outside this store when I passed by, we decided that we try to go in as soon as it opened. So, we lined up around 11:30am. We barely waited much and we got seated. The server that day was quick/efficient/friendly despite the fact that she was running a one woman show. And the food arrived within a decent time. My friends and I decided to order the PUERTO RICAN PLATTER with a side of a side salad. This platter comes with everything you could want & maybe something that might be a bit adventurous for you to eat like blood sausage. Despite that, it's a nice platter to share and try a bit of everything. It's really nice that if you order for 4 people, they give you exactly the amount of pieces that are divisible by 4 (so everyone can try 1-2 pieces of each thing evenly). It also comes with a decent amount of rice/pork as a supplementation, which was nice. It's a balanced meal. And I think the side salad did well to balance out all the fried foods. Overall, we really enjoyed this place. It's a great place to come with friends/families to share. It's a great place as a visitor to try a bit of everything. The platter is a great introduction of puerto rican fried finger foods. And it all taste great! From the presentation of the food to the service here, it's all good. I would recommend this place to others.

My boyfriend wanted to come here because it was viral, everyone was talking about it. There was a line outside. Everyone standing in line said the same- they saw the popularity online. Unfortunately for me there was really only one dish for vegans- avocado with cooked vegetables, which is fine, but not the most amazing. I was given a mini side salad, and tostones. We had a mixed drink, but it wasn't that strong. Unfortunately, the entire block/sector lost ability to use water, so no restroom, couldn't wash hands. Also there was a server who was sick and sneezing a ton of times, we tried to eat as fast as possible. Because the water stopped working the entire block/sector that was lively and partying died down and turned into a ghost town. If I come back to PR, I would not come back.

Stopped in for lunch after walking around Old San Juan. We were tired, hot, and starving so arrived right when they opened around 11am for lunch. We ordered two dishes and shared (pork with rice and beans and chicken with tostones). The pork was outstanding, juicy, and a nice generous portion. The sides were also really good. The chicken was good but bland and boring. They had a few hot sauces which were clearly made in house and I enjoyed them with the meal. We finished everything and left full and satisfied! Our server was attentive and it didn't feel like we waited too long for food to come out. Two meals and two bottles of water came to $36 after tax/tip which we felt was a great value. Would definitely recommend, especially for the pork.

The food was very good but the service was not. To start off, they don't have physical menus just a chalkboard with a small list of items. They also had drink options with different alcohol and juices to choose from. My party of 4 was able to get in right away on a Friday afternoon, but it filled up quickly. The bathroom was not clean and extremely outdated. It didn't seem like they took care of it. I ordered the steak with rice and beans and it was very well made. I really enjoyed it. The steak was juicy and flavorful. My friend had the pork and although it looked good, he said it was dry. After we received our food, the server never came back and just stayed behind the bar. We waited quite a while for our check until another server passed and we asked if she could let our server know that we would like the check. She just said that our server would come back, but didn't relay the message. Instead, She started chopping up coconuts right next to us. We continually got sprayed with the juice and I got hit in the eye with a large piece of coconut shell. Our server eventually came back and we asked for the check but she continued to do other things like clean up empty tables that no one was waiting for. When she did bring us the check, she said she was unable to split it between our parties so one of us had to pay for all 4 people. Overall, the food was worth going for, but I would not return due to the service.

Charming little restaurant on the corner of two old streets, Calle de la Cruz and Calle del Sol, out in Old San Juan. We walked over after touring the castle landmark nearby at the edge of the little peninsula. It was a gorgeous day and the stroll was really pleasant We were lucky and came right after a lunch rush session on a Friday afternoon and were able to get a seat as a party of two almost immediately. They actually ask folks to wait outside the restaurant, for better or worse, and if an employee happens to notice you waiting outside, they'll inquire if you want a seat Their menu is on a blackboard that's a bit obscure in a corner- all in Spanish so it's quite an experience for non-spanish speakers to try to navigate through the options. Thankfully our waitress was very patient with us and had wonderful English and went through virtually all the menu items. After a bit of deliberation, we ironically ended up just going with the sampler platter (which if we would've decided in the first place we wouldn't have to have gone through so much consternation of not knowing what is what) I picked up a Medalla with my meal and my wife got a pineapple juice. The beer was within expectations - but the pineapple juice was incredibly fresh, and sweetened with perhaps sugar cane as opposed to artificial sweetener. The sugars were much more delicate and natural tasting - very refreshing The platter itself was more than enough for two people. We were still touring around the city and didn't want to be too full, but the portions were generous It came with an assortment of Puerto Rican classics - most of which I can't really identify lol. But in my best attempt - slow cooked pork shoulder, blood sausage (which was delicious, very little 'gamey' scent), plantains with rice, fried plantains, these other little crispy things that were also great There were these two sauces that were on each table too - one was a cilantro-olive-oil (?) mix, the other a spicy creamy sauce. Both sauces slapped. I preferred the spicy creamy one as it gave just enough kick to the meats. The cilantro based one was much more mild but also delicious with its own distinct flavor profile If you're in the area and touring around Old San Juan, definitely stop by for a bite here. It's fresh, it's local, and at good price. It's a bit of a hassle to get into the Old City to begin with so I wouldn't recommend doing a trip just for this place tldr; local little restaurant with comfort/classic Puerto Rican dishes. Absolutely worth a trip if you're in the area as it contrasts with the other much more tourist-y places in the Old City

Deaverdura is highly recommended for good reason. If you want a delicious meal in OSJ, this is the place. We did the sampler, which comes with frituras, pernil, rice, and platanos. I didn't eat the morcilla or platanos, but loved everything else. It's more than enough for two people. I especially enjoyed the pernil and tostones. I loved my parcha juice too. Our server hated us but I'd probably be over tourists too if I were them. I'd still go back anytime though and it's perfect when in OSJ.

I stumbled on this place after touring the forts of Old Town San Juan, and saw a huge line forming outside this restaurant. A quick search on yelp and I found out that this a favorite of yelpers, so I knew I needed to wait out the line and try. I think we waited about 25 minutes to get in, but the line looked to get longer as time went by. The inside is a rather small restaurant, that on the surface doesn't seem that impressive. The wait staff was extremely busy buzzing around taking orders and busing tables. We got a rushed explanation of how the menu worked, and I had to google lens translate the menu on the chalkboard to understand the different items. What we got though definitely did not disappoint. I got the Pernil (slow roasted pork) that is served shredded along with the side of Puerto Rican rice. The Pork was juicy and flavorful and paired well with the rich flavors of the rice. My partner got the Churrasco, which was a grilled skirt steak and a side of plantains, which he devoured. We also got some tamarind juice mixed with rum, which was delightful. Also of note, the prices were extremely affordable here, a great local experience to have.

Deaverdura is such a gem in Old San Juan! The food is full of authentic Puerto Rican flavor and feels homemade with love. We tried a mix of everything--fried plantains, sausages, and mofongo--and it was all delicious. Portions are generous and perfect for sharing with family or friends. The restaurant itself has a cozy, colorful vibe that makes you feel right at home. Service was friendly and welcoming, which made the experience even better. It's the kind of place where you can sit back, enjoy amazing food, and soak in the local culture. Definitely a must-visit if you want a true Puerto Rican meal in a relaxed, fun atmosphere!

I spent the day in Puerto Rico before a cruise and wanted some authentic Puerto Rican food. So many of the places in that neighborhood are tourist traps. I definitely went to the right place because Deaverdura definitely isn't that. I wasn't too hungry, so I kept it simple with chicken pasteles. Chef's kiss!!! I also had tostones on the side - delicious! I would absolutely suggest this place!

I waited an hour to get in. Please practice patience and you'll be rewarded with an amazing meal at an incredible value. I would eat here again and again.

I stopped here after a walking tour of Old San Juan based on a recommendation from our tour guide. We were a party of four and waited outside for about 30 minutes, which was frustrating--especially since it appeared the delay was due to inattentive staff rather than crowd volume. I observed multiple tables waiting over 15 minutes just to pay while the waiter focused on other tasks. There's no seating outside so you're just standing on a corner the whole time. Once we were finally seated, everyone placed their orders (two steaks, one chicken, and one fish). I ordered the garlic chicken. The food didn't take long to come out--at least not for everyone else. My chicken dinner arrived about 30 minutes after the rest of the table had already been served. It seemed my order was completely forgotten, as the waiter eventually returned and asked me to repeat it. Another person in our party ordered fried chicken, which was undercooked and had to be sent back. She also ordered a side of vegetables, which arrived roughly 15 minutes after her main course. The rice was just okay--not very flavorful--but it added a bit more taste when paired with the chicken. The salad was extremely basic: shredded lettuce, a tomato, and vinaigrette, and I received very little dressing. I wanted to ask for more, but the waiter didn't return until it was time to pay. Overall, my food was acceptable, but the service and long waits were disappointing. I left feeling underwhelmed, especially if this is considered the pinnacle of Puerto Rican food.

Really cute and popular local spot near my Airbnb. It's in a great corner location and clearly loved by locals--my Uber driver even gave it a shoutout. I arrived in San Juan at an odd time and was starving, so we stopped in for a late lunch. Since I was trying to save room for dinner, I kept it light and ordered the grilled chicken with salad and veggies (you can choose grilled or fried). My friend went with the shrimp, served with rice and veggies. We both kept it simple, so nothing too crazy to rave about this time. That said, I'd definitely come back to give this place a proper try next time I'm in town!

This place is a gem. We had dinner here out of our 7-day stay in old SJU. Food is delicious and the portion is just right. Not too small and not too big. As visitors, you don't want to carry left overs around. I had pernil and arroz con gandulez and it was so homey. The place is very humble almost a cafeteria style. Service can be better, we were waiting outside for 10 mins not knowing what's happening. Yes, there was a sign saying that we had to wait to be seated. Drinks were good. Waiters are friendly. This will be my to go for PR staple food for dinner or lunch when I visit again.

There was absolutely nothing good about the mix. The alcapurrias has no meat whatsoever, the chicharrónes were not crispy and the cheese was just awful. El Conflicto was perfect, all the flavor of a pina colada but without the heaviness of syrups & sugar. The Pollo Borracho was super flavorful & filling, chicken cooked to perfection falling off the bone. My fiancé had the Carne Frita, it was super tender & a well balanced dish. Service was friendly & attentive. My only complaint- we were so full we couldn't even look at the dessert menu! Guess we will just have to go back.

It's located close to the cruise port area, making it an effortless stop if you're exploring Old San Juan. The vibe is straightforward and comfortable--think casual, sit-down seafood spot where you can relax, grab a drink, and not overthink the menu. It's not flashy or upscale, but that's part of the appeal. Just friendly service, cold drinks, and solid food. Service * Very friendly and welcoming * Easy walk-in experience * Relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere Food & Drinks * Standard beers and cocktails--perfect for a mid-day refresher * Seafood Fried Platter - especially the fried cod; crispy, flavorful, and well-executed * Tacos (Fried Shrimp & Fried Cod) - the standout; fresh, generous portions with crunchy slaw and spot-on sauce The tacos were the surprise hit--bright, crispy, and packed with flavor. Exactly what you want from a Puerto Rican seafood lunch. Verdict Cayo Caribe is a dependable, casual seafood stop near the port. Nothing overly complicated--just good service, fresh seafood, and a relaxed setting. A great lunch choice if you're in the area and craving fried seafood and tacos. Solid four stars.

Once we made it inside they had a long menu of different items. Was able to order and the food took some time to come out but with how busy it was I knew it would be a while. The food came out and it was fresh also hot just missing some hot sauce. The place is noisy with voices carrying which is normal. A recommended place to visit when in Old San Juan.

They don't take reservations but we were gonna go early anyway. We decided that we'd get there at 5:30 PM and allow up to 30 minutes wait time. My friends got there a bit before 5:30 and were seated before I arrived. I got there a bit after 5:30 and there was a line of people trying to put their names down as I was walking in. They had already ordered drinks and an appetizer. We ordered another app and put in our entree orders. The bacalaitos took about 30 minutes to arrive. They were delicious. Not too salty which was great. The entrees took over 30 more minutes to come. I ordered the paella and it was delicious. My friend thought her mofongo was just ok. I tried a bite and it was kinda bland. The kids thought their entrees were ok. I thought they didn't make the right choices. Service was OK. Server wasn't really present as the majority of our time there was waiting vs eating. That was true for most patrons. Most people seated at tables were waiting instead of eating. Not sure if there was an issue that night. Either way, I'd say that it's still a good spot. You just can't come hangry or in a hurry.
